I'm working on my first Scenario using the Worldbuilder; everything is going great and I'm really enjoying getting creative with the map, resources, and starting locations. However, I'm not entirely happy with the civilizations that I initially selected when I started the game. Is there any way to change them now?

And also, is there any way to change the names of computer civilizations (e.g., I'd like Egypt to be called Kemet and India to be called Kathay)? This was easy to do in Civ III, which I really liked.

Does the Civ IV Worldbuilder have the functionality I'm looking for here, or am I stuck with the civs I initially chose (and their standard names, too)?

Try opening the WBS file in wordpad. Take a look at the one you made and others and see how they are set up. A little copy and paste from one file to the other will quickly let you do what you want.

Unfortunately, saving a file in Worldbuilder causes a lot of things like unit positions, and revealed tiles, etc. to become fixed, and no longer random. You have to clean them up (delete various units/unreveal the map/etc) before saving, or all those things are saved, as well as the starting civilizations. Its a really tedious job to go into the WBS file in word later, and search for all the residue of a WBS save and delete it. But to do it use the find function of your text editor, and type in "unit" for example, and delete all the stuff that relates to a unit, or type in "teamReveal" to get to all of the lines in which a plot is revealed, and delete all those lines. You may have to do this for "route" and "city" depending when the WBS file was saved.

To get all the civilizations functioning, and maintain the randomness, get a map that already does so, and copy/paste from the WBS file to yours, the BeginPlayer sections-EndPlayer (from Player 0 to 17) (pasting over yours). My map in the "Map" section is one such (North Western Europe 150x110).

Make certain you save your original when you do this, until you are certain the new, edited version works.

Hope this helps. I'm no expert, but this is the way I've been doing it.

I'm certain there are likely editors that do this more easily, as well.

Well, I entered Worldbuilder immediately upon starting the game (4000 BC) so there's no worry about cities and such (though I did have to go clean up the revealed areas of the map for each civ after I moved them around). The scenario I'm creating is simply an alternate Earth with all "ancient" era civs (no Americans, English, Spanish, etc ...). So far I haven't encountered anything, map-wise, that I can't edit and tweak just fine from within Worldbuilder. No need to start messsing with text files on any of that.

My problem is that I want to change the names, and leader's names, of some of the civs I've included in the scenario. For example, I'd like to change [Louis XIV / French Empire / France / French] to . I'd also like to be able to remove a civilization from the scenario completely and replace them with another. I understand I'll probably have to do these things by modifying a text file, since Worldbuilder doesn't seem to have the appropriate functionality. However, I need really explicit instructions on what to do because I'm an utter novice at this. I guess I'm looking for someone who can say "Open this file, go to this line, and enter these changes". Or something close to that.

Thanks for the advice though, [B]Craig! Much appreciated. If I can't get more detailed instructions on what to do I might try experimenting with the WBS file as you suggest.
