Hey as the start date is quickly approaching i thought i would start this topic.

Our nation needs a name, it needs a flag, it needs a motto, and it needs a Anthem.

Of course some things might need to wait for the picking of civilization so this thread can stay open for all that.

Also things like coat of arms and national birds ect are good. We need these things to bring us together as a nation. As the first demogame we need to set a good example.

As for Anthem i would like to propose "Our Constitution" by Swiss Empire

I do honestly feel we should establish what our civilization is before we go picking a flag. I mean what if we settled on a Japanese name, motto, anthem... but we pick China? A little difference between the two no?

Hi been lurking for a while and just now signed up. I like Swissempire's flag and anthem.

Just so you know robopigs flag is symbolize the darkness of the world, with the blue band being our civilization which stands for hope,glory,libery and culture

OK here is my flag, Blue = Tradtional, Purple = change white = the peace between them, the 3 symbols = Weblings for CIV plus the cross is religion, the hand is defense and the thumb is the sign of our freedom

For the longest time I was trying to attach this image.

Well the star is a symbol of unity, the diagonal stripes are a symbol of our reach towards peace and prosperity, and the pillar in the middle stands for strength.

The name I prefer for our nation would be Augostine.

Our motto should be something like "Forward."

I don't really care what our anthem is.

I don't have any ideas for the other areas, but I wanted to post my idea for a flag on here.

The white symbolizes peace. The red symbolizes war. They come together at the center, where there is a gold star. This star symbolizes trust: trust in ourselves, our fellow citizens, our military, our government, and our God.

Side note: I'm pretty good with graphics programs, so if we decide on someone else's flag, I'd be willing to remake it so it looks more 'pretty'. :)

I don't quite like the "Sigma improved" version of Swissempire's flag. A flag and a typical free-scaling symbol (meaning it can be scaled to any size, very large or very small), and a basic rule for free-scaling symbols is: Do not use 3-D effects.

Also, the rectangles are somewhat disproportioned. The four "squars" in the middle are not really square.

I was under the impression that Swissempire was satisfied with the version of his flag that I made. I saved the original vector PNG so I can resize the flag to any size that I want, and it will still look okay. And I added some 3D effects to the cross in the center because I wanted it to stand out.

It's up to Swissempire if he wants me to change the redone version of his flag.

Critisizing other people's work is easy, doing it yourself is hard. With that in mind, I present you my own enhanced version of Swissempire's flag design:

I've never heard of "vector PNG", The official PNG website clearly states (http://libpng.org/pub/png/#history): "PNG (pronounced "ping") is the Portable Network Graphics format, a format for storing bitmapped (raster) images on computers."

The avatar version looks just fine, and while the icon version does not retain all of the details, I'd argue that neither does yours, but both do enough to make it identifiable. Once you drop down below a certain size, it is impossible, especially for a flag this busy, to make an image that looks just as good as a larger version.

As for my reasoning behind the 3D effect, the webpage with the flags that you showed were all 2D, redrawn, images. As you can see from the image of a star that I attached (which is taken from the American Flag), flags in real life are very much 3D and have texture. If this flag were to be stiched in real life, it could be done in such a way that it promoted the cross in the center, making it look raised. So why must we restrain ourselves to using only a flat 2D flag, when we can have one that looks more like a real one would?

I nominate the plane star in the above post. It is simple and looks good. The star represents Power. The fact that their is one represents our unity and the blue represents the fact that we are better then other nations. The white of the star represents peace.

I certainly do know what a vector image is - I'm using Illustrator (as opposed to Photoshop, though Photoshop has a pretty extended feature set for vector elements now), a vector graphic program (and a direct competitor of Fireworks - though Adobe and Macromedia have now mergered - what an irony), am I not? Still, "vector PNG" sounds very strange to me, but I googled for "fireworks vector png", and indeed it seems Fireworks has some sort of a "vector PNG" format, which appears to be a perprietary extension of the common PNG format.

I agree that the flag is too complex to look nice and clear as an icon. But I disagree with your judgment about your avatar version, which btw exceeds the 70 * 70 size limit. In particular, the 3-D gradient of the red square has made it look more pink than red. This is a common effect when gradient gets scaled down, and it just doesn't look good.

Because it *is not* real, it's meant for computer screen. Why, do you think, do different versions of a flag exist in the first place? Because depending on the medium, different versions look more or less fitting. On a low-res medium like the computer screen, readability comes first, especially when the size goes down. For the same reason, vector fonts (like the most common ones, Times New Roman, Arial, etc.) still have a bitmap version (called "hinting bitmap") of each character stored inside for display on the computer screen (they are only used below a certain size, like 12, above that the vector version is taken and scaled).

Design for the right medium, that principle is being violated by your idea of "simulating" a "real" flag.

A poll over all this will be posted over all this once we find out what civ we are (we're going with a random one). Traditionally, there's been a desire to do a bit of theme naming to correspond with our in-game nation (for example, DG2 was Fantika (Germany), DG3 was Fanatica (Rome), DG4 was Fanatica (France), DG5 was Japanatica (Japan), DG6 was Fanatannia (England), and DG7 is Fanatikos (Greece)).

Well, personally I would like this, too. But I think others may consider different versions of a things to be different things. Maybe we need a pre-poll to decide if or not we should make the decision two-step? (Btw, it wouldn't be limited to the flag, the anthem may allow some "patching" as well.)

wow i'm really confused. Are we using flat or 3-d or both? I'm so lost, as you guys will remember i made my original flag in paint! I just figured our what the .jpg or somthing like that was. Could someone sum the debate up, i like summaries:p

When designing my flag and redoing yours, I used some 3D effects that I thought made it look better, but some people disagreed.

I imagine we would first vote on which flag design to use (yours, mine, or the other ones that were proposed). After the design was decided upon, we would then vote on which version to use (i.e., if my flag was picked, we'd vote on using the 3D one at the top of the page, or the flag one a couple posts later). Does that help?

Also, Bengeance your anthem needs words, and Octavian X are you putting a Fanatica type name into the nomination pool? This is for only 4 things. Who will organize the unit and city names, and the landmark names. Not to get all buerocratic( Hooverdam i can't spell) but i thiink we need a name office. Not to decide the names, but to organize and clarify and listify and all that jazz! With an organized list look at all the new entries. I don't know how to go around lobbying for this office(thread) could someone tell me how?:eek:

I'm impressed by your openness towards criticism. :goodjob: This is much better, but allow me to make a suggestion: Use full yellow (R 100%, G 100%, B 0%; or #ffff00) for the star. The current yellow (#cdcc00) looks a bit "dirty", the full yellow would brighten thing up. And while you're at it, you may replace the "almost full red" (#fe0000) with the full red (#ff0000) as well - it won't make any visual difference now, but it could when the image is eventually used in future processings.

The yellow on the New flag looks to off.

I for one like 5_stars the best. It looks like it could be a rel flag, but still kinda cool looking. :thumbsup:

It was originally intended to be gold, but it's really hard to make gold look good without some kind of "shine" effect. So I present to you the yellow version:

I understand. But for a graphic that doesn't contain natural elements like gradient and lightening, using lossless format is far better. In fact, since there are only so few colors in use, a palette PNG (the common PNG, not Macromedia's own PNG) should be the best choice. My avatar for example is just that, a palette PNG with only 64 of the maximum of 256 colors being used.

No we can't! There are other people, like myself, who also want to make submissions eventually, but only *after* it's determined which civ/leader we're playing. So there should not be a poll before the game has been created.

There is nothing wrong to use the default name for a week or two until the new name is decided. And the civ/leader is *of course* relevant for the name, flag, motto, anthem, etc. For instance, we may want to name everything in the native language of that civ.

Plus, I never use "*insert nation here*". "Out nation" is a much better choice.

Yeah, I agree. Lets say that we end up with Gandhi and India. We might very well want to make a concerted run at all religions and then we could very well want a flag that reflects that decision. It won't hurt to be default for a while.

Let's put it this way: A decision now would not be legally binding because a binding decision would require that the citizens be *informed* about the decision they make. This is currently not the case, we are not informed at all, as the most important information (our civ/leader) is not available.

- The red lines of the Pyrimid symbolizes power.

I would like to submit a flag Idea! I absolute love egyption symbolism! So what I did was I took the ankh, which is sacred, and used it in my flag to represent cities (Like in the United States where stars represent states) which are sacred to us, since what is our civilization without cities? And then I took the crook and flail, which were placed on the pharoahs at burial, in order to represent that we have laid our beloved pharoahs to rest, and have taken up the call of democracy! It could be a positive or negative that the flag ankhs vary as the game goes on. Anyway, here are my examples, one city, and five cities. Plus, it kind of matches our in game flag in appearance.

Edited in: I was just thinking, although I feel that the crook and flail represent the death of the monarchy and the birth of our sacred democracy, perhaps the symbol on our in game flag, which I believe represents ra? (Correct me if Im wrong) Should be included? Maybe in place of the ankhs? Or incorporated in some other way? Feel free to modify my flag idea and add stuff and such. I really do like that eye of ra thing, to guide us through time :P

Seeing as we have 10 different flag ideas a poll should start up pretty soon. Also, we need to discuss our nation name, motto and anthem.

Since no poll is up on nations flag I can squeeze in a second, somewhat more conventional, contribution. What it represents...well, mother Egypt is watching her neighbours so they walk like Egyptians...or else :lol: .
