View Full Version : Need a pcx program

Hey, everyone. Since the idiots at Firaxis had to use pcxs and all those goshdamn palletes for graphic creation, I need a new paint program. MS paint works great, but won't save graphics in pcx format. The program I normally use (Wally) works awesome, but it is not designed to edit images over about 1000x1000, (as unit makers know, most storyboards are much larger than that) and works extremely slow with images that big; plus, most of the time it gives me an error (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/6557/glitch4iu.jpg) when I try to export storyboards to FLICster. I have also tried GIMP, but it's difficult to use and gives me the same error (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/6557/glitch4iu.jpg) when I try to edit units. Then Chris85 told me to use the shareware version of PSP 3.11, but I got some "MS-DOS" or something "needed to operate program" message, which I have gotten before when I tried to install some older computer games. So I need a free utility that can handle pallettes and large pcx storyboards. (There is no way in hell I am paying 80$ for PSP!)

The Gimp is a freeware program that can handle PCX and indexed palettes.
If you ever have a chance to use photoshop. buy it. It is the best.

Photoshop is definately the way to go but it isnt cheap by any stretch of the imagination. For free gimp is the best you will find.

Use the trial version of PaintShopPro. I've been using version 7 for years to work on my mod

Where did a scanner come from? Quinzy I have 2 scanners if you need help one flatbed and one film scanner. Of course that would mean you would have to send me the original drawing but then I could also remake the original using the pen tool and save it as a psd for you.

i enjoy drawing oddities that sprout in my head when bored!

Quinzy! Same here! When I used to go to school I had like 7 notebooks for school and one for drawing - I used that one most of the time, and even drew in the rest of them. I even drew stuff on test-papers! Like very little scorpions `n stuff

right, hate to change the subject back to Odin's question, but I would suggest not changing your Gfx program, but instead changing your Flic program. It is easier (for me at least) to use Civ3FlcEdit edit and GIMP.

Varlin the problem he has is he doesnt like the gimp and wants another freeware program............but I cant think of any other freeware other than gimp that has options needed to edit pcx's or flc's.

Use PSP trial like Steph says, I tried using GIMP for C`n`P but it messed up my stuff...

I understand that he doens't kike GIMP. I would agree with him if was using the newset version of GIMP. I use an older version (v1.2.5) and it never freezes or anything. I was actually suggesting him using CIv3FlcEdit instead of FLicster. I just said that I used GIMP.

I know what the problem is, and it has nothing to do with your gfx editor. Check the size of your storyboard, as it is a little too big. The same thing happened to me when i was making my Tie. It probably needs to be a little smaller.

Ups, you went back on topic while I was posting hahaha, don't mind me..lol

I know alot of people that swear by Gimp..........of course I think it has more to do with being free than anything else ;)

I'll try that, Varlin. Maybe Flic Edit will work.
