As I'm looking foward to play the first GOTM for CIV 4: I'm wondering how many people will play the first GOTM for CIV4.

I think we will be more than 100 !!!!!!

What do you think ?

I can't wait for the patch so it can start. I'm not a big fan of the multiplayer stuff as I don't particularly like the early rush/harrassment strats that are the most effective ways to win in those. I'm playing a couple SG's, but GOTM and the old civ3 tournament were always my favorite things to do with civ3. In the meantime when not playing my SG's I've been playing single player games just for the hell of it but it just isn't as fun when you have no one to share them with and no one to compare your game with.

What victory condition will people be going for? I think many people will choose peaceful victories this time around since waging cross-continental wars is extremely difficult in civ4 from what I've seen. The galleons don't hold enough units and don't move fast enough, while the tech pace is faster than civ3 tech pace. So I think I could do well if I went with a military victory since there wouldn't be as much competition. But since I like competition and want to be able to compare my game with a lot of people I'm going to go for a peaceful game also. I'm still unsure if it will be diplomatic or space race.

Marcus_Aurelius
Nov 21, 2005, 12:04 PM
Cultural and space race are the only victories that I am skilled at, so those are probably what I will stick with. But I am practicing the art of war, so maybe I will add some other victories to my repertoire. For some reason I have never been good at prolonged military campaigns. I've not been able to get the hang of the diplomatic victories in Civ4 either, I should probably give some attention to that also.

I intend to play.

I was a late starter with Civ III and have worked my way to around Monarch level. Played 3 COTMs with only one win but my play has definately been improving. The Deity COTM put me off the last one.

Talk of Civ IV GOTM is what made me decide to buy Civ IV, so I can get in at ground level rather than wait 6 months and then struggle again.

Looking forward to it!

I'll be playing. Probably well down the ranks as I don't pay enough attention to details to maximise my score, mostly I'm here to see how other's strategies compare to my own so I can improve my game.

I don't know how many G/COTM's I've played but been unable to finish. Too many SG's. Anyway, I'll give this one a try and hopefully be able to finish it. Hopefully.

I took a break from Civ 3 GOTMs to play WoW, but now that my Civ 4 addiction has replaced my WoW addiction, I'll be back for this one, if the patch comes out in my lifetime :) .

I did attempt a come back in the last COTM, but a deity level game is perhaps not the best place to restart a game you've not played for a few months.

Have never played a GOTM before, never even knew it existed, but I intend to start with the first Civ IV GOTM.

I do have a question though. When we play it, do we just submit the final save, or do we publish our turns like in a Succession Game?

LeSphinx
Nov 23, 2005, 02:32 AM
As the patch is not release, the c-iv GOTM 01 will be delayed!
I would like to use a chart in order peole answer the question:
Would you play c-iv GOTM 01 ?
Possible anwser : yes, no, Maybe

Then, we will abe to compared when the result of the first C4-GOTM will be posted ?
But I do not know how to di it ?

I'll play, if the difficulty isn't too hard (which I assume will not be the case with the first GOTM). Currently I can't even win on Noble, I can defend myself and keep my empire running up to the end but I simply can't win.

Assuming that it's the same set-up as the Civ 3 GOTMs, to take part you just have to submit your final save. However there will be a series of threads where people can report their game, SG style, if they wish. With the Civ3 games, I found making notes for the report actually improved my play. Also reading how the top scorers managed their incredible scores isalways a learning experience :) .

I'll play. But my video card makes it so I have to have all the terrain revealed so I won't be able to submit my score

Does the v109 patch fix that problem for you Warden? To prevent cheating the GOTM saves will be password protected, which won't allow opening worldbuilder among other things.

I would like to play, especially since v1.09 just fixed the yield display problem for me.

However, I'm concerned that those of us with poorer video cards will have an unfair advantage over others - since we can still see floodplains through the fog (and hence know the location of rivers).

Not a biggie, but just thought the staff should be aware that this problem still exists for some of us.

EDIT: I've just realised I'm about to be lynched by 100+ GOTM-hungry monsters, so i'm off!!!

Ambiorix you think QSC will be in c-iv GOTM ?

LeSphinx

Shillen
Nov 24, 2005, 06:38 AM
I don't think there will be a QSC. How would you possibly score it? Having a lot of cities isn't necessarily a good thing in civ4. Having a lot of techs is great but someone who went for alphabet first would have the most and some strats don't involve getting a lot of techs at all. And then on to production - the guy who clear cuts every forest in sight is going to blow everyone away in that category, while the person who's saving his forests for later in the game might be using the better strategy...

nerovats
Nov 24, 2005, 07:04 AM
It might not be easy to judge the QSC, but it would be very interseting to hear what people did and also why. I hope a lot of player will write spoilers.

Ambiorix
Nov 24, 2005, 08:47 AM
Ambiorix you think QSC will be in c-iv GOTM ?

LeSphinx
Well, you should ask Ainwood, really.

The QSC was invented way back because the first 80 turns were decisive for the rest of the game. Results were measured in terms of tiles revealed, troops produced, rivals met, etc...

While some elements will still be useful indicators in civ-IV, others will need to be revised. Furthermore : if the game is really more balanced now, it may be possible that the first 80 turns are less decisive compared to Civ3. Or maybe we need to consider less turns. Or more. Which turn is 1000BC now anyways ? Probably less than 80 I suppose...

Still, whether there's a QSC or not, noting down my moves and my thinking behind them improved my game more than anything else. So I'll keep doing it and I hope others will too, so that we can compare.

It might not be easy to judge the QSC, but it would be very interseting to hear what people did and also why. I hope a lot of player will write spoilers.

This is the most important. I went from being an OK C3C player to a much better C3C player (never could get fastest conquest) by reading the detailed posts of the best players. I'll be keeping detailed write-ups to post, which I think is FAR different than before because city specialization, building construction, terrain improvements, tech order, etc can all be very different where there used to be a cookie cutter approach before. Hopefully someone better than me can point some things to improve and someone who needs some tips will have an epiphany reading mine.

I guess it depends on when the first GOTM has to be turned in by. I won't be buying the game until after Final Exams end since I don't want to be distracted. Looks like I will pick up the game sometime around Dec. 14th. Will that give me enough time to jump in? If so, I will play it.

I did it! I was always exited about the gotm for civ3 but the first one i tried i couldnt get the mod to work for that particular gotm. That was more headache then i was onboard for.

However this was vanila and im ground floor this time. I consider this little social a perk of owning civ4 so thanks.

I was a regular contributer to the Civ3 GOTMs for awhile there... (GOTMs18-24 or so...not that anybody remembers/cares). Absolutely loved them. Conquests pulled me away..then life before I could reparticipate in the COTMs...but I do plan to come back now. I have about enough time in life to play 1 game a month...so they may as well be GOTMs. :)

Have only played the tutorial so far...and the one spanish game...which apparently a lot of people played due to the bug....so i still have MUCH to learn...my old Civ 3 strategies are not quite panning out!

My game did crash out a lot in the endgame...I hope this is being taken into account when save games are submitted. I can't stand having to replay the same moves again...and certainly don't want to be accused of doing it on purpose. We'll see.

I'm starting, but I'm not sure I'll actually make it through the game. Had several crashes last night, and am playing with the black terrain bug. Somehow I have a feeling the mods would frown upon the 'map reveal' work-around in a GOTM context. ;)

I have yet to actually finish a game of Civ4 due to crashes, but hopefully I can chip away at this one 30min at a time...
