View Full Version : Religionfest
Tboy Nov 14, 2005, 12:52 PM Starting a SG for complete religous domination. (i.e. found or capture every holy city and spread our state religion).
Difficulty: Noble
World Type: Continents, medium water level.
World Size: Standard
Civ Number: Including us, 8.
Civ: Arabia, Saladin.
Speed: Normal.
Victory Conditions: All on.
10 turns per player. I'll wait for at least 2 more people before starting.
Player Roster:
Tboy
parachute4u
Panth
Thyrwyn
ucel Nov 14, 2005, 01:31 PM It can be funny to play two games with opposite goals :). So, check me in. What difficulty?
Tboy Nov 14, 2005, 01:51 PM Noble. Just added that in.
parachute4u Nov 14, 2005, 02:56 PM Count me in. Tried it already -- Failed...
Had bad starting position (all desert ) and was playing on prince though. AI outproduced and outexpanded me midgame, outresearched me lategame. But I learned a lesson: If you start in desert or ice, go to war. I'd like to try it again.
Tboy Nov 15, 2005, 10:03 AM Ok, we have the minimum players, but more would be better. I say we wait until Sunday for more players, then get this game started.
ucel Nov 15, 2005, 10:12 AM Do we plan to set fixed state religion? Or just wait and see which to take?
Tboy Nov 15, 2005, 11:54 AM Just wait and see what we get first. I'm betting on Hinduism.
Panth Nov 17, 2005, 10:01 AM Awww, why not . . .count me in :D
Tboy Nov 17, 2005, 10:49 AM Note: The player order will be the order that people signed up in. So I will go first, then ucel, and so on.
Panth Nov 17, 2005, 11:38 AM Ucel . . .Ucel . . .that name sounds familiar :D
Tboy Nov 17, 2005, 11:41 AM Actually, due to the upcoming patch, we should delay starting the game until it comes out. Everybody please download and install before we start.
Tboy Nov 21, 2005, 10:36 AM Everybody send me your e-mail addresses. We'll start after I have everyone's e-mail addresses and the patch comes out (hurry up firaxis!!!
EDIT: Sorry, forgot we don't need to use e-mails, stuck in PBEM thinking here.
ucel Nov 21, 2005, 11:05 AM What you need these mails for?
Tboy Nov 21, 2005, 01:11 PM Sorry, just remembered that we pass them on in post attachments, not e-mails. I was stupidly stuck in PBEM thinking. :wallbash:
BTW, does anyone know if the patch will come out soon?
ucel Nov 21, 2005, 01:17 PM Yes, it will come out soon :D.
Tboy Nov 21, 2005, 02:40 PM Good. We should wait for it before we start, mainly for gameplay changes (horses revealed by the wheel? What in the...).
Tboy Nov 24, 2005, 09:38 AM The patch is out! Could everybody please DL and install it, otherwise we may have problems if some people get the patch and others don't.
ucel Nov 24, 2005, 10:25 AM If you don't start the game in few hours you have to skip me for this turn. I'm out on Friday and back Sunday evening.
Panth Nov 25, 2005, 10:28 PM Patched up.
Checking in.
Ready to get religious.
Tboy Nov 27, 2005, 04:06 AM Good. Once ucel and parachute4u confirm they've installed the patch, we'll get this game on the road.
ucel Nov 27, 2005, 03:13 PM I'm patched and waiting.
Panth Nov 28, 2005, 12:03 AM For the record, I did manage to get all 7 religions in one of my games . . . in one city no less. I used Spain/archipelago. Built no workers or settlers and researched nothing but the religious techs in rapid succession. Mao got kinda antsy though and took me out with a quickness afterwards as I had no real infrastructure or military capability.
Tboy Nov 28, 2005, 11:23 AM The beginning state of the Arabian Empire:
http://img202.imageshack.us/my.php?image=religionfestscreenshot2jn.png
I suggest we settle in position and send the warrior west, unless anyone thinks otherwise.
ucel Nov 28, 2005, 12:04 PM I'd say agree, but can't see the picture :(
Panth Nov 28, 2005, 12:11 PM I get no pic either.
ucel Nov 28, 2005, 12:12 PM Hi Panth, how about Ucel1?
Tboy Nov 28, 2005, 12:34 PM Are you sure? I click the link and see the pic... odd.
I tried to upload it as a screenshot, but couldn't work out how. Any ideas how?
Panth Nov 28, 2005, 12:50 PM Weird . . . works now.
I don't know how imageshack works - photobucket provides the IMG tag you can cut/paste. Looks like [IMG=http.blahblahblah].
Settling in place looks good. I suggest working the money squares until first 3 religions come in bud/hin/jew - break for a worker and go from there.
ucel Nov 28, 2005, 12:59 PM In the terms of the game I would restart it. We have only 4 fields producing commerce, two from that on the see. That means, if we want to get Bud/Hin we have to work on the both 1F fields :(.
Tboy Nov 28, 2005, 01:19 PM Have played 10 turns.
Here's a screeny:
http://img423.imageshack.us/my.php?image=religionfestscreenshot25la.png
Sent warrior west, popped goody hut for 79 gold, then sent south and killed lion on defense, taking damage.
Built warrior in Mecca, fortified for city defense, started on another warrior for exploration.
Mecca working plains tile next to river (1 food, 1 hammer, 1 gold), polytheism will be resaerched in 1 turn.
No prompt saying Buddhism is founded yet... a good sign.
The save for ucel:
ucel Nov 28, 2005, 01:23 PM Have it, will play in hour or so. 10 or more?
ucel Nov 28, 2005, 01:50 PM Precheck: 3600 BC, set warrior to stay and heal. Oh no! we have only one commerce field :(. Must point to fishing ASAP
1) 3560
Picture says all. Researching Med now, due 9.

5 3400 Bad news :( Bud founded somewhere. Changed Meditation to Fishing

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/ucel/Civ/tboy_country.jpg
Fishing due 1, then we can use water commerce. After that we can start masonry->mono, but before going to masonry try to pop goodies.
You never become researched tech from the hut, so try mining for the turn or two.
Panth Nov 28, 2005, 04:48 PM Yeah, to get 'em all, you gotta go Buddhism first. And this was not the best location for an early religion-founding gambit. Tha's cool. We'll just have to track those cities down and take 'em.
Looks like we have a continent to ourselves maybe? Or at least the northern half of one?
Panth Nov 29, 2005, 07:14 PM Oh paaaarachute! You got it?
Tboy Nov 30, 2005, 09:47 AM If parachute4u doesn't reply by friday, we'll skip him for this go.
Thyrwyn Nov 30, 2005, 10:28 AM If you are looking for another player, I would be interested in joining.
ucel Nov 30, 2005, 11:07 AM Thyrwyn can replace me. Sorry, must reduce my SGs for now :(, and I chosen this one because its the nearest to the beginning, so he can feel like he played it from the start.
Panth Nov 30, 2005, 12:07 PM Sorry to see you drop ucel, but I get it.
See you in the other SG's :wavey:
Thyrwyn Dec 01, 2005, 10:30 AM Great - I see that I play after Panth.
Panth Dec 05, 2005, 08:48 AM Hey Tboy, are we still playing this? If so, got it.
Tboy Dec 05, 2005, 10:01 AM Yes, we are still playing. However, parachute4u doesn't seem to be playing the save. I will PM him, and if he still doesn't reply we'll skip staright to you, panth.
Thyrwyn Dec 06, 2005, 07:00 AM I can play tonight if no one else can.
Panth Dec 06, 2005, 08:30 AM Oh, I can play . . . just waiting to see what's up. Tboy siad he was gonna PM the 'chute. :undecide:
Amy chance we could institute a 24/48 hr. rule Tboy?
:coffee:
Tboy Dec 06, 2005, 09:45 AM I've just PM'd parachute. If he doesn't reply within 48 hours, we'll skip him. This applies to everyone.
Tboy Dec 10, 2005, 10:38 AM KK, panth, he's been gone too long. Your turn to play.
Panth Dec 10, 2005, 12:05 PM Alright, "got it." Will play today.
Panth Dec 10, 2005, 07:42 PM preturn 3200 BC
- Fishing & growth due in 1
- Yeah, it's like, 3200 bc so not much going on y'know?
T1 3160
+ Fishing -> masonry [8]
* Got $67 from southern hut
- Working coast & rice.
Note: This is a pathetic start for a religion gambit. We got no food or money tiles without a good deal of work. We're gonna have to beat on some people later. I will try to get us toward Judaism though. Then we need to focus on worker techs and start spreading out.
T2 3120
T3 3080
+ We have neighbors! I find both Germany & Rome to the south in the same move.
T4 3040
- Mecca warrior -> barracks
T5 3000
T6 2960
+ Got $44 from a northen hut
T7 2920
* One of our warriors (west) gets eaten by a bear.
T8 2880
T9 2840
+ Monotheism in 12
T10 2800
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0078.jpg
*** Well, not much going still. It's 2800, mono due in 11. We are growing extremely slowly, but if we want religions we should get Judasim now. I'd make a worker but we have nothing for them to do and can't break from mono yet.
Tboy Dec 11, 2005, 05:28 AM Thyrwyn, your turn.
Thyrwyn Dec 11, 2005, 12:48 PM got it - will post tonight or early tomorrow AM (east coast).
Thyrwyn Dec 12, 2005, 07:14 AM Hmmm. We need a worker - we need to improve our tiles in order to grow. Will wait til we hit size 3.
Turn 30 (2800 BC)
Turn 31 (2760 BC)
Turn 32 (2720 BC)
Mecca grows: 3
Turn 33 (2680 BC)
Mecca begins: Worker
Now that we are size 3 I switch to Worker.
Turn 36 (2560 BC)
Contact made: Malinese Empire
Turn 39 (2440 BC)
Warrior defeats (2.00/2): Barbarian Lion
Turn 40 (2400 BC)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/Rfest_Mecca_2400.JPG
Worker will finish in 8 turns. Monotheism will finish in 1. We should pursue some growth techs next. We need some jobs for our worker - I would probably pursue Agriculture next to help the Rice tile. Other than that we need, in no particular order: Hunting (Ivory), Mining, Bronzeworking (Chops and Spears), Animal Husbandry (See Horses and the Cows), and Pottery (we need Cottages to research faster).
We should build a Panama Canal City where the Warrior in the screen shot is standing. There are better spots resource wise, but that one will get the food bonus and give us an easy short cut between the two bodies of water.
Panth Dec 12, 2005, 08:36 AM I'm not sure about that location. The spot where the corn is would actually be perfect but I don't think we probably want to do that.
I guess the canal might be worth some unused area.
The spot next to the cow works well.
Tboy Dec 14, 2005, 10:48 AM Where's the save Thyrwyn?
Thyrwyn Dec 14, 2005, 11:40 AM Sorry - here it is. Don't know how I missed that. . .
Tboy Dec 15, 2005, 10:43 AM Turn 1 2400BC
Turn 2 2360BC
Researched Monotheism and founded Juadaism in Mecca (YAY!).Started researching hunting, finish in 4.
Turn 4 2280BC
Discover the Greeks to the east, they have no religion as yet.
Turn 6 2200BC
Finished hunting, started on agriculture, finish in 6.
East warrior attacks lion, wins, gets woodsman promotion. Fortified to heal for a few turns.
Turn 7 2160BC
South warrior pops goody hut, gets 51g.
Turn 9 2080BC
Mecca finishes worker, starts on Barracks.
Send worker to quarry and connect stone.
Panth Dec 15, 2005, 11:15 AM Got it. Should be able to play today.
Do you think we should try to get religions ourselves or take down those who found them?
Panth Dec 16, 2005, 04:48 PM Preturn 2000 BC
I can the barracks for a warrior in 5.
We need an escort and to get a settler going ASAP
Progress is sloooow at this point. One day, Mecca will be a very powerful city, but without improvents it ain't doing much.
T1 1960
* The list of 8 Most Advanced civs comes in: we're #7. Frederick takes the #1 spot.
+ Asoka says "Hi."
+ Agriculture -> mining (5)
T2 1920
-blah
T3 1880
-blah
T4 1840
-blah
T5 1800
- warrior -> settler
* worker finishes quarry -> sent to farm rice
*** It would appear that Germany has already set up near that proposed canal city site.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0082.jpg
T6 1760
+ Mining -> Bronze[12] (we need chops badly to reclaim our $ river squares. Plus it looks like copper will be necessary quite quickly here if we want more than this little isthmus up here.)
T7 1720
-blah
T8 1680
-blah
T9 1640
-blah
T10 1600
- Not a helluvalot to report. The pic below shows our recon and borders we've found. Canal city looks like it's out unless we really plan to get all up in Freddy's buisiness.
- Farm will be complete next turn.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0083.jpg
Thyrwyn Dec 17, 2005, 04:48 AM got it. Playing later today/tonight.
Thyrwyn Dec 17, 2005, 11:56 AM Start roading resources
Turn 62 (1520 BC)
Mecca's borders expand
Warrior defeats (0.56/2): Barbarian Warrior
Turn 64 (1440 BC)
Warrior defeats (1.40/2): Barbarian Warrior
Turn 65 (1400 BC)
Warrior promoted: Woodsman II
See several barbarians dancing around the woods near Mecca (1 due west and another to the far NNW).
Turn 67 (1320 BC)
Mecca finishes: Settler: Move him SE to cut off Germany's advance.
Turn 68 (1280 BC)
Mecca begins: Stonehenge: now that Stone is connected, we can build this quickly. The quick culture will help with so many close neighbors. The Great Prophet points will help, too
Tech learned: Bronze Working
Worker finishes roading stone; moves to chop hill; we should mine this and start road towards what will be Medina.
Turn 69 (1240 BC)
Research begun: Pottery
Oops - played 1 to many. Sorry - I'll only play 9 next time.
Turn 71 (1160 BC)
Medina founded
Medina begins: Barracks: this can be changed; a workboat might not be a bad idea as culture will kick in before the boat finishes and we can get the fish. Not sure we can fend of the pressure from our western neighbor, though.
Stonehenge is due next turn
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/Rfest_1160BC.JPG
In no particular order, we need: more troops, another Settler; and we should build the Parthenon. Our next city should either be SW or NE - good resources to be had. I would get Animal Husbandry next.
Panth Dec 17, 2005, 01:18 PM Medina looks good. It doesn't give us the canal, but it does close off our corner. And it will be food-heavy once fish are up so it can actually grow (as opposed to our stagnant capitol.
I vote for another worker at Mecca after Stonehenge, but that's just my opinion. We need chops and farms something fierce there.
Thyrwyn Dec 19, 2005, 08:39 AM I will be unable to play from the 22nd through the 26th. I can play on the night of the 27th. There is a good city spot on the coastal tundra NE of Mecca just west of the wheat - it will be able to work the wheat and the cows and turns the tundra intoa a useful tile.
Send two defenders with teh settler as there have been barbarians wandering around up there.
I would get more troops up soon. The barbs have been respecting our cuturla borders so far, but I do not expect that to continue for long.
Panth Dec 20, 2005, 10:50 AM I will be out until the 27th. Road trip to Cali to see the in-laws.
I like the tundra spot next to the North wheat as well. It gives ocean access, wheat, and cow.
I also like the spot 1 W of the South cow.
Tboy Dec 20, 2005, 12:18 PM I will try to play tonight if I can, but I will be away from the 21st until the 28th due to Christmas, and it looks like most other people are as well, so unless anyone disagrees, I think we should pause until the new year. Any objections?
Panth Dec 20, 2005, 12:37 PM It'll work . . .better to halt while there's nothing going on anyway I guess.
Panth Jan 10, 2006, 02:53 PM Is this getting resumed? It's well after the new year now . . .
Thyrwyn Jan 11, 2006, 08:26 AM I am willing to continue.
Panth Jan 11, 2006, 09:36 AM Well . . . ya wanna just tag-team it until somebody else shows up :mischief:
If so, it looks like you played last so I'll go tonight.
Thyrwyn Jan 11, 2006, 10:04 AM works for me :)
Panth Jan 11, 2006, 07:41 PM Preturn 1160 BC
- Swap Medina to work forested grass
- Eye the German worker on on Medina's border longingly . . .
T1 1120
- Stonehenge completes -> barracks auto-resumes w/ 5 turns left. I'll go ahead and leave it
T2 1080
T3 1040 worker set to camp/road elephant
T4 1000
T5 975 Pottery in -> husbandry [8]
T6 950 Mecca barracks -> granary (we are growing soooooo slooooowly)
- I pull a guy from quarry to forested grass for G-4, granary-12 . . . the production is nice but we need more people.
T7 925
T8 900 Recon info: Germany has at least 3 cities up. Thermopolae had 2 archers inside, now has only 1. Don't know what this means but I like to keep an eye on troop movements.
T9 875
T10
IBT: Mansa wants open borders . . . I decline. We have too much of our corner up here unsettled as yet, and since it's blockaded off at Medina, I'd rather not let people wander around up there until we get it built up a bit more.
Mecca grew this turn - I leave you to change build orders if you like.
Medina grows next turn.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/Pantherfern/Civ4ScreenShot0089.jpg
Tboy Jan 12, 2006, 09:39 AM Back now, sorry for the delay, things came up.
Thwryn, your turn.
Thyrwyn Jan 13, 2006, 01:16 PM I've got it.
Thyrwyn Jan 14, 2006, 12:22 AM Looks good. Need defense badly. I hope we have Horses. . .
Turn 82 (825 BC)
We learn Animal Husbandry. . . and there are no Horses in range.
Turn 83 (800 BC)
So I start researching Archery
Turn 85 (750 BC)
Worker finishes farm; moves across the river to start chopping; should come in just in time to rush some Archers. Switch Civics to Organized Religion and Slavery. We need to get some religion down to Medina; Sign open borders with Alex - we need to spread our faiths and get some friends. Start Exploring Greece.
Turn 86 (725 BC)
Medina Workboat > Barracks
Turn 87 (700 BC)
Learn Archery > begin Iron Working; We need Metal as we will need to fight Axemen soon.
Turn 88 (675 BC)
Mecca Granary > Archer
Turn 89 (650 BC)
Medina grows: 3 I meant to switch Medina to a Worker here but I forgot. I would recommend that the next player do so. We need to get that resource farmed and our cities connected.
Turn 90 (625 BC)
Chop comes in; Mecca Archer>Archer; the carry over will finish the second Archer next turn and put several towards the third Archer queued up after that. Good thing, too: Here come the barbs.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/RFest_625BC.JPG
We need to get some settlers out; one to claim the Iron on the SW peninsula, and one to get that Northern Spot. Our first Great Prophet is due in the next turnset. We could build a Shrine, but I would recommend Researching Meditation and Priesthood after Iron Working and then Using the Prophet to get Theology and found Christianity.
Thyrwyn Jan 19, 2006, 07:09 AM Tboy? Panth? You guys out there?
Panth Jan 19, 2006, 08:53 AM I've been out here . . . watching, doing a lot of waiting.
Thyrwyn Jan 19, 2006, 09:29 AM Take it. I just played.
Panth Jan 19, 2006, 12:14 PM Got it then. Will play tonight.
Panth Jan 19, 2006, 09:36 PM R/L stuff came up - tax time. I'll - play this on Saturday if Tboy hasn't shown.
Tboy Jan 20, 2006, 01:41 PM Just taking a quick look in.
Sorry guys, but due to a mass increase in workload at the moment, i'll have to duck out for the time being. I'll post again if I get the time to play.
Tboy.
