View Full Version : Team name

So far we have only recieved these names.

-Team Apollo
-He was the Greek god of wisdom and knew the future, people traveled from all over the known world to hear what he had to say.

-Team Fate
-They were the ones in the greek world who decided who lived and who died, who won and who lost (what could be more usefull? ;) ).

-Team Odin
-He was the main god of the Norse world, all feared him, he was the supreme god.

-Team Hydra
-The all encompassing arms of hydra will trample all! Would make for great taunting when needed ;) .
Basically our team name should say what we are about. In the [c3c] MTDG we have a team of idiots, a team that is never to be found, a team that is hollow in the centre, and a team that blows itself up.

Se here are what the team names will say about ourselves.
Team Apollo - We are wise and that everyone will want to meet us and perhaps that we will be trying to win by spaceship victory. A team motto for this could be "We are wise beyond the stars"

Team Fate - We are the team that decided the outcome of this game and you are the ones that fate has decided to get rid of. Our team motto with this one is that "Fate has decided the outcome of this game" or something like that. I bet you can tell which is my personal favourite.

Team Odin - This will mean that we are the main team here and everyone must bow to us.

Team Hydra - We have many heads. Let's just hope that another team is not called Hercules. ;) That one was a joke. I really cannot add anything more than what l_c said.

ummm ... I had some in the thread as well ... initial wanderings into the imagination ... 3rd Post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=158143) :p

When do you propose that a team name needs to be done by? ... What is the deadline?

I ask this simply as I thought some were wanting to link the name with the civilisation?

classical_hero
Feb 11, 2006, 02:56 AM
There is a good reason why they are not included. :p I do not think that there is a deadline as of yet, but I dod think that it will be good to get our team name and motto done ASAP so that we can get some focus for this team. I really do not think that the team name has to link to the civ choice.

fe3333au
Feb 11, 2006, 03:32 AM
Ok :p ... care to share the 'good' reasons with us :D

Since this game has a strong religious focus ... may it not be fun to be a cult? ... or worshippers of the strongest and hungriest of the elements Fire

I tend to agree about not relating our name to the civilization ... I'd hate to be the Americans, Germans, etc. ... or the Idiots* for that matter

* Has Reference to the Gamma team

fe3333au

Gamma is Team Piffle

When I was talking about linking the team name to the civ we choose, I was not imagining something as ham-handed as "The Germans"

If we were the Germans, for example, we could be Team Schadenfreude (sp?), or Team Lebensraum; if we were the Americans, we could be Team Canada or Team MIC - military-industrial-complex.

Just some ideas.

This crosses several thread lines, so I thought I’d post here.

Regarding what civ to play, what strategy to pursue, and what to call ourselves. (since it’s all related)

So far in Civ4, I’ve played the Americans (George Washington), China (Mao and Qin Shi), India, and Greece.

My favorites so far, no contest, are George Washington and Qin Shi Huang.

George Washington’s style definitely tends toward the pacifist… until the very late game. The combination of Financial and Organized lets you rake in cash, and spend less than your rivals on upkeep. Due the half-priced lighthouses, every city Washington builds by the ocean can become an obscene cash/research center very quickly! By the time I was ready for late game warmongering, I was so far ahead of my rivals, I was literally attacking long-bow defended cities with my Navy Seals. That big of a tech gap isn’t likely to happen in this MTDG, but if we survive that long, Navy Seals are a great weapon. They don’t require any special resources to build (like tanks do) and they are SO versatile. We may have a bit of a target on our back for any early warmongers, but if we can stay relatively peaceful, George Washington is awesome.

Qin Shi Huang has the ability to be violent earlier in the game, but still build an impressive empire in peace times. Financial like GW, but also Industrious, Qin Shi has “peaceful builder” traits, but the Chinese UU (the Cho-Ku-Nu) makes them almost feel like a militaristic Civ in the 3rd (medieval?) era. Cho-ku-nu’s require Iron to build – so that can be a little tricky – but from the time iron appears on the map you’ve still got probably at least 40 turns to secure some before the Cho-Ku-Nu comes on the scene anyway. Qin also has the best chance to do a strategy that I tried in one of my current PBEM games that seems to be working pretty well. China starts with Mining, so I researched Masonry and then Bronze Working right away. (Humans tend to race for religions or Bonze Working first – so I had a good head start on everyone on masonry). With Masonry in hand, I got busy on the pyramids (at a 50% bonus, thank you industrious trait) and I was really lucky and had stone nearby… another 50% bonus to the Pyramids. I easily beat everyone the Pyramids, and then had access to every government form. Although I didn’t switch right away, being able to switch into Universal Suffrage VERY early in the game (and thus be able to rush build with cash) is an amazing asset to a Financial Civ (like Qin Shi). Thus, when that terrible aggressive monster Montezuma came a knocking, I was able to rush build units in Key cities and teach him a lesson in why you don’t mess with the Middle Kingdom.

At this time, I prefer a peaceful start - some war will probably be necessary in the early to early/middle game – and then I like going back to mostly peace.

China (Qin Shi Huang) suits this well.

Possible Team Names:
The Red Dragon
The Middle Kingdom
The Center
(all of these lend themselves to a cool logo!)

Hopefully that helps launch some good discussion on strategy, civs, and names!

I'll offer a few ideas for team names based on China as well - just for fun.

So far, G_W has mentioned
The Red Dragon
The Middle Kingdom
The Center

Here are some others for consideration:
The Celestial Realm (taken from a exhibit currently at the UN)
Q'in
Han
DPRC
Confucians
The Noodles
The No. 1 Take-out
The Empire Szechuan
The Panda
The Rainbow Lucky

I agree that Qin Shi Huang would work well, but what happens if the other teams agree? Are we going to go with Washington of our second choice? If so we might want to be careful about making a name dependent on the country, and when we anounce ourselves to be Team Red Dragon the other teams will have a pretty good guess at who we are and try to snach Qin Shi Huang too.

What if we called our team "Exploding Turtle"?

It is for precisely this reason that I'd prefer us to wait until we know our civ before deciding on a team name. There is nothing that says that we have to have a team name before we have a civ.

gbno1fan
Feb 11, 2006, 09:04 PM
I agree with peter. We should wait until after we find out our civ, and then name the team. That said, we can still have a healthy debate about what names we would choose if we land the civ we want.

fe3333au
Feb 12, 2006, 03:09 AM
Why make the team name dependant on the civ we choose  ... after all we are going to be naming the cities, units, etc ... and create our own flavour.

So far we are playing against team's Piffle and Innovia

Let's not be the straight team ... let us not have the creative juices tapped :( ... it should flow free, free like the wind (mixing metaphors is a querky blessing sometimes)

Not suggesting for one minute that we are a straight team

EDIT ... Just though Halo, it fits the relgious element and could also be constued as a holier than thou attitude to the other more baser teams  ... just been told not very original (thanks TheDivide) ... okay ... Divine Mandate or at least Divine-something ... maybe Divine Calling or ... STOP NOW !!! ... or I'll go blind :p

fe3333au
Feb 12, 2006, 09:59 PM
:wallbash: This is becoming an unmanageable mess (which I have contibuted to  )

The Team Checklist posted by the Mods, indicates that a name is to be chosen prior to a civilization picked ... therefore can we possible start this process again (certainly the poll was very premature :p) ... and disregard everything about linking to the chosen civ and just concentrate on getting a Team name in a logical manner.

I suggest that ... Everyone has ONE or TWO choice(s) for team's name .. they can indicate the sybolism if they wish ... This process lasts for 3 days and then we gather them together for the poll at the end of the week.

This will at least reign in my creative outburts ... so post your choices below ... all of the above will be disregarded :goodjob:

So start now ... Post your suggestions which will be put to a poll in 3 days.

fe3333au
Feb 13, 2006, 09:41 AM
My team name suggestion for the poll ... Team Meme ... it is an idea (malevolent, benevolent or neutral) that spreads like a virus.

peter grimes
Feb 13, 2006, 09:56 AM
Interesting, Fe! And thanks for trying to reign this in.

But I disagree with you on one point: That there is a priority or importance to the ordering of items in G_A's checklist. We are already Team Epsilon pro tem, and everyone knows who that is when we post in the UN.

But getting back On Topic, and to expand on your own suggestion:

Memesis - triggers a connection with Nemesis, but actually refers to the spread of a meme. However, what exactly is it that we are spreading? What is the content and substance of our meme?

fe3333au
Feb 13, 2006, 10:13 AM
What we are meming (if that's a word) ... is whatever we want to ... we have the ability to spread concepts and ideas ... it also ties in with the spread of religion.

It could also mean our team's sense of frivolity
> as in MIA ... coining the concept of Meleet :worship: as the creator, then used as official date system ... others expanded this by naming the world Meleet.
> MIA prints an international newspaper ... now Nutters too have one and there are whispers of KISS doing it as well.

Anyway it is something that can be interpreted a number of ways ... depending on how we play and possibly promote ourselves ...

It can fit any civilization and playing style ... a good thing in a team name.

Regarding Priority ... Surely a week is sufficient to get a selection of names and a poll happening ???

How about we just go with Team Epsilon?

It's kind of a cool sounding name, and it would fit any Civ we choose.

I even found this cool logo we could use:

I like it, actually. Anybody know any background on the word Epsilon? (Other than the fact that it's a greek letter)Ina quick search on wikipedia all I found was this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epsilon_Team) of any (sort of) real importance. On google all I could see was for college societies, and 1 or 2 companies. In math I did note that it usually meant the end, finiality, or something of that sort though ("The end of your empire has come, finality has declared it!" or something like that I guess...) might work as a taunt.:mischief:

Hey - that Wiki article is something!

I could get behind this. But we'd have to call ourselves Epsilon Team, to project the proper association. Wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epsilon_Team)

Other ideas in the same vein:
Illuminati
Skull and Bones
TLC [tri-lateral commission]
Project for a New American Century [only compatible with us as America]

Yeah... "Epsilon Team" or the "Illuminati"... I love it!

Always wanted to be part of a secret society that ruled the world.

2. Epsilon

I'm with you, DaveMcW. I think that GB is also in favor of waiting.

But there are some hotheads here who can't wait to get us branded ;)

That's why the contenders have been of a generic type that could work with any civ.

But currently I'm leaning strongly in favor of the Indians. Their fast worker UU would dovetail nicely with a FreeMason theme. Industrious little masons, scurrying all over the land....

I'd be really surprised if the Admins required a Team Name as a prerequisite for making progress on the other items on the to-do list.

One thing in favor of the name Epsilon Team is that, if I were proved to be wrong, we could choose it rather quickly. Of course, our team name should ALWAYS be italicized... maybe even with an exclamation point! j/k :)

Administrators indicated that we could name after being assigned a civ ... but once we have been assigned, they want swift branding.

Just another thought ... but I guess we will wait

Are we going to post a poll about this, we are the last team to have an official name after all. (and just think, after all of R_M and G_A's waiting, we just name ourselves the thing that we have already been named!, what they bear up with for us!)

And now for something completely different, how about the Long-Legged Toads. Those critters have reached the NY times http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/21/science/21obox.html?_r=1&oref=slogin . They have some interesting attributes, and I was struck by the comment that with them you can have "a massive invasion turn up in your research area." :) Seemed somewhat Civ appropriate, or maybe not.

@ kojimanard ... Hey, you want amphibious invasions ... google Cane Toads, those bastards were introduced to eat another introduced pest (that was introduced to eat an introduced plant) :crazyeye: anyway they are slowly spreading and killing Australia's native frogs (food) and they also kill our preditor birds and marsupials (poison glands on skin)

* Exploding Turtle
* The Red Dragon
