What is a good XML editor to use? I'm trying to enable the barbarian civ, but my XML files always open in a web browser, and I cannot edit the code. Thanks.

I use not pad. Bad for the eyes but it gets the job done. right click on a xml file and click on properties to change the default program that it opens with.

Futzy has a good program you can use. A little buggy for me but it still works.

Definitely go with Cooktop v2.5. No price, bug-free, and it actually color-codes everything so it's not that harsh on the eyes. It also comes with a very accurate syntax checker, so if you make a mistake and ask it to check, it'll find it.

I love the Microsoft Visual Studio Express tools... they all have excellent XML support, and they're free

I use UltraEdit, mainly because I have it, and because it has a nice little replace function which I like to use.

XMLSpy is definitly the best, and only costs a few hundred dollars. :(

Like I posted before, unless you have a few hundred dollars to spend on XMLSpy, definitely go with Cooktop v2.5. It's free, bug-free, and it actually color-codes everything so it's not that harsh on the eyes. It also comes with a very accurate syntax checker.

XML Spy is free...

Unless you want to pay for it.

I downloaded the 2006 Professional Edition from their site - free.

I see where you can get the eval for 30 days for free, but its time bombed. Do you see a place on their site where you can get a non-timed bombed version for free?

They have the free home use version which is powerful enough for most modding Civ4.

Notepad rules!
If I ever get confused with brackets or the like, I check it in jEdit (free, nice, color-coding, multi-window) but I just prefer notepad.

I'm really surprised that no one uses BBedit or HTMLkit... both have xml along with html, not that you'd need the latter for anything here, but they are both nice suites... htmlkit I think is free also... bb is not.

The "free" home edition only allowed features for 24 hours.
It also needs you to download a license but that probably doesn't matter.

Noreplad++ is free and good and has xml syntax coloring. The windows notepad is only for mad guys who have too much time. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php

I love the grid view but I can only use it once/day in their "advanced features trial mode" since it doesn't come in the home edition. And the professional edition that includes this feature costs a few thousand dollars.

Is there something I am missing?
