View Full Version : SM2 - Russian cosmonauts (RaR)
Smart Dec 30, 2005, 08:02 AM I have played a few games in Rise and Rule mod, and it seems to be very interesting. In this SG we shall pass a way from a small tribe up to great empire, which will try to colonize the Alpha Centauri.

Version: RaR v1.04b (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2687194&postcount=65)
Difficulty: Emperor
Civilization: Russia
Victory conditions: All enabled, but we are aiming for space
Size: Standart
Landmass: Continents, 70% water
Climate: Normal, Temperate, 4 Billion
Barbarians: Random
Opponents: Random
Rules
Our goal is not a fast victory. On the contrary, we should build a big empire, and try all features of the RaR mod. Therefore I will add a few rules:
We cant start a war while we are in Chiefdom goverment.
We can't be in war with more then one civilization in the same time.
Player may capture, raze, or take via peace treaty only one city per turnset.
If AI demands a tribute and we can start a war according to the rules written above, we should refuse.
We must never pay for peace
...Any suggestions?
SG stuff
Four players in roster, 24h for "got it" and 48h for play. If you cannot play, please warn of it in advance.
20 turns per turnset in the first round, then 10 turns in set.

madviking Dec 30, 2005, 08:04 AM I'll move the settler SE one to grab the mountain and the apple
Own Dec 30, 2005, 09:57 AM Oh Smart, I'm terribly sorry, but I can't play RaR SG's because of my idiotic failure to install 1.04b Beta. Perhaps laziness and idiocy combined, because transfering each file by hand (which I still don't know what that means) was giving me carpel tunnel. Will lurk though.
I'd move the settler south to be able to work the apple on turn one, not having to wait for a palace expansion and get the BG's.
Own Dec 30, 2005, 11:11 AM Got it to work! I'll join, but put me at the bottom of the roster, I've got SM1 and Own7 to play right now while trying to install graphics card.
Beorn-eL-Feared Dec 30, 2005, 11:20 AM On a food bonus start, Smart, you can easily crank this up to DG or D. Be not afraid. Full plate here though, so I'll only come to comment randomly from time to time :mischief: Agreed with MV on moving, but 1S seem more efficient to me. Mind posting the 4000BC save ? :)
Smart Dec 30, 2005, 11:43 AM @Own: It is good, that you have installed RaR, I've added you
@Beorn: This game is planned for RaR beginners, and I think emperor is ok . As I said, I want to try most of RaR features, and, for example, on Deity and DG we could build only few Great Wonders... About food bonuce - in rar one citizen eats 3fpt, and AFAIK without that apple capital will not grow to size 3 or higher...
I will play first turnset tonight, and then will post 3000BC save
I'd suggest to move Tribe S too, we need that apple immediatly.
madviking Dec 30, 2005, 01:30 PM But you lose those hills to the North and East
Own Dec 30, 2005, 01:32 PM Actually moving south will get us one more hill than SE would.

madviking Dec 31, 2005, 08:59 AM There are also some problems with the longboat. You have to copy som files and put them in there. This is probably ot for everybody though...

2. Tokugawa demands 22 gold, I cave.
4. Coffee is in.
8. Tribal guards men > clan.
10. Siam demands and gets 22 gold.
Heres a dotmap. What is the order in which we should settle? Any changes? I like wide spacing in RaR because you can go to size 15 before hospitals.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/SM2_DotMap.JPG
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 12:45 PM @Own:
I'd like OCP, to get big metropolises later in the game. Will make dotmap soon.
@Mathias:
What program did you used to plan city placement - New city 1 (planned), New city 2 (planned) etc., on your screen?
Own Jan 02, 2006, 12:48 PM That's civassistII, found in the utility programs forum in C&C. It's awesome.
Mathias Jan 02, 2006, 12:51 PM That's a feature of CivAssist II. As you can probably guess, I'd like to expand to the northeast first.
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 12:54 PM I've already used CA2 for alerts (riots, MM, etc.), but never saw that option. Will try it now :goodjob:
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 01:49 PM This utility is really great . I've made OCP "dotmap" - minimal waste of tiles and minimal city overlap:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/SM2_OCP.JPG
I think, we should build the first uncorrupted ring ASAP, and only then start working on second one.
And one question: how to remove those green lines from the map in CA2?
Beorn-eL-Feared Jan 02, 2006, 02:25 PM Odd lines on the map here and there are sometimes due to your graphic mods, which do not translate perfectly onto CA2. And while I'm here, for both distance corruption and elephants, I'd say swap #1 and #3 in the order - monuments are good enough (and much cheaper than a settler) for getting an easy border expansion, if that was #1's purpose for St-Pet ;)
Mathias Jan 02, 2006, 03:34 PM We need to claim the iron first, then get access to the elephants, before worrying about rings. Also notice that your placement doesn't get the pearls or the seal, both +1 food resources.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a190/DMathias/SM2_dotmap_1750BC.jpg
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 04:05 PM Sure, I dont have watched on the resources, when I build a dotmap. But your city placement is too tightly. OCP means that distance between towns should be 5 tiles, or at least 4.
New dotmap:

General Mayhem Jan 02, 2006, 04:05 PM If you guys want a 4th I just got 1.04b working, so I'd be interested in the 4th slot.
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 04:23 PM Welcome to our team, General Mayhem. I will add you to 4th slot.
So, you is UP now. Look to the picture above, and found the next city on "New City 1" place.
Btw, I said in the first post, that we are playing 20 turns per set in the first round. Since Own have played only 10 turns :crazyeye:, you can choose, how many turns you will play - 10 or 20.

General Mayhem Jan 02, 2006, 05:31 PM Turn Log
Turn 0 (1750 B.C.)
Cut back science to 40% for a turn to get some extra cash from beaker over-run, otherwise everything looks good.
Turn 1 (1725 B.C.)
Dynasticism comes in, start on Code of Laws. Thanks to us getting dynasticism, we now have to build 3 pop pioneers, and with Moscow growing in 17 turns that doesn't work out, so switch to a hardy pioneer which only takes 2 pop and will complete when Moscow finishes growing. St. Petersburg finishes worker, starts worker housing.
Turns 2 - 10 (1700 B.C. to 1500 B.C.)
Nada
Turn 11 (1475 B.C.)
St. Petersburg grows
Turn 12 (1450 B.C.)
Arabia starts the Hanging Gardens.
Turn 13 (1425 B.C.)
Code of Laws comes in, start on Philosophy. We finally have a monopoly tech, so start shopping: Siam is the high bidder, giving us 15 gold, Bronze working, and Mysticism for COL, Arabia then gives us 5 gold, Sailing, and
weaving for COL, then 40 gold and COL goes to Japan for Aristocracy. We end up only being down slavery, and with tea just outside the borders of Moscow.
Turn 14 (1400 B.C.)
Arabia demands and gets 23 gold.
Turn 15 (1375 B.C.)
Nada
Turn 16 (1350 B.C.)
Arabia and Siam now have construction, but won't sell.
Turn 17 (1325 B.C.)
Nada
Turn 18 (1300 B.C.)
Moscow finishes hardy pioneer, starts another.
Turn 19 (1275 B.C.)
All 3 other civs now know mythology, but want 2 arms and a leg for it.
Turn 20 (1250 B.C.)
Nada
Philosophy due in 7, we "should" get it first, I'd take iron working as our freebie, it would give us 2 monopoly techs to play with. I avoided the switch to Monarchy to try to ensure us getting Philosophy, as soon as it comes in we should probably revolt. The hardy pioneer is headed towards new city 1, once he gets founded we will have a good shot at iron if we build a shrine as the first build to get some culture.
The Save (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/SM2_1250_GM.SAV)
General Mayhem Jan 02, 2006, 05:33 PM The world in 1250 B.C.:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/world1250bc.JPG
Own Jan 02, 2006, 05:44 PM Ooh, tea. Lookin good, I'd say go for the tea first then the elephants.
General Mayhem Jan 02, 2006, 05:50 PM I'd disagree there, elephant riders=1 turn roads, need I say more? :p Plus a city 1 NW of the elephants could get us both...
Own Jan 02, 2006, 05:52 PM elephant riders=1 turn roads,
What does this mean?
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 05:57 PM What does this mean?
Maybe that they can build roads and chop forests ;)
Own Jan 02, 2006, 05:58 PM Cool, I didn't know that.
General Mayhem Jan 02, 2006, 05:59 PM Elephant riders are capable of building roads, and on grassland/plains can build them in 1 turn. 2 or 3 of them frees up the worker force for doing city improvements, and I typically don't upgrade them just because they are so useful as road builders even after they go obsolete as fighting units.
Smart Jan 02, 2006, 06:11 PM I think we should build the next city on place 3, to get both Tea and Incense. From philosophy we must take Democracy for free, and then revolt.
Cut back science to 40% for a turn to get some extra cash from beaker over-run
Since Chiefdoom goverment have 50% rate cap, you cant get 60% income (100-40% science). I think, moving research slider down, to get income more then it's allowed by rate cap is exploit, because game will move slider back to 50% after the turn ends, but you will get an extra cash.
Dont use this later
Smart Jan 03, 2006, 10:12 AM Got it....
Smart Jan 03, 2006, 12:49 PM Turn 1
St.P. WH > Wiseman.
Turn 3
Kiev was founded. Workers are connecting Iron, Incense and Elephants.
Turn 5
Arabs have established embassy in Moscow.
Worker builds road to Tea.
Turn 6
Discover the Philosophy, take Democracy for free.
Revolt and got only 2 tuns of anarchy!
Sell Philo to Arabs for Construction and Mythology; to Japan for Slavery and Fermentation; to Siam for worker and 2 gold
Sell Democracy to Arabs for Civil Enginering and 184 gold.
Start researching Riding to get access to Elephant training
Turn 8
Anarchy ends, we are in Democracy now. Science to 80%, Riding in 4 turns.
Switch Moscow from Hardy pioner to the normal one, because cities are growing faster now (3fpt grasslands, instead of 2)
Turn 11
Riding > Elephant training
Buy Polytheism from Japan for Riding
Turn 13
Moscow Pioneer > Worker housing
Turn 14
St.P. Wiseman > Pioneer
Turn 16
Minsk was founded. Start working on Wiseman.
Turn 17

Turn 19

Mathias Jan 20, 2006, 12:59 PM I have played 5 turns. We got another SGL. We can build Summer Palace. (Kiev or Minsk?) Will rush Newton's next turn and trigger GA. I'll try to finish this tonight.
600 AD save attached if you want to check it out.
madviking Jan 20, 2006, 07:06 PM We can buy drama and Siege Warfare from the Japs for 390 jold.
I suggest beeline to Cavalry Tactics to grab Cossaks. build some and try to capture some Jap core cities. Ex...
EDO & KAGOSHIMA- Olive Oil
KYOTO, NAGOYA & TOKYO- Silks
KYOTO- Elephants
OSAKA- Smoke and Ponies
SATSUMA- Iron
Switch St Pete to Training Camp, to build some armies, (NOTE- It says Training Camp exspires with Theory of Warfare, it only stops the Imperial Guard makingness.) With conquer the Continent, we won't get opposition and pretty cruise control from there. (NOTE- the other continent is rather dumb)
Smart Jan 20, 2006, 08:30 PM Switch St Pete to Training Camp, to build some armies
We will rush Newton's University using SGL first. Only then we could switch to TC.
I suggest beeline to Cavalry Tactics to grab Cossaks. build some and try to capture some Jap core cities.
Good idea. But we could capture or raze only one city per turnset - read first post with rules.
@Mathias:
Summer palace cost is only 200 shields, I don't think that it is a good using of SGL. Soulds like we will be in the next era soon, we could rush one of IA wonders

Smart Jan 23, 2006, 07:02 PM OMG! This is 100% SGL, because they had ~100 turns to build it. If we knew, we had to rush it via SGL before... I will check save to find some options
madviking Jan 23, 2006, 07:07 PM Now where could of they got it???? :hmm::confused:
Smart Jan 23, 2006, 07:15 PM I think we must build Training Camp... We will waste 500+ shields, but I don't see anything better - all current wonders are useless and we haven't University for Newton's :(

Whats the prob?
That fixes the Funky Longboats...
Own Jan 27, 2006, 06:22 PM I've found the problem, the longboat and longship files merged together for some reason. I'm currently fixing it.
Smart Jan 27, 2006, 06:32 PM i'VE played in this SG already, remember
You didn't get errors because there weren't any longboats before. You should copy "longboat" folder to folder in the RaR mod as it is described in RaR 1.04b thread
Inconvinience #2:
Go to the Firaxis Inquisitor folder (in your \\Conquest\Art\Units directory), and copy all files in that folder into the new RAR Priest animation folder.
Go to the Firaxis Longship folder (in your \\Conquests\Conquests\Middle Ages\Art\Units directory), and copy all files in that folder into the new RAR Longboat folder.
;)
Own Jan 27, 2006, 06:34 PM I saw that thread, and followed those instructions. I'm taking a break, I accidently deleted some stuff (:crazyeye:) and now I'm taking a break. Will be fixing again soon.

Rush 13 shields in Kiev for 78 gold to complete Wind Mill this turn
WLTK day ended in Sverdlovsk and we came up 1 shield short on aqueduct, so I switched it to a School. Should have built Port and Major Port instead of aqueduct, anyway. Plan on that after the School.
I put lux up to 20% so I could micromanage our cities for the last turn of our GA. If we are going to stay in Democracy, as I expect we will, then we should use lux slider instead of buying luxuries. In that case, we should rush the East India Company, which provides a +50% lux modifier to all cities.
We now have 25 laborers.
Moscow:
45 spt after GA, Smith's will still complete in 5 turns
St Petersburg:
64 shields with growth, 45 next turn for Wind Mill in 2 turns
Kiev:
Wind Mill complete this turn, 30 spt after GA
Minsk:
37 shields with growth, 21 spt after GA, Water Mill in 4 turns with no overrun
Smolensk:
Laborer complete this turn, 10 spt after GA
Odessa:
Laborer complete this turn
Sevastopol:
15 shields this turn, 10 shields next turn for Academy in 2
Tblisi: 16 shields in the box, plus 16 this turn for 32, 10 spt after GA. Could build just about anything - another laborer this turn, rush EIC next turn?
Sverdlovsk:
16 shields this turn, move citizen from coast to second mountain next turn for another 16 to complete the school, then build Port and Major Port (not Aqueduct)
Yakutsk:
Academy complete this turn, 33 spt after GA. I would rush Temple and switch to complete Wind Mill. We need culture here!
Vladivostok:
23 shields this turn, move a citizen from plains to mountain next turn to complete Courthouse
Novgorod:
15 shields this turn, 10 spt after GA for School of Scribes in 3 turns
Krasnoyarsk:
7 shields this turn, 5 spt after GA

That was my intention, I just put it on EIC so it wouln't get overlooked. Did I forget to mention that I was researching toward City Planning? Planting forests and building Parks is a good thing.
For modern research, when we get there, beeline Computers first, then Computer Networking. With a new tech every other turn, the order in which we research them probably doesn't matter.

If you're concerned about our treasury, sell something to the AI. From the 1110 AD save, the Arabs have 3555 gold and 103 gpt available. Siam has 2787 gold and 61 gpt. We have 20 monopoly techs. I think we can find some way to get their 9600+ gold into our treasury.

Mathias Jan 29, 2006, 06:37 PM You're in a bit of a hurry about those resources. By the time we need them, the AI will have them available for trade. Or we could just take them from Japan.
Updated available gold info:
Arabs have 4901 gold and 107 gpt
Siam has 1826 gold and 49 gpt
The others are still broke
Smart Jan 29, 2006, 06:39 PM Sorry about luxes :mischief:. Anyway this :spear: will happen soon :D

I have miscounted food and shields in Smolensk. I thought it could reach +30 fpt for growth every turn and still pump 30 spt for a Laborer every turn. We could still do that with another production modifier on top of the Water Mill. We aren't far from Electronics and Engineers, so even if we did set it up, it wouldn't last long.
Yakutsk is currently building National History Museum, which we don't really need. We can still switch to a Factory without waste.

madviking Feb 04, 2006, 10:25 AM N/m that, thats for the other ones.

madviking Feb 04, 2006, 10:44 AM Don't remember much from Thursday session but the things that happened:
Signed peace with everyone
Launched into Modern Times, Radar free tech, Pesticides, 'lectronics, Advanced Flight, researching Mech Warfare in 3 turns.
Aztecs and Siam have/had decimated Carthage/Japan and Arabs (respectively)
Moscow- Hoover Dam- 11 turns
St Pete- Edison's in 3 turns
Keiv- Spirit of St Louis in 9 turns
Smart Feb 04, 2006, 11:00 AM Signed peace with everyone
Thanks for the ruined reputation :(
Do you think that we have wasted all our gold for upgrading, and have built tanks and artillery to just sign peace and pay 168 gpt for unit support now? We need Uranium for SS Fuel Cells, and Siamese have it.
I must say this again: please don't do anything global without discussion with team.
Mathias Feb 04, 2006, 12:20 PM Rep hit isn't critical. There's nothing for us to buy. We can still sell techs for gpt, as long as the AI have any available.
We should be able to pick up all the necessary modern techs at 3 turns each and launch by 1800.
Smart Feb 04, 2006, 12:47 PM According to CA2, in Social Democracy we will produce 3158 breakers per turn with 154 gpt income
If CA2 calculation is correct, we will be able to research modern age techs with 2 turn rate. I would change scientific project to Fission and take Democratic Socialism and Computers as free techs from Edisson's.
Got it.
Mathias Feb 04, 2006, 02:14 PM Sounds good. I thought about a possible government change, but didn't do any comparisons.
Smart Feb 04, 2006, 05:05 PM I queued 3-4 buildings in each city on pre-flight. Learned Fission and took Democratic Socialism and Miniaturization for free. Revolt, got 4 turns of anarchy.
After revolution I saw that CivAssist calculated economy wrong - it doesn't counted unit support, which is 5gpt per unit... I disbanded some unusefull units like Riflemans and Cossaks, but we are still at negative gpt. Joined few workers to cities. After disbanding and MM I learned Computers in 2 turns and queued research tree to Computer Networking.
We are researching techs every two turns!

madviking Feb 07, 2006, 07:34 PM OK, on turn 9, we poped a SGL from Super Sonic Flight.
Should we use him for SETI or the Engine?
Mathias Feb 07, 2006, 10:42 PM Probably the Engine. We should be able to run 2-turn techs to the end even without SETI. In either case, it can wait one turn.
Smart Feb 08, 2006, 04:20 AM We don't need SETI, just build labs and networks in every city. It will allow to research every tech in 2-turn rate.
madviking Feb 08, 2006, 07:39 PM I use the 28 nukes stored in St Pete to nuke all the Aztecs! Take that you ignorant fools!!!!1 The same for you Carthage! Then I roll the 10 transports full of tanks to capture the Vikings!!!!1oneoneoneelevenonehundredandone

What?
Oh! That game!
------------
OK, the Space program is done! *everybody cheers* The Engine will be done next turn, the Thrusters (9 turns) instead of HappyLand in Yakustk and the Support System (7 turns) in Odessa. The Planatary Party Lounge (:banana:.) will be research next turn. after that only 24 turns o' research until we're done! :D
><><>SAVE<><>< (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/SM2_1600AD.SAV)
Mathias Feb 08, 2006, 07:59 PM Not that it makes a huge difference, but why did you rush the Engine in our most productive city? That's 280 shields wasted that could have been put into a prebuild for another part. It would have been better to rush it in Novgorod after the factory is complete.
Oh, and your trade timing is a little off. I don't want to criticize, though. This game is in the bag.
Smart Feb 09, 2006, 06:48 AM Good game :)
Congratulations, madviking, you will push the red button and launch spacesheep to Alpha Centauri! [party]

SS parts were built: Engine >> Planetary Party Lounge  >> Life Support System >> Docking Bay >> Thrusters.
Japan declared war on turn 5. Then I planted spy and captured Edo at turn 9.
