I find it interesting. It's a different part of the game that I never get to play. Kind of like playing a varient in Civ III.

I will be taking the family out of town from the morning of July 1st thru the evening of July 4th. Since it is approaching the time of year for thunderstorms here, the system will be powered off. I don't really trust surge suppressors for unattended periods, and will probably unplug the cable connection too.

Sorry. The lack of any smilies, and the general wording, seemed to be more of an aggressive post.

well for one thing is that it could tell you how long you have left on the current turn in case you are away from your computer. Or let you know if a new turn has started instead of having to log on to find out if the turn has changed yet.

Totally agree, it can be a pain having to log in all the time to see how long it is to go, this would be quick and easy to check, plus you can see if its offline too.

Cool. That's what they call teamwork Tubs. I find it, think it's cool but really have no idea how to make it work and you actually know what it does, how to do it and put it in motion. I guess that's why you got A's while I got B's and C's

dave how come matrix it says is the AI but your name doesnt say AI?

Because Matrix was killed while online and when that happened it didn't take him to the final score screen but left him in the game with fog of war everywhere so he retired from the game which effectively means the AI takes over where Dave didn't retire so the AI didn't take over. If that makes sense

Timer's back up

In other news- The scribes of BCLG have been viciously murdered by the warriors of Cooliville-they claim that reading and writing is all well and good but not as much fun as hitting people with sticks. To this end they decided to introduce a Police like state-apparantly it helps make more sticks? and makes people less unhappy if the civ goes to war.

To test this theory the warriors of BCLG decided to go to war-declaring war on 3 people in one go (just to make extra sure things work correctly), they figured they liked the look of them indian curries as the nourishment they got from them would help them beat down the raging horde of Greater Mongolia  ;) and seeing how their little sister would be destroyed decided to take on the larger Mongolia- more horses=more fun :).

So cut things short- India, Mongolia, RM-whatever you are. All your base belongs to me.

The turn we're on, 770 AD, has been reloaded a couple of times from the autosave already. All but 3 players have completed the turn and it wouldn't be fair to resort to deja vu again. Yes, it will be a pain that they might not get to press the button on this turn, but it's being reactivated about the same time of day it was taken off.

The game is now showing up on the stats webpage, under "MTDG Test Game 2". :)

I'd say "unprotected" is a slight exaggeration. Underprotected I'd agree with, as a single warrior doesn't give much protection against an archer. And there is the slight detail that it was unprotected the turn before it was attacked -- I had the settler on go-to and had to shut it off to keep it from walking straight to that archer, and the warrior caught up just in time to be slaughtered. At that early stage, an unprovoked attack didn't seem that likely, at least to someone playing his very first MP game.

civ stats isnt working right....

Its time was supposed to be 9:30am and at 7:30am it said 2 hours. Now it says 1 hour left and 9:30am still. Also what time zone is the time set to? The timer changes but the time of turn end doesnt change.

What time zone is teh time of turn end set to anyway. Pacific and then it would be sorta close to right( minutes off instead of hours)

When I attacked the settler, my archer was one tile away, as was your warrior. You were not logged in, I moved my archer to attack your settler and the result was, that I attacked your warrior, killed it and took the settler. It seems the game moved the automove when I attacked. From my POV it was unprotected when I attacked. I must admit, I felt provoked by an unescorted settler this early, but I would not have attacked it with the warrior on top.

I think this goes back to how 24 hours on the pitboss clock is actually closer to 26 or 28. The civstats page is only adding the time left on the timer to the current time, and can't account for this "extended time". It is showing it in Pacific time, though.

About the unprotected settler issue: It should be quite clear that you should not let someone grab land with unprotected settlers, since someone successfully doing that gains a huge advantage, that's the reason I felt "provoked" to attack it.

I do not feel provoked by you 6 declaring war on me, as it seems quite clear, that you need that many to win. I know that once the traitor BCLG attacks, I will be done quite soon.

@mauer: You had 3 successfull retreats with cats that had a 0% chance to win, so you should take that into consideration too. The battles you lost were all about 50% chance.

I like grs, and didn't mean anything mean by my previous statements. I just enjoy playing, and as Robboo pointed out, we could have been one more turn ahead than we are now. I just find it odd that grs has logged into the game twice this turn and not hit the end turn button. If he forgot fine. but it has happened 3 turns in a row, and I was just pointing it out.

You are allowed to move units, adjust builds, change research, and hand out promotions after you hit end turn so if the reason he is delaying is to protect himself, it is possible to continue your turn while others are finishing.

I'm not saying I enjoy waiting. But I would do the same thing in his situation. There is a realtime component to this game, and grs certainly needs every advantage he can get.

Rather than try to change a player's strategy, I suggested we change the settings to make playing faster the optimal strategy.

grs
Jul 07, 2006, 01:17 PM
Wow, you discuss 2 pages if my motives are good or evil without knowing them? That is ridiculous. I did not "take the ball home". If I wanted to do that, I could have quitted the game or stopped defending. I am just doing everything to hold as long as possible.

What can I say about delays?

1. This days turn only lasted few hours longer since Theoden just played a few hours before me.
2. Other have played late, forgotten to play or to end their turn since the game started. It have been many different people who "delayed" the game.
3. The game has been down numerous times due to a bug in the pitboss game, storms or whatever.

...and now you complain that due to my action in the recent three turn you may have lost 1 (I reapeat in capital letters "ONE") turn?

So what am I doing?

I try to play a part of the turn at the start of it and another part at the end of it. This sometimes gives me a better chance to survive some more turns. I considers this a perfectly acceptable tactic in my situation. If the majority considers this an illegeal tactic, I will stop it.

BUT: Please stop accusing me of something I am not doing. I am not delaying this game, I try to play it to the best of my skills, whether you like that or not.

I agree with Whomp that you are a very honorable (probably the most honorable that I've played against) player. I am sorry for the way that it came accross and my intentions were just to make sure that you didn't forget. I understand that you can't play but at certain times. i'm not having a go at you grs, if you want to hold on until everyone plays thats your choice of tactics which i have no problems with but what i guess some of the others were questioning is if everyone has played then it makes no difference if you end the turn earlier.

Now as for the reason why you are leaving your turns to the end i understand that you are worried about the potential of a double move being used. So to stop that from happening and to help the turns go a bit faster if we all come to a gentlemans agreement to leave lets say a 10 or 12hr delay between moves to avoid that from occuring. However we need everyone's agreement. Personally i'm happy to agree to that.

Maybe it is the difference in being used to play CIV III/CIV IV in PBEM games or not, but from my view, one turn per day is pretty fast. I see no reason to speed the game up. Double moves may be a problem, but that's a feature of a simultaneous game.

I also guess you and grs made the deal shortly after Matrix got attacked. That is a yes, a no and a yes to your guesses. Two out of three is not that bad.

A question that remains for me is how you dice it out, since the investment and the gains from the war will be devided very uneven. I know at least two rulers who lost a good deal of units without a gain and - though I know I will die - I will at least drag as many enemy units possible with me.

That's a very good point. I assume Theoden will be given back his land, and they are probably offering RegentMan his land too. But with DaveShack, Cleopatra, and Saladin eliminated, BCLG is going to be too strong no matter how grs's land is divided.

Maybe mauer will be forcibly exiled to the Mongolian homeland?

Matrix/Meleager will have to tread very carefully, if he grabs too much territory he will be next on the dogpile list. Of course if Meleager doesn't return soon Matrix is probably doomed anyway (big name and all).

Matrix/Meleager will have to tread very carefully, if he grabs too much territory he will be next on the dogpile list. Of course if Meleager doesn't return soon Matrix is probably doomed anyway (big name and all).

That very Napoleon of you DaveMcW, trying to divide the alliance against you. Full marks for effort:)

We might get to test that tank vs out dated unit battle.

They weren't worth upgrading, think of it as a stocktake clearance, and yet my fine obsoletes were only beaten by that very good RNG you seem to be enjoying. The only thing you have changed by holding on is that i've had to re direct my modern units from other tasks

'The army of BCLG got bored with waiting around today and decided that it should get its arse in gear and move about and maybe do a bit of damage. Rumours have it that upon entering Indian territory a couple of the units were struck down with what the medics have called 'lack of arsedness' and decided to wait at home to make sure no-one decided to attack while their brothers were busy elsewhere. Spies around grs rumoured for him to have said 'oh s***' '

then of course some of you may have seen im building the manhattan project in the 'boom boom room', shortly i will have nukes being produced and an SDI in the Loveshack.

theoden must have left the game running or didnt exit to desk top. It was suggested in CFC multiplayer forums that if people didnt exit to desk top with certain firewalls and setttings it could cause this problem. Everybody exit to desk top when you are done.

Sorry, guys  I left the game running because I was doing a lot of diplomacy and needed to constantly check the game for info (but during that period there apparantly were no failed connection attempts, and my firewall hasn't blocked anyone in this game before). I then forgot about it for 1-2 hours when I left the computer, and when I came back there were 20 "another player failed connection" messages.

Nope exiting to desk top is the only way to stop the problem..however once you exit to desk top after fixing the other pitboss game it will be OK. IF yu notice on the civ stats page..if it sasy you have logged out tehn you have even if you went to eh other game. The biggest problems werer reported when peopel went adn played AI games not other pitboss or multiplayer games.

It doesnt( shouldnt) stop people it only slowes down the game loading for them. I posted on this before and ihave been looking in the multiplayer forum but ant find it. It was buried in another thread not related to connectivity.

mine doesn't either... I think that he only has enough lines for 9 people. It could be the first 9 in the list where you select your civ.

It shows lines for the civs that he could tell what the color should be, and doesn't for the ones with oddball colors. Adding in the remaining civs colors using the values from the xml file is on his todo list.

The graph really needs to be taller too, being so squashed it's really hard on the eyes. :crazyeye:
