A nice strategy that I use that worked very well at nobility for the Romans. I was able to reach future tech by 1800 while AI was still building longbowman and musketman. As a Roman you can beat your competition due to their advantages with wonders. This strategy up to the modern era can used to support your military and cultural objectives.
Build Pyramids and select representive government. (most important wonder in the ancient era)
Strive for growth. Your cities need to be large. Romans have a natural advantage as they have expansive trait as well. Once the city becomes large specialists will emerge. Any specialists will receive 3 beakers for research even if their not scientists.
build libraries, great library, monasteries, and create as many specialists as scientists. (each scientists are worth 6 beakers). When a great scientists forms create academies to farther your technology leap over the AI.
Discover mercantilism. Many beleive that this economic civic is worthless. Well it is unless you have representive as your government civic. However, the best way to impliment this startegy is to not sign open borders with the AI. This benefits them not you and may push them down.
Select caste system if you research right will be availble shortly. This gives you more flexibility with specialists and more money it seems.
By this point you should have many specialists throughout your civilization. Building Sistine Chapel allows these specialists to produce culture as well.
build Statue of liberty so that you can enjoy one more free specialists in every city. This wonder is quite useful and will be the last one that you need.
Previous you should have your religious civic as pacism. This allows great scientists to emerge at a greater rate. Change to free speech later which would be the effect of adding a monastery to every city.
