kurdi Nov 23, 2005, 03:10 PM 1- What does "centering the worldmap" mean exactly (this is one effect of building stonehenge)
2- Do I have to research the tech that makes a wonder obsolete for it to do so, or does it become obsolete as soon as another Civilization gets to it
Thanks;)

1. When you first start a game you have no idea where you are in the world (the world is "flat" - you can't use globe view yet, and your civ is the "center of the universe"). Looking at the minimap doesn't give it away as it did in previous versions of Civ. Getting stonehenge will alter the minimap to give you an indication of where you are in the world (and to the size of the world) (I'm not sure what tech does this too, since I usually get stonehenge or fail to pay attention).
2. I'm nearly positive that you have to research the obsoleting tech yourself, which is different from Civ3.
BeefontheBone Nov 23, 2005, 03:16 PM calendar is the tech which centres world view, and in fact obsoletes stonehenge.

Until the map is "centered" you don't really know your civ's precise geographic location (relatively speaking). I can be handy in certain situations -- primarily with regards to exploration and colonization.

That, I don't know.

No in Civ 3 you Also had to research (or get) the obsoleting tech yourself, it was only in civs 1+2 that another civ could obsolete your Wonders.
cleverhandle Nov 23, 2005, 05:28 PM I thought I remembered reading that Wonders were obsoleted when *any* civ discovered the appropriate tech. But I think that applies only to Wonders (not other buildings like Monasteries or to resources like furs), and I haven't tested it in any event.
Din Ohtar Nov 23, 2005, 07:56 PM YOU need to research the tech to make it obsolete, it doesn' t matter if the other blokes research it.
I use it a lot when I delay stonehedge not working - I ALWAYS use it to crank out culture for my frontier cities.

not sure what u mean there- u retain the culture built from something which is obsolete, but lose the other direct benefits of it
Xerol Nov 23, 2005, 08:28 PM Due to a bug, you CAN somewhat tell what direction the center of the map is from the beginning - before your settler comes on screen, you get the little "offscreen bubble", which points towards your settler; the game itself starts in the center of the map, so you can trace that backwards and at least get some idea of what hemisphere you're in and know which way to explore.
