Edit: Ginger_Ale and Mike made good points.

So we are all in agreement to wait for a name until we have Civilization? Do we still agree that the Civ should be random?

Sorry, I think we first need to decide on a Civilization. The civilization greatly changes our name (ie; DG5 was Japan, DG6 was England, and now DG7 is Greece - one name doesn't really fit all).

Shall we have a Civilization debate & vote, then? There's so many choices, how should we narrow it down first?

Whether we choose our Civ by vote or random, we should probably choose it now. I say vote for traits first, then vote for leaders with the Top 3 traits.

I chose India personally, they have the most usefull UU, nice leader choices, and they have mysticism allowing us to found a religion. Their is IMHO no other good option. If we choose India the title Union of Indian Provinces and Territories would get my vote. Viva la UIPT

most usefull UU,

I haven't played with India, how is the fast worker that useful?

The fast worker is powerful if you need to improve tiles which are far apart. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

I would think we should choose our leader characteristics, since they have a far greater impact on how the game should be played than UU. Another option is to choose by starting techs. See Civ4 Leader Picker (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/reference/leader_picker.html) for a nice application which helps decide what leader to play.

The fast worker is useful because it saves you a turn everytim you build something on a different square. SO if you have two cities that are 5 squares apart it would normally take 10 turns to build a road between them. But with the fast worker you save one turn each time allowing you to build it in 5 turns. This allows for quick early expansion and resource grabbing.

plus with the fast worker you get a effective UU from turn 1 to turn 250

India also has very useful leader traits. Ghandi is spiritual which allows us to not have an Anarchy while changeing civics or religion and he is Industrius which is a huge boost when it comes to wonder production. It also allows us to build forges increaseing the amount of sheilds in our cities.

My conclusion

From a strict gameplay viewpoint, I would go with India, but Greece has a nice poetic element, being the birthplace of democracy and all.

The regular worker in Civ4 has a movement rate of 2 so India's rate of 3 isn't that big of an advantage.

One again I believe the leader should be completely random so we have an equal chance of getting any leader not just those that have many partisans to push for them.

Agreed! I'm all for a random-selection. Especially in the 1st ever Civ4-DG...

Why not go with Persia? We could harken back to the first Civ3 Democracy game where we played as Persians. :D

I would pick Rome, the true creator of Western civilization, and the very base for our present modern community. Praetorian is an awesome unit for city assaults, and the traits are excellent as well.

Alternatively, I may like to go with Random, for the adventure.

If we have yet to start a game then I am definitely going to be involved with this one.

I personally feel (since there is no way of pleasing everyone) that we choose "Random" as our Civ.

As well we should "Randomize" as much as we can. It's not like we humans had a choice of the world we were going to inhabit right? Nor do we have a choice about what nation we are born into.
