WE are all Civ'ers, so we know the concept. What are the really significant discoveries of the ancient world? Some thoughts.

The invention of fire making,
agriculture/irrigation
animal husbandry
grape cultivation
wheel
smelting
iron working
steel - Assyria, 3rd century BC
writing - Mesopotamia 3rd millennium BC
the alphabet - Phonecia 2nd millennium BC
Indian numeration - This one might be traceable - India 5th century BC
cement - Rome 3rd century BC

Of the things that have set the West apart from the East through the years, Greek style reasoning, Monotheism and the alphabet seem the most significant.

The needle...

No need to slag off throwing on assorted animal skins, but if you want to live in the temperate regions you'd better learn how to stitch things together nice and tight.
