View Full Version : NEWBIE Hall of Fame Gauntlet mistake
frankwmyers Dec 08, 2005, 08:08 AM So I am excited to be playing CIV 4. I win my first game (just under 20 hours) on Noble and decide to ramp it up to Prince.
Finding the Hall of Fame Gauntlet game - I'm like "cool." I was doing Prince next anyways. I print out the requirements and take it home for my hour lunch break from work - to get a game started I could dwell on for the rest of the work day.
An hour and a half later I tear my self away compltely psyched about my start. I went through the requirements in the game set-up. Set the only victory condition to space race. Get started. By time I go back to work, seven cities two by conquering! Sure the maintenence is kicking me in the ass but I got plans to deal with that.
BUT THEN reading through the forums here I find out that "victory condition =Space Race" DOES NOT mean you set the victory condition to only space race! JEEEEZZZZ I wish you guys could have been a little clearer about that next time....
Going home here in a few minutes, get a quick dinner to go, and start over. I doubt I'll have that good a start again.... :)

I've updated the Guantlet thread and page to remind players to read the rules. Hopefully that will help! ;)

Well good luck with that frankwmyers. As long as you're enjoying the game that's the main thing!
thordk Dec 09, 2005, 03:35 AM talking about mistake... i just wanted to fiddle around with space race victory, never tried this on higher diffs than noble.
starting with the best possible locations for my first three cities (marble, stone, copper, iron, corn, cow, sheep, pigs, crabs, fish, clams, flood plain, hills, lots of wood inside their X radius) just to find out my nearest neighbours are alexander and isabella, hating me... i spend more time war mongering than anything else.
wish i could restart the game with some more peaceful leaders ^^
frankwmyers Dec 09, 2005, 06:02 AM Ok played my game to be submitted. I think I have followed all the rules. So later this afternoon I'll try to upload the game. For some reason that seems hard, but I'm sure as I work my way through it it won't be...

Instead of just reminding people to read the rules - why not just make a note?
"Note: Though the gauntlet is for spacerace wins you must not set it as the only winning condition while creating the game."

I've added a note, but we ARE serious about you all reading the rules. In the long run it will save a lot of time, both yours and ours.
WaxonWaxov Dec 13, 2005, 09:57 AM Another mistake....
I made a non gauntlet, but still HOF game. I thought the rules were "three civs minimum for a small map" as opposed to "three OPPONENTS minimum for a small map" so my game was rejected.
I guess in this "beta" time for HOF the moderators should take the time to make the rules idiot proof. Have you ever read the rules for the TV show Survivor? They're like 70 pages long. I'm not saying they should be that in depth, just very specific.

They always build a better class of idiot though. I'm not reading the CIV hof rules until I get a decent computer, but the Civ3 hof rules are all fairly specific. I assume the new ones are similar and/or cut & pasted for a lot of them.

Actually, very few wound up being simple cut and paste...most were scrapped.
syneris Dec 15, 2005, 03:56 PM I've also noticed atleast one person who posted thier log on the Beta Gauntlet 1 that is doing normal speed instead of epic. The main issue i have is forgeting to set it to prince instead of noble. Custom games don't keep all the setting like Play Now does :(

I didnt even realize the speed required was Epic - I normally play Normal or Quick, but I have been using Epic for the gauntlet because its easier to get earlier scores.
