View Full Version : Huge Map of the USA
jam4865 Jan 06, 2006, 11:14 PM My map is of the US (and some Canada and Mexico). It is my first, but I think it turned out pretty good. The terrain and resources are pretty accurate based off of a couple atlases. I didn't save in any starting cities.
Please let me know what you think.:)
I changed the starting location of each civ so that none are in the water and added a couple more (12 total now)
I've made a colonization scenario with this map, but am having problems, see my post below and the attached scenario with it:
Aku Armoton Jan 07, 2006, 12:11 AM Looks good. Downloading now.
TheBladeRoden Jan 07, 2006, 01:05 AM Ooh I smell scenarios!
huntunc Jan 07, 2006, 09:14 AM Thank you, finally someone came up with map I was thinking about building. Maybe now I'll actually work on the scenario I wanted to make. Thanks.
Kazimierz Wielk Jan 07, 2006, 02:06 PM I like the map a lot! I only have a problem with starting locations. Looking in Worldbuilder, I see that at least two of the civs at the begining are starting in the middle of the water.
The game got a little boring as early on, Rome skyrocketed in tech and land and soon there were only three civs with Rome being at an obvious advantage. I think that is because of the lack of other competition. :(
jam4865 Jan 08, 2006, 06:27 PM Thanks for the input. I changed the starting locations and added more civs in usa2.
I am working on a scenario on this map with the major us cities in place and highways connected.
Felzor Jan 10, 2006, 03:36 PM You could also use this amazing map to make a Native American scenario. You know, place several major Native American tribes, such as the Apache, Iroquois, Cherokee, Navajo, Shoshone, Sioux. And you could have other, smaller tribes as non-playable civilizations or barbarian cities. Although I look forward to seeing your modern America map as well, although I'm not quite sure what the premise is at this point.
woodelf Jan 10, 2006, 06:48 PM This is begging for a colonial expansion or Native America scenario as Felzor suggested.
jam4865 Jan 10, 2006, 07:22 PM Okay I've made a conolization scenario with this map, but I am having problems with the AI. Here is what I did: America starts with Washington, NY, and Boston as bare cities. Incan and Aztec with settlers in the south. The other civs start with a Galleon each loaded with a settler and warrior off the coast with the idea that they could land and start a colony, or invade America.
The problem is that they just sail around in their Galleons and never land. Does anyone know of a way to make this work?
Here is the scenario as it is now:
mayonaise Jan 11, 2006, 10:59 PM perhaps if you gave them an explorer on land? they might be having trouble finding land-- as they technically dont know where it is. or just reveal a tile or two for them. just a thought
Wyz_sub10 Jan 17, 2006, 01:03 AM This is begging for a colonial expansion or Native America scenario as Felzor suggested.
Check my sig for my First Peoples of North America Mod. May be of use on a map like this.
GarretSidzaka Jan 17, 2006, 01:31 AM thank you very much! :goodjob:
im gonna check it out when i wake up tomarow
Im planning a modern scenario with the usa, canada, mexico down to panama city.
planning any north america maps????
jam4865 Jan 17, 2006, 01:32 PM North America map sounds like fun. I think I will work on one tonight!
I have been playing on this map and really enjoy it. It feels pretty well balanced. No one is over-powered, except myself ;)
dodgy_007au Jan 17, 2006, 11:08 PM Hi,
what did u use to create such an accurate map...?
all i can manage so far is freehand which looks like a 5 year old's finger painting
GarretSidzaka Jan 18, 2006, 01:43 AM that is so cool, jam! :thanx: thank you for putting together this great map and even planning to make the exact one i need! now if only 2k would release the SDK so i can try to start my scenario ive been thinking about for months.... :aargh:
civaddict098 Jan 18, 2006, 06:21 AM WOW great map man. perfect for making senarios from.
jam4865 Jan 18, 2006, 08:49 AM I used a utility called civ4 editor from a post to make the outline and drew it freehand in that glancing at an atlas. I did the rest with worldbuilder. I used to be somewhat of a map geek when I was younger and like to keep these maps accurate, yet playable.
With the Africa/Europe map I made and the North America map, I used the 'trace' feature in civ4 editor for the landmass outline. You can trace over any jpeg image with it.
I should have a much larger map of all of North America done soon. I was working on it last night and worldbuilder crashed on me after not saving it for an hour or so:mad:
mutax2003 Jan 18, 2006, 05:54 PM Someone should make a civ mod of US in Civil War among 5 to 7 factions, similar to what they have in "Shattered Union".
GarretSidzaka Jan 18, 2006, 06:27 PM hey jam, does that civ4 editor you mentioned have good support for making scenario's too? can you give me a link to it to help me out? thanks :)
jam4865 Jan 18, 2006, 09:49 PM Hey Garret, here is a link for civ4 editor:

It is not something that is good for scenarios, mostly just good for map outlines and rivers. You can zoom out further and 'paint' easier. Worldbuilder is good for scenarios. You can place units, cities, buildings in cites, etc. Also, if you open the worldbuilder save file in notepad, you can edit info such as starting era, team alliances, starting religion, etc.
Hope this helps. I'd like to check out you scenario.
Will get back to the North America map soon. My wife's dad is in the hospital, so no time now.
GarretSidzaka Jan 18, 2006, 11:54 PM thanks bro. looks like i gotta get netframework 2.0 :P
dodgy_007au Jan 19, 2006, 02:11 AM all i found was Mapview version 0.2.3.1072 which lets me view existing maps from Civ4.. how can i grab a BMP image of a land mass like a country on earth, and use that to make a map for Civ4?
pason Jan 19, 2006, 04:37 AM Looks good but, Huge Map of North America would maybe be a better name. Maybe I'm wrong but I didn't knew Canada was one of the United States?
Laucian Jan 19, 2006, 08:10 AM The mountains will give great strategical cover... Cool for war. Nice one, certainly going to play it a few times!
Mister.Donut Jan 20, 2006, 07:39 PM Great map!
However, it seems that Rome has a clear advantage with regard to starting location. And saladin (green) has a clear disadvantage being stuck up in the top right corner boxed in by 2 civs.

Chuck Berry Jan 20, 2006, 08:36 PM This map is great but I really wish it had more of the Carribean - I'd like to try a WWIII type scenario - China invades and has a foothold on the west coast, Cuba's poised to take advantage of America's weakest moment, revolution in Mexico, Hugo Chavez is licking his chops in Venezuela - kind of like that movie "Red Dawn" minus the Russians. Maybe even full fledged civil war in the unoccupied U.S., a total apocalyptic vision of the future!
GarretSidzaka Jan 21, 2006, 05:41 PM thanks jam

i took your advice. this program rocks. although in retrospect, i dont think i [U]needed[U] to install service pack 2 to get the net framework to function
[pissed] DOWN WITH MICROSOFT AND CRAPPY FIREWALLS [pissed]
party_guy87 Feb 04, 2006, 04:24 PM it really is too bad that there is a limited number of playable civs
i can see a 50states senario and it would be sweet along with canada provinces and mexican ones too
daveyjwin Feb 04, 2006, 06:37 PM I think a cool scenario would be like USA Civil war, part Deux. It could have a red state, blue state matchup, and have other factions, such as Canada and Mexico, trying to maintain peace, take a chunk, take sides, whatever. It would be neat...
Andrew_Jay Feb 06, 2006, 05:43 PM I think it would make a great American Civil War (1861-1865) scenario.
XplorR Feb 06, 2006, 09:39 PM I like this map of North America. I only noticed one problem, some of the rivers are flowing the wrong way.
Slavic Sioux May 31, 2006, 03:34 PM How come when I wanted to play as one of the civ's from The first peoples mod it would not let me and is there a way to fix that???
