View Full Version : HOF Update 2
Dianthus Jan 10, 2006, 04:58 PM The Civilization IV Hall of Fame has been updated. 227 games were accepted since the previous update!
The 200,000 barrier was broken this update, 3 times! By Moonsinger with 282,812 and 237,582 and by Shillen with 246,641.
The 2nd Gauntlet (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=149964) has now finished. Congratulations to Orca for coming both 1st and 2nd with a 2760BC and a 2000BC Large Monarch Conquest, and Big Ben for coming 3rd with 1970BC.
The 3rd Gauntlet (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=153233) is now starting.
Apologies to those that we haven't mentioned, but this update was so large it's hard to single out a small number of players. Feel free to give yourselves a pat on the back in this thread ;).

Shillen Jan 10, 2006, 05:42 PM Hehe, look at all those Julius Caesar entries. Do you think Firaxis will realize they didn't nerf praetorians enough once they look at our hall of fame? I think they will end up reducing them to strength 7 in the next patch.
Congratulations to everyone getting onto the tables. :goodjob:
Big_Ben Jan 10, 2006, 11:24 PM Bah, I thought there would be more above me. I would have made sure to break the 2k bc barrier if I would have known that. Oh well, I am proud of myself. Been playing Civ4 for under 2 months :D
Big_Ben Jan 10, 2006, 11:24 PM Oh yeah, congratulations to everyone
LulThyme Jan 10, 2006, 11:54 PM Congratulations everybody.
Nice to see all those old and new faces and all this activity.
All that preparation from HOF 3 certainly helped, as the staff seems to be in control.
One thing triggered my eye:
a 3560 BC conquest win by Vokial on Deity standard map...
Suprised nobody commented.
I checked the saves and was able figure out how that worked...
The starting position looks weird though...
How often does that happen...
If its replicable, makes fastest conquest sort of a moot point...
Ralelen Jan 11, 2006, 12:16 AM Congrats everyone!

Well spotted LulThyme. I've actually already reported that as a bug, both the map generation and AI behaviour :mischief:.

Hehe, nothing to do with that... I thought the HOF team wouldn't accept it anyway, but they did! Maybe because I didn't cheat... I was surprised to see my settler on an 8 tiled island next to the other civs... when there is a huge empty land out there.
Why didn't they attack me, nobody knows... they could have easily killed me, but if I don't declare war my culture will push them to the big land causing them to spread.
I confess I am not that good gamer... But this deity map... hilarious.
I hope they will fix this sooner or later.

Exactly! You didnt' cheat and didn't break the rules, just got lucky with the map. Hopefully the map generation and AI will get fixed in some future patch so this isn't possible though...
Shillen Jan 11, 2006, 01:43 PM You have to expect players to find bugs once in a while, though. I think a policy similar to the one GOTM has is needed for the HoF also. That is that you reserve the right to disqualify an entry for a previously unknown bug exploit. If a player is not sure if something is an exploit or not he should ask if it is allowed or not before using it. I mean if an entry like that was submitted to the real hall of fame then accepting it would compromise the integrity of the entire hall of fame.

Its not only the map generation:)
As Dianthus and you both point out, the AI should attack you.
We could test more and figure out.
I think it has to do with the AI not having any city, so had founding one as a priority so does not attack or something.
Still very dumb when combined with this stupid starting position.
Angoth Jan 11, 2006, 03:48 PM I'm confused. First, let me say hi. I got CivIV for Christmas from the wife and it's awesome. But, being so new (I haven't played since Civ II, I think), I don't get it. On Marathon how is a 3560 BC Conquest victory possible? I don't get how you could win that fast.
What I do know is an 8 block island with a city on it gives you massive food and commerce. So how does that favorable starting position lend itself to a win that fast? If you are on a faster game, you would have fewer turns, right?
Thanks in advance,
Angoth
Quantum7 Jan 11, 2006, 03:53 PM I'm guessing the AI's couldn't settle because they were too close to his city. And couldn't move because of his culture. --> They had to declare war to move, which they apparently didn't. Not sure how he destroyed their settlers & archers though. Maybe 3560 is the cutoff date at which you must have a city, otherwise it will auto-declare a win.
Dianthus Jan 11, 2006, 03:53 PM The game was won because after 10 turns the only player with 1 or more cities was the human, so a Conquest victory was declared. The AIs were still alive, but hadn't settled yet. It's a bit of a bug with the AI behaviour as they won't settle near a player they are at war with, but couldn't move further away to settle due to being on a tiny island.
LordCopenhagen Jan 11, 2006, 11:50 PM Damn, submitted 22 games, all of them published, and not even an honorable mention on the front page.
Bah humbug!

LordCopenhagen Jan 11, 2006, 11:52 PM And DAMN! Still behind Billator for total score! Those 3 200k games I just submitted should even it up
:)

I think it's not the same if someone uses one exploit constantly (on purpose) or just gets into the situation without trying.
I do understand that anyone could achieve victory on this map so this result is not backed with ultimate gaming skills. But the HOf is for sharing stuff and I couldn't resist letting the world see that outcome! :crazyeye:
When I submit a file I ask HOF if they accept it or not. So everything else is down to the HOF team now. Feel free to delete my submission.

I think technically they are not even allowed to settle there due to distance.
Or barely.
the main bug in my opinion is that the AI doesnt kick his ass, with like 10 troops vs 1 times 3.
