Have had a chance to read through all the posts. Would suggest as there are six of us we split into two groups of three. For no reason other than they posted first would suggest mysel, Enkidu Warrior and Viper in one game and the other three in another.

If everyone is ok with that suggest we discuss options and get going. Had in mine standard size world, continents and everything else on default.

That's fine. I suggest small size, continent, quick speed. Maybe with another 3 AI? Noble difficulty.

For the player 1 bug, I think what we did is we created a dummy player 1, then disband it immediately. If you are worried about the bugs, I can set up the game.

Here's the lowdown on the fix to the various bugs afflicting the player 1 slot:

The bugs:
In our previous abortive game we came across a bizarre random re-naming of the player in the first slot (me). It's also widely reported that it is impossible for trades to take place between the first player and other human players. We also got some random turn skipping.

There are two ways to avoid these bugs:

Solution 1:
Wait for the patch that was apparently released briefly today then withdrawn to be released at an unspecified time in the future.

Solution 2:
Fill the first slot with a dummy human player when creating the game. Give this civ an appropriate name, choose random or whichever civ you prefer (this civ will become an AI player). Fill the other slots with the real human players and any other AI slots you want. Start the game and take the turn of the dummy human player, immediately resigning and in doing so switching this civ over to AI control. This means that there is no first human slot any more and the trade bug disappears. I've heard that simply filling the first slot with an AI civ to start with doesn't work. Also, although I'm not certain about the exact cause of this, never open a PBEM save game from any other location except your regular PBEM save file (automatically created for you in My Documents - My Games - Civ 4 - Saves - PBEM). Anecdotal evidence would suggest that loading the save from the desktop or removable media results in the dreaded (by me) name changing bug. This bug may in any event be avoided by the above workaround.

I'm happy with the suggested settings, although I would suggest maybe going with quick speed. Also, if we can set maybe one time period a week that we will usually be available to play, we might be able to get through several turns instead of the usual 1 every day or so. This is purely optional however.

I hate to note a problem before the game has even started, but of the 4 e-mails I've sent to petracelli69 all 4 have come back as delivery failure notifications. This would obviously cause some problems once our game starts.

Just to summarise the contents of these messages, the patch has now been released and so should be installed before commencing our game. This should remove the need to do the dummy human player workaround for the player 1 slot. The SMPT field can just be left blank, simply meaning that we will have to manually e-mail our save files. I'd also like to confirm that I'm happy with the settings suggested via e-mail.

Is there a problem that you're aware of with your e-mail petracelli69? Has Viper1812 been able to e-mail you? Perhaps you could sign up for a hotmail account to resolve this problem?

Me and Viper are on hotmail and don't have SMPT addresses. Just leave it blank and manually e-mail the save files.

Just found out that email from RED1 for me has been classified by my mail provider as junk mail!!! This can't be right! Anyway, I have now move your email to my safelist.

I don't have a problem sending them, rather Pertracelli69 has a problem receiving them. Every message gets returned as a delivery failure notification about 24 hours after I send it. The problem must lie with Petracelli's e-mail provider.

When I tried to open your turn, you're right it did crash, but went I tried to open my turn it kept on crashing every time I opened it. So could petracelli69 please resent the save?

Hey RED1, don't think that is possible for me. I will be going outstation tomorrow and not gonna be back until week after (16 Dec). Don't worry tho, I have brought my personal laptop and can continue playing the game without any problem (sending files from internet connection in hotel). It's just that I won't be able to be online for a long time relying on their internet connection! Time between xmas and new year would be fine for me tho.

Indeed, Viper has vanished and seemingly killed off both this game and the other one I'm involved in :( . Unfortunately I can't play online since I have seperate computers for Civ 4 and t'internet.
