Time for a quickie, mumbles lee.

2900 BC - No real surpise, as Osaka is formed. Drop science, since no gain at 50%
2800 BC - As the warrior keeps exploring, the next city site is clear. A double cow square :)
2630 BC - Kyoto begins barracks. Starting to mine around Kyoto to get some production out of it.
2550 BC - Order up settler in Osaka.
2270 BC - My first goodie hut, and all I got was lousy angry barb.
2230 BC - The regular spearman that is exploring finds more luxuries. Crappy area for a town, but 2 furs.
2150 BC - Order up a worker in Osaka. Once again a goodie huts gives us angry barbs :( Our warrior spots dyes.
2110 BC - Up the science rate to 60%. Masonry in 28 turns.

Summary - I went one extra turn, I wanted to see what happens to our spearman - elite.
We have great territorty. Lot of grassland, and many have shields.
Kyoto has the potential to be a killer wonder city One worker should concencrate on MINING around Kyoto, outside of the cow. Don't any more settlers in Kyoto, and start the Pryamids as soon as possible.
Spearman on goto to Osaka.

OK, I have my coffee (they should make that a luxury resource - workers work 100% faster and stay up all night).

First impressions - Lots of space, no-one nearby, so I went for exploration, some cultural improvements (temples) to expand borders to assure happiness in the future, and a couple of extra settlers. So here goes.

1500BC - Fortify spearman at it's current position next to horses - wait for settler from Tokyo to arrive.

1475BC - Barbarians dispersed - warrior nearly dies doing it, so fortify for a while to regain a few HP before continuing to explore. The citizens love me so much they begin renovating the palace.

1450BC - Kyoto in disorder - entertainer added to amuse the crowds. Osaka creates settler - sent off to bend in river by wheat (excellent defense should we need it). Tokyo produces settler - sent off to meet spearmen, who is fortifying on hill by horses. Osaka now producing a temple, Tokyo starts a worker (we need more mines on that grassland).

1425BC - All is quiet.

1400BC - All is quiet.

1375BC - Spearman disperses more barbarians - promoted to elite.

1350BC - Tokyo connected to trade network. Road started towards horses.

1325BC - We make contact with a strange people who call themselves "Germans". They are a backward tribe, lacking Masonary, Pottery and Ceremonial Burial. They're also annoyed. They have nothing worth trading, so we continue on our way. Settler reaches spearman who is fortified by the horses. Edo founded - starts temple.

1300BC - Mine comes online in range of Osaka. Some micromanagement to maximize production with minimal effect on growth. Satsuma founded on bend of river by wheat. Temple started as we already had a spearman fortified on the spot.

1275BC - Nothing happens.

1250BC - More road/mine improvements complete.

1225BC - Kyoto about to go into disorder again. Caught it this time. Another entertainer. We need to get to those dyes to the NE - I send a spearman there to fortify since he had nothing better to do. German borders spotted in NW by exploring spearman.

1200BC - New border in NE. Unable to determine who's borders they are.

1175BC - Tokyo completes barracks. I have no idea when they completed their worker and started the barracks. Osaka builds it's temple. Both cities started on settlers. Alphabet learned. Start Horseback Riding.

1150BC - Nothing new.

1125BC - Nothing new *yawn*.

1100BC - Conscript warrior obtained from goody hut. Conscript and discoverer are sent in different directions to speed exploration. We find that the unknown borders belong to the Zulu. They have Horseback Riding, but want everything in our treasury plus 2gpt. I decline. They are polite right now.

1075BC - Spearman fortified by dyes. These need to be brought online ASAP to help with Kyoto unhappiness.

1050BC - Borders expand in Oaska.

1025BC - Osaka and Tokyo produce settlers. Both start spearmen as they have barracks.

1000BC - settlers set off, one towards the coast east of Kyoto and the other towards the reindeer west of Osaka.

NB: I'm looking at the yellow dot as a place to settle.

ShadowLord slips back into the now vacated throneroom to guide the glorious Japanese empire to its rightful destiny.

1) 975 BC Units not at full strength are given R&R time before they are sent out exploring once more

2) 950 BC The mighty worker army continues its efforts to connect the cities of the mighty Japanese empire with a highway system. Science increased to 90% dropping 3 turns off horseback riding

3) 925 BC All units at full strength once more, and begin to move further out into unexplored territory. Kagoshima and Nara founded. Ironworking acquired from Germans for ceremonial burial and masonry. Edo has 2 iron deposits 1 space away.

4) 900 BC Contact with Indians acquired for contact with Germans from the Zulu, but when I went to trade for contact between the Germans and the Indians, they had contact already

5) 875 BC The Germans begin the oracle.

6) 850 BC Horseback riding completed, writing began, 18 turns at 70% science rate.

7) 825 BC Settler from Osaka dispatched to bring dyes to our empire.

8) 800 BC Light purple border spotted northwest of the Germans. Contact with Russians, Persains, and Babylonians perchased from Zulu for 133 gold. Persia ahead of us on score. Everyone has writing except for us and the Germans.

9) 775 BC Light purple border turns out to be the chinese. They are technologically backwards, but with only 7 gold in their treasury, they cannot afford our prices.

10) 750 BC Northern exploration forces being sent to Zulu cultural border to block access of any settlers heading south.

11) 730 BC a bit of micromanagement of kyoto speeds the pyramids by 1 turn

12) 710 BC 4 settlers done within the next 4 turns, 1 settler 2 turns away from the dyes. This will bring us up to 12 cities soon. Chinese presently have 4 cities, Indians have 4, Babs have 5, Persians have 8, Zulus have 7, Germany has 8, and Russia has 7. Everyone except Russia is polite towards us, Russia is cautious.

13)

14) 670 BC Settler sent to bring us much desired furs.

15) 650 BC Nagoya founded near dyes, awaits road. Settler sent in the direction of the silks, exact placement of this city will be up to the next emperor.

16) 630 BC Warrior attacked by barbarian between our empire and that of the Zulu's. Pyramids completed in Kyoto, Settler considered. All building improvements have been finished, the only wonder available is the oracle at 28 turns, and cascade effect caused persians and zulu to switch to the oracle. Worker is ordered instead, the pop point will be back before literature is completed, writing is still one turn away.

17) 610 BC Germany demands 28 gold, they are now cautious. We, of course, refuse to be bullied into paying extortion money. Writing learned, since we are playing on an archipelagio, mapmaking began for the great lighthouse. Philosophy and Literature bought, costing us 241 gold in our treasury, and 13 gpt. Great Library started in Kyoto, 34 turns to completion. Osaka begins the palace as a placeholder for the great lighthouse. reasearch cut back to 40% to pay for the great library, mapmaking now 40 turns away.

18) 590 BC Persia finishes the oracle, and begins the great library. Izumo founded near furs.

19) 570 BC Another barbarian attack between us and the Zulu.

20) 550 BC Nagasaki founded, strengthening our grip on the dyes to the north. Settler is prepared to found a city whereever the new emporer decides would be the best place for it to start harvesting the silk.

We are technologically even with the major empires right now, and persia has a larger military than we do. They also have 1 more city then we do, but we have a settler ready to be placed within 2 turns max. Everyone except Germany and Russia are still polite towards us, they are still cautious. Right now, we have no offensive army, and Germany and China are weaker than us, and on our island. There is still alot of land on this island to be settled, so the next player has quite a few options, to start preparing for a war, or to grab as much land as they can. I would suggest grabbing the 2 horses and the iron between us and the Zulu though, as they don't have either resource presently.

As the dust settled after the death of the emporer Shadwlord, rumours ran rampant of a new dawn promised by a young man who called himself simply "Steve". Wise men found the subject of these rumours and dragged him onto the throne. Here is his story.

Steve surveyed the lands, noting that they had improved much since the first Emporer Steve had ruled. The lands were rich in luxuries and resources, which needed to be made use of, however there was a Zulu problem to the North East. Emporer Shdwlord had clearly made a decision to plant his brave warriors at the Zulu borders lest they try to bring a settler through. A third warrior was nearby and it was decided that he should partake in the blockade of Zulu borders, barring their settlers from the lands that are rightfully ours.

Orders were given to the workers, to connect Izumo, Nagasaki and Nagoya to the trade network. Tokyo completed it's temple and began a spearmen, as these were needed due to the imminent production of settlers from several of our cities. Kagoshima completed a barracks and was also ordered to train spearmen.

At this point the Domestic Advisor rushed in. "Emporer, your treasuries are low". And indeed they were. 5 gold left and losing 1 gold per turn. Something needed to be done.

Yokohoma was founded with two spices inside it's borders. Spearman training is ordered. Once a temple is built there it's borders will expand to include the third spice and a reindeer. The Emporer decides it's time for coffee, but his girlfriend is stuck in Arizona and not due back until this afternoon. He is forced to make it himself.

Our lone spearman up North sights a barbarian horseman. He moves to the hills for better defence. The horseman attacks and is slain without injury to the spearman. In the meantime Tokyo produces a spearman and begins a library. Tokyo's spearman is ordered to Yokohama to give it some defense. Second barbarian horseman is sighted on a hill by our Northern spearman. Our spearman moves away so that the barbarian will have to attack from the grasslands. True to form the barbarian attacks and is defeated. Again, no damage to our spearman.

Edo completes a settler, who is sent to Satsuma en route to colonizing the North Eastern lands. Edo begins a library. A worker is ordered to build mines around Osaka. There is a palace being built there as a placeholder for the Great Lighthouse. Shield production MUST be maximized there. Horses near Edo come online, and the road is continued towards Yokohama. Spices will be connected to the trade network en route.

Nara completes a settler, and he is ordered to the coast North of the Satsuma River, to begin filling in the borders. Our Northern spearman spots the barbarian camp. A road finally connects Izumo to the trade network and the worker is ordered to connect up the furs next to it. Another barbarian horseman impales itself on our Northern spear, again with no injuries to our troops. Satsuma completes it's settler and is ordered to train spearmen to defend our new cities-to-be. Our settler from Satsuma moves North and meets his counterpart from Edo. Both enjoy a lively conversation as they head to Nagoya. Northern spearman attacks the barbarian camp, killing a warrior. The last defending horseman is also killed, and the camp is dispersed, adding 25 gold to our treasury. We have a positive cash flow.

A goody hut to the west of the barbarian encampment is popped, and three warriors attack our spearman. He has no problems fighting them off. A spearman reaches Yokohama and fortifies there. A settler completes his journey from Nara to the fertile delta of the Satsuma River, and creates... SteveVille (sorry!). A spearman is ordered there.

Zulu impi, archers and a settler appear outside Isandhlwana. The Emporer attends to the Royal laundry while hoping that they'll head in the opposite direction. Yokohama builds a send spearman to bolster fortifications, and begins a temple to get the third spice and the reindeer inside our borders. Nagasaki is connected to the trade network, and a road is being built to Nagoyo. We are making 3 gold per turn, so I turn up luxuries to 10%. Entertainers in both Kyoto and Osaka are put back to work.

Word comes that the Zulu are indeed heading our way. The warrior blockade is activated to stop their expansion. Our two settlers have reached Nagoya and are joined by the spearman there. The merry trio head North East to found a city on the hill by the horses.

Aaaargh!! An order from the Emporer is misinterpreted (mis-clicked the mouse) and a warrior walks into Zulu territory. Not only is it more difficult to delay the Zulu settler group, but Shaka is not best pleased. He asks me to remove my troops from his territory. I comply and give him 1 gold to keep him polite. At the same time his borders expand. Damn! I'm still inside his borders.

Nagoya completes a temple and is ordered to replace the spearman that was sent with the two settlers. Furs are connected to the trade network near Izumo. The Zulu settler group has got through our blockade. I hope they're not headed to the Iron on their East coast. Warrior finally gets outside of Zulu borders.

Many things happened in the years that followed. Nara completed it's temple and was ordered to start a settler. A spearman reached SteveVille and was ordered to fortify. The trio of settlers and spearman, ordered up North East to colonize by the horses is attacked by barbarians. Our spearman prevails and the camp is spotted to the North East. We talk to Gandhi. He wants technology in exchange for contact with the Iroquois. We get it for 15 gold. Tokyo completed it's library and started a settler. Satsuma completed it's spearman and started barracks. Izumo and Nagasaki completed temples, both started on workers (we NEED those mines!!).

One of our settlers founds Shimonoseki next to the horses, dispersing the barbarians. One barbarian warrior remains, so the settler was fortified in the city along with the spearman. A mine is started on one of the grapes next to Kyoto. There is a shield on that tile. Science increased to 50%, reducing mapmaking from 11 turns to 8. Still making 5 gold per turn.

Clearly Shaka didn't send out his most intelligent troops. They plop down a city (love that term) where they stand. The iron is safe for now. Pulled our warriors outside their borders.

Steve's girlfriend arrived back home and they disappeared into the sunset together...

Notes: NE Lands look promising for Forbidden Palace. Palace in Osaka is still placeholder for Great Lighthouse. Mines needed round Osaka and Kyoto. We need more production. Settler is fortified in Shimonoseki.

Here's the save.

Preturn -
Wake up the regular spearman in Yokohama – we still need to explore!
I switch edo to barracks – it is stuck as size 2, so let it build troops. Kagoshima building spearman. Disband the regular spearman, as I hate non-veteran troops.
Switch Nagoya to barracks, I won’t see regular troops built.

Summary -
130 – We give the Iroquios Literature for Math, territory map and $21. Swap territory maps maps with Persia. Next goal, code of laws.
110 - Nara starts a harbor, that will be our best bet for trading for awhile.
90 - I start estabilishing embassies – OUCH! Why is the gold price for Persia double everyone else?
Trading summary – What we get for world map.
China is broke –2 gold. India 33 gold. Babylon 70 gold & 3/t. Persia 80 gold. Zulu 40 gold.
30 – Russia builds the Colossus.
10 – Destroy a barb camp, plus $25. Kendtertown is formed.
AD time frames arrives.
70 – Matsuyama is formed.

I didn’t complete 20, but I am heading out for a short amout of time n 2 minutes. Plus I need to do some turns in my English game.

Next up – Whomever claims the spot.

Stepping out of the shadows behind the throne, walks around to have a seat. He notes a surprising amount of lace added to the throne and wonders just who the last person to occupy it was. He notes a pile of messages the previous emporers have received, and is shocked that the persians think that they have a right to claim the great wall, and vows to try and put an end to their delusions of grandeur.

Inherited turn Micromanaging shaves a few turns off construction projects accross the realm. Shadow notes with concern that the zulu's have managed to slip past his blockade he initiated a few hundred years ago, and have founded Ibabanago directly on the horses. They also have iron within their territory, and are completely boxed in by the Russians to the north. With no room left for them to expand, they will be looking to conquer new lands soon. In a desire to leave despotism quickly, the treasury is used to fund science, shaving 8 turns off monarchy

1) 370 completed spearman and swordsman sent to the iron deposit near the zulu, Settler ordered. Galley widens search for new land by travelling in the sea, guided by the great lighthouse.

2) 380 Tokyo completes galley, begins aquaduct.

3) 390 A plan begun to block the zulus culturally from their horses is instituted, this will be effective until they build a harbor if we are careful with our roads, and can get the settlers their in time.

4) 400 Roads expanding, Kagoshima begins library

5) 410 Barbarians approach Sapporo

6) 420 pleased with the direction the empire is taking, many cities celebrate we love the shogun day

7) 430 Roads reach Summerville

8) 440 The Indians have begun the great wall. The Persians politely demand our territory map and 31 gold, which of course, we refuse

9) 450 The plan of isolating the zulu from their horses becomes a little more difficult with the founding of the zulu city Amatikulu, but still possible.

10) 460 Contact with Egypt, Rome, Greece, America, and the Aztecs purchased from china for our world map and 125 gold. Round of trading our world map with everyone ensues. Greece and Rome were deserpate enough to pay 8 gpt each.

11) 470 The completion of the great wall triggers a golden age just as we descent into anarchy with the discovery of monarchy. Summerville begins the construction of the forbidden palace. People rejoice as scientists begin research of Currency. Longing for the smell of fresh flowers, ShadowLord orders the construction of Hanging Gardens in Kyoto

12) 480 ShadowLord undergoes the rituals of corination, and is crowned king of the Japanese monarchy.

13) 490 Germans found New Konigsberg 2 squares from where I was going to found a city, will have to thank them later when it flips to us

14) 500 Babylonian conscript warrior found in Zulu lands

15) 510 Hakodate founded

16) 520 Ise founded, culturally sealing the Zulu from their horses until they build harbors

17) 530 A nice quiet turn of troop movements and worker improvements

18) 540 The citizens of the mighty Japanese empire stare in awe as the government dispences a new system of currency throughout the land. Inspired by what gold could be used for, the scientists begin to research new uses for iron, and a mighty weapon called a pike. The mightiest of them, Sun Tzu, says that if we learn feudalism, we can establish a mighty academy to train new troops. Research begun, 10 turns to completion

19) 550 Toyama founded. Spearman deep in Iroquois territory boards our galley in search of more land to explore

20) 560 Kagoshima begins construction of the first marketplace. Toyama hurries production of a temple. One last round of map trading gives us enough gold to establish embassies with everyone. And reveals that the Zulu have another source of horses. Hakodate and Ise use excess funds from the treasury to hurry temples.

Summerville has a settler just outside of it that would be perfect for founding a city between Tugela and Swazi. Tugela has no culture, and will soon flip to us, if we place a settler between Tugela and Swazi, Tugela will be completely surrounded by our cultural borders. Its a bit too close to Summerville to be useful as a production center, but with all those flood plains, would be a perfect worker factory, or for drafting defensive units later. It should be able to draft 1 everyturn at size 7.

740AD - Discovered Monothesicm through the Great Library. China declare war on India via pact with the Persians.

750AD - All is quiet.

760AD - Persian declare war on us for not giving currency! Shogun Dark Sheer step down from the seat of power.

To win this game the empire need more roads! We have marketplace but alot of cities only has roads connecting to and from the city but not around it. If we have more road then gold should not be a problem. Good luck to the next Shogun!

Not much happened at all. Didn't play the full 20 turns. Brief summary...

1160AD - America declares war on Persians.

1170AD - Moved stacks of workers around. Started mines and roads. Edo produces acqueduct, starts samurai - cities on western side are weakly defended. Bizen produces temple, starts pikeman. Greeks start Sistine Chapel.

1180AD - Workers start more mines. Keep watch on large chinese stack North of Yokohama. Tokyo completes cathedral, starts University. Kagoshima completes aquaduct, starts cathedral. Ngome completes Temple - starts library to exert more cultural pressure on Tugula (Zulu). We discover Music Theory - start Gunpowder for musketmen and to see where the saltpeter is.

1190AD - Extend ROP with china, as they have stacks of units next to poorly defended cities. Germans start Sistine Chapel.

1200AD - Izumi founded. Three reindeer within boundary. Pikeman started. Road completed to Echizen. Egypt wants Republic in addition to World Map. I give her World Map in exchange for territory map and 2 gold. Maps are pretty useless at this point. Nagoya completes marketplace, starts cathedral. Kendertown completes marketplace, starts cathedral. New Konigsberg completes temple, starts library. Isipezi (Zulu) is assimilated into our empire. Temple is ordered.

1210AD - Tokyo switched from University to JS Bach's Cathedral. Chinese stack wanders off towards German lands.

1220AD - Hakodate completes library, starts Cathedral to maintain cultural pressure on Tugula. Population is 6, but there is no growth. Micromanaged wonder cities to maximize production.

1230AD - Sapporo celebrates WLTS day. Suo produces marketplace, starts Library.

1240AD - More mines started. Kyoto in WLTS day.

1250AD - Shimonoseki completes cathedral, starts University. Gunpowder discovered. WE HAVE NO SALTPETER. Switch to chemistry. Would like to hit Military Tradition as without saltpeter, I feel there's a possibility of war. Science rate upped to 70% to bring chemistry in 6 turns.

1255AD - more mining.

1260AD - Zulus appear inside out borders. Redistribute defenders at Sheer's Castle. Some spearmen upgraded to pikemen. Renewed gems trade with Greece for silks, dyes and 120 gold. Chinese want technology and exchange of world maps. We send them away with a gold piece as a gesture of goodwill. Edo produces Samurai, starts cathedral. Yokohama completes cathedral, starts samurai.

1265AD - Mining frenzy continues.

Sorry about the briefness of this. Two things though, We have no saltpeter and there is a Zulu military buildup in the NE.

"Shadow Lord, come back, we need you"

Slowloy Shadowlord focuses his attention back onto this realm. "Yes, what is it?"

"Sir, you have been elected president again, we have a most desperate crisis!"

Stepping into the shadows of his beloved castle, Shadow Lord reappears in the oval office. "What is your crisis?"

"Sir, there are enemy troops all around us, and we have no salt peter. Help us please."

"Salt peter? Just call forth a dragon army."

"Sir, dragons do not exist."

Shadow Lord rubs his chin. "Oh yeah, wrong realm. Just have your scientists learn conscription, sub-machine guns will defend your cities."

"Conscription sir? Sub-machine guns sir"

"Opps, that was civ 1, sorry, got confused for a second, space-time continuom thing. Very well, I will see what I can do for you." With that, Shadow Lord has a seat and studies the notes of the Empire, with all of the advisors watching him, wondering if they have made a huge mistake by putting a madman in charge of the Empire.

Inherited Turn - Zulu declare war on us!

1) 1270 First order of business, upgrade all spearmen to pikemen. I was hoping to wait until we had Leonardo's Workshop first, but the Zulu didn't leave us much choice. Several Zulu units in our borders die, and we capture 6 workers from the 3 settler groups they had roaming our lands.

Looking around our empire, I see that we can fight a defensive fight on 1 front, 2 would result in losses on one of them, so off to the diplomatic screen I go. First, china, they declare war on zulus for monothiesm and 10 gold, better than the monothiesm and invention that they were asking. Next, germany, they go to war for Engineering. Finally, on our western front, India, for a mere 80 gold. Zulu can find no allies on our flank. So, to absorb their offensive strike, their neighbors, the russians, for engineering. And just on the other side of the Russians, the Babylonians, for 125 gold. Now, any stacks they send at us will leave them wide open for invasion from their other flank.

2) 1275 Sold all our barracks, we have Sun Tzu's Academy, began to move troops north. Egypt begins Sistine Chapel.

3) 1280 More Zulu units die near Ngome, Ise defends from Zulu attack.

4) 1285 We capture Tugela. America and Persia sign a peace treaty.

5) 1290 Chemistry learned. Vetoed the plan for military tradition, calvalry also needs salt peter. Our main advantage is tech, counterbalanced by lack of resources. Decide to extend our advantage and get rid of the need for resources by going for nationalism and riflemen, so astronomy is ordered up. We capture Amatikulu, and rome starts Leonardo's Workshop.

6) 1295 More Skirmishes along the border result in more zulu loses, but we lose a samuri to a counter attack

7) 1300 Zulu lose a swordman, we lose a pikeman

8) 1305 Ngome, unhappy with us being at war with her motherland, flips back to Zulu control  We Capture Umfolzi, losing 1 samuri in the attack.

9) 1310 Sistine Chapel built in Kyoto. German and Chinese forces finally start moving through our territory towards the Zulu. Swordsman standing in the mountains is killed by a zulu swordsman

10) 1315 Multiple WLTS days. Aztec's start Leonardo's Workshop. We learn Astronomy, begin researching physics. Kyoto switches to Copernicus's Observatory (22 turns)

11) 1320 We lose 3 swordsman and a samuri, zulus only lose a swordsman

12) 1325 Samuri attacks a swordsman on the plains, and loses  Zulu's and Russians make peace Chinese start lLeonardo's Workshop

13) 1330 Attacking swordsman dies, doing no damage to reg swordsman. Reg swordsman then attacks fortified elite pike, kills it taking no damage. geez.

14) 1335 War weariness is beginning to show up, several cities stop celebrating WLTS days, 2 go into disorder

15) 1340 More minor skirmishes around Sheer's Castle

16) 1345 Physics learned, started Theory of Gravity

17) 1350 Several Zulu swordsman killed, lost samuri in a counter attack

18) 1355 Leonardo's Workshop finished.

19) 1360 Several Zulu swordsmen killed. German cannon fodder finally arrives, after clogging our roads.

20) 1365 Samuris attack stack of Zulu swordsman outside Sheers Castle, and kill none. 1 samuri lost.

Shadowlord, after seeing how ineffective his Samuri's are, steps down from the presidency, muttering something about knowing he should have hired ninja's instead

Alliances with Germany, India, China, and Babylon should end on the first turn, make sure to break them before trying to get peace with the Zulu. Also, we only have contact with 13 other cultures, either 2 got destroyed, or they are on small islands in that blackness. Once we get Navigation, the galley can easily find them, we can make a fortune bying their world map, and selling it to everyone else along with contact to the new races. Or we can probably easily take them over, they haven't been in contact with the other races to trade techs, they should be way behind. We might be able to find salt peter there and wipe our island clean of any undesirables with cavalry.

1370: Made peace with Zululand. Lost gem imports. Made some deals and secured the imports of ivory, incense, gems and something else. Our people now enjoy all luxuries.:) Upped our science rate and ordered new city improvements.

1375: Theory of gravity discovered.

1385: Persia building Copernicus' Observatory. We still need 10 turns for that!

1395: Bach's Cathedral built. New Hamburg joins our country!:)

1400: Our sailors master the techniques of navigation.

1405: Work begun on Magellan's Voyage. Saving Newton's College for the city building Copernicus's Observatory.

Still no saltpeter. None on the market either. I think it is stilll a secret to most civs. When I made my luxury trades many civs wanted chivalry - which I did not give up. If we have a big tech lead then perhaps we should just forget about saltpeter. Eventually we'll be able to make riflemen without it.

Inherited turn Izumo switched from wealth to bank. Satsuma switched from wealth to worker. Negotiated RoPs with everyone that would give me gold per turn for one:

India 7gpt
Rome 1 gpt
America 2 gpt
Aztecs 10 gpt
Babylon 13 gpt
Zulu 17 gpt
Germany 4 gpt

Renegotiated Roman silk trade, now getting 18 gpt
Greece is now giving us 1 gpt + gems for our silks/dyes
America is giving us 68 gpt for wines/furs
Aztecs are giving us 18 gpt for our silks, spices + 7gpt for iron

1) 1510 New Hamburg rushes a courthouse. Massive german-zulu fighting results in a GL for germany

2) 1515 Nationalism learned, Democracy next. Established a picket line from Nagasaki to Nara to prevent german GL from reaching a german city. New Hamburg begins a galleon, Izumi switched to settler, Bizen switched to worker. German units attacked by zulu bowmen army.

3) 1520 Picket line moved to Nagasaki-Steveville. New Hamburg rushes galleon. Germany begins taking losses as Zulu Knights arrive, while their reinforcements are blocked by our picket line.

4) 1525 Galleon loaded with settler, worker, rifleman, and samuri, and sent to island with jungle for better chance for rubber. Picket line moved north in hopes that the zulu will soon kill the german GL. Egypt offers MPP, we decline

13) 1570 Fighting has moved to inside Zulu borders.

14) 1575 The invention of Steam Power has rendered the Hanging Gardens Obsolete. Economics in 4 turns at 60%. 41 pikemen upgraded to riflemen for 2050 gold.

15) 1580 Edo begins constuction of the Iron Works. Shadowville founded, begins temple.

Feb 14, 2002, 12:20 PM
I got the game and will go for another quick 20 turns.

A short report will follow (I hope you don't mind me jumping the gun, Steve ;) )

Dark Sheer
Feb 14, 2002, 05:27 PM
Now that was some solid 20 turns. Here is the summary of what happen during Prime Minister Sheer's rule of Japan:

1605AD - In the dead of the night Dark Sheer slip into Tokugawa's castle. With a katana behind his neck, Tokugawa quickly sign a deed anouncing Dark Sheer as the next Prime Minister of Imperial Japan. Germany and Zululand continues to wage war in our territories. Persian launch a sneak attack on Sheer's Castle! They shall pay for this!

1610AD - Our Samurai at Sheer's Castle retaliate against the Persian Knight. The final score is Japan 10 : Persia 2!! Now the Persians are left with a mere 6 Knights in our territory! Muwahahaha. :D Looks like the Persian has a RoP with the Zulus as their Knights continue to pour through Zululand!

1615AD - The war with Persian rages on near Sheer's Castle as our brave Samurai countinue to take on those Persian knights. The second round is still favorable to us with the score Japan 10 : Persian 4! And a Great Leader, Tojo is born out of the battle! Seeing that the continuos flow of knight can be very dangerous for Japan, a Military Alliance is quickly signed between Japan and Russia and also between Japan and India against the Persian. Now the knights can no longer pass these two countries without a fight! At the same time, the Russian is willing to trade us some saltpeter for the Alliance, Democracy and Economic. Tojo san is rushed to Kyoto and the citizen are so happy to see their leader that the Smith's Trading Company is completed immediately. ;)

1620AD - RoP with Aztec renegotiated and they reduced their payment from 10gpt to 8 gpt. RoP with India is now free since they are helping us against the Persian. And the Alliance works as the remaining Persian Knights are retreating towards their homeland (gotta love those backstabing Russian. A few regiment of Samurai is send after the retreating Knights to help out the Russian and Indian in their war effort while the injured units retreated to Sheer's Castle and Ise for much needed rest. German army continue to pour through Japan in their war against Zululand.

1625AD - With the completion of Smith's our cashflow is once again +24 per turn and keeping above 1000gp waiting for WallStreet's completion. The people of Japan celebrates Sheer's Day in honor of our victory against the Persians. Industrialisation is discovered and Japan is looking into Military Traditions since we now have a source of saltpeter. New Leipzig join the Japanese empire! Science reduce to 70% and still 4 turns for Military Traditions. Surplus is now more than 200gp per turn!

1630AD - Ngome is finally captured by the Germans. Universal Suferrage started in Satsuma.

1635AD - Railroad frenzy continue in Japan. Swazi falls to Germany. If everything goes right both Swazi and Ngome will be part of Japan in the near future due to Culture. ;)

1640AD - Finally caught up with those retreating knights at the Russian border. The result is Japan 5 : Persian 1. We lost 1 Samurai.

1645AD - Military Tradition discovered. Now going for medicine to expand our city. 20 Samurai upgraded to Calvary. Science retained at 70% and Medicine in 6 turns. If we up science to 90% we can get it at 5 turns but loosing about 200gp per turn. Prime Minister Sheer has decided that 200gp is better than a slightly faster research. ;)

1650AD - Iroquis joined Persian in the war against us! Killed a Persian Knight and together with a Persian Leader!(Yup, he was a Great Leader for a few second :D ) Railroad frenzy continue in Japan. Entered into a RoP with Russian.

1655AD - Railroad frenzy continue in Japan.

1660AD - As expected Ngome is now part of Japan empire! A temple is immediately rushed at Ngome since our surplus is now over 250gp. :cooool:

1665AD - Entered into a MPP plus RoP with France. Russian entered into Peace Treaty with Persia and we lost our saltpeter. Oh well, back to Samurai for the moment.

1670AD - A Persian Knight killed one of our Samurai but our Calvary killed the knight.

1675AD - Discovered Medicine and going for sanitation. Our Calvary liberated Sverdlovsk and secured another source of Iron.

1680AD - Railroad frenzy continue in Japan.

1685AD - Our Ironclad finally reaches the shore of Persia and bombardment begins!

1690AD - Nothing unusual happen.

1695AD - Nothing unusual happen.

1700AD - Nothing unusual happen.

1705AD - We liberated Vladivostok and finally have our own supply of saltpeter! We also manage to capture 2 worker and 2 catapult (upgraded to canon). Prime Minister Sheer being satisfied with his rule gladly step down from power.

Osaka is building palace as a place holder for the next wonder (hopefully the Hoover Dam as Osaka is next to a lake). Our military alliance with India should end within 1-2 turns. As far as I know Persian is begging for a peace treaty. So its up to the next leader to decide the next course of action. :cooool:

I spent most of yesterday evening trying to figure out the subtle art of warmongering and diplomacy.

The major problem here is the Germans. Their silly King has their k-niggerts trampling over OUR land (can't remember if we have ROP with them). Taunting them and farting in their general direction (I love Monty Python) didn't do much.

So the situation is this. Germany declares war. We are already at war with the Persians, so my immediate reaction is to try to bring in some allies. So I get China to declare war on Germany and Babylon to declare war on Persia. From my various trials here, it appears that in order to maintain diplomatic relations with my allies, I have now committed myself to 20 turns of war. In Democracy. UGH.

Warmongering is my weakest point, and something I really need to get better at. If there is a warmongering expert in the group, I'd love them to take over this game so that I can see what should be done here.

May drop a note to the guys doing the Emporer level games.

Will give it another go at the weekend after I get over the shock. Until then, consider the game open and go ahead and play.

Stephen.

I believe Stephen is saying that he didn't get a good start so he is going to restart again this weekend and if anyone want to go ahead first please do so. ;)

Anyway, I strongly suggest against going to war with the Germans for anyone who is continuing. By letting Germany continue to wage war on Zulu, we are at an advantage.

1) Germany got no time to develop infra as it continue to make war units
2) Without infra means no culture and that means any captured Zulu city or even German cities will flip to Japan.

I would suggest Japan enter into a peace treaty once the Alliance with India expire (or alternatively continue to push on and grab Dacca from Persia for those Ivory around it ;) ). We have a good lead in tech now and our infra with those factory coming up should give Japan a great edge against Persia. And if I am not mistaken, we should get Infantry and then tank very soon (not to mention flight & airport). With tanks and airport we can roll over almost anyone on our continent. Considering the fact that Persia, Germany and Zululand are still stucked with Knights and Musketman at the moment. :cooool:

That is an unforutunate turn of events. During my turns, whenever someone declared war on us, I would get Germany to declare war on them. As for advice on war, the best advice I can offer is to wage war. There are several different styles, and it all depends on which one suits your playing style. But I can offer some general advice.

First, unless you have a very strong military advantage, don't fight a two front war. Being at war with Germany now puts us in a 2 front war, making things hard for us. With railroads, this disadvantage is lessened somewhat. But it forces us into a defensive fighting position. If we send our cavalry off the railroads into enemy territory on one front, we leave ourselves open on the other front.

Second, decide what kind of war you are going to fight, offensive or defensive. This will not only tell you what kind of units you need to concentrate on, but what kinds of alliances you need. In general, if you are going to fight an offensive fight, ally with people on the other side of you. This will prevent the civ that you are at war with from getting that civ to ally with them, forcing you into a 2 front war. It also makes it much harder for your ally to claim enemy cities that you are trying to get. If you are fighting a defensive war, ally with people on both sides. This prevents a two front war, and if your ally is closer to your enemy than you are, those massive stacks of military units have more pressing matters to deal with than marching all the way into your territory. It is also possible that you won't have to build any units at all and continue building up your infrastructure and gain a huge tech lead while your opponent and ally kill each others military off, forcing them to rebuild it.

Third, look at the strengths of the civilizations that you are at war with and are thinking about allying with. In this case, Persia and Babylon are good examples. The first time Persia declared war on us, I allied with Babylon, who was about the same strength as Persia. Not one persian military unit ever reached us, as those two kept each other busy. But if you look at the territory map, Persia definately came out with a big advantage over Babylon. Now, with Persia so much stronger than Babylon, by forcing the Babs into another war with Persia, they will probably lose alot more ground, strengthening Persia even more, giving them a larger production base and more scientific research later in the game.

Fourth, if fighting a defensive war, always look to end it as soon as possible without breaking alliances, or look to go offensive. Usually, if you take out the first few stacks of enemy units, you have usually crippled the computers offensive punch. Defensive units can become quite powerful in such circumstances. There was a game I was playing a very peaceful role in, and had no chance to get horses. I managed to get infantry before getting drug into a war, and managed to capture several enemy cities defended by infantry by using artillery.

Next comes when to declare war yourself. Even if you are trying to play an extremely peaceful game, this is sometimes necessary. Is there a weak neighbor being ganged up on? You may need to claim a piece of their land just to stop the aggressors from becoming too powerful. Is there a resource that you are lacking? A few turns of war may secure this resource for you, and a quick treaty may end the war before that civ can launch a counterstrike. Also be aware of the major war advances on the tech tree, if you get one before your opponents, this is often the perfect time to strike. First one to knights, cavalry, and tanks often have a huge advantage in a war.

The most important thing of all may be terrain. When fighting offensively with fast units, use the furthest ones back that can move and still attack a city. If they take it, any units that were directly outside the city can now use the roads, and may be able to reach the next city in enemy territory. If you have workers with your invasion force, you may even be able to build railroads to the new cultural border, greatly increasing your mobility. With enough units, it is possible to reach 5 or 6 cities deep into enemy territory like this easily, meaning that their capital may not be safe, no matter how far away it looks at the start of a turn. If fighting defensively, or expecting a counter-attack, always take the highest ground possible. A few well defended cannons on a mountain fortress that a computer invasion force must pass to attack you can greatly decrease the odds of that forces winning chances against your city defenses. If you can get some good defensive units to enemy resources, you can cripple the computers offensive punch. Fortify there, and even if the computer can dislodge you, you have stopped him from building his best units for awhile, and have made him split his forces to retake the resource. Fast units are good for quick runs and pillaging roads to these resources, but usually can't hold them. Ship bombardment is also good for this.

These are just general tips, as each situation is different, practice in your own games, start some games just to get knights, build up a force of them and attack your nearest neighbor, doesn't matter if you win or lose, just get used to them. Or start with the persians, and do the same thing with immortals. Just remember, 1 unit will very seldom take a city, you need stacks of your own. Also, take a look at the RBD threads, they are great at explaining several concepts of the game, from waging warfare to optimizing city selection and production.

I hope that some of this helped, and good luck to you in your future war endeavors :D

Dark Sheer is right - I was intending to have another shot probably Saturday sometime, so if anyone wants to play, they are more than welcome to jump in ahead of me.

Shdwlord - your advice is most helpful and I greatly appreciate the time and effort you put in to help me out. Thank you very much, you have given me some good ideas.

I am an avid follower of the RBD threads, and have come to the conclusion that Sirian and Charis must have enough material there to set up a three year degree course in Civilization III Game Mechanics. I am amazed at the depth of analysis. Unfortunately I don't get enough time to put it into practise, work and girlfriend (she's an ex-beauty queen - VERY distracting  ) combine to thwart any attempts to do so.

Silks to Aztecs increased to 23 gpt + 300 gold. Notes that we are in an MPP with France for another 11 turns, no peace for us for awhile. German army of 4 knights killed. Many other knights feel the wrath of our cavalry, heavy losses on both sides. Workers take cover in cities.
Surviving German knights begin a campaign of road destruction in our land.

1715 Workers begin to connect all cities by rail. All but 2 German knights in our territory are dealt with.
China and Persia sign a trade embargo against us.

1720 Swazi taken from the Germans. The last german knight in our territory gives us the Great Leader Hirohito.
New Leipzig rifleman falls to single german knight

New Cologne defender defeated by single mounted warrior, and the city is burnt to the ground.

1730 War weariness beginning to make its presence felt as several WLTS days are cancelled. Persian horse supply lost due to successful bombardment of ironclads. Our Army defeats a german knight.
Aztecs cancel RoP and 8gpt, renegotiated it to RoP and 6 gpt
England want us to give them 21 gpt for an MPP, I almost laugh. Give them an RoP for their world map instead.

1735 Electricity learned, replacable parts ordered up. Nara begins Hero Epic. Hannover captured.
Russia and Germany sign a trade embargo against us. German cavalry retake Hannover
Rome and Persia sign a military alliance against india. Zulu and Persia sign a trade embargo against us. France and Persia have signed a peace treaty. Chinese knights attack New Leipzig. France declares war on the chinese.

1740 Kyoto begins Military Academy. Isandhlwana captured. New Heidelberg captured.
Babylon and china have signed a military alliance against France.

1745 New frankfurt captured. Germany has riflemen.

1750 German conscript riflemen barely hold Berlin. Persian Immortal kills attacking cavalry?
Iroquois offer peace which is rejected because of our MPP with France. Egypt and China have signed a trade embargo against us. Chinese attack our calvary outside Berlin, driving them back.
France and Germany have signed a peace treaty.
Germany kills our army.
Zulus and Persia sign a military alliance against France.
Persian workers arrive to reconnect their horses.

1752 Combined chinese/german forces drive the rest of our cavalry away from Berlin.

1754 Edo completes Iron Works. Iroquois denied use of salt peter through ironclad bombardment. Persians lose iron do to ironclad bombardment. Peace treaty signed with Germany for their world map, 23 gold, and an RoP. china refused to acknowledge us, and Persia wanted medicine, so we said no.
Combined Iroquois and chinese forces finally overwhelm New Heidelburg's defences.

1756 Nara completes the Hero Epic. Newly completed road to persian horses destroyed. Chinese defenses no match for Japanese cavalry forces at New Heidelburg. Iroquois give us 7 gpt and their world map for peace.

1758 Replacable parts researched, Scientific method began. science at 90% with +7 gpt, SM in 4 turns. We have no rubber. Persia has 4, soon to be 5 sources, as they continue to drive india back. The Roman city of Arretium, next to shadowville, has a nice source of rubber for us, when it flips. China gives us 3 gpt for peace. Persia gives us 3 gpt for peace.
France and Iroquois sign a peace treaty.
Rome and China have signed a military alliance against india.

1760 With the end of the wars, people all over the empire celebrate WLTS day. Satsuma completes Universal Suffrage. The Egpytians have completed Shakespeare's Theater in Thebes.

This seemed like a good place to end my turns, we are once again at peace, but without resources (rubber this time). Germany has some, and now that we aren't at war with everyone on that side of us, we should be able to handle their cavalry easily. Or we could wait for the roman city to flip over to us culturally. Persia is becoming a monster taking over all of india's land, but they are in a monarchy, we should be able to increase our tech lead over the rest of the world. We haven't broken any treaties with anyone, so we still have a shot at a diplomatic victory too.

I have the game.

Hopefully I can keep the peace this time, maybe secure rubber and get us on the way to tanks so we can cut Persia down to size...

This is a major learning experience for me, as I have only rarely played past the middle of the Industrial age (for me it's usually a won or lost thing by the end of the Middle Ages, so I usually start a new game at that point - you guys can flame me if you want  ).

Emphasis will be infrastructure and science. And avoiding wars. :)

Stevos the Meek looked up at his unfamiliar surroundings. It seemed that the people of Japan had selected him to lead them to greatness, and moved his bed into the Royal Palace. With some trepidation he surveyed his land, noting that for the first time everything was peaceful.

He looked at the journal of the now deceased Emporer Shdwlord, and vowed to continue the legacy of that great leader.

A couple of things were noticed. Rubber was available in the Indian lands now conquered by the Persians. If we could get a settler group there quickly enough, we might be able to snag this from under the Persians' noses. However, the most important thing was to maintain the peace we now enjoyed with the rest of the World. The rewards for this would be an unassailable lead in technology, allowing us to build hitherto unknown units with which to assert our authority. Either that or leave the idiots to beat each other up while we head to Alpha Centauri.

*Thinks* I've never researched all the way through the tech tree. Would love to see Stealth Bombers and all that other good stuff.

Inherited turn.
Persia gets America and the Aztecs to sign a Military alliance against France. America and the Aztecs both declare war. We leave them to it. Some of our troops were left in Greek territory. Alexander not too happy, but we comply with his request to move them. A settler is started. He will be shipped to the rubber along with some support troops. Building up defensive military (Riflemen) to deter other nations from declaring war.

(1) 1762AD
LOTS of mining. We sign a Right of Passage with China, but drop their request for Mutual Protection Pact. More defensive units built.

(2) 1764AD
More mining. Defensive troops moved to border cities. Science dropped to 80%. We still get Scientific Method in 1 turn, but save 133 gold. We start researching Atomic Theory on the way to Electronics and the Hoover Dam. A mix of defensive military and infrastructure units are started. Size 12 (and growing) cities start hospitals. Osaka begins Theory of Evolution. We will try to trade or research Communism, Espionage and the Corporation in the hope of getting some decent advances from ToE.

(3) 1766AD
More Railroading/Mining. China and France sign a peace treaty. More hospitals started in size 12 cities.

(4) 1768AD
Egypt and Rome sign Mutual Protection Pact. Lost track of the number and variety of things complated in many cities. High emphasis on factories and hospitals for current building projects.

(5) 1770AD
Steveville production changed to palace as a placeholder for Hoover Dam. More things built and started with a very heavy emphasis on infrastructure improvements now.

(6) 1772AD
Greece and Persia sign Military Alliance against India - Greece declare war. Pollution starts to appear near a couple of cities. Tokyo starts battlefield medicine. A couple of Coastal Fortresses started, there is simply nothing left to build!

(7) 1774AD
Isandhlwana borders expand and we get a new source of iron. Worker chain gangs are formed and pile onto the pollution, clearing it the same turn. Kyoto begins to build an army. Many places are running out of infrastructure to build, so I put them on wealth, pending new advanves and new projects.

(8) 1776AD
Zulu capital is razed by Germans. Besides there being less cultural pressure for our border cities, there is space for our fortified settlers to head to. Greeks ask for Right of Passage AND Mutual Protection Pact. We give them Right of Passage. Their treasury is BROKE!! Muhahaha!!! India and China sign a peace treaty.

(9) 1778AD
Settler sent to gap where Zulu capital was. He is accompanied by a Rifleman. Persia and China end their trade embargo against us. Aztecs and Egypt sign a Mutual Protection Pact. Egypt declares war on Greece.

(10) 1780AD
Steveopolis (sorry - second offence) founded on top of the former Zulu capital. Science is backed off to to 60% - we still net Atomic Theory in 2 turns, but save ourselves mucho Goldo! India and Germany form Military Alliance against Zulu. Another settler is grabbed and sent out to claim more land for us. The Zulu and Persians end their trade embargo against us. Not that this matters much, as the Zulu are completely annihilated this turn.
More places run out of infrastructure to build. I set them to wealth temporarily.

(11) 1782AD
India is completed wiped off the face of the Earth by the Persians. We learn Atomic Theory and start Electronics. Rome declares war on France. Begins to look like the vultures are circling there now.

(12) 1784AD
Science cranked up to 90% to get Electronics in 7 turns. We are running a slight deficit of 24 gold per turn. Germany and America sign a Military Alliance against France and Germany declares war. More vultures. Pollution strikes again.

(13) 1786AD
All pollution cleaned up by worker stacks. Omi is founded in former Zulu territory. Aztecs and France sign a peace treaty. Russia and Germany end their trade embargo against us. New Ulundi (formerly Zulu) overthrows their German conquerers and joins the great Japanese Empire!! A temple is ordered to celebrate the occasion.

(14) 1788AD
We get Communism in exchange for Sanitation from Babylon. That's one less crappy tech we'll get from the Theory of Evolution. They wanted a military alliance against the French, which I vetoed of course.

(15) 1790AD
All cities which were on wealth begin building police stations. Science is backed down to 80%. We gain gold while still reaching Electronics in 4 turns. Babylon and China end their trade embargo against us. I watch in amusement as drunken German cavalry wander in circles around our borders. Must be Oktoberfest over there.

(16) 1792AD
Egypt and China end their trade embargo against us. Russia and China sign a Mutual Protection Pact.

(17) 1794AD
Micromanagement around Steveville to maximize production. Palace time reduced from 20 to 14 turns. This remains a placeholder for the Hoover Dam. Persia and France sign a Peace Treaty.

(18) 1796AD
Electronics still comes to us in 1 turn with the science backed down to 50%. We net an extra 500 Gold! We extend our peace treaty with Germany for another 20 turns. My Military adviser warns me about German backstabbing. Electronics learned. I switch to Espionage in 4 turns, the plan being to be researching the Corporation when we get Theory of Evolution, so that we'll get decent advances from it. Battlefield medicine is completed in Tokyo.

(19) 1798AD
Palace placeholder in Steveville is switched to Hoover dam. We'll get it in 9 turns. Science to 70% to get espionage in 4 turns with maximum profits. Now running a huge surplus in gold. We extend Peace Treaty with Iriquois.

(20) 1800AD
Continued mining/railroading.

Some Notes:
a) Hoover dam due in Steveville in 8 turns
b) Theory of Evolution due in Osaka in 4 turns
c) We have our first army!! Woohoo!! I loaded two cav and a rifle in there. He's sitting quietly next to Steveopolis.
d) We are committed to peace with Germany and Iroquois for 20 turns. Just wait till we get tanks.
e) Treasury has doubled due to micromanagement of science rate. Now at 4462.
f) Settler, Cav and Rifle in Galleon next to Nicomedia (Rome) at NE of persia landmass with Ironclad escort. Thought this guy might get round to the rubber in Persia before my turn ended. Damn those ships are S-L-O-O-O-W! That rubber is still available, East of Delhi.

1806: Espionage techniques devised. JIA (Japanese Intelligence Agency) begun in Tokyo. Pressed 'f' key 84 times.:(

1808: Thoery of Evolution formulated by great Japanese scientists who also perfect the refining of oil. Japanese businessmen form corporations. There is pollution in our republic!:(

1810: Not much happened. I tried building a city in the northern jungle between to German cities. Every time I tried it my darn computer locked up.:(

SummerStorm steps quietly into the throne room and immediately crashes into a pyramid of empty beer cans which fall over onto a pile of empty pizza boxes. She silently surveys the destruction caused by the rampageing hordes of males and thinks to herself, I've been gone way to long :p

1- 1812 Echigo founded on an inherited turn, temple construction started immediatly and workers sent to clear the surrounding jungle. In other news, Egypt & France declare peace, while Rome & the Aztecs form an MPP.
I settle back to clean up the minor messes left around the palace when I'm informed that Persia is feeling cocky and declares war on us. So much for a peaceful mission. We sink a Persian galleon.

2-1814 Not wanting to hog all the glory in this war, I entice Babylon & Russian to join the party on our side. We give them both silks in the deal but it looks like we have plenty. I unearth the throne from beneath a pile of laundry :sigh:

3- 1816 China joins in the fun vs Persia on thier own. Our people thrilled at the removal of 99 bottles of beer from the walls of the Palace present us with an upgrade  a new room is constructed & decoreated in early american dorm room in hopes that the chaos can be at least partly confined :p

4 1818- Much production is turned over from wealth to Cavs

5-1820- cont building up of our offensive units

6-1822- Tokyo completes the Intel. Agency. Science is kicked down to 70%without losing turns. Iroquois & Persia form a Trade Embargo against us, France & Rome make peace.

7- 1824

8-1826 We capture Murmansk & Tarenrum, Persia is now allied with the Aztecs vs China & Gemany vs Babylon.

9-1828 Persia burns Murmansk

10- 1830 We gain a leader Fujiwara who is killed by before we even got to know him. Persia takes back Tarentum

11 1832 Sadly I am unable to continue at this time we remain at war with Persia. We also have an MPP with Russia, I'm not sure when we picked that up, forgot to write it down :o sorry :)

I manage to grab the game and played a few interesting turns. Below is a summary of what happen with the war during Dark Sheer's second term as the Prime Minister. ;)

1852AD - Pre turn. Iroquis and Persia entered into Alliance against China. Calvary outside Bunyan killed by Persian Calvary. France and American entered into Peace Treaty. Infantry outside Eburacum attacked our Calvary and our Calvary is victorious. :)

1854AD - Killed off a few strayed Persian units. Japanese armies moving towards Bunyan, Samaria & Samarra. Persian Calvary attacked Larsa and killed two of our infantry.

1856AD - Successfully captured Buyan after loosing 4 Calvary (in exchange for 4 Persian Infantry) and captured 3 workers and one canon. Japanese armies continue to move towards Samaria and Samarra. Persian lost a few calvaries in their counter attack. No unit is lost on the Japanese side. Greece declare war on Romans. Egypt declare war on the Romans.

1858AD - Japanese army successfully capture Eburacum after the defense has been weaken by the Greek. Other Japaness army groups continue to move towards their respective targets with the newly formed tank regiments rushing forward to support them. China and Egypt enter into Peace Treaty.

1860AD - The Russian town of Tiflis join the glorious Japanese empire and is promptly renamed Sheer's Glory. Samarra captured after loosing 1 tank regiment to the defending infantries. Persian city of Malkop captured. Lost 1 infantry and 1 tank to Persian counter attack.

1862AD - Samaria captured after loosing 1 Tank and 1 Calvary regiment. Japanese army group push towards Astrakhan. Egypt enter into embargo against us with the Persian. Russian & Egyptian enter into a Peace Treaty.

1864AD - Assault on Astrakhan begin. Japanese army groups moving towards Ghulaman & Arbela. Sink a Persian Ironclad with our Battleship. American and Aztec enter into alliance against Russian.

1866AD - Astrakhan fell to Japanese military might and 7 workers are captured. New leader obtained from the battle and immediately a new tank army is formed at Astrakhan. The newly formed tank army moves towards Ganges. Sink a Persian Frigate. Assault on Ghulaman begin. Persian lost several calvaries in their counter attack. American and Greece enter in alliance against Romans. Persian and England enter into a Peace Treaty.

1868AD - Japanese inventor discovered the flying machine. Airport is immediately being ordered all around Japan. Research on Radio ordered. Japanese army succeeded in capturing Arbela after loosing a few Calvary regiments to the defending infantries. Assault on Ghulaman continued. Aztec and Egypt enter into alliance against Rome. Germany & America enter into alliance against Russia.

1870AD - Sado founded on Ivory. Assault continued on various Persian cities without much success.

We have a number of tanks in reserve as the route to the front line is being blocked by some German calvary and workers enroute to their cities. If these reserves can be send to the battlefield then there is nothing to stop the Japanese military might. Russian left about 5 cities and loosing badly to both Romans and Persia. We are now quite a distant away from Romans and no battle happen for the last few turns. My suggestion would be to take all those former Indian cities as there will be less ressistance as most of the citizens are Indians. With that there are also less chance of these cities flipping back to Persia. I think I have over extend our frontline a little as the Persian always launch their counter attack on a few cities (Then again this might not be a bad idea as there will not be a one big stack kind of counter attack ;) ) Good luck to the next Shogun!

Preturn:

After reviewing the state of our empire I decide that war weariness is our biggest concern. If we want to continue our war with Persia, we need more luxuries and/or more income to raise our entertainment tax. The only civ that can trade us a luxury is the Aztecs who have spices available. The will give us spices, and 30+ gpt for Atomic Theory. I hate to trade away techs at this point in the game but we do have a significant tech lead so this might not be so bad. It does appear that we could get some good cities from Persia in the next few turns. Especially attractive is Lahore with six ivory. After reviewing our military force vs Persia's I decide we should try to continue our war at this time before they get tanks and are a more formidable opponent.

I trade Atomic Theory to Aztecs and get spices, wm, 32 gpt and 370 gold
I then sell AT to every other civ that has anything to offer and get a total of 423 gpt and 1,263 gold. That helps :)
I use our new income to raise entertainment tax to 20% which should put most of our productive cities into WLTS day. We are still making 324 gpt which will help pay for rushing of some temples.

I notice our MPP and military alliance versus Persia with Russia have run their course. I decide to cancel them so we have more flexibility in ending our war with Persia without having any hits to our reputation. Plus we were giving them silks as part of the agreements.

I sell ivory to Greece for 46 gpt.

I change production of Umfolozi from bank to colosseum to help with happiness, will then build a hospital as we are stuck at size 12.
Steveopolis and Omi production switched from bank to worker. We need more workers.
Sverdlovsk production switched from hospital to marketplace. With growth and further war weariness this is a real unrest threat without the marketplace happiness bonus.

(1) 1872AD
Joan would like us to enter a MPP and RoP with France. I don't see any benefit to us and decline. I send her on her way.
Germany founds a city, New Bremen, on our rail network between our main productive cities and our war front. And then they leave a cavalry unit and settler on the only alternative route.
Our palace is expanded.

I rush all of the temples under construction at a total cost of about 1,000 gold. We still have a treasury of over 2,200.
While taking Ganges a GL, Tojo, is created.

(2) 1874AD
Germany and Persia sign a military alliance against China
Germany declares war on China
Persians take back our weakly defended Ganges.
Abe wants a military alliance against the Russians. I don't see any advantage to this and decline his offer.
We retake Ganges

(3) 1876AD
Iroquois and Persia sign a military alliance against us.
Iroquois declare war on us.
Greece wants us to give them our wm and combustion for their wm, I decide against it :)
Rome and China sign peace treaty.
Aztecs and China sign a peace treaty.
Rush the temple in Ganges.
Take the Persian city of Bactra losing 2 tanks and a cavalry unit.
Sink a Roman ironclad and caravel.

My computer is just too slow for this game, it is too frustrating for me. I thought upgrading my RAM to 256M might help with huge maps but I guess not.

Great leader, Tojo, is in Kyoto, I was thinking of keeping him to rush the production of United Nations. This might not be necessary due to our large tech lead. The infantry fortified on the rail line near New Bremen are to keep the Germans from blocking our only route to the Persian front. They have been leaving troops on that line and blocking our troops being moved to the front.

I played 11 turns and here is the summary:

1876AD(0) - Pre-turn

1878AD(1) - Dacca captured. Persia lost a number of Cavalry in counter-attack.

1880AD(2) - Smolensk captured. Egypt declare war on us due to MPP with Persia.

1884AD(4) - Altin Tepe captured. Entered into MPP with Russia (Not that it matters as Russian is left with 1 city on an Island).

1886AD(5) - Lahore captured! Bangalore falled! Ura Tyube falled! This feels really like a domino...hehe Sardis falled! Russian destroyed by Aztec.

1888AD(6) - Railroad frenzy and wiping out Persian cavalries that comes into Japanese land. Entered into Peace Treaty with Roman.

1890AD(7) - Ghulaman captured.

1892AD(8) - Bombay & Delhi falled.

1894AD(9) - Athribis falled. Karachi falled. Calcatta liberated.

1896AD(10) - Bengal liberated.

1898AD(11) - Moscow liberated. New Madras & Indus liberated.

That was some fun turns. In fact, there is still lots more fun to go around in this game. While we are pretty near to the 100,000 culture point, I doubt that we are going to win by culture as greek has pretty high points on the histograph. However, our military might is no match and its up to the next person to decide if we want to clear out Persian or make peace. We are still behind Persia on score on the Histogram but I think this is already a sure win. ;)

Hmmm.... I wonder, have we hit the # of cities limit?
I must have played this as sometime - I have a town with my name.
War with Egypt, Persia, Iroquois - My, My we are busy.
#1 problem - extend the railnet toward the front lines!

Massive wake up the troops - way to many units with excess city defense.
I find enough sleeping tanks / calvary to take Pune (Persia), Skann (Iroq), Uralsk (Persia).
I almost complete my first objective before starting my first official turn ;)
I city left to close the southern block, and shorten our lines.
Start working on the northern cities, Kiohero (Iroq), New Calcultta (Persian), Owego (Iroq).
OUCH! Greece allies with Persia vs. US - I join in time for a mess.
Then Persia wants to talk to us!

1900 AD - I can tell this is a hugh map, even with an 833mz, it takes a about 5 minutes between
turns.
We take Kente (Iroq), Kawauka (Iroq), New Bangalore (Persia), Chittagon (Persia)
Stupid Iroqoius still won't talk.
New Kyoto is formed - taking away the German SaltPeter Colony.
Start a small airlift, I see where to punish the Greeks.
The annoying Egyptians want US to pay them for a peace treaty.
Time for trading - Ivory to Rome for $22/turn. Silks to Rome for $22/turn.
Ivory to Aztecs for $32/turn.
I give Egypt $50 for peace - worth it to help with War Weariness.

1902 AD - Wa take Jaipur (Persia)
Madras (Persia) falls - We now have single front vs. Persia.
New Osaka is formed.
We RAZE Pasagrade, sorry size 12 will have to much happy problems.
Will the Iroqoius EVER talk to us?
Border expansions wipe out a German Iron Colony.

1904 AD - We take Kolhapur (Persia - size 2), Tegea (Greek - size 5), Eridu (Persia - size 7, 4

resiters)
We raze Tarsus (Persia - size 9)
I clean up a bunch of calvary near Ura Tyube, just 1 dead calvary.
Neo-Tokyo is formed.

Summary - Well only 3 turns, but...
I captured 10+ cities.
We will kick Greece of the islands in the next few turns.
We crossed 100,000 culture - So even city we can get will help with building a larger culture gap.

I generally don't like giving up techs for luxuries.
Unless the situation is critical -
50% luxuries and war weariness won't calm down -
I wouldn't do it.

I would try offering gold per turn and see if you can get it reasonable.

Good advice :goodjob: It took a couple of turns but I got spices for gold. I think any thing less than 10% of income is reasonable. Especially since income should increase. :D
Actually, I got the spices for a lot less, counting the other trades I made, it was almost break even.

Upon assuming the mantel of power, I find that the job done by the prevoius Shogun was so good that I have nothing to do.

preturn - I leave everything the way it is and begin ...
The Iroquois want peace, I ask for the towns of New Salamanca & Onnotore, they refuse the offer.

1906 - Our armies capture and raze New Salamanca, Onnotore is liberated from the evil Iroquois and added to our empire. Iroquois pay us 100 gold for peace.
Ur is liberated and added to our empire. arrrggggg lots of unhappiness in Ur from abuses by the Persians & maybe even the Babylonians. So much for trying to add cities to the empire, I guess it is just raze and build.
Nirevan captured and razed. New Edo founded.

Much time spent assigning workers tasks of mining, road & rail building etc. :(

preturn - Umata & New Hanover leave the harsh rule of Bismarck and join our enlightened empire.
We learn the secrets of computers, the PC is invented, worker productivity is halved. Our scientists fall under the spell of Sid Meier and decide to study Ecology. I do not immediately switch Kyoto to SETI (seems like the waste of many shields to rush build) Kyoto will finish army by 1914.

1908 - Apollonia (greek) liberated and added to empire. Only Londinium left on island.
Charsadda captured and added to our empire.
New Kayoshima founded. I have advisor killed for suggesting they build a swordsman.
A lot of troop movement.
Many infantry upgraded to mobile infantry.
Spend more time with workers than with troops.

preturn - I keep science rate low to get gold for upgrading infantry.
Aztec's stop sending us spices. They want flight and/or oil. No deal.

1910 - Londinium (greek) captured and added to empire. Island cleared of Greek presence.
Antioch falls, New Nara founded in its ashes. Zohak & Susa razed. New Nagoyen founded.
Upgrade most of the remaining infantry to mobile infantry, only miss those not in a barracks.
Spend much time telling workers what jobs they should be doing.

post/pre turn - I make the diplo rounds looking for luxuries. Ivory to America for 43 gpt. Silk to china for 7 gpt. I talk to Aztec's about spices, they still demand flight and/or oil. No deal, instead I renegotiate out silk trade with them, we now get 50 gpt ( was 34). :D
Caesar asks for a MPP, I turn him down.

1912 - Gordium falls. Sidon captured and added to empire. New Nagasaki founded. Troop movements preparing for next push. These worker classes are idiots, they need too much direction, they steal valuable time from planning how to crush the Persian.

preturn - Adjust science & luxury spending to keep the people happy, since no new luxuries.
A few cities fall into disorder (seems like war weariness is starting to really kick in).

1914 - Kyoto builds an army. SETI is started and our great leader sacrifices himself to finish the project next turn.
Bampur & Kendaher added to our empire. Our troops fine efforts are rewarded by the appearance of the great leader Hirohito.
Several small towns built for our armies' camp followers.
Armies are moved into position to crush Persoplis. Many decisions to make on the mundane affairs of our workers.

preturn - Trade iron to America for 115 gpt. Greece gives us 40 gold for a peace treaty. Get spices from the Aztec for 135 gpt.
:)
Adjust science spending up & luxury spending down.
New Cologne leaves Bismarck and joins us. Global warming hits (and we had no pollution at end of 1914).

1916 - The artillery bombardment of Persepolis begins, the city is reduced to 1 citizen, our armies attack. The Oracle is ours.
On other fronts, Dakjaurs & Hamaden are razed. More camps for our followers built.

1918 - Japanese people revolt, anarchy reigns. The new Persian capital of Ergili is razed, capital moved to Tureny Tepe. Our spies tell us that 3 Persian cities remain, 2 are on our continent, our armies are marching toward both of them.

1920 - We are a democracy again. Turney Tepe captured and razed.

1922 - The ungrateful people of Arbela rebel and join the Persians.
Again the Japanese people revolt and anarchy reigns (sigh, I guess war weariness really has caught up.)

The Shogun is not pleased. Arbela is razed and a fine Japanese village is build upon its rubble. Workers remaining from Arbela are sacrificed (disbanded) to help build a temple in the new town.

Meru, the last Persian city on the continent is destroyed. Every Persian worker the Shogun finds is sacrificed to help the empire.

His people have revolted twice, there is only one way to restore his honor: Seppuku

Jersey Joe
Apr 07, 2002, 12:17 PM
There is 1 Persian town left, New Pasargadae, it is on an island NE of the Romans. It will take 7-8 turns to just get troops there.

We are in anarchy, who ever is next will come out at start of turn. I left it like this so you can deside on the type of government. Xeres will make peace, if you want.

I have several cities building settlers and have started to use tanks and infintry to block the shores from vultures.

I got a lot of workers from the cities I was disbanding and now I think that there are to many. I started to just disband them for the shields to build temples.

Here is the game:

1922AD(0) - Pre-turn
1924AD(1) - Japan is known as the most powerful nation in the world. As if we do not know that. Fortified most unit and Japan is once again a Democracy. A transport is loaded with units and heading for the last Persian City. England & America signed alliance against France. China & Greece signed peace treaty. We politely decline England's request for a MPP.
1926AD(2) - Sheer's Throne founded. Japanese people refuse to accept Democracy rule, a secret ballot has been cast to elect a new emperor. Neo Nippon founded to fill in the gaps.
1928AD(3) - Democratic supporters burned on stakes. A new Heavenly Emperor is choosen to guide the people of Japan. Greece and Aztec alliance against Rome.
1930AD(4) - Busy chasing pollutions. France & America sign peace treaty. German vultures settle on the tip of ex-persian land. England & Greece alliance against Rome.
1932AD(5) - Busy chasing pollutions. Navy admiral was hanged in the public as the troop ship enroute to Persia Island is still on the high sea after 8 years! Egypt and Greece alliance against Rome.
1934AD(6) - Busy chasing pollutions. Japanese forces landed on Persian Shore.
1936AD(7) - Busy chasing pollutions. Rome & American alliance against China.
1938AD(8) - Busy chasing pollutions. Persian destroyed! The Japanese people is so happy that they stampeed their new emperor in the celebration. France & Greece alliance against Rome. American & Rome alliance against Egypt.
1940AD(9) - Busy chasing pollutions. Japan is once again a Democracy due to the lost of their last emperor. American & Aztec signed MPP. American declare war on Rome.
1942AD(10) - Busy chasing pollutions.
1944AD(11) - Busy chasing pollutions. Egypt & France signed Peace Treaty. Aztec & Germany alliance against France. Aztec & Germany alliance against China.
1946AD(12) - Busy chasing pollutions.
1948AD(13) - Busy chasing pollutions. Discovered Ecology and now heading for Fission.
1950AD(14) - Busy chasing pollutions. Chinese destroyed by the Germans.
1951AD(15) - Busy chasing pollutions. Bapedi join the glorious Japanese empire.
1952AD(16) - Busy chasing pollutions. Germany & Egypt alliance against Rome. Intombe join the glorious Japanese empire. Aztec declare war on Egypt
1953AD(17) - Busy chasing pollutions. England & France signed Peace Treaty. German & Aztec alliance against Egypt.
1954AD(18) - Busy chasing pollutions.
1955AD(19) - Busy chasing pollutions.
1956AD(20) - Busy chasing pollutions.

There is nothing much to do except building railroads and clearing pollutions. I have dedicated about 4 cities to build bomber and then rebase these bomber to the remote cities to disband them and help building those temples. If this is continued we should win by culture very soon. ;) Btw, the leader is still in Kyoto waiting to rush UN.
