View Full Version : classical swordsman
Aranor Jan 04, 2006, 07:28 AM Here is a classical greek or roman swordsman. Would love to put a helmet with a big horse hair plume on him, but without a nif editor well you all no

In the last few days I have been feeling alittle nostalgic for some of my old units, and thought I would update some of my old work to current standards. Truthfully I have wanted to do this guy for a while but never got around to it. However today I forced myself to get to him ( that and I want sick of bashing my head against the wall with my Eporite UU:lol:). So three years after I first published this guy, here he is with a sexy new body! In truth he has about as much to do with the original as chalk does with cheese, their only similarity is that they are both based on the swordsman model.

I hope everyone enjoys. Please Comment and rate this guy! I am yet to find a home for him, so maybe some kind modder here can find a nice home for him!:goodjob: If you do use him please remember me in your credits:D
woodelf Jan 04, 2006, 07:34 AM He looks good Aranor. I'd love to be able to do something like adding a helmet or boots, but for now this is all we can do. Nice first skin. :goodjob:
Aranor Jan 04, 2006, 07:39 AM boots are an easy add woodelf. But classical foot soldiers never wore shoes or boots as we know them. The wore sandals and greives on the lower legs as protection. I kindda lied when I said this is my first skin, its my first true skin that I've posted, I have other sworsman units that I have created one that is similar to this with greives on the legs ;)
woodelf Jan 04, 2006, 07:54 AM I'd like to see the one with grieves. I know Kael needs/wants a heavily armored unit for his FfH mod too. I was thinking of piddling with it, but if you've had luck with armor before maybe you could beef up the swordsman in plate or some sort of mail?
Aranor Jan 04, 2006, 07:57 AM I suck when it comes to mail, but I could give plate a go. Depends on what you all want. Whether or not u want a more fantasy game style like nwn or something looking more historical like rome tw
woodelf Jan 04, 2006, 08:13 AM I think anything big, bulky, and bad-ass would suffice. :) And you must be damned good to be able to differentiate fantasy style vs historical. I'm happy making a skin that resembles what I intended. ;)

Hmm I'll see what I can find, maybe something using a praetorian template  anyway pm me with any ideas that you and kael have and Ill try my best to make it for you.:D
flamescreen Jan 05, 2006, 01:53 PM I like the skull skin for the shield. If you could replace armor with hides and made the shield look more wooden, it would be a good barbarian invader too for some scenario.
Aranor Jan 05, 2006, 03:01 PM lol thx flamescreen, bte what I was aiming for with the shield was a hand gasping thunder bolts, the symbol of Zeus;), if I remember my greek mythology right! But skull will work good too :p
flamescreen Jan 06, 2006, 04:42 AM Indeed and now you mention it, it does look like that exactly.
I wonder how come I didn't observe it, in the first place. LOL!
Robo Magic Man Jan 07, 2006, 08:45 PM Could you post a screenshot? Sounds like a good skin

This is a heavier armored unit, it could be used as a heavy classical swordsman or an early medievil foot knight, or even a fantasy swordsman ;)

Rabbit, White Jan 20, 2006, 10:40 PM Great skin Aranor. I also like the heavy armored version, except that the shield seems a bit too bright. Great job! :goodjob:
Xanthra Jan 21, 2006, 11:35 AM These guys rock! thnx
Aranor Jan 22, 2006, 02:46 AM Great skin Aranor. I also like the heavy armored version, except that the shield seems a bit too bright. Great job! :goodjob:
the color of the sheild is intentional.:p I was going for a polished silver look with a inlaid golden pattern :D

Aranor Apr 19, 2008, 11:00 AM OMG!!!!! Thread Necromancy AGAIN!!!!!!:mischief::p Well I guess while your here you should check out the first post with the new update! :D
Wolfshanze Apr 19, 2008, 11:05 AM Call me crazy, but I actually prefer your original work over the 20 April 08 update.
Aranor Apr 19, 2008, 11:17 AM Call me crazy, but I actually prefer your original work over the 20 April 08 update.
Ok your Crazy!:p:lol: You did ask for it!:D:goodjob:
GFO_Anubis Apr 19, 2008, 11:35 AM Looks nice Aranor.. like the spearman in the background to
Aranor Apr 19, 2008, 11:42 AM Thanks! the Spearman is the Fraxis Phalanx/Spearman, depending on what version of Civ you use.
mamba Apr 19, 2008, 11:52 AM Call me crazy, but I actually prefer your original work over the 20 April 08 update.
Well, maybe we are crazy, but I agree ;)
Aranor Apr 19, 2008, 11:54 AM Just curious but why? What makes you prefer the older over the new?
Wolfshanze Apr 19, 2008, 12:08 PM Just curious but why? What makes you prefer the older over the new?
IMHO... the new "swordsman" looks like a rabid gorilla with a sword and cape.
You did ask for it!:D:goodjob:
Aranor Apr 19, 2008, 12:17 PM lol I did. The helmet is supposed to be a lions head. There is historical precedent for this kind of attire (though the soldiers were generally served as Cataphracts). In the Baktrian Kingdom they did not have access to the Hetaroi of Alexanders army like other successor kingdoms, so they created their own. They wore armor made of Iron and Thracian Helmets with a face mask created in the image of a ferocious lion. They were the inspiration for this unit ( pitty I didnt show more of the face:() although the role they are in is strictly Ahistorical as the Baktrian Kataphractoi would never have fought unmounted.
Wolfshanze Apr 19, 2008, 12:22 PM I like a lot of your units Aranor... but I prefered the look of your first swordsman (call me a traditionalist) over the "rabid gorilla" look. You've had some great releases lately... this one just didn't do it for me though. :dunno:
Aranor Apr 19, 2008, 12:32 PM Each to his own. The main reason i did this was to play around in Blender and see what I could do! The head is completely new. As is the Sword fully edited from the Ancient Warlord, and the Shoulder pads are missing from the Swordsman body. Play time I say! For you Traditionalists I am cleaning up the original .dds file to get a better resolution and not so fuzzy armor. Watch this space.:p
