I have always wanted to mod something but I'm not a big gamer and most the time when I finally start playing a game that you can mod, any idea I can think of about modding it is already done.

Plus, most non-gameplay mods (and I'm tired of programming, I do that at work) require some artistic ability...I have none (I found out while I was doing design work for a web design company). Luckily, Civ 4's new, I had an idea that wasn't already done and it didn't require much graphic abilities.

I present to you the Civ 4 terrain: Civ 1. Possibly my first, last (and hence best) mod ever! (Map not included.)

http://www.flobi.com/files/civ4/civ4_terrain_civ1_1.jpg

http://www.flobi.com/files/civ4/civ4_terrain_civ1_2.jpg

Installation Instructions
1. Download Here (http://www.flobi.com/files/civ4/civ4_terrain_civ1.zip)
2. Extract to: .../My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4
3. Optional: Get Civ 4 Map: Civ 1 Earth (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=143301)

Removal Instructions
... Actually, the easiest way to remove this is to install Blue Marble then uninstall that cause these two mods use the same file locations.

Note: I did not reproduce mountains because they wouldn't look right with being stretched out like that. Also, did not do hills, jungle, swamp and forest because they work different in Civ4. Actually, I don't remember seeing swamp in Civ4.

If any of you out there with better graphic skills feel like improving on my work, feel free.

And a hint for those thinking about doing terrain mods, just cause the images are all pointed one way doesn't mean they will be when they get to the screen. I.e. make them all look as if there was only ambient light or you might have shadows going in different directions. I tried making the shore use the same lighting style as in Civ 1 and found out that it was rotating some images so it didn't look right. That's why all the shoreline is light green and not light green on one side with dark green on the other like in Civ 1.

there were swamps in civ 1--the dark green tiles with weird purply-bluish blobs on them.

but your download link seems to be broken, it takes me to the overhead screenshot.

Sorry about that broken link. I fixed it. I'm also building a map based on the Civ 1 earth map (http://www.civfanatics.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=335&c=19). Hopefully that will be done tonight, but I'm envisioning that I might have some issues determining the best place for resources. So far, I've got the terrain for north america, saudiarabiaand the arctic platform plotted, and all the continents minus antarctica outlined.

I am glad to see this mod being taken so well. :)

I was saying that there isn't swamps in civ 4 or at least I couldn't find them (I did look after I made that post). I remember the swamps being a light bluish over a plains looking color. What you describe is what I remember the jungle being. In the map in my last post (the screenshot from this site of civ 1), you can see swamp on either side of the nile and jungle in south america.

flobi!

Great work!

I've just posted on Apolyton a request for a usability mod along these lines:
http://www.apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=144234

What you have done is very cool, yet I think Civ1 textures are kind of ugly ;)

Would you try to do something about units and resources? They are more important from a usability perspective. I could then use civ4 terrain and civ1-like resources and units.

I think there's a section on this site somewhere about that. I run mine on an XP system and have to use 1-2-1 options (i.e. vga, system sounds, keyboard/mouse) to get it to run right. You might also look at dosbox. I find dosbox can be a little slow sometimes though. I never did like the isometric view in 2 & 3.

That is so funny!

I won't lie; I'm not gonna be playing this lots (or at all), but I like knowing I could if I wanted to :)

i wrote a retrospective article for 1up about civ 1 back in june, and to really get a feel for it, i played the game again. And was in the office for 6 hours after the day ended. Civ 1 still has the pull that it always has had, even in this modern age =)

I agree totally. Despite the fact that I never enjoyed the isometric views in civs 2 and 3, even after I got civ 4 (which totally rocks), I still find myself popping in a game of civ 1 now and then.

Does this take up significantly less resources?

No. The files are a similar size to the original. The dimentions of the terrain images is actually the same as the ones used in the blue marble mod.

Civ 1 still has the pull that it always has had, even in this modern age =)Absolutely. You know why? Because it goes so fast!! For every new version of civ, moving units and doing stuff takes so much time you never really get in the rhythm (or trance :mischief:), giving you way too much time to realise you should actually quit and go to bed or do something useful. Plus what I always felt was when I saw unspoilt nature it was asking to be cultivated. ;)

Does this take up significantly less resources? If all the rest (units, cities, forests, mountains) were in 2D it would!

Perhaps we should all combine forces and make a complete Civ1-mod! :yeah:

If you guys do make a full civ 1 mod for civ 4 I would be sooo happy. Becuase my pc is below the minimum requirements and it runs slooooooow. I'm sure a lot of other people would use it too.

Hmm a way to do it would be to change the zoomed out veiw, so the command bar stays when the view is zoomed out. And also so that the domestic and military and resources are all shown together as boxes (they can be shown seperatly but not together via buttons by the minimap).

Or the square military/domestic/resource pictures that are shown when you zoom out and go show military/domestic/resource could be used as unit/resource graphics!
