I rarely do this anymore but when I first started. When I prepared for war I would train alot of units to attack. When I finished going to war I'd have to many units left and nothing to do with them. This led me to declare wars I can't win. I just thought I'd warn other newbie players.

So what, you don't have the self-restraint to just park them somewhere until they're needed again? It's a good thing to have a large force on hand, having a strong military keeps the AI from declaring war on you.

Aye, (agreeing with Willem here) pick your most experienced units (the more heavily promoted) and save them on the border with your more aggressive neighbors. If you want to delete some units to save upkeep, delete specialized units (like the catapults/cannon/artillery you can replace faster than "mainline" units). If you even have to touch your offensive units (like swordsmen, armor), keep the ones who have earned useful promotions in battle.

It helps if you have to start a new offensive to have what I see as "shock troops"... troops that have been promoted beyond what you can currently crank out.

I overproduced in my latest game, and then actually had my units go on strike since I expanded so quickly. I ended up having to bring some barbarian sentries back into my borders to start breaking even again!
