View Full Version : Total War
King Flevance Dec 24, 2005, 02:53 AM I know this is not about CIV really, excuse the intrusion but I am thinking of getting one of the total war games soon to try out the series finally. Does anyone recommend one besides Rome? (a bit steep atm)
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: :hmm: Why does war games do this weird hyperlink? It wasnt me I swear.
ma(ket Dec 24, 2005, 03:36 AM As a long time tw player i must say - Rome with latest expansion is a realy good game to start.
And CA finally did a good job bugfixing/optimazing it with 1.5/1.6 patches.
You may try also Medieval: Total War, once a great addition to the series, but with VERY outdated graphics as for now.
See ya at tw forums. :)
Bluetooth Dec 24, 2005, 06:54 AM Total War is a game that gets better and better, so go for Rome and I don't think you'll be dissapointed.
DarthBeer Dec 24, 2005, 07:21 AM I agree, Rome is a great game, a steal at twice the price.
I'll have to check out the barbarian expansion when I get burned out on civ.
warpstorm Dec 24, 2005, 07:25 AM I liked Medieval in its time. You can get it for a song now (with the expansion).
azzaman333 Dec 24, 2005, 07:31 AM This should be in the All Other Games (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23) section. If the others are as good as Rome, then they should be worthwhile getting, as i have only played Rome out of the Total Wars
Chieftess Dec 24, 2005, 07:40 AM Moved to Other Games.
Specialist290 Dec 24, 2005, 08:25 AM Ah yes, Medieval Total War. Installed it on my uncle's comp last night and started up a game. (I would have done it earlier, but I forgot I had brought it with me 'cause I stuck it in the wrong pocket of my suitcase.) I think I'm playing as the Danes on Easy. Oddly, the French seem to be doing well; they've conquered most of their modern-day territory (taking all of England's continental possessions in the process) and are now at war with the Holy Roman Empire and Aragon. Meanwhile, I'm trying to build up my own little Baltic empire (but only currently have Livonia; the French conquered Lithuania by crusade, and I'm not touching that place w/ a ten-foot pole--yet).
Specialist290 Dec 24, 2005, 01:07 PM A little update on my current game (sorry for turning this thread into my mini-AAR):
It's AD 1165, and my third king has just died. My "little Baltic empire" is starting to grow up; I took Saxony in a brief war w/ the Holy Roman Empire, securing my Danish homeland against a direct invasion by land, then managed to bribe away Scotland. Afterward, the French and I launched an attack against the English, with them taking England's southern coast and myself capturing Mercia and Northumbria and killing the English king in a siege. The French got excommunicated; I got a warning the same turn, but managed to call a truce right in the nick of time.
The French have eliminated the Aragonese and are still at war w/ the Holy Roman Empire (among others) and have made a few gains (notably Lorraine, Friesland, and Provence), but have lost Lithuania to Novgorod. The Egyptians wiped out the Turks, and the Spanish have unified the entire Iberian Peninsula (aside from Aragon's former holdings, which are now French). The English are down to Wales and Brittany. I'm thinking of joining the big dogpile on the French while they're still excommunicated, since I want to secure the British Isles all to myself and maybe annex a bit more North Sea beachfront property on the Continent, but I'll probably need a few more years to build up my forces. My income is good, thanks in part to my fleet of longboats stretching from the Baltic to the northern coast of Spain, and I've managed to convert most of Livonia from Orthodoxy to Catholicism with my Bishop there, so I don't forsee any major problems on the horizon on the domestic front.
Duelingground Dec 24, 2005, 01:44 PM M:TW is a cool game, and there are several mods you can use which add a lot to the gameplay. I'd wait on purchasing R:TW, you should see a combo deal of the original game and the expansion together before too long.
I'd recommend picking up Shogun first, look for the Warlord edition, which includes the Mongol Invasion expansion. IMO, it's probably the best of the series, at least in terms of atmosphere, and a good starting point.
You can find more info here (http://www.totalwar.org/), and here (http://www.totalwar.com/), as well as lots of strategy tips and some really good mods.

Thanks, I will probably check out M:TW and Shogun (I was hoping Shogun was good, just look at me avatar ;) ) Good advice on the double pack. As it stands I had to pull a couple tricks to afford civ 4. That is the main reason I can't get R:TW. But I can sneak a Jackson to Gamestop I think and get both of these 2. ;)
Also, graphics arent a big issue for me if the gameplay is fun. Unfornatly Civ has let me down this time around. :(
Kan' Sharuminar Dec 26, 2005, 12:29 PM My favourite is still Shogun, which I see in shops for exceptionally cheap prices. I like Medieval least of all, but do enjoy creating a little empire from time to time.
IroquoisPlisken Dec 27, 2005, 09:19 AM Can anyone help?
I got Medieval for Christmas, but it often freezes up when I'm on the main menu (it seems if I either stay on it too long, or go back to it from another menu, it freezes). If I can get into a game, it works fine.
Is there a patch that fixes this? I think it said I have version 1.1.

jeriko one Dec 29, 2005, 02:30 PM I hope they make Medieval Total War again with the Rome Total War system. Reappearrances made me sick. Also Bulgaria wa svery hard to capture because you usually get a bridge in the battle map.
BCLG100 Dec 29, 2005, 03:36 PM I just found my Medieval total war in with a huge crack in it and a huge nick in the side
Drivebymaster Dec 29, 2005, 03:49 PM Ya its Fin awsome....too bad mine wont let me play online games
Maniacal Dec 30, 2005, 01:36 PM I intend to purchase R:TW next year sometime, maybe the summer. And I mgiht pick up Medieval part as well.
Drivebymaster Dec 31, 2005, 10:12 AM Ya. Its defineatly worth the money...because you will use it....ALOT
Maniacal Dec 31, 2005, 09:56 PM I'm hoping for the price to drop a little.
And my B-day in June.
Drivebymaster Dec 31, 2005, 11:32 PM lol that didn't stop me...I played like 2 min of it and I was like THIS is the game I want...plus I had 50 extra bucks hangin around so I went out and bought it...both of them infact
Ulrich.forever Jan 02, 2006, 02:13 PM Yeah, the TW games are like the best games on the face of the earth. I only have a problem with going bankrupt like,20 turns into the game, and then losing because of it, but the battle systems are the best in the world, especially Rome: TW, because of the fire missile weapons, looks cool when you have about 500 archers, all firing fire arrows at the same time.
Go for Rome TW over M:TW, both are good, but R:TW is better.
Drivebymaster Jan 02, 2006, 07:23 PM 500 archers.....my god man....you only need 4 sets of archers, 2 sets of Onagers, a lot of cohort infantry and some spearmen
But the trick is not to go into bankrupcy is to limit the amount of buildings you put up...Emphasize trade! and if you are playing as the Julius family the only way is through military might AND listening to what the senate says
Ulrich.forever Jan 03, 2006, 02:46 PM I am just saying that it looks really cool to have 500 archers pounding the heck out of something, and I stopped going bankrupt a couple weeks ago, but thanks for the advice.
RoboPig Jan 03, 2006, 05:13 PM i have RTW and STW Warlord edition and MTW is on it's way from Amazon.com. RTW and STW are great, i am looking forward to MTW, seems to be the best one
question about MTW: are the king and nobility names real or made up?
IronMan2055 Jan 05, 2006, 08:09 PM i also recomend medieval total war at walmart its like five bucks very good game the graphics in the battles are iffy but the regular screen is excellent

To answer your question: from what I can tell, the names of kings are authentic for the period, but I'm not sure if they necessarily follow each other the same way they did in RL history. I've heard that you can get certain "hero" kings (such as Richard I for the English) and other types of units with special stat boosts (one time I got a 4-star Catholic Bishop named Saxo Grammaticus--oddly enough, I was playing as Hungary at the time).
Dreadnought Jan 07, 2006, 11:58 AM Byzantines rock the face of Europe. Their Infantry, archers, and heavy cavalry kill EVERYTHING.

At the start of the game: yes. But after that: no. For example Turks start with Hasan Sabbah and Suleiman(or Kilijarslasn) in the early period. That is correct.
Also during the game some funny things might happen. For example once when I was playing with the English there was a rebellion in Northumbria. The name of the leader of the rebels was Robin of Loxley. Also I saw a French rebel general called Baron du Lac.

You are right. Unfortunately they lack units which are good against cavalry so when there is a mongol invasion or playing against Turks some problems appear because spearmen have poor morale. Varangian Guards are the best.
fifafan247 Jan 21, 2006, 06:31 PM Is there any trainer besides the money one, and or cheats like Rome's for Medieval?
Drivebymaster Jan 21, 2006, 10:23 PM SHAME ON YOU!!! CHEATING...lol no I dont know any because I have been learning how to play by the rules...then after that I played around with cheating and it took a lot of the fun outa the game

EDIT: :hmm: Why does war games do this weird hyperlink? It wasnt me I swear.I've loved both Shogun and Medieval Total War. I'm not sure how many of Shogun you will find (including it's expansion CD) since the game is much older, about seven years old by now, I think, but you should find Medieval for a decent price.
The Yankee Jan 22, 2006, 05:06 AM There is apparently a fourth Total War game in production, set to come at the end of this year: Medieval 2:Total War
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/medieval2totalwar/index.html?q=total%20war
It looks like it may be a later or longer version of the original Medieval, though not much info is availiable now.

Ok thanks anyway.
The Yankee Jan 22, 2006, 04:58 PM If you really care about the cheat codes that are out there, then look up on Gamespot or any number of other gaming websites for the info.
fifafan247 Jan 22, 2006, 05:00 PM Yeah I was those but I wondered if there where any user-made trainers....oh nevermind.
