View Full Version : Problems loading GOTM-02 save file

If you cannot load the starting save file because of an error, then please read the details below:

Have you got the correct patch version?

This game must be played in patch version 1.52 (save file version 102). If you get a error message that looks like this one:

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/fileversion_error.jpg

Then you need to patch your game to version 1.52. To do this, either:

* Start the game, and from the main menu choose "advanced". From the next menu choose "check for updates" to download and install the patch.

OR:

* Download the patch manually from here (ftp://ftp.take2.de/patches/civ4_update_v152.exe), then install it.

Is it a problem with modified assets files?

If you get an error message that looks like this:

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/images/password_error.jpg

The it is due to one of two issues:
1.) You have modified the XML or Python files in your install directory \assets\ subfolder.
2.) You are one of a small number of people who have an as-yet unsolved problem with the way the checks for these assets files are handled.

If you have this problem, then please do the following:
1.) If you have changed any of your XML or python files in the install directories (NOT the Custom Assets directories!), then please reinstall the game & the patch. You may not play the GOTM with modifications to the original XML or Python files.

If that doesn't fix it, then:
2.) Visit this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=151247). There is a small utility there that I would like you to download and run. I am trying to diagnose the assets password problem, and running this utility and posting the results will help. If you have got the .NET 2 framework installed, please use the .NET version. If you have the .Net 1.1 (only) framework installed, please use that one.

3.) After following Step 2. above, please e-mail Alan & myself with the results of the test (If you don't have the .Net framework installed, and that program won't run, just e-mail me anyway). E-mail to gotm@civfanatics.net AND gotm_submit@civfanatics.net mentioning that you can't load the save file, and we'll send you a copy without the password protection.

Does Civ4 not recognise it as a valid save file?

If you get this error, its probably due to internet explorer putting a .TXT subscript on the file name. If this happens, rename it (right-click on the file and choose 'rename'). Delete the .txt bit of the file name. Alternatively, download a zipped version of the starting save file from here (http://gotm.civfanatics.net/civ4games/saves/civ4_gotm_02_open.zip).

Looks like the GOTM-02 doesn't go with the German Community Translation because of the altered xml's. Actually I wouldn't consider it 'cheating' to use a proper translation. Are these checks really unavoidable? Isn't there a way to distinguish between a translation and a tweak?

The best option would be to get Kai /coldfever to hound Firaxis to include the translation project into the next patch ;)

Replies sent.

FYI Emails should get a reasonably quick response while I am online, as my system picks them up every 15 minutes. Posts probably won't help much as I have to refresh the forums manually to see them.

I just have a question I'm trying to reinstall the patch now to fix my problem, but is the modified assests message then supposed to drop you back to the desktop? Seems a bit severe, I mean couldn't one then go and play some other game that isn't password protected instead?

I guess you'd have to ask Firaxis why they did that. Is it a big deal to relaunch Civ4?

It's not too bad, except for having to hold down the shift key during the loading procedure. I've found its just best to hold the shift key so it'll clear the cache.

Happy New Year to everyone !!!
I have made all required recommendation too.
But save not loaded.
Previous game loaded without problems.
I asked myself What's the difference?

My previous installation of the game worked under Windows XP Pro and NTFS.
Current installation works under Windows XP Home and FAT32.
I think that the loading problem may occur from the file system of operating system.
The file length under FAT32 and NTFS differs and it may cause problems when you check control sum.

Could you please send me save file for using under Windows XP Home and FAT32?
My holidays will last until january,10, I stay in countryside using GPRS to contact CFC.
:-)
Thank you.
Yurian.

hey, i just send an email. i believe my problem is system specific.
for example, this is what i see in my XML CIV4GameText_Misc1.xml

line 9364: <Italian>PagGi?/Italian>

maybe this looks fine to other people, but it is "PagGi?/Italian>" on my computer, missing the "<"

i think this can be easily fixed by adding a space between the italian word and the "<" symbol like <Italian>Pagedown </Italian>.

this bug persist since the stock version of the game, but i just delete all <italian> tag in my XMLs, but deleting tag will result in different checksum, not a big deal in previous version, but now we need same file to play gotm.

also i've reinstalled, patched, gotm2 savegame still says i have modified assets.

I think that is just because Notepad, or whatever text editor you use to look at the XML, is unable to display the accented characters in that XML file correctly. You shouldn't edit the files in any way, as the game software is probably able to read them just fine. You either need to install more font sets on your system to display foreign languages, or ignore those effects.
also i've reinstalled, patched, gotm2 savegame still says i have modified assets. That's the real problem that ainwood is trying to track down.

Yes - an extra two - they are the ClimateInfo & HandicapInfo - just duplicates with chinese character names.

Hey, have you guys find out the problems? sending the no-password file should be only temporary solution...

AlanH
Jan 02, 2006, 06:01 AM
UK income tax was first introduced over a century ago as a "temporary" solution ;)

Seriously, this is not a trivial problem, and looks like a bug in Firaxis' implementation. They have been alerted and we are looking for a workround. Watch this space.

Shortly after the "this file is protected" message, I got a crash to the desktop without an error message. Am I correct in assuming that blue marble caused it?

AlanH
Jan 05, 2006, 03:31 AM
I think version 1.52 exits to desktop after the file protected message. If Blue Marble is in your custom assets the protected file shouldn't go there, and it shouldn't have any effect.

I have never had a crash problem or other technical issues with civ4. gotm 1 worked just fine (no BM). 1.52 has been installed since it came out and I've played lots of games. I haven't installed any other changes. I don't know where bm is exactly, but will look around.

Before the CTD, I get a message about the file being loaded is protected, but is not labeled as an "error."

The GOTM 2 save has the No Cheat flag set so it will not load anything in your custom assets. So if Blue Marble is installed there it will be ignored.

The GOTM 2 save has the No Cheat flag set so it will not load anything in your custom assets. So if Blue Marble is installed there it will be ignored.BM says everything is loaded in custom assets. When you say ignored, does that mean it won't run the game or it should ignore BM, launch and run the game without it?

It will automatically run the game without blue marble - loading the default terrain set.

Not in my case. The game crashes to the desktop. First GOTM ran just fine and the game has played as expected from the beginning.

Send me your e-mail address to gotm<at>civfanatics.net, and I'll send you an unpassworded version.

I doubt that its the cause (and I doubt blue marble is the cause), but try the unprotected one anyway.

I've replied to your e-mail: I tried sending you a zipped version instead (sounds like you've somehow got a corrupted save file).

I've sent off the emails. I forgot to mention that I've also reinstalled the game fresh.

@diddl: Send me an email to me at gotm_submit<at>civfanatics.net and I'll send you the unprotected file.

Well, I just fixed my problem with loading the save. Per a suggestion from Dianthus over in the HOF forum, I reinstalled CIV4 to an NTFS partition (was installed on a FAT32 before). Patched to 1.52 and now I can load the original GOTM2 save file. My Documents and Windows are still on FAT32, so it seems that only the main program directory has to be on NTFS file system.

Interesting. I did not realized, but my C: drive is FAT32. Since I have another drive which is NTFS, I will try installing it there to see if it solves my problem. I will edit this post afterward to say if it works or not.

EDIT: Problem solved. No need to send me the unprotected version of the save even if I sent an e-mail to the administrator this afternoon. It was as simple as that. Simply install the program on an NTFS drive. I hope the problem gets solved for those who do only have FAT32 drives before the next GOTM to free the administrators to do something else than sending e-mails.

to the administrators, thanks for the incredibly fast response

AInwood posted the NTFS possible fix here. It seems likely that this can fix the problem. Please let us know if it works for you.

How do I get the version of my .net?

socralynnek

If you mean, how you get to know which version you installed:

Go to the windows directory, there is a folder called Microsoft .Net and then there is a subfolder called framework.
The subfolders in this folder show you, which versions you have installed

e.g. if there's a folder v1.1.4322 then you have Version 1.1

I got a strange problem (email sent yesterday), am I the first one where a later save didn't open with the prompt that I have modified assets (which I don't have), but earlier saves opened?

If you have emailed Ainwood or gotm <at> civfanatics.net you won't get any action, as he's out of town - see his sig.

No, you are not the first. We've seen a couple of instances of this. If you send your save to gotm_submit <at> civfanatics.net I can edit it.
