24 hours to verify you can play your turn, 48 hours to play.
Your choice, up to 20 turns. You can always play less.
This is as lousy of a start as I can thing up for a map. Expect a nasty game. City walls are required!
LayZMan Jan 29, 2002, 07:54 PM Wooo, Japan. One of my favs. I'd like to get in if possible. Considering that it's 3 mil and not 5 mil, iron should be easy to get...SAMURAI!!!
Ohwell Jan 29, 2002, 07:56 PM This could be an interesting one to watch! I shall watch this one as well. I never played Japan... The map looks to me like a good ole war map! Nice mountains and hills... Good luck to you players... I bet this one could get bloody :D
LKendter Jan 29, 2002, 08:02 PM I added LayZMan as #2.
That map was deleted as a false start. However, new map I spot 4 mountains, and 3 hill at 4000 BC.
The new laptop still had "culturely linked locations set" :)
LKendter Jan 29, 2002, 08:28 PM General Leemamoto has decided to stop running from all of the tribes that have been fighting him. It is time for our people to grow. With that in mind ...
4000 BC - Kyoto is formed by a large moutain range. We had better use the little grassland well.
3250 BC - After many years, good news for our people. The Anui tribe joins our cause, and will form a city south of Kyoto in time.
3100 BC - We get $25 from some people called the Ghuzz.
2850 BC - After walking for hundreds of years, the Anui people build a city below Kyoto. The people must be happy with the news, for they expand my palace.
2630 BC - The Hsung-Nu tribe teachs us pottery.
LayZMan - You may as well take your 20
Still have a couple of open spots.
LayZMan Jan 29, 2002, 09:25 PM Man, that was quick, lol. Alright, I'll go.
LayZMan Jan 29, 2002, 10:00 PM Hey LK, you sure your timeline and the file you attached match? Because I just played my 20 turns and 1) I traded The Wheel for Masonry w/ Chinese and 2) We discovered Bronze Working at about turn 14 and were working on Warrior Code when I finished (the Chinese wouldn't give up Iron Working or Warrior Code)
LKendter Jan 29, 2002, 10:06 PM I editted our the timeline after 2630 BC.
This should give you 20 clean turns.
Thiazi Jan 30, 2002, 01:23 AM I've played in a lot of these games lately, so if there are other players who want to play, then they should definately have priority over me but if you need another player to finish out the rotation then I'll join up.
Grey Fox Jan 30, 2002, 01:31 AM I could play this game to, if you don't mind...
LayZMan Jan 30, 2002, 01:54 AM (tried to post this earlier, but server probs. Actually surprise that even hrs afterward, it was the only thing I had copied. Lucky me, no re-typing.)
Ok. As one might expect w/ the game being in its infant stage, it was pretty much a ho-hummer.
Anyways, this is the reign of Rei the Warrior Chief, the chosen one. Although nothing major was accomplished in his reign, he is remembered more so because his name was so easy to remember, which allows the legend to pass through oral tradition.
2390 BC
-Kyoto people seek a settlement
2310 BC
-Kyoto trains warriors
2110 BC
-Rei is presented w/ a gift from local craftsmen. Knowledge of Bronze Working spreads through our small empire.
2070 BC
-Young warriors use new bronze technology for weapons, Kyoto has a spearman
2030 BC
-Osaka warriors have a barrack
1990 BC
-Tokyo is founded
1950 BC
-Rei delivers our prized possession, The Wheel to the Chinese. They taught us how to form bricks w/ Masonry.
Notes
-I probably built Tokyo somewhere where you didn't mean for. It's toward the east instead of south, but another settler is in the works anyhow.
OneInTen Jan 30, 2002, 03:38 AM Of course - NEVER load a autosave!
I assume this is because of the supposed bug it introduces into trading. However, I'm almost certain that not loading an autosave will not help you - I've seen the same trading thing happen in a game I'm 99% sure that I never loaded an autosave, and I've read other people saying the same.
BrianJ Jan 30, 2002, 05:36 AM I've never played Japan either, I'd like to join!

BrianJ Jan 30, 2002, 11:54 PM General Briangowa takes control of the japanese empire.
1830:
Warriors explore the surrounding land.
1790 BC:
Our brave warriors defeat a Barbarian and find a Barb villiage north of Osaka. South of Kyoto we get maps from a small village.
1750 BC:
More exploring.
1725 BC:
We disperse an Uzbek camp.
1700 BC:
Our settler moves into position.
1675 BC:
Edo is founded.Tokyo starts a temple. Barbarians spotted nearby.
1650 BC:
We meet the Indians across a land bridge to the north. Trade Alphabet for Pottery and Masonry, and 5 gold.
1625 BC:
We fight off a barbarian at Tokyo. We complete warrior code and start Writing. Our people add a second story to our palace.
1600 BC:
Zzzz..
1575 BC:
Kyoto starts the Pyramids.
1550 BC:
1525 BC:
Defeats annother barbarian.
(13)1500 BC:
The Light Blue fellows south of us are starting to hem us in. Briangowa orders settlers built.
1475 BC:
Our northern Warrior fights another barbarian. This is raging?? :)
1450 BC:
More exploring. The Chinese and Indians are actually next to a giant inland sea.
1425 BC:
Zzzz..
1400 BC:
We meet the French south of the Chinese. This is beginning to look crowded. We trade Writing for Contact with the Indians. Saves 22 turns of research! :D Joan even throws in 7 gold.
Mao has iron working, but wont trade it! He offered 7 gold for contact with the Indians.. nah..
1375 BC:
The Indians start the Pyramids. A Mongol encampment is dispersed.
1350 BC:
Zzzz
1325 BC:
The French are starting the Pyramids. I switch to Literature to get the GL.
1300 BC:
Starts a settler in Edo (settler factory).
Briangowa wanders off in the frozen north, leaving the empire of Japan leaderless.
Well, I dont know how we are doing in this game. The other civs are going to see us as weak.. we need settlers and military.. lots of it. China has Iron Working. Dont count on them trading it. Our science rate sucks. maybe drop it to get more money? Can't do worse than 40 turns per tech..?
BrianJ Jan 30, 2002, 11:58 PM Note the abundance of silk in the frozen north, diamonds near
Tokyo and Ivory near Kyoto. We need those spots!
Hope I didnt mess us up too much. I'm not sure I put priority
on the right areas. We will see.
LKendter Jan 31, 2002, 12:24 AM Next city site - Near all of the Ivory. That could become a hugh source of wealth. Hmmm... Other settler location???
CANCEL one of the settlers, and make it spearman.

11: 1025 Founded Nara, close to China.

I moved two spearmen and a worker to interfere a Chinese warrior/settler to build a city on a future japanese spot...

in a non-militaristic way...
Thiazi Jan 31, 2002, 09:46 PM I'll try to play my turns tonight but more likely, I'll have them done tomorrow afternoon.
Thiazi Feb 01, 2002, 03:18 PM 800 BC: Trade world map to India for contact with the Persians, philosophy, iron working, mysticism, territory map and 5 gold. China demands our territory map and 7 gold and since we have several undefended cities, I agree.
775: Purchase contact with Rome from persia for territory map and 10 gold. Sell world map to Rime for map making, territory map and 11 gold. Purchase horseback riding from France for 30 gold.
750:
730: The research of literature is complete and we start on polytheism. We just didn't seem strong enough to start a second wonder, so right now we are only building the Pyramids, which seem like they will be very important in this game.
690: The city Oolong, named after the Japanese rabbit that balances pancakes on his head, is founded.
670: Swap territory maps with India.
650:
630:
610: The road to ivory is complete.
590:
570:
550:
530: Purchase code of law from Persia for 55 gold. Temple rushed in Kagoshirma. Give France a gift of 1 gold.
510: A colony is created to secure a source of furs in China. We should probably build a city to insure that we will not have to trade for furs at any point in this game.
490:
470:
450:
430: Purchase mathematics from France for 58 gold.
410:
390:
My reign was uneventful but we met two new civilizations and gained 8 new technologies, were we just not researching for long periods of time or did we research a pointless tech like bronze working? Anyway, the next leader should build a road to the iron source north of Kyoto, build a city to secure horse by India and continue pumping out spearmen. We could be an attractive target for some of our neighbors, so it is time to start scaring them off.
LKendter Feb 01, 2002, 08:16 PM General Leemamotoson takes over the Empire.
Preturn - What a mess - GACK!
Oolong switches to temple. We need to culture squeeze Hangchow. Our military sucks, and it is mostly regular spearman
310 BC - ARGGGG. We don't get the Pyramids. Delhi will have to be ours one day.
250 BC - Whip a barracks out in Nara.
190 BC - Nagoya is founded. A lousy location, but we have to protect the furs. Nara really starting to hate us, as we whip out a settler. Oh well ... Our position sucks, we need help NOW.
170 BC - Persia has an attitude - I give into his demands. We just are NOT in a position for a war. We are in deep you know what - Persia has iron. Our only good news - Persia and Rome are neighbors.
150 BC - I answer Persia demand by pillage a road of his - outside of his borders :flamedevi:
130 BC - God are we screwed. France completes the Great Library. We have missed both of the good early wonders.
110 BC - Russia builds the Colossus.
70 BC - Izumo is founded. We at least have 1 source of silks.
10 AD - Nagasaki is formed. This town is high culture flip risk. Rush the temple ASAP!
Summary - We need a road to Nagasaki to connect the horses. Spearman on goto to Izumo. The settler is to grab the large block of silks. Our big key may be lots of luxuries. Science at 10% because nothing else helps. Connect the road to Izumo and silks, getting Iron along the way.
Oh - Screw Persia keep pillaging roads outside of his borders.
Edit - deleted attachments to save space.
LayZMan Feb 01, 2002, 10:17 PM Alright, I'll give this sucker a go.
LayZMan Feb 02, 2002, 12:59 PM No story this go. Overall another ho-hummer, but w/ a bummer. We lost Nagaski to the bedamned "Injuns." Anyhow, here's the major events.
30 AD
Bought Construction from China for 150 gold.
Indians beat us to the silks. Since China's UU is powerful and comes at the same time as our Samurai, stay on good terms w/ them and maybe ally w/ them to mop up the Indians.
50 AD
Kyoto's Great Lighthouse is complete.
90 AD
Cracked the whip in Nagoya to speed up a temple
230 AD
Galley sinks barbs
260 AD
Osaka complete a temple
270 AD
Kyoto has an aqueduct
290 AD
Oolong barrack built
310 AD
As feared Nagasaki is lost to the Indians.
330 AD
Road to Kagoshima's iron is complete.
Notes-Spent most of my turns pumping spearmen for defense (w/ just one per city, given time we would have been picked on). Now almost all cities have 2 spearmen a piece (in despotism, 2 garrisoned soldiers produce smiles). The warrior around Persia is still hacking up roads, but the Persians got smart and built their roads inside their empire. Iron is connected, so you can pump swordsmen and go to war or wait for the samurai, whatever.
BrianJ Feb 02, 2002, 06:03 PM I'll play tonight.
BrianJ Feb 02, 2002, 11:50 PM Preturn:

340:
350:
We discover Republic, research Currency.
Revolution!
360:
Republic of Japan founded under Shogun Briangowa
370:
Our galley finds an island north of India, already settled by India.
380:
Exploring.
390:
Zzzz
400:
Zzzz
410:
Our galley follows a shallow sea path to another continent! Coastline is sighted in the distance.
420:
The shore of the new world proves to be icy and hilly. A strange people are sighted in the distance wearing brown outfits.
430:
The people we meet are Russians. Their queen, Catherine shows our sailors great hospitality. Russia is a large empire (15 cities to our 10) but poor. Little gold is available for trade from the Russian coffers. They speak of Germans, another nation we have yet to meet. It seems, from Catherines world map, that the Germans are a nation equal or greater in size to the Russians!
440:
Uneventful
450:
The Germans are as poor as the Russians. Both the Russians and Germans seem to be equal in technology with us. Neither can trade across seas. The Germans have Currency, but our scientists are very close to a breakthrough on that technology anyway.
We choose not to trade contacts for Currency.
460:
As predicted, our sooth-sayers bring us the wonders of Currency. They begin development of a system of indentured servants, tied to the lands of their lords. Some say, with these powers of taxation shared by noble lords, instead of held by the crown, the Shogun will grow strong military, and provide us with new tools with which to fight our enemies.
470:
Zzz
480:

490:
(16) The French ask to trade world maps. We decline until we can get a good price.
500:
Zzz
510:
Our exploring Galley holds on by the skin of its teeth after several Barbarian attacks, and makes Veteran!
520:
Another attack by a Barbarian galley on our galley.
530:
We trade contact with the Germans, Ivory and Gems to the Persians for Monotheism, World Map and 12 gold (their entire treasury) I figured getting a tech for contact was worth it!
Contact with the Germans to Chinese for 2 gold per turn and 20 gold. Interesting, the French already have contact with Germany now.. that autosave bug? Or is it if 2 nations get something they all get it? I didn't trade Contact with Russians away yet.. noone has anything worth trading!
Germans have contact with everyone now.. interesting...
540:
The Japanese people so admire Briangowa that they add to his Palace in Kyoto!
BrianJ Feb 02, 2002, 11:58 PM Not much expanding going on this turn. I built a few Swordsmen.
You'll find them fortified here and there..
Pretty quiet. You could wait until another civ has tech we need before trading contact with Russians, although the Ai will probably have done that already anyway.

Thiazi Feb 06, 2002, 01:28 PM (Now Playing)
Thiazi Feb 06, 2002, 02:37 PM 540: Buy monarchy from Fracne for 150 gold. I could have gotten it for our world map and contact with the Russians but for some reason, I thought I could hold off on that. Unfortunately, the Chinese sold contact with Russians to them, so that was needless to say a lapse of judgement on my part.
550:
560: The construction of the Hanging Gardens begins in Kyoto.
570: Sell world map to France for 20 gold and 2 gold per turn. Buy Chinese worker for 27 gold. Sell world map to China for 30 gold and 3 gold per turn. Sell territory map to Rome for their world map. Buy horses from Russia for our world map and 120 gold. A new island is spotted; it contains a goody hut and an iron source, a future leader may wish to establish a settlement there.
580: Rush libraries in Osaka and Oolong for 96 and 64 gold repsectively.
590: Buy feudalism from Germany for 200 gold and a territory map. I would have given them our world map but I wasn't didn't want to pimp the location of the new island.

670: Our galley sank.
680: Upgrade 1 spearmen in each town to pikemen.
690: Nagoya, a.k.a. fur colony deposes.
700: Raise luxury rate to 10% in a modest effort to prevent further losses.
710: Upgrade remaining spearmen to pikemen.
720:
730:
During my reign, much of our production was put towards building a strong millitary. We still may not be as large as some of neighbors but I favor quality over quanity anyhow. We have already had one city depose to China and I fear with its proximity to some of our major towns, we could stand to lose any more. I delayed an attack during my reign because I felt it would not be a wise move to thrust the next leader into the middle of a war. Anyway, we can take out Beijing and Shanghai easily and if we distribute our forces well, we can probably take a few more cities at the same time. I would look into getting the French involved, since their captured cities would be good targets to defect to us and if China is at war with three civilizations, then they are likely to fold. We also have some excess resources that we will need to trade, make sure that at least one resource goes to Russia. They are currently our cheapest provider technology and horses and we cannot afford to be on their bad side. Also, we should be able to nab at least spices and a world map for one luxury. Anyway, the next leader, should take maybe one or two turns to ready troops and from then on out, it should be a full on war with China. China is on the verge of becoming a world power and if can take them out now, then we will save ourselves a major headache in the future. Also, it wouldn't hurt to gain a few more cites.
LKendter Feb 06, 2002, 10:43 PM The honorable Leemamoto takes over the Empire.
Preturn -
Cancel the worker mining Iron 3 spaces from Kyoto. Cancel both workers by Kagoshima. The town is in ZERO growth mode, why improve it? I micro-manage Kyoto and save several turns for the Gardens. Micro-manage Izumo, we mined the hill, but failed to use it. The prices are pathetic, but I sell gems and ivory for pocket change and 5gpt
I established embassies with the world, and Moscow completed the Gardens 2 turns sooner - GACK! Wasted entertainer in Kyoto probably cost us the wonder.
Lots of troops movement.
740 AD - What the, Lyons completes the Hanging Gardens :( Everyone cascades to Sun Tzu, so Kyoto builds a very expensive cathedral.
750 AD - Our economy is weak, so Kyoto begins a market place. Sell our world map everywhere, and put a few dollars back into the treasury.
760 AD - I am sick of China crossing our borders, so WAR! Hangchow falls - I give one of the new Ivory to Russia for Spice & $2gpt. Capture 4 workers as we head toward Beijing. Kill 1 spearman in Shanghai, it is being stubborn. I am allied with India, but I am not sure how much it helps us. Chinesse counter attack by Beijing cost us 2 horseman.
770 AD - Our supply of horses is gone. Nanking falls, costing us a swordsman. Punjab quits India, and joins OUR cause - more luxuries for us, eventually.
780 AD - Our troops need to heal.
790 AD - Nagoya falls, but it cost us 2 priceless horseman. However, we gain Furs back :) The palace expands.
800 AD - Troops begin marching toward Xinjian. Chivarly is temping for the next science choice, but I choose Education. Reason - If I have EVER seen a civ needing Smith's, we are it!
810 AD - Xinjian falls, and with it I believe we have captured China's only Iron source
820 AD - Kill a Chinesse spearman / settler. 2 more workers, we need all we can get.
830 AD - We capture Shanghai, and a supply of horses.
840 AD - Russia will sell us Chivalry for World Map and $155 :) :) :) Can you say Samurai? Persia finally
willing to be our excess Ivory. We are short one cash, but I buy a French worker to $25. Our infastructure sucks, and every little bit helps.
850 AD - Troops moving toward the next cities.
860 AD - Same as 850 AD.
870 AD - Canton falls, and we gain and bonus of 1 worker / 1 catapult. :flamedevi: I love these deals, I sell India silks from the town that defected to us, and he gives us a respectable 7gpt :flamedevi: France offer us $6gpt for silks. Science is upped to 30% The palace is starting to look nice.
880 AD - Tsingtao is ours. Hopefully, this will help US get most of China.
890 AD - The tough nut cracks, and Bejing finally falls. Alliance with Rome vs. China. I hope Rome can get rid of the nuisance city near him, giving up Theology is worth it to see 100% dead China. A sure fire way to stop flips. We sell Russia and France some newly aquired Gems. Science is now 40%
900 AD - Chengdu falls, units promote to elite, and 3 more workers. But still no Great Leader :( However, we add wines to our luxury list. We now have our OWN sources for 5 luxuries.
910 AD - Well, I guess we can't have it all. India get Tatung - of course, we had an ELITE unit ready to attack
920 AD - Our first Samurai attacks Tientsin, Golden age. A couple of horseman later, and we own it.
930 AD - Macao is captured, and we get dyes!
Summary -
1 - Japan is coming out of the hole. The key is you must keeping the luxury deals going, and look to sell more.
2 - Keep the forbidden palace going in Beijing, we need the production boast.
3 - Kill the last Chinesse cities, we don't want to get stuck with city flips. Way to much valuable luxuries gain from China. Of course, if you get a Great Leader ..., a little further from our capital would be nice.
4 - Take advantage of the Golden age - Run to banking / economics and get Smith's With all of the luxuries we have, market places will be very valuable for happiness. Beside, we NEED the permanent income boast.
5 - Once China is dead, take a breather and build infastructure.
Man, the downtown with the forum is getting annoying

LayZMan Feb 07, 2002, 08:58 AM Alright, got 2 succession games to play. ...had to go to war w/ China in the Mid Ages, I hope they don't have iron or horses.
LayZMan Feb 07, 2002, 10:10 AM Only played 10 turns (tired). Anyhow, never liked Republic and this game give an example why, war weariness is kicking in, lol. What I'm really afraid of is that if the French have saltpeter, they may up and want to have a war. They got a knight roaming the southwestern border (there are two samurai down there fortified in cities. Anyhow, despite the 10 turns, the Romans STILL didn't sack Kaifeng!! (I'll let the next guy decide whether to leave it to the storming Indians or sign Right of Passage to take it ourselves (Indian war elephants are near the Roman border...we go to war because the Chinese cross our lawn, but the Indians are crossing it w/ units to worry about. Also, what happened to the city defense? We need to build a defense, if nothing else we can ue unit strength to make demands :D .
The Timeline

950 AD

-Nara market
-Anyang seized
980 AD
-Russians cut off spices (probably for their war effort vs. Germany)
990 AD
-Engineering discovered (Went after if since it was 4 turns and w/ all the rivers speeds up workers and military
1000 AD
-War Weariness kicking up in cities w/o markets
1010 AD
-Satsuma market
1020 AD
1030 AD
-Tokyo Aqueduct
-Added Pillars to Palace
Notes
-I understand how Smith's Station is important, but I think we should discover gunpower first, so we know who to worry about around us. Since I guess I'm the only one who prefers to build military and dislikes Republic, probably a good idea to stuff border cities w/ samurai in case of invasion. This is why we need to know there the saltpeter is, for calvary and to defend vs. calvary.

As for the China war, the border crossing was just an excuse. I could have just as easily said they looked at me funny.:crazyeyes
I figured China was weakened from fighting with India, and I knew that attack was thin. Several pikeman were defending stacks and barely survived Chinesse swordsman.
As for defensive troops, I AGREE! Thats why when the China war ends, I want peace for a while. We need time to increase our defenses.
Good thing with China, we have lots of luxuries now

Why build workers in Anyang and Chinan when they are in extreme danger of flipping to Rome or France?? Especially with half our armies in those cities! Switched to Temples. Rushed temples in Canton and Chengdu.
1050 AD:
Our palace is expanded by foolish peasants, enamoured by Briangowa's brilliance.
1060 AD:
Briangowa sits back and watches the peasants till fields and dig roads.
1070 AD:
The Sistine Chapel completes in Edo! Everyone and their dog is now building Leonardos Workshop. We may miss it!
1080 AD:
Rampaging indian forces have destroyed the Chinese! The war is over! Indian troops are now seen marching back to India. The Acting guild screams as Briangowa lays off many entertainers and puts them to work in the fields!
1090 AD:
We Love the Shogun Day is celebrated in several cities. The Peasants expand the Palace again.
1100 AD:
Bad news! The Indians complete Leonardos Workshop in Delhi!
Kyoto builds an expensive University. (40 shields wasted)
1110 AD:
Worker movement. Briangowa starts on a massive Granary building spree. Not sure why no cities have them
1120 AD:
Gunpowder is discovered! Starts on Banking. Lucky us, we have Saltpeter. In fact we seem to have a monopoly on it! At least on our continent. 1 source near Edo and one near Chinan. I rush a temple in Chinan to stave off flips! (Aww no Musketment for the Frenchies.. No cavalry for anyone.. awww) :D :flamedevi
Correction, Germany and Russia have one source each, we have 3.. Another near Nanking, on the French border. Briangowa orders muskets for 2 pikemen in border cities.
1130 AD:
Our Golden Age ends :(
The French are building Copernicus's Observatory. Whatever that is. Japanese advisors shrug in puzzlement.
1140 AD:
Zzzz
1150 AD:
Not much happens, Briangowa falls asleep from boredom. Dreams of marching through India, taking Delhi with their Pyramids and Leo's Workshop.
:flamedevi
Well, after the Golden Age, our economy sucks.. need to improve it.. Doing ok Militarily. We should protect our sources of Saltpeter. Other civs will grow jealous.. :)
LKendter Feb 07, 2002, 11:08 PM Well now that the war is over. [dance]
It is time for infastructe with some more military.
Target is smiths, with a boatload of market places.
After that, we will have a decent economy.:)
Thiazi Feb 08, 2002, 01:53 PM (Now Playing)
Thiazi Feb 08, 2002, 03:00 PM 1150:
1160: The people have added a new wing to the palace!
1170:
1180: Russia asks for an alliance against Germany but we decline and give them our territory map as a sign of respect.
1190: India offers to swap territory maps and for some reason I decided to just give them ours.
1200:
1210: We lower the science rate to 20% for one turn. This nets us the "large" sum of 53 gold.
1220:
1230: The science rate is raised back up to 40 gold.
1240:
1250:
1255: The people have added a second level to the western wing of the palace.
1260: We trade iron to India for music theory, world map, 5 gold and 6 gold per turn. We purchase a Persian worker for 25 gold.
1265:
1270:
1275: The Romans attack an undefended Shanghai, I am still not sure why I didn't have a troop there, and burn the city to the ground. I am still not sure why the Romans attacked us but our troops have rallied under the battlecry of "Remember Shanghai."
1280: We give France our wolrd map and 125 gold to aid us in the war against the southern aggressors. Since we were one turn away from completing the research on economics we trade banking to the French for their 150 gold, 22 gold per turn and their world map. We also trade banking to the Indians for the lesser sum of 20 gold and 8 gold per turn. We lower the science rate to 20% for one turn. The research of economics is now complete and we now focus our attention on chemistry. The science rate is raised back to 40%.
1285: Smith's Trading Company is started in Edo, it will take 34 turns.
1290:
1295: Purchase a French worker for 25 gold. Trade music theory to Germany for 3 gold, 11 gold per turn and their world map. Trade silks to Russia for 40 gold, 7 gold per turn and their world map. I then raise our science rate to 50%, which saves us 2 turns on chemistry. I guess it was not recorded already but the war between Russia and Germany is over.
My turns started off really well, I was producing a fair amount of defensive units, building lots of market places, banks and infrastructure improvements. Then the bastard Romans raze Shanghai. I really did not want a war, nor was I even treating Rome poorly but they saw a brief :):):):):) in the armor and they hit us hard. Luckily, we have much better defense everywhere else but I still don't know why or how I moved our defender from Shanghai. I decided it was a good idea to bring the French in, so that we can keep the majority of the war off of our solid but the next leader will need to start pumping out an attack force. I didn't do much on improving our offense and like I said before most of attention was working on economic, cultural and defensive improvements. I am really starting to hate these unprovoked wars and I would like for us, barring a wonder or strategic resource to raze every Roman city. We also need to produce a settler to reclaim the spot that was once occupied by Shanghai. I've never liked the Romans and needless to say, this hasn't improved their image.
BrianJ Feb 08, 2002, 06:35 PM Roman blood will run red for this outrage!
I checked my last save, and Shanghai didnt have a defender at the beginning of your turn... Possibly through most of my turn. I think I meant to move a musket there but didnt communicate that.. sorry..
Will India join in the war too?
My question is, how did Rome get troops up there in the first place??
Good luck with the war! Teach those Romans a lesson! :spank:
Thiazi Feb 08, 2002, 07:29 PM I haven't checked with India but we can probably drag them and Pesia into the war. I had only negotiated with France becasue I wanted to ensure that we had a buffer state between us and the Romans. The Romans had more or less been walking on our land, which I shouldn't have allowed but normally it is not enough of a problem for me to complain to them about. In this instance I should have but didn't.
LKendter Feb 09, 2002, 06:50 AM Uhh.....
I won't post until much later today, but we are at WAR :shotgun:with India. This started as soon as I hit enter to the end of turn.
BrianJ Feb 09, 2002, 09:03 AM War with India.. should be interesting. Good thing France joined with us!
Sounds like the Romans beat us to the punch with an alliance with India..
:spank: :ak47:
LKendter Feb 09, 2002, 01:25 PM Preturn -
The General Leemamoto takes over the Empire.
The first confusion, why in the world is Avigon wasting time on a granary? It is STUCK at 2. Guys, still wasting time developing this town! I cancel another totally worthless granary, and stop wasting our working time in useless forest clearing.
Micro-managment gets Smiths due time down to 23 turns. Find a worker sleeping in Nanking. Wake him up! I see our goals with Rome, Veii - with all of it dyes. Wake up some units, and take Pompeii - 4 free workers our gained.
Start a settler to reclaim our horse source. I would like to see calvary some day.
Review all of our trades
Price for gems to Russia from 2gpt to 7 gpt
Price for ivory to Russa from 2gpt to 6gpt
Nothing more to get from Persia
Most of the civs are broke. The goods news - almost everyone wants our saltpeter.
WTH - Indian declares war on us :( These turns will be a real challenge!
Summary -
1300 - Not much action, thank god. However, our economy is screwed, as India was our main trading partner. Ouch, I missed the same granary stupidity in Izumo. Big whoop, sell it for $7.
1305 - A hugh fight by Anyang. India and Japan both lose a lot of units, but I think Japan came ahead in the fight. However, India does kill the lone horseman in Anyang :(
1310 - Our Samuri SUCK! Two can't kill a lone War Elephant. Nagaski is formed, so we have horses again. Our elite Samura recaputres Anyang. Wierd, for a second I thought I saw a great leader. In despreation for cash, sell Germany banking for $30 and $15gpt. Enough money for an emergency upgrade to Musketman in Tsingato. I abandon the courthouse in Kagoshima for a Samurai. We critically need more troops. The Inidians are running out of troops by Anyang. Tsingato throws away some shields for an emergency set of walls.
1315 - Thankfully a non-event, just killed a couple of Indian troops :)
1320 - Continue to scrounge for money. Sell Music Theory to Russia for $65 & $6/t.
1325 - Finally, no Indian troops by Anyang. Trade 1 samuria for 2 war elephants. Continue to burn up cash, and rush a musketman. I want to solidfy our southern cities.
1330 - The total action consists of killing 1 War Elephant, and a Roman spearman. In a very tough decision, I shoot for Metalurgy next. I really want navigation so that we can trade overseas.
1335 - Wierd, the Indian War Elephants are retreating? Sell banking to Russia, I still have units to upgrade!
1360 Kill 1 defender in Tatung. Not much, but starting to get offensive versus India :)
1365 - A victory versus India, as Tatung is OURS again. War Elephants versus Samurai continue to cost us units. Germany builds a harbor that we can get to [dance]. I first trade techs giving them chemistry for astronmy and $14. Silks for $12 gpt. Lousy deal, but wines and gems for incense. We need help with war weariness. It pays - between turns gives us some love the Shogun days.
1370 - All dead units are Indian / Roman. Start an assualt on Dacca - Junk city, but I prefer it to be our junk city.
1375 Dacca is ours :)
1380 France is making progress versus Rome, so I give them Chemistry to fight India. The last thing we need is them turning on us. Sell dyes to Persia for 6 gpt. Our glorious swordmans defends and kills a war elephant. Begin research on military tradition.
1385 Troops begin to march toward Lahore.
1390 Once again, all dead units are Indian.
1395 Lahore falls, but it costs us elite Samurai dying to a spearman???
Cumae falls, after the temple is completed Iron and horses.
1400 Our biggest edge continue to be barracks. Another we dead, and we again have 1 hp left.
1410 What I was waiting for, we get the trading company [dance] Another roman spearman from hell kills an elite Samurai. A elite horseman has revenge, but almost dies (1 hp left). Ravena is destroyed.
1415 Karachi falls :)
1420 I must thank India for the free workers Dont try to move a settler past a city we own!
LaZyman have fun these are more critical turns. I have never found it so hard to pass the torch  I hope just a couple of turns to dead Rome.
Summary continue the wars. I we can cripple India, and take out Rome our position will be very strong.
ABOVE ALL destroy the last Roman city, that will cut war weariness big time.
1 Avigon and Izumo are junk gives, build 100% military we need it.
2 Rome so far is ignoring us, so continue to swing through the cities Cumae first, as I want the iron and horses. Save rome for last.
3 My game plan in the ice zone is Indus, Pune, Shantung.
4 If you feel the need for peace with India, instist on Bengal and Ganges for the peace treaty. Save us the trouble of taking over that island.
5 Conect our Roman conquests to our road network!
6 Skip the option techs, we want rails asap, then industy asap.

LayZMan Feb 09, 2002, 09:53 PM To sum up this turn in a statement: The Indians are almost dead  . W/ calvary and the fact the Indians have no resources, they're screwed. They don't have the time for their precious war elephant anymore. Anyhow, here's the lowdown.

1515 AD
-Germans complete Magellan's Voyage
Notes
-There is a musketman in the tundra north on the move, he's meant for one of the cities w/ a samurai
-Bombay is already set up to be sacked
-The French army is one to be concerned w/. Until we build our defense, perhaps 2 units per city, I wouldn't suggest POing the French, unless we race for tanks and take them then.
-You can return to Republic if you like, but I wouldn't suggest it seeing as we're at war.
-India is as good as dead w/o resources, clean house before they get Nationalism
-Build defensive units.

Thiazi (on deck)
I have *NOT* looked at the games, but some thoughts -
1 - Do we have a ship to take those 2 junk cities on the island? If not, rush one quickly.
2 - The second the war is done with India, back to republic. We will fall behind big time in tech if we stay monarchy.
3 - LayZman :goodjob: I could tell India was getting weak at the end of my turn, since I finally was on the offensive and took several cities. However, I didn't think he would collapes that fast!
4 - We need to start back on infastructure soon. 40+ turns on mostly military hurt that area.
5 - Did we have any build granaries? If so, we want to sell them!
BrianJ Feb 10, 2002, 06:48 AM I'll try to finish this morning..
BrianJ Feb 10, 2002, 07:35 AM We just took Calcutta and Bombay. We got a great leader.
Any votes on what to do with him?
India has only islands left. another city on a small ismand south of Germany..
LKendter Feb 10, 2002, 08:25 AM Brian J - Glad to hear more of India is gone :D
At this point, I think get the leader safely to the capital. Fortify him. The war is almost over, and armies are a pain to send accross the sea. I don't know of a critical wonder right now. His use will show up soon enough
I don't want cities flipping to India - build ships and get rid of those last cities. We need to get out of monarcy, or we will lose the tech race.
BrianJ Feb 10, 2002, 08:58 AM Preturn:
India has a city on a small island south of Germany too, so not likely that we will be able to take them out any time soon.
The French army is scary. The German potentially scarier. They are huge. (Mind you, so are we) :D
Problem is, Germany's city sites are better than ours.. If we wait until we have tanks to take out the French, the Germans will easily have Panzers..
What's our goal for winning this one? Domination may be possible, but we would be facing a modern war against Germany eventually. They may take out Russia.. It will look like that 1st Reich game where they were clobbering Egypt one city at a time..
Briangowa IV takes the Throne of the Rising Sun. He looks over his empire, sees many useless Granaries and a newly-captured Pyramids. He thinks, better to secure Pyramids before selling Granaries for a whopping 7 gold each.
An evil plot forms in Briangowas mind. Peace with india in exchange for Pune (The useless city south of Germany) then give Pune to Germany to improve relations) But not until India is off the mainland.
1520:
The enlightened historian St Augustine lists Japan as the Happiest nation in his Great History of the World.
Bombay falls to our cavalry, GL Tojo appears!
Calcutta falls to us!
We capture another settler!
1525:
French armies head home through our lightly defended homeland.. France now has a city beside Pune.. maybe we don't have to worry about that one.
Avignon build a Harbour, growing again.
1530:
All is quiet. An Indian Galley is spotted off the coast of Calcutta. (ooo I'm scared)
1535:
We discover Magnetism, Start Theory of Gravity. The Great Lighthouse is obsolete.
The French are heading towards their city of Dijon where a Caravel has been waiting, to ferry their troops (All 22 of them?) to the Indian Islands.. I think we'll beat them :D (silly AI)
1540:
All quiet as the French and Japanese 'race' towards the remaining cities.
1545:
Tojo is hiding in Osaka until we decide what to do with him.
Briangowa is startled to see a metal x in French lands. What could this mean? He calls up Joan to ask her. She doesnt let on what it is, but offers 11 gold for our dyes.. (Having just secured a source in the north, silly AI) France doesnt have Magnetism yet, how could they have rails?
1550:
Trade dyes to Germany for 10gpt
1555:
Our people want to build Wall Street.
We get around to selling useless Granaries.
1560:
Tojo builds Wall Street in Osaka.
India and the back-stabbing French have signed a peace treaty!
Madras flips to the Indians!
We take back Madras easily.
1565:
French knights are massing on our borders near Nanking.
We discover ToG and research Nationalism. I have a feeling we'll need it.
We enter a new era and our palace expands.
I played as much as I could. The wife wants to go out now :D
I have a feeling France is itching to take Nanking (saltpeter).
A boatload of troops landed on the Indian island..
Wish I could keep playing, the next few turns look to be interesting :D
Good luck..
LKendter Feb 10, 2002, 10:12 AM Well, since you probably broke the French alliance ...
Go Thazi - I pray we don't get another war. We need time to improve our horrid infastruce.
As for the Metal X -
When a turn is razed, a road always appears in the spot. Sometimes a railroad does to. Don't worry about it.
Start shifting troops to the French border :(
Thiazi Feb 10, 2002, 01:33 PM Now playing and believe me, I do not want any wars.
Thiazi Feb 10, 2002, 03:04 PM I am having some technical problems, for some reason I keep getting virtual memory errors, so you can either skip or delay my current turn. Sorry about that but I've never ran into that problem before.
BrianJ Feb 10, 2002, 04:26 PM Originally posted by lkendter
Well, since you probably broke the French alliance ...
:(
Lee,
I didn't break the alliance, the French did all on their own. We are still at war with India.. I had an idea to make peace, then backstab to get that little town by Germany but never carried it out, mainly because the alliance was in effect.
Maybe the next player can try that though.
The Indians haven't given up though. around the time Madras flipped, their caravel dropped a warrior and archer off as an invasion force!
I beefed up our defence near France but more is required.. Most of our Cavalry is stuck holding Indian cities.
Thiazi, I hope you get your computer up and running, good luck, whoever is next!
BrianJ Feb 10, 2002, 04:51 PM I was just looking at the last save.
We can renegotiate Saltpeter with France, from 4 to 27 gpt!!!
This trade is surely stopping them from attacking unless they think they can take and hold Nanking.
We should renegotiate all our trades. I wish I had thought of it while playing.. Next time  :)
Thiazi Feb 10, 2002, 06:35 PM Ok, I think I have the problem fixed. I changed my virtual memory size from 384 to 512 meg and everything seems to be working fine now. Since, Lee hasn't posted I will take my turns now but if he has already started then we are better off having him play the turns. Hopefully, this problem has been solved but I've never had virtual memory issues before, I think I may be doing a reinstall next weeked.
Now playing, unless Lee has already started.
Thiazi Feb 10, 2002, 08:16 PM After forcing my way through the game 2 to 4 turns at a time, I was finally able to finish my 20 turns. I think I will try reinstalling next and hopefully that will help to minimize the problems but after changing the virtual memory allocation and still running into problems, it looks like a reinstall is on the horizon. I'll stay in the game but my normal speed of getting my turns out may be reduced. Sorry for whatever confusion or lag I may have caused in the game. Now for my turns:
1565: Newton's University is started in Kyoto. The next leader may want to do some micromanaging to knock a few turns off its construction but due to the above problems that was not much of an option.
1570: Bengal captured.
1575: Ganges captured.
1580: Lost incense but Germany refused to renew the deal. I tried several different offers but their economy seems to be in bad shape.
1585:
1590:
1595:
1600: Lower the science rate to 70% for one-turn and net 133 gold. Research of Nationialism is complete and we will now focus our attention on steam power. Science is raised back to 80%.
1605:
1610: We start bombarding Punes and we raise our luxury rate to 10%.
1615:
1620: Bismarck demands wines and since we want to avoid any more wars, I agree.
1625: India asks for peace but we decline.
1630:
1635:
1640:
1645: Lower the science rate to 70% for one-turn and net 89 gold.
1650: Research Steam Power and start Industrialization.
1655: Capture Pune and the Indians are destroyed. Since the war is now over, I start a revolution and the next leader will be able to switch governments. I am not sure if we have all available forms of government, so I would probably check that before I would start the next turn.
My reign as frustrating as it was to play was very productive for the Japanese people. The hated Indians are no more, our military is very healthy and we have continued infrastructure improvements. We have started the rail net but as of now, no rails have yet to be completed. I did not renegotiate any deals, since I did not know how and I did not upgrade our musketmen to riflemen because the game would crash every time I attempted that but we do have enough gold to upgrade a sizeable portion if not all of our musketmen to riflemen. One your first turn, you will choose the new government type and you will probably want to do some trading but it seems like everyone is very stingy. Good luck to the next leader.
BrianJ Feb 10, 2002, 10:06 PM :goodjob:
Sounds like you had a great turn dispite the technical problems!
For future reference..
When you are at the negotiating table, at the bottom of the screen a panel reads 'New' and 'Active'
Click on active and you will be able to see all active treaties. Click on one to renegotiate it. As simple as that.. It is hard to find, and I'm not sure it is even in the manual! I got it from this board..
LKendter Feb 11, 2002, 05:21 PM Preturn -
I again stop a working mining a mountain that can never be used. Cancel several more dead-end mining projects ;)
I upgrade all musketman to Rifleman. Still a lot to go, as I need to upgrade Samurai to calvary, Pikeman to Rifleman.
Barring a war, my plan to start building a good railnet to connect our cities. We seem light on workers. We are heading out of Anarchy next turn, so my goal is Democracy. The extra worker boast will help.
Trade Persia Theory of Gravity for Printing press, 89 gold, world map and 3gpt. One tech down. Then I even up trade Thoery of Gravity for Democracy with Russia. I avoided giving away Steam Power - I want US to have the jump on Rails.
Then on to misc trades - 16gpt from Germany for Ivory. I get Dyes from 10 to 15 gpt. A mere free world map increase Germany to Polite. Persia has money, 13gpt for silks. Ivory from 2gpt to 13 gpt. Gems up to 13 gpt. Persia runs out of money, and we only get to 8 gpt. Still, quite a bit more cash from Persia.
We have so much excess Ivory, I give Russia a free supply. The whole world is now polite, it should be a quite 20 turns.
Very dull turns, which I appreciate after my Indian war turn last time. I love religous civs, and one turn of anarchy. The Democracy of Japan is formed. Rescue the calvary from the Islands. Got calvary out of city defense mode. Connect most of our cities with a rail net. Newtowns university is completed. Research begun on Medicine, I want the ToE.
Germany declared war on Russia in 1710AD, yet I don't think much has happened there.
Summary - Connect our cities with the Railnet. That is the utlimate in defense for Japan. Target ToE as our #1goal, as that will insure a large tech lead. Concentrate the rail net improvements near our core cities.
The palace in Edo is a placeholder for ToE - Switch as soon as available

LayZMan Feb 11, 2002, 09:15 PM I'll probably do my turns tommorrow night or so
LayZMan Feb 13, 2002, 12:34 AM I'm going to have to pass on this one, not sure I'll finish before the 48 hrs are up (Not sure when it's up). Gotta finish up a project and get it working by tomorrow (actually today since after midnight).

BrianJ Feb 13, 2002, 08:22 AM OK I can play tonight

Hmm maybe not tomorrow because it is  day :)
Anyway, I intend to play my turns, this is not a skip!

BrianJ Feb 15, 2002, 08:06 PM Briangowa, the latest of a long line of leaders gets elected as President of the Japanese Democracy.
He notes a strong military, a strong economy, and good relations with all neighbours, except Catherine of the Russians. Not sure why she would be annoyed with us.
1754:
Thucydides completes his Great History of the Most Powerful nations. Japan is in the lead of course! Russia is last, possibly the source of their annoyment..
Moves stacks of workers around building railroads. I WANT THE PATCH!! :D
1756:
More of the same. Beijing builds a factory, starts a cathedral.
1758:
We learn Scientific method, start Replacable Parts.
Edo starts ToE, will complete in 15 turns..
1760:
Hyderabad riots, Briangowa sends in the Geishas.
1762:
Madras riots, sends in the Jugglers.
1764:

Notices Catherine is furious with us now??
1766:
Rail building
1768:
More of the same.
1770:
Learns Replacable Parts and starts on Sanitation to allow our cities to build Hospitals.

Upgrade all Riflemen for 540 gold.
1772:
Reports say Paris has completed Shakespeares Theatre.
1774:
1776:
1778:
Briangowa grants Universal Sufferage to all Japanese citizens at a ceremony in Kyoto!
Sanitation completes, Starts Corporation. ToE to complete in 5 turns. Will most likely get Communism and Espionage from it. :(
A French Pikeman appears in our territory, riding our rail net.
1780:
Russia asks for MPP, ROP. I'm not interesting war with Germany  so turn her down. I offer her Pune
since it will never do us any good! Her attitude is now Polite.
There is Rubber in 2 tiles just across the French border.. hmm :) Our Rubber is at ganges and Kolhapur. Glad we 'persuaded' the Indians to join Japan!
1782:
Hospitals are started across the land.
1784:
Persia wants ROP and MPP. I give them ROP.
After a long, quiet term in office, Briangowa retires from Politics.
Well that was a quiet turn, mostly built infrastructure. Some military added too.
ToE about to finish.

I have the patch installed and if that becomes an issue, I can revert to 1.16 and redo my turns. My plans for this set of turns is to just keep infrastructure and military improvements going and if I get lucky, I will try to set up the next player for a good set of turns.
BrianJ Feb 16, 2002, 12:12 AM I played with 1.16f, Haven't got 1.17 yet but will this weekend..
Thiazi Feb 16, 2002, 12:41 AM 1784: Trade Military Tradition to Persia for Free Artistry, 19 gold and their world map. We purchase Communism from France for 849 gold and our world map. I know that Communism is a relatively useless technology and that it cost us a lot of gold but I felt the chance to get two useful technologies from the Theory of Evolution was worth the fee. The research of the Corporation is complete and we now begin studying the Atomic Theory.
1786: The Theory of Evolution is complete and we learn Atomic Theory and Electronics. We now start researching Refining.
1788: We start the Hoover Dam in Satsuma; it will take 23 turns to complete.
1796: Kyoto starts Battlefield Medicine; it will take 11 turns to complete.
1798: Our research of Refining is complete and we now begin researching a stronger metal known as Steel.
1806: We swap territory maps with Germany. We lower our science rate to 60%, so that we now operate at a profit rather than a loss.
1808: Our research of Steel is complete and we begin researching Combustion.
1818: Battlefield Medicine is complete in Kyoto.
1820: Our research of Combustion is complete and we now start researching Mass Production.
During my reign our people built two wonders, mastered seven technologies and have established what appears to be a massive technological lead. I also continued to pump out infantry, improve the railroad network and work in a few city improvements. We are also 5 turns away from finishing the Hoover Dam, which should give us a big boost in productivity. At our current research rate we can have tanks in as few as 10 turns, so we should try to delay any wars until then. The French seem like an attractive target, since they already have much of their rail system complete and I don't see them being able to put up much of a counter attack. The only country we need to worry about is Germany but we have a huge tech lead over them.
LKendter Feb 16, 2002, 01:05 PM Preturn -
Upgrade our handle of cannons to Artillery.
Switch Izumo to factory. Production is the only thing this city is good for.
1828 AD - Continue to irragate Kagoshima, the city is growing again :) The palace expands, and it takes a bit to figure out where to expand it!
1830 AD - Chopping down forrest everywhere for the 10 free shields. I take the easy choice - research tanks. Hoover Dam is completed.
1832 AD - I like the patch - Shift-P until pollution is cleaned up! The j stack option is nice to move a block of units to another area.
1838 AD - For only $400 we buy espionage off of Persia. You never know if you may want it. We can now build the intelligence agency. Not much else to trade, but I notice Germany is really dependent on us for luxuries. If he turns on us, war weariness will crunch him big time.
1840 AD - Research begins on Fligth. Tanks galore to be produced.
1852 AD - Begin Research on Radio, modern age is getting close
1854 AD - Intelligence agency completed.
Summary -
Up next - LayZMan You should be able to end the game.
Download the patch
[dance]This game is won [dance]
The whole world likes us - Germany would be the other on to be voted on. Russia hates Germany.
Build the UN and vote! Nagasaki is building palace to queue up shields for the UN.
No matter what, I plan to vote next time. There is no reason to continue this game. LK12 (I skipped a number somehow, will be starting).
Edit - deleted attachments to save space.
LayZMan Feb 16, 2002, 05:51 PM Having probs getting the patch (guess the ftp is down) I'll try later and let you guys know.
LayZMan Feb 17, 2002, 02:11 PM Alright, I'm not even gonna bother w/ the details since all I did was research and railroad our region. Anyhow, discovered Radio, Fission, and Amphibious Warfare
We got our Diplo victory in 1892, though barely. Bismarck and Joan voted for themselves.
LayZMan Feb 17, 2002, 02:14 PM hmm, didn't take the file.
