View Full Version : Recruiting for PBEM 8 player economic team game

CB Droege
Jan 13, 2006, 05:19 PM
This game is full.

Team assignments will be semi-random. There will be four teams. Each will consist of 2 human players and one random AI, for a total of 8 humans and four AIs. The AI diff will be set to Noble.

Checks to be set:
Always peace
No cheating

Victory conditions available:
Time
Diplomacy

Speed:
Quick

Map:
Continents: Each team to its own continent.
Standard or large size (haven't decided yet, maybe I'll put it up to a vote.

Basically the challenge is to see which team can create the best island empire. The two players on each team will have to be able to work together and with their random AI to keep as high a score as they can until the time limit. The diplomacy option is available so that the other players can decide to essentially elect a winner if someone is in an overwhelming lead. (as opposed to quitting because you are so far behind in the late-game that you don't think you have a chance anymore).

The speed is increased because the players do not have to worry about combat (except with barbarians in the early game) so the normal disadvantages of a quick game (units going obsolete before you can use them) is not an issue, and it allows the game to progress at a nice clip (hopefully making up for the high number of players).

I think this sounds like a fun variant. If you think so too, please join up.

Post in the thread with your desired leader name, your disguised e-mail address, your GMT adjustment, and a few preferred civs.

Is this going to be a pitboss?

CB Droege
Jan 13, 2006, 09:14 PM
No, sorry, I don't have an extra system do dedicate to pitboss... This is just a regular PBEM game.

I'd be interested.. haven't played a PBEM before though. Hope that's not a problem.

CB Droege
Jan 14, 2006, 06:52 AM
Not a problem, as long as you're willing to commit to the time investment that it requires.

Test out the PBEM feature to make sure that you can get it to work. If you need help with it, shoot me a PM.

Then, post the necissary info in this thread to join the game.

Hmm.. I might have to skip this one after all. We started a multiplayer game with a couple of friends today, and that will probably be taking a lot of my time.

Could someone clarify PBEM for me a bit? E.G. about the time commitment. I was under the impression that PBEM was extremely slow.. like one turn per day..? That doesn't really require a lot of commitment IMO :) And then the basic function of this game type: does it work so that one player makes his turn, then saves the game and sends the save file to the next player using his e-mail address and so on..? Sounds a bit complicated..

And what information does the player who starts the game need from other players? E-mail address and SMTP? ...and can a hotmail address be used? I think my university e-mail only sports an IMAP-server..

Yes, the time commitment is about one turn per day. Some people cannot handle that.

PBEM is Play by E-mail. Each person takes his/her turn them passes it on. All you need is an e-mail address, it doesn't have to support anything else, the player before you will just e-mail the save game to you, then you open it. The in-game e-mail function still doesn't work for everyone, so we don't use it.

Hi. Count me in for the economic game.

Leaders: Queen Victoria, Ghandi.
Time zone: GMT+2
email: aviv /DOT/ hurvitz /AT/ gmail /DOT/ com

I can play in 24h for sure, most days I can play one in the morning and one at night.

Just an idea I had - each team-member has the same pwd, that way we can have team-mates fill in for others if the need arises.

I would like to take part. However I've never tried PBemail before. I wouldn't want to spoil it for others by getting lost. Also is time of day going to be critical. I'm in the UK GMT +0

If you've never played PBEM before, I would only suggest that you try the feature to see if it works before you join a game, since some people have issues with it.

Your GMT adjustment is only important for determining the best turn order for the players.

We can get started as soon as CrazyJoe and fegguk choose leaders. (Sorry fegguk, I can do 'random' if that's what you want, but there is no option for 'random except for the Americans', unless someone has already taken the Americans (which no one has ;)))

Also, if you want your in-game name to be something other than your CivFanatics handle, let me know now. Hopefully we'll be starting the game tonight after I get out of work (5pm EST). When I send the first turn on to the second player, I'll also send an e-mail to each of you with the other players' E-mail addresses along with a reminder of who's on your team. :)

Is it in order to discuss maters of strategy with your team mate by email etc

CB Droege
Jan 18, 2006, 06:14 AM
It is encouraged.

Players may make any diplomatic strategies or deals with their teammates, or with members of other teams, that they want, except for a militaristic war (although a 'cold war' or a 'trade war' are perfectly acceptable).

In-game and out-of-game agreements are all acceptable.

The only thing that you are not allowed to do is discuss deals with teams that you have not yet encountered in the game. I can't really enforce that, so you're on the honor system there...

fegguk
Jan 18, 2006, 07:37 AM
CAn you discuss things with your team mate before you have met in the game.

Am I going to far? STOP me

CB Droege
Jan 18, 2006, 09:53 AM
You automatically have contact with both of your teammates (the human and the AI) from the first turn.

You even get to see the things that they can see on the map, and you get an up-to-date science report... (lets you see what they are researching, and how long it is planned to take)

Hopefully we'll get this back on track soon.

Have not received the 2nd turn yet.

I am having problems with my computer. I won't be able to play again until I get it fixed. This may take a couple of days, longer if it has to be returned to base.

Can someone take my turns in the interim.

I am sorry but there is nothing I can do.

I am writing form work. I don't think I would get away with instaling civ here

Still no sign of it on my end...

Let me just throw an idea into the thread and see how it bounces. How about setting up this same type of game, but online? We can make nice long turns to keep the PBEM feel and to allow thorough discussions between team-mates. And we should get really far ahead in the game, thanks to the no-war rule.

Oh, and it doesn't have to be instead of the PBEM game. I think we should keep playing that as well. I'm just so curious about how this newfangled economic game works and I'm impatient.

Around mid-march, I'm going to set up an extra computer as a PTBS server. I'd like to move this game to PTBS at that time, then we could really start getting things going in this game. I would proly set the turn timer to 8-12 hours depending on the preference of everyone else.

What do you guys think?

Pennywise_30

Sounds like a good idea.. at this rate we won't finish before summer, and I'll be unable to play from the beginning of June (damn military service).

Oh, and I currently have the save. Unfortunately the computers here at the university don't have Civ 4 :crazyeye: I'll play my turn in a couple of hours once I get home.

Feb 27, 2006, 05:03 AM
My computer has returned. Apparently in working order.

It might be better to give it a couple of weeks of use to see if the problem returns before I rejoin the game. That is assuming I still can, I wouldn't want to bugger things up now if its now running smoothly.

Alright. I'm sadly declaring this game as a lost cause.

I still want to try the Economic Team Game format, however, so I'm going to start the game again as soon as I get my dedicated PTBS server up and running. Watch for the recruitment thread.

The PTBS game will feature quick turns (proly every six hours) and no AIs (meaning more human players). I'd like for all of you to sign up for it when it's ready. It will be fun (and much more convenient). :)

Furious
Mar 22, 2006, 04:19 AM
Any of you want to try a game with the same settings online?

I'm aiming for Saturday at 16:00 GMT (11:00 EST). This time is usually best for people from both continents to meet.

We'll turn off the turn-timer to suit the PBEM crowd and to encourage in-team and between teams chatting.

CB Droege, sorry for hijaking the thread (and your cool idea).
