IIRC, citizens won't complain about being undefended until size 3.

It's something like that, though I think it might be different for each difficulty level.

Also, the amount of people who are unhappy for this problem depends on the city size.

For example, I just tried this with a size 20 City and 6  people are unhappy.

happiness penalty for undefended cities seems to be 33% of the city size (at noble difficulty). also note that each type of cathedral adds +1 happy for incense, so a city having a cathedral for each religion gets a total of +8. the palace also gives +1 for your capital

You also have Globe Theatre = No unhappiness in the city you build it.

Isn't it +9 for the cathedrals? You get +1 for incense for each of the seven religions, and +2 for your state religion.

When I trade resources,e.g., silk for wheat, other civilizations seem to offer what I already have back to me. Do we lose the resource if we trade it?

Yes, unless you have multiple sources.

The slavery unhappiness can last longer than 10 turns if you do slavery multiple times. I've seen -3 penalty for "We cannot forget your creul oppression), and seen it say I'd get -1 for something like 27 turns if I whipped out the current item. I haven't tried to work out the exact formulas though.

I think it also is dependant on game length.
