grs Mar 16, 2006, 11:48 AM It seems the password is md5 hashed (that's a form of encryption). Normally you enter your password, then it gets encrypted and the encrypted form is compared to the encrypted password in the database. There seems to be a bug that encrypts the already encrypted password again if you open the options dialog. I give an example:
Your pass is "my_password".
The md5 hashed version would be "a865a7e0ddbf35fa6f6a232e0893bea4".
If you open the options page the game enters "a865a7e0ddbf35fa6f6a232e0893bea4" as your password and encrypts it again, so it will be "14a9b33303b23bd087a7d32d911fc49a".
You can get a utility to md5-encrypt your password here http://www.fourmilab.ch/md5/
In the above example you would open up a command line and enter md5 -l -d"my_password". It will give you the string "a865a7e0ddbf35fa6f6a232e0893bea4" which you have to enter as your password in civ4.
I found this information somewhere in this forum, but can't re-find the thread now.
Tubby Rower Mar 16, 2006, 11:54 AM very interesting. I guess if you do it twice you would have use the 14...... number.... dare I try it :mischief:
DaveMcW Mar 16, 2006, 11:54 AM If my password got changed to a 32-character string of random numbers and letters, I would ask to be kicked even if I knew what it was!
grs Mar 16, 2006, 11:58 AM @Dave: Well, I just copied it to a notepad file :)
BCLG100 Mar 16, 2006, 01:22 PM could you explain your previous post again in as basic terms as possible as i have no idea what you just said
Tubby Rower Mar 16, 2006, 01:28 PM He copied the encrypted password to a notepad file... Sorry I can't dumb it down any more ;)
What is happening is basically [civ4] encrypts the encryption so that your new password is the encryption of your original password..... sorry that didn't work either
grs Mar 16, 2006, 01:42 PM It is hard to explain in simple words, but I'll try.
If you enter a password in any program or website for the first time it has to be stored/saved somewhere. This is usually done with an encrypted version of the password. A simple form of encryption would be to change all characters to the next one in the alphabet so "hello" would become "ifmmp" (h=i, e=f, l=m, o=p). MD5 is a different, much more complex form of encryption, but that should not bother us now.
Once you have to enter your password for the second time the following happens:
a) you enter "hello"
b) it gets encrypted to "ifmmp", by the formula above
c) it is compared to the stored encrypted version of the password, which is again "ifmmp" (see above)
You may find that complicated. Why is the password encrypted before the storage and comparison? The reason is security. In complex encryption formulas it is not possible to reverse the encryption. That means you can't derive the unencrypted "hello" from the encrypted "ifmmp", like you could above. Hard to imagine? - Just trust me! :)
DaveMcW Mar 16, 2006, 01:47 PM In addition to being inconvenient, this double-encryption bug is also a security flaw.
Anyone can examine an old save game to find my encrypted password. If it ever gets double-encrypted, they will now have my "real" password.
BCLG100 Mar 16, 2006, 03:01 PM Ah right k, could that have been what happened to me earlier in the game then? as it didnt allow me to play even though i put my password back in and didnt look where i wasnt meant too.
Matrix Mar 16, 2006, 04:56 PM Anyway.
BCLG100, Russia (Peter) is still available. ;)
Robi D Mar 16, 2006, 07:40 PM Well here is my first spoiler, hopefully i done it right as its the first one i've every done. As from previous discussion people involved with the game should not look, as for the rest of you enjoy. Any questions/comment can be PM'ed to me :)
I must say given the quality of the opposition in this game i never expected to be doing so well, but as you can see i had a fantastic starting location. I've run into a lot of other civs so far and developed a couple good relationships.
I've met in order, Meleager (Rome), Hatshepsut-AI (Egypt), Sigma (America), Peter-AI (Russia), Mauer (Spain), Whomp (England), Matrix (Persia) and DaveMcW (Mongolia).
Of these Meleager and Whomp look very promising for future trading. Find Matrix near Meleager and myself has made us both nervous given the fact his a fantastic player and were umm... average. So weve both agreed that he is public enemy number one for us. Hopefully both of our early UU will give us the advantage.
With respect to research, now that i have a couple of willing trading partner i'm heading from alphabet so i can make a few tech swaps.
I had delayed a bit with the worker as i wanted to get a few units up and running first so there was no chance of an early exit. Once he is done i can do a couple of forest chops to get the expansion underway. There is a juicy city site just west of me in the hills with both stone and copper a couple of squares from each other (you just see it on the edge of the screenshot) so i'm heading off their first before anyone else gets ideas.

Edit- Sorry, i thought the image would come out bigger, maybe someone can help me
Tubby Rower Mar 17, 2006, 05:59 AM Just for future reference, The stuff inside the spoiler tags was emailed to me due to my subscription to this thread. Others might have inadvertantly read it. After I realized that it was your spoiler stuff I deleted that email.
You can always start a Spoiler Thread in the [civ4] MP (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=160) forum then provide a link here. If you do, make sure that your title says something about this game and your name so people don't accidentally look. Just to let you guys know.
DaveMcW Mar 17, 2006, 06:37 PM Right now I can connect to DaveShack, but I time out contacting peer.
So whoever the bad peer is, please log off or open the port on your firewall!
Edit: Ok, I'm in now.

Or you can just wrap quote tags around it... like this:
So that it won't be emailed.
Matrix Mar 18, 2006, 06:22 PM Connection timed out.
Tubby Rower Mar 18, 2006, 06:38 PM I got in ok
Furiey Mar 18, 2006, 07:36 PM It's working now, DS had to reboot and needed to restart it.
Is someone using ports 27900/27901 rather than 2056 as I've just had to open those ports or it got stuck on contacting peer?
There's a couple of hours left before the turn ends though.
Mauer Mar 22, 2006, 09:16 AM Oh, here's my spoiler
[No tags needed] I suck [/No tags needed]
robboo Mar 22, 2006, 09:22 AM Hey you copied my spoiler.... you must have read it.;) :D
Mauer Mar 22, 2006, 11:43 AM Oh, was I not supposed to?...:crazyeye:
robboo Mar 23, 2006, 06:43 AM Timed out again... 7am central
grs Mar 23, 2006, 06:54 AM The IP is not reachable.
DaveShack Mar 23, 2006, 09:22 AM Yeah, my work connection was also dead when I got up this morning. Reset the router, should be available now.
robboo Mar 23, 2006, 09:28 AM Hey Dave...I dont have a clue about IP address or anything but i saw this thread and thought you might want to look at it.
The email thing( post #5) might be a good option if your IP keep switching IP addresses.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=164271
DaveShack Mar 23, 2006, 09:37 AM The above issue also hung pitboss, and it had to be restarted from the 2400 BC autosave.
It might not be the IP switching, it acts like I have no connection at all from this end, until I reset everything.
grs Mar 23, 2006, 12:06 PM No it is not ip-switching, since the IP always stays the same (at least since I joined a few days ago).
Tubby Rower Mar 23, 2006, 12:08 PM it had to be restarted from the 2400 BC autosave
How many turns ago was that?
robboo Mar 23, 2006, 12:22 PM loooks like none...
I was actually finish building what I thought I would be doing during this turn.
BCLG100 Mar 23, 2006, 01:27 PM Strangely my game has started working again, so whoevers met me i can finally talk again! :D
Whomp Mar 23, 2006, 02:20 PM BTW have we established any rules as far as trading? Is it anything goes or no tech discussion till alpha?
robboo Mar 23, 2006, 02:36 PM Tech trading after alpha. But can you talk about it? I see 2 trains of thought...one its just talking about it since you need a "written" ( alphabet) document to transfer knowledge. OR you cant talk about it because in the single player game you cant.
I think we should be able to talk about it....if anything you might be able to bluff someone into thinking you are weaker or stronger than what you are... Just like thye do in the game when they say "fear my archer" or what ever.
grs Mar 23, 2006, 02:38 PM Talking seems ok to me to. Let's just use the game restrictions.
BCLG100 Mar 23, 2006, 02:52 PM I think talking should be fine, because you obviously cant trade them until alphabet anyways.
GeorgeOP Mar 23, 2006, 04:33 PM Talking's fine? Ok, everyone needs to fear the 10 Modern Armors I have ;)
DaveMcW Mar 23, 2006, 06:30 PM Ingame, you can't see what techs everyone has until Alphabet. I think that should apply to discussions as well.
DaveShack Mar 23, 2006, 07:04 PM Clearly tech trading would not be possible until Alphabet, but what about making agreements to work on different things?
One thing that should be limited, is (formal) contact only with players you've met in the game.
Tubby Rower Mar 23, 2006, 08:52 PM One thing that should be limited, is (formal) contact only with players you've met in the gamecorrect DS... But can I tell Whomp that when I find him .... he's dead? or is that off limits. cause Whomp should fear my worker!!!
I can see both sides to the Alpha arguement. I'm ambivilent on the issue. But until it is posted here "Thou shalt be able to jibber on about brainy stuff" I'll keep my mouth shut on techs until I (or the person I'm talking to) reaches Alpha.
Whomp Mar 23, 2006, 09:25 PM But can I tell Whomp that when I find him .... he's dead?It may happen before you meet me! :D
Like open borders I think techs should not be discussed till alpha.
BCLG100 Mar 24, 2006, 11:23 AM So how are we going to decide this or are we just all going to wait until alohabet and let it decide itself?
robboo Mar 24, 2006, 11:25 AM So how are we going to decide this or are we just all going to wait until alohabet and let it decide itself?
Alohabet...nice... I think our team can use that....
grs Mar 24, 2006, 11:48 AM I can live with both versions, but I really see no harm to talk about techs before alphabet. Denying it, would imho force some artificialness on contacts and chat.
Clearly, I agree with no contact out of the game before meeting ingame.
Matrix Mar 24, 2006, 02:09 PM Ingame, you can't see what techs everyone has until Alphabet. I think that should apply to discussions as well.
Which is exactly why I suggested it a few pages ago. :)
Robi D Mar 25, 2006, 08:14 AM Personally i don't see a problem discussing techs and open border before you have the techs that make them available with someone you met. The fact is you still can't do these trades until someone discovers writing and alphabet (I suppose currency too since it lets you exchange gold in the deals). Also i see it as taking a big risk unless you REALLY trust the person, because if you set your research path so you can maximise a trade with someone, there is nothing to stop them changing their minds when it comes time to swap leaving you without key techs in the process (personally i'm not that nasty:), well usually anyway;) ). To talk about trade possiblities does add a bit of spice in my opinion, because there is no certainty in the talks being sucessful and lets face it how many over you would trust someone enough to switch your research proirities over on someones word they will honor the "hand shake" agreement when the time comes, especially so considering no one wants to be the first player to "voted off the island" (sorry for the bad survivor pun:D ). However if the majority of opinions is to not allow tech/open borders/map etc. trade talks until the available technology is available then i am happy to stick to it.
grs Mar 25, 2006, 08:41 AM It seems we are quite undecided, if I count the "votes" right for zalking about techs pre alpha.
yes: 4 (roboo, grs, bclg100, Robi D)
no: 3 (DaveMcW, Whomp, Matrix)
We should decide soon imho. What about setting a deadline for the vote 2 days from now and then take the majority?
UnitQ Mar 25, 2006, 09:06 AM I would love to join this fine group, but my pitboss wount work  its in the main civ4 folder but when i try to start it, it sais this
The application has failed to start because boost_python-vic-1_32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem
I did reinstall it, but it still wount work :(
Tubby Rower Mar 25, 2006, 09:35 AM UnitQ... You don't need Pitboss.. you just need to open Civ4... Multiplayer Menu... Direct IP... and then type in the IP address 68.63.191.219.
Select a civ that hasn't been taken, pick a password and take over from the AI.
Mauer Mar 25, 2006, 10:55 AM It seems we are quite undecided, if I count the "votes" right for zalking about techs pre alpha.
yes: 4 (roboo, grs, bclg100, Robi D)
no: 3 (DaveMcW, Whomp, Matrix)
We should decide soon imho. What about setting a deadline for the vote 2 days from now and then take the majority?
I vote no as well.
robboo Mar 25, 2006, 11:56 AM can I be considered an abstain. I dont feel strongly one way or other. I see both sides and cant really decide which I prefer...as of now. If this was a real poll I would not have voted till I fully thought it through and read the arguments for and against.
And right now I am leaning towards no instead of yes. DaveMcW argument is what really started me leaning towards "NO". You cant see it in the game on the foriegn advisor screen so...why should you be able to talk about it.
grs Mar 25, 2006, 12:02 PM talking about techs pre alpha.
yes: 3 (grs, bclg100, Robi D)
no: 4 (DaveMcW, Whomp, Matrix, Mauer)
Tubby Rower Mar 25, 2006, 12:06 PM I'd be abstain as well. I honestly don't care, but I think that everyone should be the same.
RegentMan Mar 25, 2006, 02:59 PM My vote is no.
Meleager Mar 26, 2006, 12:10 AM I'll vote yes.
grs Mar 26, 2006, 07:50 AM talking about techs pre alpha.
yes: 4 (grs, bclg100, Robi D, Meleager)
no: 5 (DaveMcW, Whomp, Matrix, Mauer, RegentMan)
robboo Mar 26, 2006, 10:50 PM Hey Dave..I timed out...New IP?
10:51 central.
I am really disappointed I was going to finish my first modern armor this turn. ;)
Sigma Mar 26, 2006, 11:36 PM I'll vote No on the discussing techs thing.
DaveShack Mar 26, 2006, 11:48 PM pitboss reset
Robi D Mar 27, 2006, 08:29 AM Its interesting that the no talking about tech issue is a fairly even split so far. I guess it shows its a grey area.
I would like to add a couple of things to the discussion. First i believe its possible to talk about techs in the game before alphabet because in the dipomacy screen when contacting another human player there is a dialog box so you i believe you can talk to a player in game and discuss things, so would that count as being able to discuss it in game?
The other thing is that it is standard in multiplayer games that you can discuss map features in general but not send screenshots to other players before the map trading tech is discovered, so would this also have any bearing on the tech issue?
grs Mar 27, 2006, 08:33 AM talking about techs pre alpha.
yes: 4 (grs, bclg100, Robi D, Meleager)
no: 6 (DaveMcW, Whomp, Matrix, Mauer, RegentMan, Sigma)
That's imho a clear vote for no tech talking before alpha and since we need a rule (before we all know alpha) it seems to me we should stick to this result.
robboo Mar 27, 2006, 09:13 AM Thats 12 of us voting so far...if you count Tubbys and my own.. as abstain.
Who is missing? I see GeorgeOP, Theoden, and DaveShack any one else? So to be fair you cant reallly say this issue is closed and done.
BCLG100 Mar 27, 2006, 11:56 AM So hang on, if one person was to have alpha could that person then talk about techs with other folk hes met then? or does he have to wait until everyone else has as well?
robboo Mar 27, 2006, 11:57 AM No they can talk..you cant talk tech back. Just like in the game where we can trade tech but they cant until they get alphabet.
BCLG100 Mar 27, 2006, 12:04 PM They can trade techs back with you in the game.
Matrix Mar 27, 2006, 06:01 PM When a civ has researched Alphabet, he can see what techs other civs have and trade in techs. So when one person has got the Alphabet, he can talk about and trade them too. Just parallel.
grs Mar 28, 2006, 01:21 AM Delaying the deceision any further is the same as accepting it. As long as we delay the deceision, it seems there is no talking about techs before alpha. If we accept the vote, there is no talking about techs before alpha. The only difference is that we have a clear deceision once we accept the vote.
Tubby Rower Mar 28, 2006, 05:25 AM  good reasoning Christian!!
robboo Mar 28, 2006, 08:35 AM  :ar15:
Dear AI...
Never leave your worker unprotected.:mischief:
Your buddy,
Robboo the Worker stealer.
Tubby Rower Mar 28, 2006, 09:17 AM Now just sign peace with him
robboo Mar 28, 2006, 09:19 AM Yep...as soon as he talks to me again... :)
:mischief:
BCLG100 Mar 28, 2006, 09:21 AM Who are the AI's remaining?
robboo Mar 28, 2006, 09:28 AM Besides the one I hit..I dont know.
Is it OK to say which AI I stole the worker from? It shoud be in the game log right?
Tubby Rower Mar 28, 2006, 09:29 AM I would say no because not everyone has met her/him.
DaveMcW Mar 28, 2006, 09:40 AM There are only 2-3 AIs left. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out who it is, even if we haven't contacted them.
It's fun to laugh at the AIs, so I wouldn't be too strict on this. :)
robboo Mar 28, 2006, 09:48 AM Understood Tubby..that is why I didnt post it.
grs Mar 28, 2006, 10:39 AM There are only 2-3 AIs left. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out who it is, even if we haven't contacted them.

DaveMcW Mar 28, 2006, 07:16 PM I did some research: Hatshepsut and Peter are the only AIs left.
robboo, your war isn't making you very popular!

Tubby Rower Mar 28, 2006, 07:30 PM  That's funny... He has a sly smirk on his face
robboo Mar 28, 2006, 08:00 PM Yeah but I dont think that really counts...:)
Robi D Mar 29, 2006, 06:51 PM I did some research: Hatshepsut and Peter are the only AIs left.

That's a good one, I didn't notice that. I guess I have to act a little upset when I talk to Robboo:). Personally I not upset at all, if it was up to me it would be
+2 Saving us the trouble of getting rid of Peter:D
robboo Mar 29, 2006, 07:15 PM shhh I thought that was a secret about me attacking Peter...... geesh.
BTW.. I will get peace soon I hope..just wanted the worker..
Mauer Mar 29, 2006, 09:37 PM If it matters, I am furious with everyone :p Through my mystics and sages, I have peered through time to see that I don't win the game. It's terribly upsetting. :(

Well you could wait until Fascism and join a permanent alliance with the strongest civ. Then you could win as a team. But I'm not sure who's ego would allow such an alliance.
EDIT:: poor Meleager... I hear that there is some lovely tundra near the poles. It's quite nice this time of year.
RegentMan Mar 30, 2006, 08:40 AM Matrix, just clarifying, is your thread at CDZ a spoiler thread?

RegentMan Mar 30, 2006, 04:25 PM Yup, Matrix is the founder of Judaism.
Matrix Mar 30, 2006, 05:22 PM Is Bengeance still playing? I haven't seen him post here recently and can't recall I've ever seen an asterisk before his name in the game (meaning he never ends his turn).
Robi D Mar 31, 2006, 09:55 AM Is Bengeance still playing? I haven't seen him post here recently and can't recall I've ever seen an asterisk before his name in the game (meaning he never ends his turn).
I have to say its been about 4 or 5 turns since i've seen an asterisk, but if his not playing then the computers doing a pretty good job for him.
On the subject I know it can be frustrating when you see the turn is only waiting for two or three players. I understand its not always possible for everyone to play their turns but maybe we can set up something where everyone keeps an eye on whose played their turn and if someone hasn't for a while we send them a PM just to check they are still in the game.
grs Mar 31, 2006, 11:41 AM I thought the turn timer would always run for the full 24 hours!?
robboo Mar 31, 2006, 11:53 AM nope if everyone plays it will start the next turn.
I witnessed this last week or so. I hit enter and then it started a new turn.
Robi D Mar 31, 2006, 06:10 PM I thought the turn timer would always run for the full 24 hours!?
The turn timer is the maximum time allowed to finish the turn after which it will start a new turn whether everyone played their turn or not. If everyone plays their turn before the time then a new turn starts. If all 16 of us were online at the same time then we could play a turn in a few minutes.
Tubby Rower Mar 31, 2006, 08:59 PM Alas, I am out of town for the weekend. I've set all of my workers to self-destruct on sight of Whomp. I finally figured out the queuing of the workers actions and research. I dare not set my warriors on a path into the fog since I don't know if they'll enter foreign soil and declare accidentally (they are all idiots).
So until Sunday Tubby will not have a astrix (TM) beside his name. After that I'll continue my previous obsession with civ.
BCLG100 Apr 01, 2006, 04:07 PM Out of interest just how do you queue workers?
Matrix Apr 01, 2006, 06:18 PM Hold down shift when giving an order.
Matrix Apr 01, 2006, 06:49 PM Now I have a question: In what sense does the AI take over when you're not playing your turn? A couple of turns ago I missed about two turns, but the capital wasn't building anything. (Perhaps the production was finished just when I hooked up again.) And my units didn't explore further.
Meleager Apr 01, 2006, 06:53 PM As far as I know they will play your queued turns, otherwise the AI will only kick in when when you are kicked from the game.
robboo Apr 01, 2006, 11:03 PM time out april 1st 1040 pm central...( preclock change :)
Robi D Apr 01, 2006, 11:55 PM Now I have a question: In what sense does the AI take over when you're not playing your turn? A couple of turns ago I missed about two turns, but the capital wasn't building anything. (Perhaps the production was finished just when I hooked up again.) And my units didn't explore further.
The AI wont move units unless they have orders you already set for them. As for production as far as i know the AI should take over and start build something if their is no queue. Like you say maybe had just finished, and the AI wont choose something unless that turn ends too.
Meleager Apr 01, 2006, 11:59 PM My connection also timed out.
DaveShack Apr 02, 2006, 12:01 AM The server has been reset. The game was saved and immediately reloaded so there should be no lost data.
RegentMan Apr 02, 2006, 04:12 AM Wow... logged on seven minutes into the turn!
BCLG100 Apr 02, 2006, 05:19 AM Wow... logged on seven minutes into the turn!
thats commitment for you right there :)
about the AI taking over, when the AI took over for me for about 2 weeks when the game wouldnt let me play it did everything build units, move em about, build a worker, move that about everything!
Matrix Apr 02, 2006, 05:34 AM As far as I know they will play your queued turns, otherwise the AI will only kick in when when you are kicked from the game.
Ah, I get it: "AI take over" means the AI takes over when a player is kicked. Otherwise the civ would retire.
Tubby Rower Apr 03, 2006, 07:09 AM FWIW, here is what I did this weekend... I was going to be away all weekend so before I left,
- I gave my worker(s) queued actions by holding shift and selecting multiple tasks in order that I wanted them complete.
- I set my scouting units on auto-explore
- I set the production queue(s) by holding shift and selecting multiple items in the order I wanted them built
- I set my attacking workers to auto-kill by pressing the "search and destroy Whomp" button.
Furiey Apr 03, 2006, 07:21 AM - I set my attacking workers to auto-kill by pressing the "search and destroy Whomp" button.I can confirm that both Tubbs and Whomp have this very special button having stood in for both of them. Although in Whomp's case it's the "search and destroy Tubby Rower" button. I was so very very tempted to press it.....
Matrix Apr 03, 2006, 09:00 AM Bengeance isn't responding to my PM either. I think we should kick him if we want Arabia to be of any significance in the future.
And it should, cos it's no fun when there's a holy city somewhere out there ripe for the picking...
Tubby Rower Apr 03, 2006, 09:01 AM I agree... 10 turns is a bit too long to be in a monestary.
BCLG100 Apr 03, 2006, 09:22 AM has he been active on the forums recently?
DaveMcW Apr 03, 2006, 09:53 AM @Matrix: If you don't want someone to have a holy city, go raze it yourself. ;)
But I agree, Bengeance should be kicked.
grs Apr 03, 2006, 10:39 AM I agree he should be kicked, if he does not respond, so the AI can take over completely.
Matrix Apr 03, 2006, 12:46 PM Who's Robi_D? I tried to send a PM to "Robi_D", but that user doesn't seem to exist.
Tubby Rower Apr 03, 2006, 01:15 PM Robi D in the forums. No underscore. I don't think that [civ4] likes spaces in the names
DaveShack Apr 03, 2006, 01:16 PM Bengeance replied that he's unable to devote time to continuing the game, so I'll go ahead and kick him when I get home tonight.
Matrix Apr 03, 2006, 01:49 PM Thanks, Tubby. :)
BCLG100 Apr 03, 2006, 04:36 PM edit-deleted
Tubby Rower Apr 03, 2006, 04:53 PM Well that makes me feel good because they were ahead of me a few turns back.
BCLG100 Apr 03, 2006, 05:00 PM  sorry maybe there playing but im just saying what ive seen...
DaveMcW Apr 03, 2006, 06:27 PM I saw mauer online a couple turns ago. He's rather embarrased about his current performance, but he is active!
@Peter, what did Robboo ever do to me? If you had something to offer it might a different story... :mischief:
BCLG100 Apr 03, 2006, 06:35 PM Ah right k, so long as hes still active, kinda curious what he's been doing but nvm. hows everyones game going so far? mines going not so good but ahwell :D
robboo Apr 03, 2006, 07:02 PM I saw mauer online a couple turns ago. He's rather embarrased about his current performance, but he is active!
@Peter, what did Robboo ever do to me? If you had something to offer it might a different story... :mischief:
Ah but Dave..if you did that my killer warriors and tanks would have to kill you..
Mauer Apr 03, 2006, 07:21 PM I have posted here, but not aggressively. I can also assure all of you that I have only been last in turn once. And, yes I do suck at Civ4. I'm sure, with enough searching, that you will find numerous post by me saying as much.
BCLG100 Apr 03, 2006, 07:34 PM My deepest apologies mauer as i said by PM i meant no slight by my post.
DaveShack Apr 04, 2006, 12:27 AM OK, after a false start, Bengeance has been replaced by Saladin. If anyone happened to be logged in at the time, you would have noticed that I joined a couple of times and showed up on the player list twice -- forgot to change the "user name" before hitting OK on the IP screen.
Tubby Rower Apr 04, 2006, 05:24 AM Now the race is on to be Saladin's friend
BCLG100 Apr 04, 2006, 06:22 AM :( i still havnt met him
Matrix Apr 04, 2006, 07:28 AM I can't get in. Connection timed out. Anyone else getting that?
robboo Apr 04, 2006, 08:16 AM Matrix..timing out here also.
BCLG100 Apr 04, 2006, 09:33 AM Yup ive been timed out recently.
BCLG100 Apr 04, 2006, 02:16 PM If were going to be posting spoilers where should we put em?
Mauer Apr 04, 2006, 02:19 PM My deepest apologies mauer as i said by PM i meant no slight by my post.
No problem :) Somebody has to make fun of me, and I needed it since my wife wasn't home at the time :p
Furiey Apr 04, 2006, 02:53 PM I'm timing out (for Whomp) as well. As I haven't played for a while, is the IP address still 68.63.191.219?
BCLG100 Apr 04, 2006, 02:57 PM thats the one i tried as well, i dont think dave has been on since then though.
Tubby Rower Apr 04, 2006, 04:13 PM BCLG100.. You could either post a thread in my forum at CDZ (I won't look at it) or post it in the MP section of the [civ4] forum. Make sure that you title it as a BCLG100's Spoiler for DAve's mega pitboss or something like that. At CDZ people read the threads and will offer independent advice/taunting as appropriate. MP is really most all of what they play so they are honest and won't contaminate you with spoiler info.
Or you could put it in Mistfit's, Whomp's, really anyone's ... just ask permission in the first post and they'll most likely say yes.
Whomp Apr 04, 2006, 04:32 PM Anyone is welcome to post in my forum at CDZ as well.
as a sidenote I can't guarantee what will happen when I'm out of town since I can't mod the spam.....(Tubby!)
DaveShack Apr 04, 2006, 05:13 PM It's probably another ISP glitch.

i tried registering at CDZ today but it wouldnt let me just took me to some screen where you agree or cancel a statement and every time i clicked agree i just got returned to that page so dunno whats going on there, if i can get into CDZ ill take you up on that offer if you dont mind. once ive grappled with the posting pictures thingy :)
Tubby Rower Apr 04, 2006, 07:08 PM for pictures I'd suggest http://imageshack.us, photobucket.com (I think) or one of the other free hosting sites.
CDZ has been having some problems lately.. I'm wondering if that's the problem.
EDIT::
I can't mod the spam.....(Tubby!) Hey that turned out to be a great spamy thread
BCLG100 Apr 04, 2006, 07:12 PM yup its still doing it as well, would e-mailing that email address actually do anything?
oh i know where to send em just i dunno...
Mauer Apr 05, 2006, 09:18 AM Have any of you logged into the game, after having played your turn already, to find that your turn didn't register the last time? I played my turn last night. I logged back in today, and I had to replay my turn from last night. First time that has happened to me, but is it common?
Tubby Rower Apr 05, 2006, 09:25 AM I logged in this morning... but didn't notice any back-tracking issues mainly because I have stuff queued up.
If Dave had to start from an autosave, then your situation makes sense.
Furiey Apr 05, 2006, 02:19 PM I got in for Whomp this morning and from Whomp's comments it did look like it had back-tracked.
BCLG100 Apr 05, 2006, 02:20 PM I havnt checked but i couldnt play last night because of timing out, ill check again soon though.
Tubby Rower Apr 05, 2006, 05:55 PM I played this morning ( 6 hours to go) and this afternoon ( 21 hours to go)
Matrix Apr 05, 2006, 11:55 PM Jesus, I might've played last turn not at all instead of what I did just now. I'm just at home at 6:30AM after a great party, but I made about three mistakes in moves which is about all the mistakes you [/i]can[/i] make at this stage of the game. So I might as well haven't played this turn at all. :crazyeye:
And you wouldn't believe how many typing errors I had to correct while making this post.
Ey, have another one!
grs Apr 06, 2006, 02:57 AM I could play last night (21:00 CET) too. No problems here.
DaveShack Apr 06, 2006, 03:25 AM The pitboss had a CTD and had to be reloaded from an autosave. I put that in the MOTD, but had to reload again later for an ISP problem which might have deleted the MOTD.
Tubby Rower Apr 06, 2006, 05:40 AM Jesus, I might've played last turn not at all instead of what I did just now. Ey, have another one! :beer:Isn't Jesus a heretic in your religion ;)
Let's see 3 mistakes.....
1. lose a worker or settler to an animal
2. pop rush something unintentionally
3. declare war on a strong close neighbor
Furiey Apr 06, 2006, 06:07 AM The pitboss had a CTD and had to be reloaded from an autosave. I put that in the MOTD, but had to reload again later for an ISP problem which might have deleted the MOTD.Ah, that explains it, unfortunately I've just timed out again.
robboo Apr 06, 2006, 08:04 AM Hey Matrix..you might have lucked out on the three mistakes since we are timing out we might have to reload from before you played your turn.
I made a 2 turn mistake starting the game. I moved the settler into a forest instead of the hill where I wanted to settle then I had to move on the hill.
Matrix Apr 06, 2006, 09:18 AM Let's see 3 mistakes.....
1. lose a worker or settler to an animal
2. pop rush something unintentionally
3. declare war on a strong close neighbor
It's not that bad. :p
robboo Apr 06, 2006, 09:29 AM Do share Matrix..when you are able to type without seeing double..:crazyeye:
Tubby probably did the first 2. I did number 1 also....
Tubby Rower Apr 06, 2006, 09:44 AM HEY!!! I might haev to do the 3rd if you keep it up ;)
robboo Apr 06, 2006, 09:50 AM But Whomp is no where near you...
besides I have tanks...and we all know tanks can beat spearmen.
Robi D Apr 06, 2006, 09:58 AM Just out of curiosity is there anyone whos met all the other civs, personally i have 4 to go.
Matrix Apr 06, 2006, 03:52 PM No, I just moved three units into the wrong direction, which slows things down, robboo.
robboo Apr 06, 2006, 04:03 PM Yeah I know how that is...
Matrix Apr 06, 2006, 04:16 PM Hey, I noticed something: I could move my units further than before, like there's a new turn, but the production in the city was the same. I think that happens when you reload. In that perspective it's probably better to minimalize the number of reloads. An extra challenge. :p
robboo Apr 06, 2006, 05:23 PM Matrix..I wonder if it was because you played before the reload then the reload "reset" your movement but not your production. OR that was some party you went to last night:crazyeye:
Might be something to report to Firaxis.
Gyathaar Apr 06, 2006, 05:30 PM Sounds like the same bug there is with reloading pbem saves (every time you save and reload without ending turn, all unit movement is reset)
Tubby Rower Apr 06, 2006, 07:01 PM @ Robi... I'll be sure to avoid you then
Furiey Apr 07, 2006, 06:51 AM Can anyone else get in? I'm timing out again.
Theoden Apr 07, 2006, 08:07 AM I'm timing out as well...
robboo Apr 07, 2006, 10:35 AM I got in fine...
Tubby Rower Apr 07, 2006, 10:35 AM quick, attack Theoden and Whomp (Furiey is substituting) ;)
Theoden Apr 07, 2006, 11:56 AM I managed to get in now. Though it doesn't seem anyone has declared war on me :p.
Furiey Apr 07, 2006, 12:55 PM Too late! I've got in too now.
Whomp Apr 07, 2006, 02:02 PM quick, attack Theoden and Whomp (Furiey is substituting) ;)It's obvious to me you'd be better to attack me when I'm playing not Furiey. She'll give you a serious beatdown.
...and from the looks of it I will be sending in for a new laptop (thank goodness it's under warranty) so you should probably behave until I get back in the game.
BCLG100 Apr 08, 2006, 01:28 PM whomp who should we be diplomacising with, you or furiey???
also did anyone start off with any decent resources next to em? cos how i wish i was them!
Tubby Rower Apr 08, 2006, 02:48 PM I started off with salt water and tundra if those are considered resources.
Matrix Apr 08, 2006, 03:44 PM I thought the map type was 'balanced'. Or isn't it?
In any case, as far as I'm able to see resources, it's state secret. :p
Matrix Apr 08, 2006, 08:01 PM I thought I came up with a cunning plan, but it failed.
I wanted to change my civ-details and in order to prevent the password to change to a freaky code I'd change to password to blank. So I clicked on "My Details" and it appeared I couldn't change the damn password. :undecide: I can still log in using grs' funny program (Thank you, grs!), but I'd like to be able to log in easier in the future, so
could you please kick me, DaveShack? :mischief:
RegentMan Apr 09, 2006, 02:57 AM If Matrix gets fancy with his details, then RegentMan does too! ;)
BCLG100 Apr 09, 2006, 10:04 AM So would that mean matrix would be out of the game? would that then mean an AI with religion is up for grabs?
grs Apr 09, 2006, 10:44 AM Matrix: after logging in with the md5-hashed password, you should be able to enter a new one in my details.
Matrix Apr 09, 2006, 11:14 AM No, BCLG100. Anyone can take over an empire ruled by AI. And if anyone should decide to log in while the Stralandic Empire is until AI rule, DaveShack will have to 'rekick' it, meaning the cheater would be exposed.
Grs, am I looking with my nose? There are four options: Formal civ name, Civ name, Adjective, E-mail address. No password. I saw it for several seconds, which is way more than necessary to absorb it.
grs Apr 09, 2006, 11:33 AM No, BCLG100.
Isn't there a scrollbar?
DaveMcW Apr 09, 2006, 11:42 AM Here's a screenshot.
BCLG100 Apr 09, 2006, 01:49 PM No, BCLG100. Anyone can take over an empire ruled by AI. And if anyone should decide to log in while the Stralandic Empire is until AI rule, DaveShack will have to 'rekick' it, meaning the cheater would be exposed.

Hang on so kicking you, does that mean you would then come back again???
Matrix Apr 09, 2006, 02:03 PM DaveMcW, that's "My Details" in a single player game. :p
I've tried three times to take a screenshot of it, but the damn game doesn't let my take a screenshot there. Anyway, there's no scroll bar, nor am I able to enlarge the window.
BLCG100, when DaveShack kicks me, it means that Straland is ruled by the computer. Then anyone, myself included, can log in as Straland and claim that civ.
BCLG100 Apr 09, 2006, 02:07 PM Ah right ok i getchya now, was just wonderin if it meant that an AI civ was left controlling it for evermore :)
DaveShack Apr 09, 2006, 02:18 PM Matrix, it's ready for you to switch back to a normal PW.
BCLG100 Apr 09, 2006, 02:57 PM quick quick someone jump in and kill all his units ;)
Matrix Apr 09, 2006, 03:20 PM Too late. Straland is reclaimed. :p
Thanks, DaveShack. ;) And sorry about all the fuzz.
RegentMan Apr 10, 2006, 06:56 PM Daaaaave... my password doesn't work.
Is it because I changed my details?
BCLG100 Apr 10, 2006, 07:05 PM lol, tried doing it grs's way?
kinda figure dave is wishing he hadnt set up the game now. :D
Tubby Rower Apr 10, 2006, 07:37 PM Daaaaave... my password doesn't work.
Is it because I changed my details?Yes you dork. :p You didn't see the 2 page discussion of how the pitboss thing sucks because you can't change your details. and/or the restart because so many people screwed up
robboo Apr 10, 2006, 09:14 PM quick everyone kill his units....
I know where at least one is.....bwhahahwhawwha
RegentMan Apr 11, 2006, 01:02 AM I downloaded grs' suggested utility, but what do I type in the command box?
I've tried:
md5 -| -d"password"
md5-|-d"password"
d"password"
md5 d"password"
-dpassword
-d password
-d"password"
-password
BCLG100 Apr 11, 2006, 05:43 AM i have no idea, i didnt undestand it the first time he went through it......the second time........the time someone explained it to me but matriz said it worked! :D
Matrix Apr 11, 2006, 06:53 AM The first one, RegentMan.
In the command prompt, go to the directory where you've placed the program. Type 'md5 -l -d"password"' (not literally "password" of course), and write down the code you get then. That's your current password.
The code will have exactly 32 characters, so a mistake is easily made.
BCLG100 Apr 11, 2006, 07:41 AM could you not just copy paste?
RegentMan Apr 11, 2006, 08:53 AM Hmmm... I'm still doing something wrong. Nothing happens when I hit "enter."
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e194/TitanicWhiz18/Help.jpg
Matrix Apr 11, 2006, 09:02 AM Where's the command prompt?
I've played the program md5 in the directory C:\Tmp\decode\
So this is what I do:
http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/6170/md55mu.jpg
Unfortunately, BCLG100, you can't select text in the Command Prompt window, so you'll have to type it over.
DaveMcW Apr 11, 2006, 09:45 AM Here's a much easier md5 utility.
http://www.phpbbhacks.com/md5.php
Conroe Apr 11, 2006, 09:46 AM Unfortunately, BCLG100, you can't select text in the Command Prompt window, so you'll have to type it over.Normally, you just highlight the text that you want and press ENTER. That will copy the highlighted text into the clipboard buffer. Alternatively, you can click on that tiny icon on the left side of the window bar to pull down a menu.
RegentMan Apr 11, 2006, 05:34 PM Thanks Matrix and Dave. I got back in.
BCLG100 Apr 11, 2006, 05:47 PM cough cough id like to think i helped as well ;)
RegentMan Apr 11, 2006, 05:49 PM And you too BCLG... :)
DaveMcW Apr 11, 2006, 05:59 PM Looks like some people have discovered Alphabet!
BCLG100 Apr 11, 2006, 06:41 PM I noticed that as well :)
Robi D Apr 11, 2006, 10:56 PM Dear Whomp and Tubby,
Since you have both stated that you wish to kill each other and since i'm the only one who knows where you both are, i figured why not take advantage of the situation. For a small fee i can have one of my scouts guide you to the others position. To sweeten the deal i'll throw in a couple of phalanx's at no extra cost. So shall we start the bidding at say... 30 gold:)
RegentMan Apr 12, 2006, 01:08 AM It'll take awhile for you to get that gold.
Matrix Apr 12, 2006, 04:39 AM And by then you can buy a pair of socks for that money.
Tubby Rower Apr 12, 2006, 05:31 AM Whomp's limping right now with a bum computer. I'll let him pony up the money. I know where you came from Robi D. So I can assume that my remaining unmet neighbors have been eaten by the black blog that has plagued the world since Bob created it.
But never fear, we are beating the black blog back more and more every day and will one day conquer it completely.
Whomp, your days are numbered.... my workers have teeth like Ginsu knives.
Robi D Apr 12, 2006, 08:25 AM It'll take awhile for you to get that gold.
Not as long as you might think;)
RegentMan Apr 12, 2006, 08:52 AM :smug:
I might have pissed off the founders of Hinduism, Buddism, and Judaism though...
DaveMcW Apr 12, 2006, 08:54 AM Mongolia will be happy to host a Jihad!
Please send missionaries, not armies.
Edit: Oops, I thought you founded a religion. Guess I should log in before I make assumptions. ;)
Robi D Apr 12, 2006, 09:07 AM I would like to offer many congraulations to regentman on the construction of stone henge, our first wonder of the world, pity i will have calander in 2 turns:lol:
BCLG100 Apr 12, 2006, 09:17 AM I havnt really done anythign of much use in my time so far into the game :D
robboo Apr 12, 2006, 09:56 AM BCLG...you are just making cities for one of us to have..thats all. I like my cities with high population and low numbers of defenders...just so you can prepare.
/not a that I have a clue as to where you are located..yet.
BCLG100 Apr 12, 2006, 10:06 AM And not like i have many cities either, or a high population, i have no idea what ive been doing this game :D
Furiey Apr 12, 2006, 10:30 AM Whomp, your days are numbered.... my workers have teeth like Ginsu knives. :lol:It won't be an uneven fight, even now Whomp's workers are sharpening their fingernails, just no hair pulling please :mischief:.....
BCLG100 Apr 12, 2006, 10:38 AM Furiey do we negotiate with you or whomp? over trade deals?
Furiey Apr 12, 2006, 10:53 AM Furiey do we negotiate with you or whomp? over trade deals?Whomp, sorry I thought Whomp had answered your question before. I'm effectively Whomp's fingers on the keyboard until his PC's restored, but he knows all the agreements he has (I hope) so direct your enquiries to him, but it would probably help to copy me so I know what's happening.
BCLG100 Apr 12, 2006, 10:54 AM Well ive PM'd him awhile back, or least think i did. nvm we'll see what shows up :)
Matrix Apr 12, 2006, 01:15 PM :smug:
I might have pissed off the founders of Hinduism, Buddism, and Judaism though...
And why would that be? I'm already cultural and have a religion. I wish you much fun with those funny stones...whatever the hell it is you're doing with it.
(Although you might be breaking the very first commandment. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/slant.gif)
Whomp Apr 12, 2006, 01:27 PM Whomp, your days are numbered.... my workers have teeth like Ginsu knives.
Bring it dude!! We have a worker named Bruce (aka Ethan the E train) Lee and as we all know Bruce Lee is the sweetest and eats ginsu knives and Ron Popeil veg-a-matics for snacks.

Furiey Apr 13, 2006, 04:54 AM I'm timing out connecting to host.
BCLG100 Apr 13, 2006, 07:21 AM im timing out.
robboo Apr 13, 2006, 11:28 AM how will the patch effect this game????
Is this game now dead???
IF thsi game ends due to patch problems with an old game..I am still intersted in playing a game.
Tubby Rower Apr 13, 2006, 11:31 AM It should be ok.. Everyone needs to update before they log in.
Needs to be a coordinated event.
If it does die, I'll be up for another game. I hope it will work through the patch though.
robboo Apr 13, 2006, 11:58 AM still timing out.....
I will download the patch after lunch.
DaveMcW Apr 13, 2006, 12:09 PM Civ4 1.61 is not compatible with Pitboss 1.52. We all have to upgrade at the same time.
Tubby Rower Apr 13, 2006, 12:12 PM Lets do it now. I timed out this morning. We just need Dave to not restart the game until he's d'loaded the new patch.
BCLG100 Apr 13, 2006, 12:26 PM i tried this morning before the patch and was timing out, now ive downloaded the patch should i wait before trying again then?
DaveShack Apr 13, 2006, 01:04 PM My connection dropped last night, and I saved the game but forgot it wasn't restarted and went to bed. Then started work today...
Anyway, the patch is out so I'm starting a poll on continuing this game on old patch or dropping it to concentrate on the MTDG.
Tubby Rower Apr 13, 2006, 01:05 PM what about starting a new game if the old save won't work on the new patch?
I think continuing on the old patch is not a good idea.
grs Apr 13, 2006, 01:13 PM We should patch and continue in my mind.
Whomp Apr 13, 2006, 01:19 PM Just as I get my pc working again ( :D ) this game is going to die ( :( )?
I would like to continue.
robboo Apr 13, 2006, 01:24 PM vote in the poll you guys....
Tubby Rower Apr 13, 2006, 05:42 PM Poll (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=166957) for those search challenged
DaveShack Apr 14, 2006, 01:55 AM It will continue, see the poll thread for a proposed schedule of events.
Tubby Rower Apr 14, 2006, 06:45 AM Dave I noticed that you voted to let it die. Is that becuase you have been having trouble with the Pitboss? Someone else might be able to take it and host it. I'm sad to say that I can't but someone might....
Matrix Apr 14, 2006, 10:25 AM I could host it if necessary. You'll have to wait till after Easter though.
DaveShack Apr 14, 2006, 11:09 AM My "no" vote is part the pitboss annoyance with my ISP (the frequent disconnects for no apparent reason) and part being worried that MTDG and ISDG are starting up and will take time.
And a small part knowing that I'd better get some better units fast, or I might be hosting a game I've been eliminated from.
Not that I ever run from a challenge of course.:ninja:
Robi D Apr 15, 2006, 08:24 AM I noticed an update to pitboss came out as well so hopefully that will solve some of the problems that have occured.
DaveShack Apr 15, 2006, 10:24 PM The connectivity problems have been with my ISP. For reasons unknown, my "always on" broadband connection isn't quite so always as I'd hope.
It will be nice though if the pitboss doesn't hang when that happens.

That is a problem with alot of broadband services.
BCLG100 Apr 16, 2006, 10:01 AM so i am right in assuming im not meant to be playing for a couple of days.
