View Full Version : What's Your Most Disappointing Game?
Whiskey Priest Feb 02, 2002, 12:07 PM Just Curious. I've been thinking about some of the money I have wasted on games I will never play again. My most disappointing game had to be Star Wars: Rebellion. It had such potential to be brilliant. A Strategy game where you get to play in the star wars universe! How did the mess it up sooooo much? I played it for about three days then lent it to a friend. And unless I need a coaster I don't think I'll ask for it back. Not only that but I payed almost $70 cdn for it!! Anyway feel free to rant.
Wolfe Tone Feb 02, 2002, 12:38 PM It has to be WWF Smackdown! Just Bring It for the PS2. I thought that it would be a brilliand game like SD!2 but it sucks. The story mode is far too short. The matches have improved slightly. The tables are rubbish. An what is up with he fact that you can to a Shooting Star Press of the top of a hell in a Cell and get up a straight away
MajorGeneral2 Feb 02, 2002, 02:38 PM Oh, that's an easy question. Any game for PS2 or XBox! Both systems suck!
GenghisK Feb 02, 2002, 03:50 PM lol. yeah, games for octopussy, oops sorry I meant games for consoles all suck :D I liked Speed ball 2 though.
Anyway, yeah Rebellion and SWFC kinda suck. But maybe I was used with having excellent LucasArts games (Xwing, Tie Fighter, ...) so I was too demanding?
Also a very disappointing game I've heard about: Daikatana. I never played it, since it's a shooter, but I've heard it had 4 years late in the release date but was just a piece of sh**.
Oh, I forgot: C&C 2 was disappointing too.
Flatlander Fox Feb 02, 2002, 04:15 PM Civ 3.
I had high expectations, and the combat still bothers me.
Alot.
In fact, so much that I don't play it anymore. It's not the tanks and spearmen, but its the horsemen defending against knights and winning (more than they should), or the calvary killing mechanized infantry like no tommorrow.
Age of Empires 2 is a close second, but only after I played it online and discovered flushing. That ruined an otherwise good game for me.
While a great game in most other areas, I am waiting on Multiplayer for Civ 3, then perhaps I will pick it back up.
GenghisK Feb 02, 2002, 04:30 PM I have Civ3 but I don't play it :) I am waiting for MOO3!
The Balrog Feb 02, 2002, 05:52 PM rturn to castle wolfenstein. Although i havent bought it, it still SUCKS! Many'a'bugs and anoying in the long run
Mikoyan Feb 02, 2002, 05:52 PM Global Domination, Spring 1999, big mistake.

So you haven't played Grand Theft Auto 3 then. It is a brilliant game for the PS2
DaEezT Feb 03, 2002, 02:01 PM Pool of Radiance 2
Apart from the graphic everything about this game simply sux :(
So I'm waiting for Neverwinter Nights.....
MajorGeneral2 Feb 03, 2002, 02:56 PM So you haven't played Grand Theft Auto 3 for PS2 yet. It is a brilliant game for PS2.
Well, I was exaggerating. I'm a HUGE Nintendo loyalist, and HATE most other systems, because I find them inferior. But, I'll admit that Sony has released some good games, but they can't match Nintendo overall. So, let me rephrase my last comment: Most games for PS2 and XBox suck.
damunzy Feb 03, 2002, 11:15 PM I have to agree with DaEezT, PoR 2 is sucky and on the top of my list of disappointments.
Civ3 almost makes it but I still love it.....love-hate relationship I guess. :)
Hamlet Feb 04, 2002, 03:05 AM Black and White has to be up there somewhere. Possibly the most over-hyped game ever.

Just wait till Republic comes out (in 3 or 4 years ;))
I bet it'll be at least as bad as B&W, maybe even as bad as Messiah...

A friend lent it to me and I am glad I never brought it. I played it for about 2 hours and never could be bothered to play it again since it was just an average game...
Nick Feb 04, 2002, 10:47 AM Tomb Raider Chronicles - how the same company could be responsible for that and the original, still superb TR I will never know.
Dell19 Feb 04, 2002, 11:45 AM A game I found disappointing was Midtown Madness 2 since it seemed that it was actually less fun than the original game. London was terrible if you just wanted to drive round and would have been better if they had included the M25.
kittenOFchaos Feb 06, 2002, 02:52 AM Black and White...I turned out to be a God uncaring about the training of monsters...
duke o' york Feb 06, 2002, 04:39 AM Well I really enjoy Tony Hawk Pro Skateboarding 3 on my ordinary PS, but I have to say that I'm still disappointed with it. It's not as good as it should be. The PS2 version is clearly miles better and yes, you can claim that this is because it is a superior machine, but the one I've got seems as though it was just rushed out for Christmas with a pale imitation of the PS2 version. They had built it up to be something really special, but it is practically the same game as THPS2 but with different levels. It is also less challenging than THPS2, but that's a good thing because the first game was more of a skating sim, the second one was more of a puzzle game and the third has combined these two aspects into a great game. As I said, I love the game but it isn't what it could have been :(.
Smash Feb 06, 2002, 11:06 PM another vote for Civ3.
Someone dropped the ball here.Maybe I expected too much?
ColdWizard Feb 08, 2002, 12:22 PM definitely Civ3. my expectations were very high (perhaps too high), and i didn't have much fun playing it.
andyo Feb 08, 2002, 05:08 PM By far - stronghold - thought is would be the new LotR II - it is horrible - nice graphics, but the missions are horribly repetitive - and you have to build a new castle each time - can never use the one you made last turn - the game sucks and I want my money back
Mark_Everson Feb 09, 2002, 12:09 PM My worst was the Turkey game Destiny from about 4 years back. It had lots of good ideas, but they were put together in such a misguided way that the game was a complete fiasco. It was a true micromanagement hell.
OTOH I didn't fall for Civ 3 :D

YOU MARIO HUGGER!
oh and on the topic for most dissapointing games that would have to be Civ2.
I expected it to be sooo much better than Civ1 but it just the same damned game with the same problems.
Not that its bad but man it wasen't REALLY much of an upgrade.
I expected more with that one and Civ3 matched my expectations for Civ2
SunTzu Feb 11, 2002, 09:00 PM PS 1 and 2 are awesome, PS2 rocks!
I'm also a huge Nintendo fan.
Zelda rocks!
They decided not to make the new Zelda look like Paper Mario!
GTA3 is awesome, so is Max Payne, Devil May Cry and Burnout.
NCAA final four 2002 sucks, too easy to score
No real disappointment that i can think about

that game has been banned in Aus  as for my worst game? CTP!
Nick Feb 12, 2002, 04:34 AM Another game I was disappointed about was Swing for the PlayStation (and PC). I got a demo of it and absolutely loved it but then it was never released. I can't think why since the game was a puzzle one and was basically finished on the demo (which fades to black after 2 minutes).
Mr Spice Feb 12, 2002, 04:56 AM I can not decide wether it is Throne of Baahl (if add-ons count) or Civ 2.
ToB was a huge let-down, I could barely bring myself to play it through once.
Civ 2 was a huge, and I mean huge, disappointment when first playing it. I really loved Civ 1 and somehow I expected the sequel to be a divine masterpiece. However, after not playing any civ for about a year, I tried it again and got more stucked to civ than ever before. So in the long run, Civ 2 was no disappointment at all. In fact, it is one of the best games I have ever played.
Knowltok Feb 12, 2002, 12:36 PM 1. SW Rebellion. I echo the comments of above, so much promise...so little product.
2. Privateer. I suppose this was okay, but when "I read the box I had visions of Han Solo. The game just didn't live up to those visions. Too much fighting in a game that should have had more options and story. A let down for me in the wing commander universe.
Centrifuge Feb 12, 2002, 01:33 PM Mob Rule was absolutely the worst game that I have ever wasted money on. The box makes you think that it's has great possibilities, but it turns out that it's only a simcity ripoff, and a terrible simcity ripoff at that. CTP had potential, but just did not match up to Civ2.
Mikoyan Feb 12, 2002, 01:35 PM ToB was a huge let-down, I could barely bring myself to play it through once.
What was so bad about it? I think it's a great game!

What's Mob Rule?
And btw, yeah I always hated CTP1 and 2 awful interface. It was quite annoying and accessing anything, including city window was really a pain in the ***.
Centrifuge Feb 13, 2002, 06:53 PM GenghisK: "What's Mob Rule?"
Mob Rule, is a game that I wasted about 45 bucks on. It's a "real time Strategy" game, that is supposed to be about building a mob style crime syndicate in the style of the Sopranos or The Godfather. Unfortunately, it does not live up to expectations. In the game, "The Godfather" sends you on missions. The missions all tend to be fairly lame, such as building pool halls etc. So you end up playing a game that feels a lot like SimCity but a lot worse because it is not replayable in the way that SimCity is. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
HIEROPHANT Feb 13, 2002, 08:18 PM Mario duckhunt as for value is not good since that game came with the system too many made.
GenghisK Feb 14, 2002, 04:23 AM Ah, Centrifuge, I've heard about several games of the same kind. Gangster 1 and 2 (awful) but will be relased soon a game called Mafia. That seems really to kick ***. Graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay should be as good as Max Payne. "Should be", I said :)
Mr Spice Feb 14, 2002, 07:54 AM Originally posted by Mikoyan
The Long Story, please.
Ok, the long story it is.
IMO Baldurs Gate was a great game. The story was well componated, there was an exiting element of exploration in the game and there was also room for much role-playing. Most missions could be completed in a few different ways, there was a significant element of choice. Add good graphics and a polished feeling and you have a winner. I liked BG tremendosly.
Then came the sequel, Shadows of Amn. While still a good game, the story was not as good and IMO the element of exploration was not as significant. It is difficult to explain exactly why, this is just a feeling that I have. The environment was not as well thought through as in BG. When playing I often got the feeling that the designers did not really know why some of the locations were even put in the game, they were just added for the sake of making the game larger.
Nevertheless, SoA was a good game.
Then came Throne of Baahl, supposedly the spectacular ending of the series. Since both BG and SoA (especially BG) were good games I had high expectations of ToB. But in ToB almost every element that made the two previous games so good were completely missing. The good graphics was still there, but that was about all.
In previous titles you could chose what missions (except the main story) to complete, but in ToB the designers had just thrown in a handful of dungeons to mop up. There were no different solutions nor any room for role-playing, just a straight line for you to follow. There were a few "test" supposed to force you to choose between "good" or "evil", but these test were just another chance to get your character killed and had absolutely no impact on the story whatsoever. All in all ToB was no RPG, but a dungeon crawler- game.
I am well aware that many people like ToB, but I did not. Hopefully I have managed to at least partly explain why.
Ptolemy Feb 19, 2002, 09:31 AM Return to castle - Wolfenstein 2 and Championship Manager 2001/2002.
I had heard so many persons recommending it but when I got them they were just pieces of **** and I played for 5-10 hours in the games and since I have not touched them.
Ay I forgot GTA2 and GTA3. I still play GTA1 because it is so great and because that none of the other GTA games reaches its heights
ACM Feb 19, 2002, 10:32 AM CTP, Rebellion and Black and White. They were all great disappointments.
Mr Spice Feb 19, 2002, 11:19 AM CTP is probably the worst game that I have ever played, but I cannot say I am very disappointed with it. I did not expect too much and just borrowed it from a friend to have a look.
I mean, a Civ - clone not made by Sid? How good can it possibly be? ;)
Jinglehopper Feb 21, 2002, 12:26 AM How could Star Wars Rebellion suck as much as it did? Great promise, horrible design. I sat there looking at different screens for two hours before I figured out I just bought a $30 coaster.
Lucas Arts should stick to pilot games. BTW, does anyone know if they are continuing that line? I loved XWING and TIE FIGHTER, but that was like five years ago. The technology must have improved to give us a great game.
knowltok2 Feb 21, 2002, 08:18 AM I think they have a new one out right now that is starfighter combat based on the first prequel. I've gotten burnt out on them myself, so I haven't picked up the box to make sure.
Karnokki Feb 21, 2002, 04:00 PM Dissapointed in Empire Earth!
I quickly tired of all that "FOR HONOR AND GLORY" and "AT YOUR COMMAND" garbage the little beggars spouted everytime I moved them someplace. And that narrator, where did they dig that guy up? What a voice!
The gameplay itself wasn't very interesting either. Perhaps because I've play a lot of AoE (loved it) and EE didn't offer that much new. Another reason could be that I loaded Civ III right after EE and haven't looked back since.:goodjob:
I am looking forward to Age of Mythology though.

I am looking forward to AoM too although it has been delayed and will probably be released here in about september...
knowltok2 Feb 22, 2002, 08:52 AM Is Age of Mythology, Age of Kings with a different genre?
Dell19 Feb 22, 2002, 10:47 AM It will be the same genre but they are changing the format slightly. I think there is going to be more focus on single units and onece again we are the time period of the Greeks and Egyptions...
MajorGeneral2 Feb 23, 2002, 02:12 PM Besides most PS/PS2 games, Jurassic Park Part 2 for the SNES. The first JP game for the Super was quite good, but the sequel (not based on the movie/novel sequel) was far to simplistic and unclear.
Sixchan Feb 23, 2002, 03:23 PM Well, Tenchi Muyo for the SNES gets it from me. Luckily, I just downloaded the ROM and an emulator, so I didn't pay for such a piece of **** game. RPG my ass.
bvd Feb 25, 2002, 10:06 PM Civilization III; Firaxis balked at fixing the fundamental flaw of the series: micromanagement in the form of unit movement. Every unit must have orders, at some point given by the player, and every turn the player is forced to watch them move. Even the automated workers; they removed the "don't zoom to units with orders" preference from Alpha Centauri. Now turns can last for up to five minutes without the playing doing anything.
Why can't a player make as few decisions as he/she pleases? The civilization's ascent should be controlled by broad choices, with the player micromanaging when needed. While Firaxis took this approach in the form of "governors", they are a pain to customize, next to useless because of this and there is no way you can turn them off, at least in the unpatched version.
Firaxis lying about its multiplayer capabilities was the harbinger of the game's quality, which, even patched, remains at beta. Relative to the hype surrounding it, it is perhaps one of the worst games ever released... though it does beat the **** out of that farce known as Call to Power.
Greadius Feb 27, 2002, 03:58 AM Someone picked Throne of Bhaal? I think the 15 hours it took me to play that were the most fun I ever had infront of a computer. And not because of dungeon crawling, which I didn't think was bad compared to say IWD, but because I watched the young Paladin I had played through endless hours of BG finally finish the game. I almost cried at the end; it was touching :)
My worst game has to be Pool of Radiance 2. The game is endlessly dry and repetative, it is beautifully looking, but it repeats that beauty room after room. The games storyline is simplistic and pointless; the game weights the random dice against powerful characters to 'balance' the game (Any tabletop fan will know that you do NOT fudge players dice rolls). And worst of all, the game was so bugged it eventually completely crashed out and I couldn't even finish the worthless thing. I felt SOOOO ripped off
Thunderfire Feb 27, 2002, 06:40 AM Ultima 9: very buggy,
one of the worst stories in a computer game
bad dialogs
bad performance ...
Rebellion was bad too.
The_Newbie Feb 27, 2002, 01:22 PM Civ 3 for the reasons previously mentioned by other people and CTP because it had all the things I would have added to a Civilisation game but was let down by flaws never present in the civilisation series.
damunzy Mar 20, 2002, 02:04 AM I would also have to add Ultima Online and Everquest. I am going to try the newest one, Dark Camelot (I think that is the name).
GenghisK Mar 20, 2002, 04:11 AM I think you are actually talking about Dark Age of Camelot. Yeah it looks pretty. I have it (the beta version) didn't try it yet, guess why ;) Yeah Too busy struggling, burning, to free up my constantly full HD :)
damunzy Mar 20, 2002, 06:03 AM Thanks, I was thinking that the name was wrong. The beta? Uh, kind of like the whole WarCraft3Beta game? Do you have a server also?
GenghisK Mar 20, 2002, 06:16 AM As I said, I never tried it, I just know that you need an online account to play it. But maybe, as for W3, programmers have surely released private servers patches. I don't know. But it looks really good indeed, I'll have to try it as soon as I have time. i.e. not now!
SuperR Mar 21, 2002, 04:20 PM It would have to be Civ 2 without a doubt!!!

Yeah, definitely. I played that game for two days. It was cool, but it got REALLY boring REALLY fast. I payed like 50 bucks for that game, then lent it to someone.
Smash Mar 27, 2002, 11:25 PM I have many candidates. These should probably be in a "worst games of all time" thread but.....
DeerHunter-not even a diehard hunter could like this.Sit in a frigging tree and blow a horn and shake a rattle.Oooo..there comes a deer..pow...umm..repeat.I am absolutely amazed this title has made to version #5.
BattleChess..do I really need to say anything?..horrible animations of characters impaling each other..just an awful game.I'll bet you never heard of it.
WrestleMania(original nintendo version)...this looked like it was done by babies.Even for the day.Horrible play control..no check that..no play control combined with terrible music made this a huge waste of $.Played it maybe 5 minutes. That was more than enough.
CtP...whoa..what happened here?..I'm sure glad that was not my first "civ" game.I wouldn't be making this post thats for sure..not here.
A-10 Cuba or something..if you could fly in that game, you should be doing something with NASA.That was so bad it went straight freeware. It did look good as your A-10 inevitably met a firey demise by slamming into the ground.
I could go for awhile but I'll stop here with my all time worst game.A recent edition that has lowered the bar to an alltime low:
Survivor:The Interactive Game
:o yes,I bought this...this..I don't know what to call it.The hardest part of this jumbled set of files is getting it to run.But when you do,you wish you hadn't :D
I know I've missed some real stinkers.....
Jagdpanther Apr 10, 2002, 10:09 AM Panzer General 3D Assault... ugh...
Steel Panthers: WAW... no matter how hard I tried, I could not get into this game...
WWF Attitude... horrible execution, myriad of bugs, choppiness... bleh...

Yes, I have heard of it and even played it. And I do admit it was terrible. :)
Adamski Apr 11, 2002, 08:14 AM I played? Battlecheese once or twice - it must have been a freebie of some sort. Not the worst though:cry: that title would have to go to Ea Cricket 96 think it was. Even worse than the year before. I've got a good un though now- Icc2.:)
MrPresident May 01, 2002, 05:01 AM 3rd Millenium - I don't think even the game designers knew how to play this game! Although for some strange reason it came in three different CDs. One for English accent, another for Scottish accent and the last for Welsh accent.
GenghisK May 01, 2002, 05:54 AM Haha, true, that game s***ed hard. And also in the "nobody understands how to play", I give the first prize to Gangsters. Never got how it worked!
Dell19 May 01, 2002, 09:32 AM How about the Big brother game? Or Plumbers don't wear ties?
Note: I have never played these, just going on other poeple's opinions.
ArmOrAttAk May 16, 2002, 04:39 PM Conquest of The New World Deluxe Edition. The game crashes anytime after say 60 or 70 turns. There's no way to get you saved game back. It overwrites your save every turn and you can't turn it off. If you overwrite the name it starts saving with the new name. Really frustrating when you invest so much time only to have the game crash. I've tried it on several different systems, always the same. Go to the website and you find.."no patch needed". Disappointing because it has the potential to be a really good game.
Another was for my old sega. Dungeons and Dragons pool of radiance I do believe. 70$ I spent on that crap. Beat it in like 7 hours no lie. Was really suprising, My Gf was out shopping and I told her to pickup the hintbook for me because I thought I was missing important things, 20 minutes after she left the game was over. I know it said on the box something to the effect 80 hours minimum to complete.
craggoo May 16, 2002, 10:26 PM most definitely has to be infantry. it was a free, online rpg game by sony that was originally made by a smaller company that went bankrupt. the graphics werent great... but it was a really addicitve game. It was great fun for many years, problem is the greedy sony bastards made it pay to play. $7 per month is a rip for it so that is now my most disappointing game. Before it was Delta Force... there were way too many cheats and way too much lag on the game. Repetitive missions, bad graphics, not much of a storyline. They have improved it a little bit more in Delta Force Land Warrior. Only problem is the AI in single player is still horribly stupid and is nowhere near any that can be encountered in its fellow shoot'em up games.
VOODOO MEDICINE May 22, 2002, 10:57 PM Mine must be SW Jedi Power Battles on the Game Boy Advance. It's looks pretty awesome but the gameplay sucks ass:( :splat: :die:
Paradősis May 25, 2002, 10:19 AM I'd say that I was most let down by Dragon Warrior 5 (though the fact that I didn't get to play it until a half dozen years after it was produced, and then only on a computer emulation, may have a part to play in that).
Fez_Monk May 25, 2002, 02:14 PM Probably Superman 64. Oh wait, I should have expected it to be bad. Uh..

Damn, what was wrong with it?The last one I played was 4 on the NES as that was the last Enix released over here (USA) for a long time.
Paradősis May 25, 2002, 11:38 PM I think the problem was that I expected too much. I use to get their (Enix's) newletter, and they were talking it up, saying they were bringing the background back in battles and such, so I was excited, and then they said that they weren't gonna release it state-side.. so all those years I waited for a translation. And then I played it, and it just didn't live up to my lofty expectations. There were some cool parts to it, at first using monsters as allies was sorta cool (much cooler than the first chapter in DW4), and it was cool to decide which monsters to keep and which to leave behind. After a while though I wished I could have had created characters (that's one thing I loved so much about DW3). That's just one example, but I think it pretty much sums up the whole experience for me. At first it was cool, but then after a while I sorta realised that it was a step backwards from DW 3 and 4. I guess the game wasn't bad in itself, it just didn't live up to (my) expectations.
(you could probably find a copy fairly quickly searching with google, though I don't know the legalities regarding having a copy of a game in a country that it was never released in.)

it is far too easy and too short.
i played the game on highest difficulty in like 7 hours of so

Ozz May 27, 2002, 10:30 AM ST Bridge Commander,
It's slow, confusing interface, etc
More of a ST theme song with pics than a
tactical combat game.
Hell, ST 25th anniversity was more fun and
as realistic.

I loose track of that creature and he goes off and eats people. I first got it quite a while ago and last night decided to try it again, from the begining. Wow, what a mistake. I wanted to thwap the guy in the God's playground. I felt like I made no progress at all. I think I'll give it to my sister....but maybe I shouldn't because I really do like her. Guess I better shop for a real birthday gift then.
andyo May 29, 2002, 10:16 AM i agree - i tried b&w - and i thought the concept was good - but i couldn't get into it, and my stupid gorrila would go off and eat villagers whenever he could
starlifter Jun 09, 2002, 11:34 PM Since I have not played Civ 3 yet, teh most disappointing new game was Risk 2 a couple years back. An up and coming developer in Britain was supposedly doing a great job with it, but the final result only had some nice graphics that improved upon Risk I (1996, Hasbro). Everything else... variations of play, multiple maps, scenarios, fortifications, Generals.... you name it, they cut it out or messed it up. Yuck.

Hamlet Jun 18, 2002, 05:33 AM Black and White was spoiled by the creatures, which were as intelligent as a rock.
They should have concentrated on the Populous elements rather than the 'novelty' aspects of the creatures, which were an absolute pain and wrecked the gameplay. At the second island I had to stop playing, because my creature kept wandering off, and trying to babysit an ape, take care of my villagers, and do everything else meant I couldn't keep track of anything.
Totally wasted oppurtunity.
KingWilly Jun 18, 2002, 06:31 PM Black and White gets another vote. This game was really disappointing. Just couldn't get into it.
Also, I was disappointed with Railroad Tycoon 2. Played the original for hours at a time, but the sequel did not really improve at all.
EA Sports AFL '99 was a shocker. Nowhere near how good its FIFA counterpart was. Hopefully they'll improve it next time.
jkharvey Jun 24, 2002, 01:08 AM Civ 3 is my greatest dissapointment. I bought the game and couldn't event get it to run, so I had to get a CD crack for it, now I can't upgrade with the new patches aaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh!!!!!
Being in the minority here I hated Rebellion at first, until I got the interface figured out. Then I found out the AI was remedial. Then I discovered MP mode, now it is my most used game now.
