Greetings, this is my first post. I am completely new to Civ.

A silly question first. I know when enemies attack you, they start from the 1st on the stack. How do I decide the order of the stack? Or the game decides it for you automatically? Thanks.

Just finished a duel against a Noble AI, and now I jumped to Monarch against 3 AIs.

I use chairman Mao of China. They are the Aztec to my south, Indian (not Ghandi, the other guy) to my west, and some African-looking leader to the far west not bordering my territory.

Time goes to around 1AD, Aztec just declared war to me, and I can see him pouring groups after groups of units to my territory, usually a mix of horse archers, archers & jaguar (dunno what that is, looks like shaman). He also has a few ships that keeps landing them to my back.

At that moment I had almost no defense, so I adopted slavery to get a few axemen / spearman out. They are capable of defending my frontline, but can't make advance. In the meantime Aztec horse archers landed to my back and chased my workers.

I have some tech advantage. I am now researching machinery and will soon be able to build Chinese special crossbowman. Hopefully they are nice. Is there any really good techs I should get after machinery? I am thinking of getting maceman to replace axeman... Will that make a good difference? Or simply rush for gunpowder, or the special crossbowmen... Thanks for your reply.

Just to cover this for starters - if you attack with a stack of units, the computer will first attack with siege weapons, and then the unit which has the best chance of winning.

Same thing happens when the enemy attacks you - the computer will pick the unit in the square that is being attached that has the highest probability (odds) of beating off the attack.

Hope that helps.

Thanks... :)

I ended up staring the whole thing over. This time I used the worker + worker (chop wood) + settler (more chop) + settler (more chop) build at the beginning, and it really gave me an edge compared to the first tiral.

I also tried to keep a good relationship with the neighbors. While they build armies here and there, I did only research and completely skip the religions. Soon I am the leading civ in tech. (with a shameless force of 3 warriors.) I also trade a lot of techs with the weakest civ to bring a balance to my potential opponents.

This time the tribe leader does not attack me because I often satisfy his demands (or load a previous save to avoid his endless harassment). Right after I got civil service (enabling maceman), I thought the time has come. The time was around 1AD, again.

With free drama and music, him promised me to attack the civ. (India) who holds currently the 2nd highest score. While they are both busy, I rushed out a few catapaults, macemen and cho-ko-nu to take out an Indian city behind my back. That city was very annoying... I had to take it out to protect my back.

As soon as possible, I made peace with India, because my real target is the annoying chief. With the same army, I took his chokepoint city between our territory. I advanced further to push to his capital. However, their defense is too tough that my chance of winning is like 10%... so I made peace again with the chief, but not before I dragged the 4rd civ (weakest, but most friendly African dude) in the war against the chief.

Since I play on a small map, before the campaign, each civ has 3 cities (except the weakest civ, 2 only). After the campaign, I had 5, and they all had 2. Plus I enjoy peace again, while the other 3 countries are at war.

The rest of the game became a walk in the park. :D
