Has anyone figured out the terrain part of the Rules.txt? I can't make any sense of it. I can edit the first few metrics, but after "yes" its anybody's guess. I've messed around with a few thing, but nothing.

Here you go:
Movecost, defense, food, shields, trade,
; . . . Irrigate, bonus, #turns, ai-irrigate,
; . . . Mine, bonus, #turns, ai-mine
; . . . Transform

Irrigate/Mine = yes, no, or type of terrain changed to
; Transform = Terrain type engineers can transform to
;
; bonus = # extra production from that change
;
; turns = # turns for settler to make change
;
; ai = Minimum govt level necessary for
; computer player to want to perform irrigate/mine
; 0 Never
; 1 Imperialism
; 2 Monarchy
; 3 Communism
; 4 Fascism
; 5 Republic
; 6 Democracy

which is supposed to explain this (But doesn't quite)

@TERRAIN
Desert, 1,2, 0,1,0, yes, 1, 5, 5, yes, 1, 5, 3, Pln, ; Drt
Plains, 1,2, 1,1,0, yes, 1, 5, 1, For, 0,15, 0, Grs, ; Pln
Grassland, 1,2, 2,1,0, yes, 1, 5, 2, For, 0,10, 0, Hil, ; Grs
Forest, 2,3, 1,2,0, Pln, 0, 5, 5, no, 0, 5, 0, Grs, ; For

Each terrain entry consists of 4 blocks of data.
1. food-shields-trade paramters
2. irrigation parameters (starting with the yes/no/terrain stuff)
3. mining parameters (starting with the 2nd yes/no/terrain stuff)
4. terrain transformation (whether possible or not, if so what)

This part
"Irrigate/Mine = yes, no, or type of terrain changed to"
details each irrigation/mining block.

The special terrain entries such as wheat or buffalo only list the first block. The irrigation and mining parameters are the same as their basic terrain type.

For what its worth, my advice is to just use the terrain editor.

It means +1 bonus, 5 turns to make the change, and minimum AI (computer player) government to want to make this change. The last number only affects AI players.

For more shields with mining -for instance- you just alter the figures in the "mining block" -you can figure it out if you look at the numbers under mountains and hills.

To my knowledge you cannot add extra trade, unless you make a "special" terrain for it in the next single columns. There are 8 types of terrains, then 8 first types of specials, then 8 second type specials. They all go in the same appearance, as they should in the terrain01.gif-file, if you take one column at a time.

If you feel confused, just experiment a bit with the numbers. It's not really difficult to figure out.

Yours Truly,
Morten

Thanks for the help. it clarifies a litte. However, in the example above:

Desert gives 0,1,0 (no food, 1 shield, no trade)

If "yes" = irrigate, then you get 1,5,5 (which I read as 1 food, 5 shield, 5 trade). however, when I do this in the game, I only get the 1 food, not 5 of anything.

Or does 1,5,5 mean 1 bonus (??, extra production where? the food? what if I want to add 1 trade or 1 shield?), 5 turns to make the change, ai value 5 (minimum Republic for computer to want to perform change).

So the third block: yes 1,5,3
is 1 bonus, 5 turns, 3 (minimum communism)?

Thanks Morton, I've got it working now.

PS what do I have to do to get my warrior icon that accompanies my post, upgraded to something interesting?

The icon images are based on the number of posts you have made. When you get over 100, it should change to the phalanx (not much of an improvement).
