I thought that getting a diplo victory in Civ 4 would be near impossible...I mean, with 7 religions it never seems like you can get that many votes in the UN. Here's what happened.

Game Type: Noble, Continents, all normal options, playing as Chinese.

Vicky and I start on a large continent in the northern part of the world. Neither of us gets any of the first religions, and I'm worried about her moving in on my resources, so I spend part of the early game trying to boost culture along our border and keep my side of the continent firmly in Chinese hands.

Bam. I land confucianism. I begin spamming missionaries into Vicky's lands. She has to religion yet, so getting her to convert is a cinch. Presto. She's my lapdog for the rest of the game. (I wish there was still a vassal state option!) ;)

I'm still not sure what kind of victory I'll be able to do, but I secured some stone and marble early on and the wonders are popping out like crazy. During the course of the game, I never touch the culture slider and TWO of my cities hit legendary culture. Poor Vicky loses 3 cities to my superior cultural might...anway....

My explorers run into a few more characters (there are 5 civs in the game) Cyrus is a good guy but playing for the wrong team. I send fleets of missionaries to try and convery him but they never take hold, he's in a Block with Isabella...which is bad, because she hates my "heathen superstition."

Hatshepsut is all alone on an island near my Anglo-Sino Alliance. She's cordial enough but rather self-absorbed. She and Izzy fight a little but she never gets on my side, despite my missionary rush.

Now the late games comes in and I aim for a diplo victory, but how to make this work? Izzy hates me, continues to threaten war, and is keeping Cyrus' votes from me because he's afraid of her. Hatshepsut couldn't care less about me but Vicky worships the ground I walk on.

Time to pull some magic. Izzy's weakness is her obsession with religion. I use the UN to make free religion universal. Izzy goes from hating me to being just unpleasent. Perfect... Now I begin to butter up Cyrus and his large but peaceful empire. Here's some techs buddy... Here's some gold. Now he's my friend. Excellent.

I run a vote in the UN. Vicky myself and Cyrus vs....Isabella...and Hatty abstains. ARGH, I miss winning by ONE vote. Now I'm mad. One vote...what to do. I wait a few turns and try again, but Hatty and Izzy's votes continues to grow and neither will give them to me.

Task Force Omega is brought into action. This carrier group has destroyers, battleships and subs, as well as some good air cover....which protects my fleet of LCs. I drop a dozen tanks and artillery on Isabella's doorstep. In a couple turns I have her largest city. THAT changes the balance of power!

I run the vote gain. Boo yah. Diplomatic victory with only one short war. :)

Isn't it strange how many diplomatic victories are often won in Civ via conquering a city of two.

Somehow feels like cheating heh
