Hello,
I've never post to these forums before, although I have read quite a bit. I wanted to let people know about a free software called hamachi, which essentially sets up virtual private LANs between computers while requiring little configuration effort. With the software people log on to the same network (using a unique network name and a password) and then it is as if they have direct connections with each other via a LAN hub. To play a multiplayer game you just use the "LAN" option rather than internet to create a civ4 game. I am not sure to what extent it makes games more stable although I feel it likely does relative to gamespy. Another good thing about the software is that several people can become members of a network and then easily see what other players are online to set up a game, without having to have the civ4 internet client running. I highly encourage you to try it, I am (almost) always ready to play since I am on Christmas break. I set up a network just for this thread so hopefully many people will join and it will be easy to get games going.
Here is an outline of what you need to do to join network:
1) Goto www.hamachi.cc and download the windows client
2) Install
3) Follow the instructions for connecting to a network (there is a start-up wizard for the first time)
4) When prompted for the network name, enter "People Who Play Civ4" (I'd assume client is case-sensitive)
5) For the password, enter "noquitters"
6) Right-click on my name and send a message (or to anyone else who is online)
The networks set up appear to be persistent so you don't need a new one all the time. Also, you should know that the software appears to make any shared folders you have accessible to others who are connected. I don't know a whole lot about the security risks involved with this, but hopefully there are not any malicious hackers reading this thread.
Please join the network and play!
