View Full Version : Terra (225x110)
Flash1 Nov 14, 2005, 04:35 AM Hello all,
In the course of design, you look for what works and what doesn't.
Thanks to tbear for showing me some new maps.
This new project based on those maps will be 225 x 110. roughly the same plots as my 180 x 130.
An interesting thing is that europe will only end up a little bigger than the one by Rob Skoya. My map will be plotted accurately wiith lots of oceans plots
Sorry the picture I was to show was 3 kb too large. :crazyeye:
***Addendum (Appendix A)
Do to changes in my comp and Hark's patch, map size in now going to be 200 x 95. I'll post some preview map picks below.
userqwerty Nov 14, 2005, 06:40 AM there are probably only 10 computers in the entire world that can run this
Lord_Iggy Nov 14, 2005, 12:17 PM Good thing I own deep blue :p
Greek Plunder Nov 14, 2005, 12:56 PM Good thing I own deep blue :p
I actually named my computer Deep Blue when I installed my operating system... So, I own Deep Blue.:D
ShroudedMist Nov 14, 2005, 02:04 PM Yeah honestly a map that size is unplayable presently. I had grandiose ideas of doing colossal maps like that till I realized noone would even be able to play them. On top of that with an 18 civ limit, a map that size would be so large as to make interaction between civs way too uncommon.
edit: It would kind of be nice if people didn't actually create threads until they had a map ready for download. Call it personal preference but if everyone does this then the forum will be clogged so fast.
Fenryial Nov 14, 2005, 02:38 PM So were is this map??
I get crashes on games with more than 25000 plots. Thats when loading. Making is ok, just takes forever and a day. Thats I guess about 200x120 maps
Junuxx Nov 14, 2005, 03:53 PM So were is this map??

Now that's interesting. 25000 is the absolute exact limit for you? Does a 159*157 map (24963 plots) work for you?
And is this just for Fenryial or for everyone? I'm really interested :) :mischief:
Flash1 Nov 14, 2005, 09:12 PM here is the base map small. i like the exact detail i can get with it.
Flash1 Nov 14, 2005, 09:17 PM I might be able to squeeze the atlantic a little to save space. I'm not sure how much i can squeeze the eastern edge of of the map.
you can't please everybody.
Sirian Nov 14, 2005, 09:22 PM If it's all right with you, could I get you to describe your map as an Earth map instead of a Terra map?
The Terra map script produces random terrain and land forms that approximate roughly to those of planet Earth, in size and location, but otherwise vary significantly from one map to the next.
Earth maps are great, but calling them "Terra" is only going to confuse people.
What do you think? Thanks. :)
- Sirian
Flash1 Nov 15, 2005, 01:45 AM No, problem.
Flash1 Nov 16, 2005, 10:45 AM Okay, I figure I can cut the width of the pacific ocean in half. therefore making the map 200 x 110. I'm looking into cutting the north polar region so that the map will now be 200 x 100.
Will this be better?
DesertWolf Nov 16, 2005, 11:15 AM i personally like it the bigger the better
but thinking of the current slowdowns i think i could live with this reduction to 200x100
nevertheless, i'm looking forward for your map :)
Flash1 Nov 16, 2005, 01:18 PM well, I've been playing with paint shop most of this afternoon. While I'd of prefered something like 256 x 128, this projrct is going to be 200 x 110.
mayonaise Nov 18, 2005, 10:03 PM I for one think I have a computer up to the challenge and im looking forward to it. I get really frustrated by having to truncate so many civs to 1 or 2 cities, yet want all my civs included. I like to have my cake and eat it too :)
Flash1 Nov 19, 2005, 07:42 AM Mayoaise,
I have be talking with a friend and we are talking about the lack of space in europe. I was lucky once to build 5 cities as Rome once on the modified Europe/earth map. I'm still contemplating the 256 x 128 map.
I would love feedback on this map. hopefully the patch will be out soon.
hybrid5 Nov 24, 2005, 02:18 PM is the map ready yet .
been watching this thread ..
just wondering .
great idea .. i love big maps ..
and with my pc . no problems with the huge maps either .. no slowdowns
so i have been wating for these larger maps to come out .
THanks
Flash1 Nov 24, 2005, 09:07 PM Hybrid,
Well, I hit a snag. My computer was having graphic problems in the editor with Aeric67's 180 x 87 map. My computer plays the map okay, but it doesn't like me doing too much looking around in the editor. So for now, I'm looking to see if this new patch and video driver update helps. I'm crossing my fingures and begging my wife for a new graphics card. I only have a 64mb Geforce 3 card.
I am working out an outline of a 180 x 90 map. Let's hope the game doesn't crash.
hybrid5 Nov 24, 2005, 09:39 PM no worries .. can't wait till it gets done ..thanks for the reply ..
keep bugging her .. get her some flowers .. maybe that will swing her to get you the video card ... :)
DesertWolf Nov 25, 2005, 01:47 AM i currently play also on aeric67's map, but i have to say, i must skip your map as it is really slow in mid game (i rose too big too soon it seems)
but i will try a bigger map if i buy new RAM (only have 512mb)
Tommy1234567890 Nov 26, 2005, 10:21 AM where is the download??
yugi666 Nov 26, 2005, 10:27 AM Where can i download tehe terra 225 X 110 map???
Flash1 Nov 26, 2005, 11:06 AM Guys, I'm working on it. I hit a problem with CTD in the editor. I think I can play it just fine.
Flash1 Nov 26, 2005, 02:01 PM Okay, I need some serious help.
Here are my comp stats:
AMD XP 3000+
768 MB DDR SDRAM
NVidia GeForce 3 Ti 200 (64MB)
The editor keeps crashing on Aeric67's map. It doesn't matter what graphics level I chose. But It always crashes after looking at about half the map.
Any Ideas as to what will fix this the most?
going to max RAM of 1GB or a 256 MB video card?
Flash1 Nov 26, 2005, 02:11 PM or will a 128 MB video card work?
panza105 Nov 27, 2005, 04:04 AM or will a 128 MB video card work?
What apears to work for me on Aeric67's map,
AMD 64 3200+
GFource 5700 128 Ram
1 Gig 400 DDR Ram Mainboard.PC 3200 I think
Hope this helps
BTW I'm running it on both XP Pro 32 Bit and XP Pro 64 Bit.
Flash1 Nov 27, 2005, 09:26 AM I guess the real question is, What happens when you are playing and can see or have conquered most the whole map?
I can play on the map. But I haven't gotten too far out of Europe. On the other hand, if I enter the Editor I look around much past the half way pint of the map. clearly I need more test data.
Thanks.

Flash, go download the latest patch(Start Civ4 go to Advanced and Get Updates). It will help very very much in relations to what your describing above. It's not your PC its the game. I have a much beefier system and I had the same kind of issues. After the patch it fixed it. ;)
Keep up the good work
TBear2520
Flash1 Nov 27, 2005, 01:39 PM Thanks TBear, but it didn't help.
tbear2520 Nov 27, 2005, 04:25 PM Have you tried clearing your Civ4 cache?
Delete the folder called cache located at
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\
I hear that holding shift while loading Civ4 does it as well. But I would manually delete the folder. ;)
Tbear2520
Flash1 Nov 27, 2005, 11:16 PM Well I do know that Terra size worlds are no problem. So, I'm going to try a 150x75.
Flash1 Nov 29, 2005, 12:11 PM I have another question. How memory is lost due to the editor?
Could I be able to play a game normally that was say 180 x 90, but have trouble using the editor?
Flash1 Nov 29, 2005, 11:25 PM Well The new project is 160 x 72.
I have North America and Central America plotted but not detailed.
There is a lot of old terrain that was cleared, but it acts like sea coast (light blue in mapview). Does anyone know how to change that back to regular ocean?
Junuxx Nov 29, 2005, 11:32 PM Well, ocean and coast are completely different terrain types. Doesn't it work?
I'll go and check it out.
As for the previous question: Yes, I can definitely confirm that some big maps load to play but crash when you open them in the editor.
Flash1 Nov 30, 2005, 06:20 AM Junuxx,
Basically, after clearing the map to all ocean, there is a shadow of the old terrain that remains.
Junuxx Nov 30, 2005, 07:02 AM Oh that. That should dissappear when you save the map and then reload it. It's been confirmed, I think by Sirian, that this is only a display issue, and that the actual map file is correct.
Flash1 Nov 30, 2005, 09:29 AM Junuxx,
Actually, I figured that, but when I opened the map in the Mapviewer, the shadowed area became light blue like the coastal blue of the viewer.
Flash1 Dec 01, 2005, 05:47 PM TBear,
I can't find a cashe folder. What is it called?
Flash1 Dec 05, 2005, 01:46 AM Good news.
My 160 x 72 project is going well.
I have the northern Hemisphere done from N. America to India.
No crashes so far.
Junuxx Dec 05, 2005, 03:32 AM Hey Flash.
Good to hear you're progressing well.
Hold shifting during Civ's startup to clear the program's cache.
Flash1 Dec 05, 2005, 12:26 PM Here is the first preview, of the Northern Hemisphere.
tbear2520 Dec 05, 2005, 12:32 PM Flash, the terrain at least from a distance seams rugged. IE, the canada\america border. This appears to show tundra and grass land. Is this layout just a stepping stone in the completion of the process? Like a layout of the land vs. actual terrain layout? I just wouldn't like to see such blobb of terrain. The playing wouldn't be as fun.
Flash1 Dec 05, 2005, 12:48 PM It is just an outline. After I get the Southern Hemisphere squared away then I can do some straightening up of the terrain.
tbear2520 Dec 05, 2005, 05:53 PM Sounds good Flash. I look forward to the asian pacific islands portion. I've always felt this area could be improved and be more strategic. ;)
Flash1 Dec 11, 2005, 12:49 AM I really hate to do this. But two changes has happened.
First, Hark's patch has made my comp better.
Second, My parents should be getting me a 256 MB GeForce 6200 card for Christmas.
What this means is that I can make a really awesome 200 x 95 map. I found my old map originals for the map I was making for civ 3. I think you all will really appreciate it.
I hope to have it mostly done next weekend.
P.S.
I want to give a huge thanks to Hark for his patch. It meant I could finally play with Aeric's map in the editor, so now I'm adventurous.
Flash1 Dec 11, 2005, 12:54 AM Now that I think about it could someone in Admin. please rename this tread to:
"Flash's Earth Map 200 x 95"
Thank You, I would really appreciate it.
Flash1 Dec 11, 2005, 01:03 AM Here are the map pics that will be the basis of the new map.
Flash1 Dec 18, 2005, 10:01 PM Here it is: My first Preview of my 200 x 100 map.
Any questions or comments?
Junuxx Dec 19, 2005, 05:58 AM Good, very detailed!
The lesser Antilles look a bit weird though. There is a land bridge from Venezuela to Haiti, while you can't sail from Bógota to Paramaribo without going all the way around Haiti.
I think islands are the biggest issue.. I miss Crete, Ireland and Britain don't seem to be in the correct proportions, maybe Hawaii and Sri Lanka could be just a little bigger.
But I admire your work, keep going! :goodjob:
Flash1 Dec 19, 2005, 09:17 AM Junuxx,
I'm doing as close to a map copy that I can by hand. that means some islands are so close that they get ansorbed into one landmass or into the nearest larger landmass. This map is as close to the original atlas as I can make it except for a few cases.
Also, I think europe will have desent room to make a few cities each.
After I get the base done, anyone can help fix it.
Thanks Junuxx.
P.s. England has some Islands attached.
Karam Dec 19, 2005, 01:21 PM I've been watching this thread since the first day it was created, have you any idea when it might be ready? any estimations?
PS: I do not mean to hurry you up;)
Flash1 Dec 19, 2005, 02:21 PM Well, the whole base should be done tonight. I'm finally on Christmas break. So I have to have it complete fairly quickly.
I do think it looks really realistic.
Anyone want to help "color" in terrain?
Another question. I have marked on my source maps various landmark mountain peaks. How do I use these in the editor?
Gnostic78 Dec 19, 2005, 02:23 PM Nice preview, Flash. :)
I was working on a 215 by 105 world map, which would have been similar to yours, I suppose. Turned out we were in a race, I guess? :mischief:
Well, your map looks awesome, and I can't wait to stop working on mine and start playing on yours! :D Congratulations, and keep up the great effort!
Junuxx Dec 19, 2005, 05:35 PM Junuxx,

Of course, I understand that any rendition of a world map in 225x110 tiles has such issues. I don't mind that Scotland absorbed the Hebrides and that Corsica and Vancouver Island are parts of the mainland. The problem is passability for ships. It worries me that ships cannot pass the street of Malakka(between West-Malaysia and Sumatra). Neither can they sail around or between the Caribbean islands, they have to go around all of them.
I hope you know that in Civ 4, ships can't enter a tile diagonally if the other diagonal is a landbridge, unlike in Civ3.
L = land, W = water
WL
LW
Ships cannot go from the first W to the other.
In case you knew, don't take the 'basic' explanation as an offense, didn't know how to make it any clearer ;)
Junuxx Dec 19, 2005, 05:36 PM whoops, double post! :o
Flash1 Dec 19, 2005, 05:59 PM Junuxx,
Can't ships pass Diagonally between two water tiles? I knew they changed that in civ 3 so you couldn't. I didn't realize they couldn't in civ 4. I will have to rethink island placement after I'm done.
Flash1 Dec 19, 2005, 06:00 PM Gnostic,
Thanks for the comments. If Civ 4 didn't have such memory problems I would have gone with a 256 x 128 map.
Junuxx Dec 19, 2005, 07:33 PM Junuxx,
Can't ships pass Diagonally between two water tiles?
Yeah, that was what I was trying to say :crazyeye:
By the way, do you know the land ratio of your map? About 40%?
Flash1 Dec 19, 2005, 08:09 PM Junuxx,
According to mapview, I'm currently at 29.5% landmass.
Gnostic78 Dec 19, 2005, 08:32 PM Having used WB for a while, and having discarded a few maps, I can honestly say that sacrificing accuracy in terms of islands is probably never a bad idea.
My maps had larger islands.... Cuba, Hispaniola, Hawaii, Madagascar..... but the Antilles, Leewards, etc, I larger forsook or consolidated (I was going to have like two or three tiles for the entire Antilles, for example)
I think having more mainland room is vastly more important than island hopping. France deserves more than one city in France, you know? But that's just me ;)
Flash1 Dec 19, 2005, 09:04 PM Gnostic,
I'm not sure how effecient civs will be in placing cities but I do think my europe is bigger than the other maps. But I'll find out during testing I suppose. And You're right. Land mass is more important than islands.
Gnostic78 Dec 19, 2005, 11:58 PM Cool, I think your Europe, based on the screenshots, will be fine. The AI will always be the AI, so I wouldn't sweat them.
I just got the hang of Rhye's BMP/WBS converter, and my world map project took a major leap forward. However, when I recently loaded the map to edit with WB, I got a memory allocation error. I'm thinking I broke the bank when it comes to RAM.... :( Therefore, I'm done.
Soo... it's all you, man. :)
Junuxx Dec 20, 2005, 02:48 AM Gnostic, I'm currently trying to improve my estimates on memory usage based on world sizes. So could you tell me your map's dimension and land ratio too, please ? ;)
Flash1 Dec 20, 2005, 09:50 AM Gnostic,
I'm doing all my work by hand. I'm using the grid overlay in paintshop over my map and then copy it by hand onto graph paper. I can then make any adjustments as necessary. Then I've been using mapview to plot out my map.
The process takes longer but I think I get a better quality product.
Oh, Of course this project couldn't of gotten started without Junuxx.
Gnostic78 Dec 20, 2005, 11:04 AM Flash, I was doing the same thing. :) Pencil and graph paper, followed by a 24-bit BMP map via Paint, and using this BMP with Rhye's converter to produce a workable WBS. I then used WB to fine-tune coastlines, add specific terrains, startinglocs, resources, etc. Rhye's 18 civ world map was my favorite world map so far, I just wanted something bigger :D
Junuxx, your Atlas program is awesome. :goodjob: My map dimensions were 225 by 115.... land mass ratio.... err... not quite sure... like I said, my last project went straight from Paint to Civ4's WB. I can check it out... where would I find such info? Would a guess suffice?
It's odd, because I was able this big map without issue a couple of times, and then, I get hit with a memory allocation error. I'll work on that.... I have a hard time giving up, even though Flash's map looks better. :) I'll finish mine to prove.. something... oh, yeah, that I hate giving up! :D
Gnostic78 Dec 20, 2005, 11:07 AM Junuxx, could it be possible to make Atlas less random? Maybe like being able to purposely edit a generated map using the utility itself?
Perhaps I'm lazy, but man, that would make mapmaking a LOT easier.
Flash1 Dec 20, 2005, 12:11 PM Finally,
Here is the full base map in preview.
Junuxx Dec 20, 2005, 12:53 PM Even though I think this base map is a real beauty(!!), I feel I have to stress that the land surface of Ireland (32477 square miles) is more than fives times that of Hawaii (6423 sq. miles), yet both get 4 squares. Poor Irish ;) Please add the 3 sea squares directly west of current Ireland to it. I'm sure that will make them feel better ;)
Flash1 Dec 20, 2005, 01:08 PM Junuxx,
I understand. Hawaii is about 7 islands connected. But I'll try to make Ireland a little bigger for you.
I'm glad someone thinks the map is beautiful. I have a lot more work to do. Keep up with the comments.
Flash1 Dec 20, 2005, 09:07 PM All,
I'm ready to place starting locations. For those civs with multi-leaders, any suggestions on who to choose?
Gnostic78 Dec 21, 2005, 01:56 AM Pick Washington for the Americans, no doubt. There's my two cents. Where's my change?
Junuxx Dec 21, 2005, 03:36 AM Junuxx, could it be possible to make Atlas less random? Maybe like being able to purposely edit a generated map using the utility itself?
Perhaps I'm lazy, but man, that would make mapmaking a LOT easier.
For editing maps I'd like to suggest MapView. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=141622)
I'm not planning to include standard editing functions, sorry.
I was thinking, however, about selecting and regenerating rectangular parts of the map. That way you can place the continents more like you want.:)
Gnostic78 Dec 21, 2005, 10:46 AM Junuxx, that would work nicely. :)
Karam Dec 21, 2005, 03:05 PM I'm getting really excited for this map, I hope you'll be releasing it soon!;)
Karam Dec 23, 2005, 03:07 PM Um, any new info or something?
Genghis_Kai Dec 23, 2005, 08:12 PM Finally,
Here is the full base map in preview.
Hi, this is a really good looking map.
But can you add in Lake Balkhash, Lake Baykal and Apal Sea (inland lakes in Asia)? They are very important landmarks in asia.
And some African lakes too.
Good work!
Flash1 Dec 23, 2005, 11:34 PM Karam,
Good news and bad news. Good News, I now have some help. Bad news is I took my family to my parents for the weekend to celebtate Christmas. Be back to work on the map on Monday.
As for the map, I tweaked the brightness level of the source map in paint shop. It helped tremendously with visualizing terrain. There are a lot of rivers on the map, which is great. And Alot of mountains. If I have one problem it is differentiating between hills and mountains. I am looking for a good natural resource map for placement of resources.
I'm going to need to test the map size after Christmas. I'm still hopeful for that Geforce FX 6200 card this weekend.
Genghis Kai,
I'm not familiar with the terrain you are inquiring about, but if it is on my source maps, then I can say more than likely. If not, I can probably find a place for them on the map.
This map will get done. I really want to use it too. If when it gets done and I can play a whole game on it without many problems, I will try to make this map even bigger.
Flash1 Dec 25, 2005, 02:07 AM I happy to say, I did get that video card I really wanted for Christmas. I just hope with it and the new patch that the map is playable.
Flash1 Dec 26, 2005, 01:42 AM Update.
Earlier I installed the new graphics card and new nvidia drivers.
I just finished loading the raw map into the world builder. And I had complete success. I could look at any place on the map without a problem. So there is still hope for playability. It loaded for me in about 35 seconds.
Tyranausaurus Dec 28, 2005, 06:51 AM Gr8 Idea! I'll be using this map to make a Modern World Scenario when I get to finish my 'World Flags Project', thats if you don't mind ofcourse!:D
Eh, the world looks much better in terms of size and accuracy:) , Finally some places like Japan, Arabia and Spain will get some decent place to expand -peacefully-! Keep Going!
chewbs Dec 28, 2005, 04:06 PM WOW.. This map looks great.:goodjob: I have been waiting for a world map this huge. I have 2 gigs of ram so far and I am getting 2 more soon. If you can build one bigger... awesome!!!
Nice detail!!
Keep up the good work!!
p.s. and thanx for making this for us..
Flash1 Dec 29, 2005, 12:11 AM Genghis_Kai
I looked over the source map. I have a huge amount of rivers and a number of unmarked lakes. But this is a partial list of items I have on the source maps:
AFRICA: Lake Chad, Lake Nyasa, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria. Landmark Mountains: Mt. Kilimanjaro.
ASIA: Aral Sea, Lake Baikal, Lake Balkhass and Special landmark mountains: K2 and Mt Everest.
I hope this helps.
Tyranausaurus,
Thank you for your kind words. I never felt a civ earth map was "big" enough. After all we are not building cities per se but metropolitan areas. I'm glad you will have a use for it.
Chewbs,
Thank you for looking forward to it. If this map is a success and my machine will play it, then I will work on an even bigger map if there is a demand for it.
C-Kompii Dec 29, 2005, 06:49 AM Even though I think this base map is a real beauty(!!), I feel I have to stress that the land surface of Ireland (32477 square miles) is more than fives times that of Hawaii (6423 sq. miles), yet both get 4 squares. Poor Irish ;) Please add the 3 sea squares directly west of current Ireland to it. I'm sure that will make them feel better ;)
Great map looking map so far, keep up the good work. Just a few suggestions. Taiwan is actually more than twice the size of Haiwaii at 13,823 sq. miles but only has 2 tiles on the map compared to 4 for Haiwaii. Although I don't mind Haiwaii being bigger than it is realistically due to its strategical & geographical importance.
I think islands from Japan, Taiwan and even the Korea peninsula could be made slightly larger also for a more realistic game play, since they are the developed countries in Asia (other than Singapore) thus a few extra tiles of land and/or placement of resources later could help develop stronger cities in the area.
-G'day-
Flash1 Dec 29, 2005, 11:58 AM C-Kompii,
Although I'm looking to make the map as accurate as possible there are certain sacrifices that come into play. The most accurate part of the map is the continents. The Islands will almost always be off. As a map gets bigger obviously the map becomes more "accurate".
My source maps are a mercator projection that come from an atlas that I scanned. Unfortunately these are the same problems I had with my Maximum-sized civ3 map. There will always be a conflict with "realism", map projection, playability and compromise.
The only thing I can say at this point is wait until it is done and it can be tweaked later. The squares are what they are. If I stayed to exact scale I would loose most of the pacific. Unfortunately, Taiwan is one island and Hawaii is seven.
I know it stinks, but until Firaxis can free more memory I'm not sure I'll be able to do a bigger map. This one will just have to be tested a lot first to see if it crashes late game. It is after all 200 x 100.
Thanks for the comments. All I ask is patients.
Tyranausaurus Dec 31, 2005, 03:50 PM Flash, your map will be fine, I would look forward to bigger maps however! Just focus on this map for now, I would be more than willing to happily help you with placing native barbarian groups, resources and other materials. If you want some help you can just PM me:) . It would be nice if you would give us a rough release date -that's if possible-. Keep working on your cartography job!:D
Tyranausaurus Jan 03, 2006, 05:13 PM This is just a blank post of mine, sorry, just to keep the thread in bold. I'm fearing this gr8 thread would be lost under the pile of older ones. Hey Flash any news or something? I would really love to see your map -even if you release the raw version of it-!:)
hybrid5 Jan 03, 2006, 07:50 PM damm i have bee away for a while . still looking good .. lots of progress since i have been gone ..
nice map . .. can;t wait to play on it ..
Thanks
Flash1 Jan 03, 2006, 08:15 PM Update,
Almost done with North America. I did some minor terrain tweaking. There are a LOT of rivers. I'll post a pic soon.
Sorry guys I thought I would be farther along but I can't shake this cold. Been runnig a constant fever.
Tyranausaurus,
Thanks for the kind words.
Hybrid5,
I think you will like the new pics I'll post soon.
Flash1 Jan 04, 2006, 01:39 AM I need to know some information about what civ leaders to choose:
American: Roosevelt or Washington;
Chinese: Mao Zedong or Qin She Huang;
English: Elizabeth or Victoria;
French: Louis XIV or Napoleon;
German: Bismarck or Frederick;
Indian: Asoka or Gandhi;
Mongolian: Genghis Khan or Kublai Khan;
Russian: Catherine or Peter.
And why?
Gnostic78 Jan 04, 2006, 11:29 AM Hey Flash,
First off, I am really eager to play this map! :D It looks fabulous!
Secondly, civ leaders can easily be changed within the WBS via XML. So, if a person downloads your map, but would rather have one leader over another, he or she can simply change that on their own.
My only suggestion is to make sure Catherine is included, since her attributes are great, and having a wider selection of powerful women represented is always good, ahem, at least in my humble opinion. ;) But perhaps I'm a bit biased.....
Hope that helps, and good luck with the project! :)
Flash1 Jan 05, 2006, 09:23 AM This is the first Preview of North America.
I still need to add the desert areas. And deside how I want the mountains tp run. In the meantime hills are standing in. And the foests need to be tweaked.
Flash1 Jan 05, 2006, 10:11 AM Junuxx,
In another thread, I think it was you that listed a few codes. One of the codes was a random resource generator and I can't remember the other one.
Can you please list them here and how to use them?
Tyranausaurus Jan 05, 2006, 01:03 PM Looking nice Flash, however you should give Nova Scotia of Canada some more significancy, as I think that we should be able to have a decent Halifax.
Could you post a Screenshot of Asia minor and Arabia -would be nice- I know it is still raw but I would like to see how many squares there are:).
GR8! Keep Going:goodjob:
Flash1 Jan 05, 2006, 03:59 PM Tyranausaurus,
I understand, I'm not happy with Nova Scotia either. I'll change it. I'll post the Middle East Screen shot tonight for you.
Flash1 Jan 05, 2006, 05:26 PM T-Rex
This is your Pre-view.
Tyranausaurus Jan 05, 2006, 05:47 PM Nice, :), you might wanna re-consider the placement of the rivers;). -I'm putting too much stress on you, I know:lol: -. I just want your map to be of optimum quality!:goodjob:
Flash1 Jan 05, 2006, 06:10 PM T-Rex,
I just follow my source maps and the grid on top, from there I can only do the best I can.... or I can let you finish the map.:D
chewbs Jan 05, 2006, 07:08 PM WOW... the map looks awesome... I am like a kid waiting for christmas day...
keep up the great work...
Tyranausaurus Jan 06, 2006, 03:58 PM T-Rex,
I can only do the best I can.... or I can let you finish the map.:D
Would take the honor of helping! If you could PM me your current stage of the map I can Improve the areas I know. :). Please if you would I will be gracious:mischief: :D.
Flash1 Jan 06, 2006, 06:33 PM T-Rex,
Okay. I really need a developer's forum space.
Let me plot the rivers and lakes. Lord Parkin (aka Emperor) is going to help too. So, I'll let him concentrate on Asia and the South Pacific since he is from New Zealand.
What part of the world do you want?
Tyranausaurus Jan 06, 2006, 07:40 PM What part of the world do you want?
:D ;) Thanks for giving it a thought!, I would like to take care of Canada and the Near East. I really do have plans to alter these regions massively. -Will be waiting desperately 4 the file;)-
Flash1 Jan 06, 2006, 08:41 PM Okay,
It looks like I'm probably going to resurrect my old TWC forums.... TWC stands for The World Creators. I'll count you on the team.
I'm considering making a mod specially for the map after it is done if you are game.
Tyranausaurus Jan 07, 2006, 07:49 AM  So where can I get the map? Thanks!
Flash1 Jan 07, 2006, 09:30 AM T-Rex,
As I said, Let me get the rivers placed and get the forum space up. Thjat will let downloads and allow better communications between team members. Be patient please. :)
Tyranausaurus Jan 07, 2006, 09:39 AM T-Rex,

-Will sure be!;)
Gnostic78 Jan 07, 2006, 09:52 AM Flash, do you still need volunteers? I can bring my map as a resume ;)
On second thought.... I'd rather rely on wit and charm.
Flash1 Jan 07, 2006, 10:19 AM Gnostic78,
The more the merrier. I wasn't really planning on volunteers in the beginning, but a lot of people are interested in the map and I really want to start playing on it. So, I just need to get organized.
So, What I'm wanting to do is place the rivers and starting locations. Then I'll put the map and source maps in the developer's private section of the new forum. Then we can all go nuts.
The next level is to create an epic mod to go with it. There is a tech tree I want "steal" to use with it.
So, I need a few days to get everything organized.
So, whoever wants to help, leave your name here or send me a PM.
Flash1 Jan 07, 2006, 11:17 PM Hello all,
My old CDG developer's forum is being reborn.
The forum is here:
http://www.evo-games.net/Home/viewforum.php?f=230
I will still interact here and post updates. If anyone wants to help with the map/ scenario project can let me know.
Tyranausaurus Jan 09, 2006, 09:34 AM Whatsup with the server Flash? says forum you have selected doesnt exist! I'm at school now, will see more when I come back
Flash1 Jan 09, 2006, 12:38 PM T-Rex
Luc and Emperor are having problems. It looks like they may have to set up a special ftp.
new link above.
Flash1 Jan 09, 2006, 04:12 PM T-Rex, Gnostic, Chewbs,
Forums partially fixed.
Tyranausaurus Jan 09, 2006, 05:04 PM I see no file:confused:? Are the .wbs to follow the source ones?
PS: I can use some other resources like encarta.
Flash1 Jan 09, 2006, 06:34 PM Yeah, the winRAR didn't list the right filename and I was too frustrated to change it.
pokeravi Jan 11, 2006, 02:30 PM I was just wondering if this map is going to be way bigger than the standard in-game map. Thanks.
Tyranausaurus Jan 11, 2006, 03:01 PM It'll be bigger, and hopefully more interesting to play the fact that it gives civilizations more place to build cities and expand to their historical areas without being overcrowded. The map is still to be finished and me and a few members of a private forum will be adding the final touches to it
Flash1 Jan 12, 2006, 01:43 AM Pokeravi,
Well, the map project is going to be 200 x 100 where a huge map is 128 x 80.
The map will feature landmark mountain peaks, a lot of rivers and lakes. And as Taranausaurus has said, it has a lot more room. One thing to keep in mind is that the map is going for accuracy and quality and we are pushing computer resources. While I do envision a bigger map, it will have to wait.
After the map is completed, my team and I is going to work out an epic scenario for use with the map.
HourlyDaily Jan 13, 2006, 06:18 AM Thankyou for putting this together. I've always been in the camp that prefers a larger map over short waiting times.
Good luck all.
Flash1 Jan 13, 2006, 09:20 AM HourlyDaily,
For everyone on my team, you're welcome. Taranausausus has done a great job on Africa and the middle East. I hope to have more screen shots this weekend.
Tyranausaurus Jan 13, 2006, 09:25 AM I'll hopefully be able to post an 'ingame' screenshot today on both forums.

Sa~Craig Jan 16, 2006, 09:43 PM sweet i look forward to this. I'm also a large map fan because i always found it funny when i get to europe there is only 1 in france. and then they'd build another city somwhere between the black sea and the caspian
Cyril2006 Jan 31, 2006, 11:19 AM What happened with this project?
2Flash1: Are there any problems?
really whant to play this map...
Tyranausaurus Jan 31, 2006, 02:42 PM The map is still in-progress. We all want to play the map and move on to the mod stage, but it will take some time. Have you seen the screenshots I posted?
Armchair Shark Feb 01, 2006, 02:27 AM What kind of spec machine do you imagine we will need to run this map ? Currently I have a 2.9 GHz P4 with 128Mb card and 768 Mb RAM, will this be enough ?
UnCopain Feb 01, 2006, 03:24 AM I think 768MB RAM isn't enough ...
Armchair Shark Feb 01, 2006, 03:27 AM I don't suppose an upgrade to a Gb RAM would be enough either ?
UnCopain Feb 01, 2006, 03:43 AM I don't suppose an upgrade to a Gb RAM would be enough either ?
Don't know sorry but 768MB RAM isn't enough
I have 1MB RAM and that is just enough for run a "Huge" map ...
The size of this map ( 225*110 ) is three times larger than the "Huge" size; I let to you imagine the lag ( sorry for my english :D )
Tyranausaurus Feb 01, 2006, 04:43 AM Guys, lets face it. Civ4 needs AT LEAST 2GB RAM if you want to play maps this big. 'UnCopain', the map has been reduced to 225x100 for performance reasons. 768 MB RAM is enough for starting the game, but once you pass 200AD, your gig will kill you. Anyway, let's wait for the completed map and see.
Flash1 Feb 09, 2006, 10:42 AM Sorry Guys For not being around lately, personal issues.
Anyway, I've got 768 MB Ram. But I also received a new 256 MB video card for Christmas, which helped a lot. I really don't know at this point if the mem saver option will be much better. I also don't know if restarting the computer every so often will help or not. I have to wait until tax time for a mem upgrade or a new Comp.
Anyway, the map will look good. Their is a lot more room for expansion. I am hoping to get an atlas from home that has modern natural resources listed in it. I still need to tweak the USA a bit and finish Europe. Other than that we need to finish SE ASIA and the Pacific.
I am well pleased with all of the team members and their willingness to see this project finished.
tyball Feb 28, 2006, 08:45 AM How is the map proceeding? Nice screenshots btw!
pokeravi Mar 02, 2006, 02:41 PM I'm sorry but this is taking too long. That other guy who made an Earth map that was way larger than this didn't even take this long.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=159904
You could at least post some new screenshots or keep us updated, no offense.
Tyranausaurus Mar 02, 2006, 04:16 PM Guys, guys, guys... Our map is meant to be accurate. It is late because of some personal and/or technical problems. I do not have any screenshots at the moments to post, however all I can report is this:
The parts of the world assigned to me are all done. All I need now is to combine all the other parts of the world as soon as the other members finish them.
Stay tuned
Flash1 Mar 18, 2006, 06:53 PM T-Rex is right. There are a lot of things that have happened to the project. I think we all have lives outside of civ IV that simply have to take presidence. But also we want the map to be very accurate while stile giving room to manuever around on.
On another front, I just got a new comp. I bought a Gateway GT5028. It has a Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 3800+, 1 GB RAM, but it has a built in GeForce 6100 (128 mb shared memory). I need more RAM and hoping to get a video card very soon. So, I'm having certain issues with finishing and running the map.
But after things slow down here at Homework R US College, things should get back to work quickly.
Flash1 Mar 19, 2006, 09:15 PM Okay I'm hoping someone can help me with an upgrade issue for being able to use this map for its full potential and making an even bigger map later.
First I plan on buying about 2 GB RAM soon.
second the video card... GeForce 6800 PCIE w/256 MB or Radeon X1300 w/512 MB?
Flash1 Mar 22, 2006, 06:51 PM I have some bad news.
I have had a problem that I have been hoping would go away for 2 months now. I went to the doctor today and was diagnosed with a bad case of carpotunnel. I will be forced to wear a splint for at least a month and hope I wont have to have surgery on it. Until I see how difficult it will be to use the splint, my computer use is limited.
So, I'm happy to say T-Rex is going to finish the map.
Flash1 May 11, 2006, 08:06 PM Update:
I am near graduation and I am dealing with this bum hand as best as I can.
I will finish the 200 x 100 map as soon as I get the missing pieces.
In the meantime, I am working on a 250 x 125 map. Mainly, I'm curious to see how it will look.
seiya May 13, 2006, 11:50 AM I think south america looks too thin... should be a bit more fat... IMO.
Flash1 May 13, 2006, 02:02 PM What do you think of this preview of the 250 x 125?
Does adding trips S. America and Africa Help?
Flash1 May 14, 2006, 03:12 AM Update,
Had a problem using Mapview. I had to swich to KSwoll's editor and changed map size to 256 X 128. I'll post new pic tomorror.
Slavic Sioux Jun 11, 2006, 01:14 PM ignore this post it please
mikemike Jun 14, 2006, 07:15 PM there are probably only 10 computers in the entire world that can run this
"en arcae an ho Lego"... if he builds it this big, we will play and have fun.:)
