View Full Version : civ3 save game map revealer by Zhura
Zhura Jan 16, 2002, 08:10 PM Till now I didn't find a program that reveals map.
So I decided to create one - and here it is!
Simply make save map.sav place reveal.exe in the same directory and run it.
It make for you revmap.sav - with entirely open map!
Please send your questions to szhura2@hotmail.com
[Old version removed after 199 downloads]
Zhura Jan 17, 2002, 08:27 AM Oh, 14 downloads and no one replies!?
But on the other hand - no one blame me, so I guess is works fine :-)
Zhura Jan 17, 2002, 06:39 PM Here's version 0.3
All the same but it makes all terrain VISIBLE (without any shadows) - so now you can see enemy units (and villages)!
And I still awaiting for comments...
Dark Sheer Jan 18, 2002, 06:52 AM Well, there are more people who want to download as compare to those who willing to give feedback on the forum ;)
My Modern Frigate has over 500 downloads and less than 20 comments
hanZ Jan 18, 2002, 07:33 AM playing with revealed map is cheating. so people may like your tool, but noone wants to be blamed as a cheater. i think this explains the lack of comments .-)

I guess that can explain the lack of comments on the SaveGame editor in C3CT. I get comments on the Copytool, but not the savegame editor. :enlighten
okfine68 Jan 18, 2002, 07:40 PM Thanks man, it's a cool util... saves me from sending ships all over the world to see whats up
Asuka Jan 21, 2002, 10:21 AM This could prove to be very useful with creating maps. One notable flaw (unless ive just overlooked it) is the lack of
1) Minimap and
2) Zoom ability
in the civ3edit tool. Creating the overall look of maps then becomes very difficult. However, imo this util could solve that problem...

Zhura Jan 21, 2002, 06:00 PM Thanks for every reply to all of you!
This is my first program sharing via Inet - so I guess I just want to feel useful :-))
To other save game editor creators: I may reveal details of algorythm - send me a letter...
guest Jan 24, 2002, 07:36 AM I just wanted to say that you made a nice program. I think it's a little strange that the save needs to be named map.sav however. Is there a reason that you did not just have the user input the name of the file and then do the same rev[mapname].sav thing?
Laura
Zhura Jan 25, 2002, 12:44 AM I used default name (map.sav) to avoid any errors with long names - because my program is a DOS program. And it seemed to me that typing a file name is the same waste of time that of saving another save game :-))
But I make another new version if other players tell me that it need to be done...
jraohc Jan 29, 2002, 06:44 AM I love it! I like being able to check out my map at the beginning of a game to see if I want to keep playing.
The only problem I had was getting started -- I downloaded the file without fully reading the instructions in your post. I would have liked a readme with the zipped up exe.
CrsadrJoe Jan 29, 2002, 11:07 PM Great utility Zhura! Works pretty fast too. What language did you use?
Zhura Jan 29, 2002, 11:49 PM Language - C, compiler by Borland for DOS.
About speed: I used reading file by byte - so I guess if rewrite it and make it read blocks of bytes program may be 5-10 times faster ;-))
About readme: when you run it program tells you how it works. I thought that will be enough...
jraohc Jan 30, 2002, 08:08 AM I thought there was writing on the DOS box when I run the program, but it always disappears so fast that I couldn't actually read what it said. So, for me a readme would have been nice.
Zhura Jan 31, 2002, 01:37 AM I am sorry, but it's still not enough for a new post. Guess you always can run a DOS Prompt (I use FAR Manager) to see what it writes. Again - I'm sorry but I'm too lasy to make a normal windows interface for this program. And again - to developers of savegame editors - I can reveal algorythm...
Umask077 Feb 02, 2002, 08:05 PM As someone whos written many cheats and hacks for games great work on this. Its only bug if you havent reaveled the whole map first you will find you can directly scroll too far. 15 or 20 squares from your city and it stops. Minimap still works though.
I was in the process of hacking out how to permanatly steal plans when I found your hack. My only real complaint is god, once you run it on a huge map later in the game the turns reall do take forever, Have to hold the shift key or you'll die of old age beforey you get your turn. Thats due to the animation of enemy units and no fault of yours (well that a stupid ai moving them around when there no reason to).
Great job...
Side note, Dont let anyone give you junk about using Borland C. I use Turbo C 4.01 (copyright 1988) for alot of my quick hacks. Comes on 4 5 1/4 single sided floppys.
The originial civedit for Civ1 was written by a friend of mine wolvy using qbasic. The right tool for the right job. If it works for you, use it.
Zhura Feb 03, 2002, 10:11 AM it seemed to me that scrolling start working fine after you touch minimap or one of your units or something...
and I *deliberately* used default name revmap.sav to avoid such situations as you described. on a later stages of playing my program may be used to observe STATIC situation, after you get back to map.sav ...
Hagbart Feb 16, 2002, 09:53 AM hmm... probably a great utility, but its quicker just to save the game as multi.sav and load it again. But goodjob done! :goodjob:
Hagbart Feb 16, 2002, 09:55 AM NOT that i'm a cheater  :p :o
Zhura Feb 17, 2002, 11:01 AM Oh, where have you been 2 month ago? :-))
I have to admit that your example is better than my program...
but it still has more than 600 downloads and I'm glad :-))

That will be gone in next patch.
Wiseone Feb 28, 2002, 11:18 AM Sounds like it's a great tool but it doesn't do anything for me. Did they change something in 1.17 that makes this not work properly?
Maybe I just did something wrong?
Win2kPro
rename my game to map.sav
run reveal03.exe
load civ3
load save game revmap.sav
That's it right?
Thanks.
Zhura Mar 04, 2002, 03:16 AM yet not tested with 1.17
be done as soon as possible...
may be you can send me you save in zip to szhura2@hotmail.com
to speed up this process?
kingbob Apr 16, 2002, 03:22 PM Might as well wait a few days. 1.21 patch is supposed to be released Friday.

Does this work with 1.21f? Is there a map revealer that works with 1.21f?
Thanks,
Beam Jul 29, 2002, 07:13 AM Zhura,
Will there be an update for 1.29f? Can be very useful in preparing mods!
HighCouncil Jul 31, 2002, 01:44 AM Here's your comment:
Some say, I'm a cheater, but they just say that, because they can't cheat on their own.
I AM A CHEATER!!!
AND????
I HURT NOBODY WITH THAT!!!
Playing with a revealed map is just a help. I mean, what could you do so greatly, if you see thousands of enemy units??
The tool is cool
disorganizer Aug 06, 2002, 03:49 AM another question:
would it be possible to generate a map with all areas hidden that you cant see in the game?
background:
simplify making maps for games without "cheating" to have others see the whole world. an example would be the demogame, were tools extracting the whole map are not allowed.
the idea would be to have a tool to extract the same thing you can see by scrolling thru the game into a graphic (png?). unknown areas as well as the "fog of war" must be maintained.
at the moment, this is hard screenshot-cut&paste work.
foreveryoung Aug 22, 2002, 09:25 AM Hi!
It didn't work for me.
Does it work for v1.29?
I renamed my file to map.sav, then placed it in the same directory as reveal03. There are no other files in the same directory. Just reveal03 and map.sav.
I double clicked reveal03 and revmap.sav came up.
I copied revmap.sav into my Saves folder of my civ3 directory and loaded the "saved" game.
But it doesn't show me the whole map.
Do you know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks.
[c0w]GoesMoo Aug 27, 2002, 11:15 AM So, any word yet on 1.29? A map revealer would
be very helpful for mod makers. I start my world
just post WW2, and bloody h*ll it is no fun moving
80 50-move man-of-war around big maps just to
reveal the map for myself and the computer
players (via trading). I'll code it myself if
I knew now =)
Zhura Nov 14, 2002, 02:19 AM I abandoned game long ago - so I guess there is no reason to wait another version from me...
guess that this is my last post on this forum - and sorry again...
Adrain May 03, 2004, 02:42 PM Zhura,
I know you've stopped working on this program now.
That is OK but I hope you can help me.
I am looking for info about Save Game (*.SAV) files in Civ3.
Any parts of the file are good - Map info; Rules info; anything.
-Adrain.
CornMaster May 06, 2004, 08:18 PM Maybe this will help?

Adrain May 07, 2004, 06:08 AM CornMaster,
Thx 4 that.
I was actually interested in filling out on some info not posted on that thread (yet?) which I guessed Zhura might know as he's programmed with it.
I guess he's maybe lost interest in this topic so I'll see if I can work some out by looking at the data some more.
Then, when I've finished, I'll get a life.

i agreem i think that online onlime cheating sucks, i dont hurt anyone when i cheat at solo.
i play a lot of games online (d2, civ3, rtcw, wolf:et, ut2k3,...) and i dont cheat at any of them, but when i'm playing offline sometimes i like to cheat for 2 reasons:
1-it may help if i'm totaly f*ck3|) up
2- in same cases it is FUN! :D
soz for this off topic
about the tool i like it, bue i use gramphos SGE (u said u didnt have comments on that) which as a option similar to this utility.
but keep on going! i would like to have youir programing skills and time to do some like this.
SpyderOne May 17, 2005, 01:55 PM Strange.....it doesn't seem to work on my computer.....
Adrain May 18, 2005, 03:04 AM That could be because changes have been introduced in recent versions which cause the code not to work correctly.
Bear in mind, this was developed quite a while ago and is no longer supported by its author.
On the other hand, it may be a local issue on your PC or with your set-up.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48270
This thread above may help but only for understanding of the issues - it won't get the job done for you.
Morfos Jul 01, 2005, 12:15 PM How do I use it?
