DaveShack Feb 13, 2006, 06:36 PM There was some interest in a pitboss game within the team, so I'll see if I can get it running on my system. If you're interested in playing, please post your preferences for which leader you'd like to play and any special requests about the map. If more than one player wants the same leader then we'll need to consider how to resolve the dispute. Also include in your signup how long you think the turn timer should be.
Current IP 68.63.191.219
Ginger_Ale Feb 13, 2006, 06:43 PM Methinks you have posted in the wrong forum, DaveShack. ;)
RegentMan Feb 13, 2006, 06:46 PM Although regardless, I'd be interested. If you need more players, you know my number.
DaveShack Feb 13, 2006, 08:12 PM excrement... sorry
Though you're right, it might also be entertaining to have a pitboss team for individuals who are playing in the MTDG.
DaveShack Feb 14, 2006, 12:12 AM The pitboss game is now live. I just generated a 18 player all random game, and anyone who wants to join can just pop in there and grab any available civ, first come first served. Put in your password and you've got the civ reserved, unless you get kicked for not showing up often enough. ;)
Launch Civ4
Multi Player
Direct IP
on the top of the popup screen put your user name
on the right half of the screen put this IP and no password. 68.63.190.187
Choose your civ, enter a password, and play your turn. Once you hit enter you can leave the game (to main menu or desktop) or leave it running, your choice. It's on simultaneous turns and a 48 hour turn timer, just to give us all a view of what it would be like to go all around the play order every 2 days.
Tubby Rower Feb 14, 2006, 07:21 AM I'll be signing up when I get home today if there are any civs left.
2 days should be plenty of time. And if this works out it'll be a heck of a lot better than 24 hours per team (max 1 full turn every 5 days).
Whomp Feb 14, 2006, 07:43 AM I'll join up as well DS.
BCLG100 Feb 14, 2006, 11:33 AM Ill play too but i have to go away next week so would the game still accomodate me?
Whomp Feb 14, 2006, 11:55 AM The beauty of Pitboss is it will play your turns if you're not there to participate.
Tubby Rower Feb 14, 2006, 01:34 PM I've tried twice to join and it times out both times.... Any ideas?
I don't know if you have to have a game name or not. In the Pitboss games that I've played, I've always hosted them. So I'm not familiar with connecting to one.
Sigma Feb 14, 2006, 01:43 PM I am having trouble connecting as well.
DaveShack Feb 14, 2006, 02:24 PM OK, let's see if it works now...
broadband great, routers & firewalls :wallbash:
Tubby Rower Feb 14, 2006, 02:38 PM Yes it works now thanks
Tubby Rower Feb 14, 2006, 02:55 PM I also saved a spot for Whomp. ( I covered up the map so as to not see his starting location.)
Everyone needs to check the chat log by pressing ctrl-tab. I didn't see any pop ups of the messages but they are all logged there.
Are there any rules, such as "don't all attack Tubby"?
Whomp Feb 14, 2006, 03:02 PM Are you Catherine? If you are we have no other choice but to attack you.
Mauer Feb 14, 2006, 03:30 PM Are you Catherine? If you are we have no other choice but to attack you.
Um, that would be me :scared:
robboo Feb 14, 2006, 04:01 PM any spaces left?
Whomp Feb 14, 2006, 04:29 PM Um, that would be me :scared:
Hehe. No issues here Mauer. Admiral Kutzov vouches for you. BTW you're Izzie and she's pretty hot too!
BCLG100 Feb 14, 2006, 05:15 PM Ok ive installed pitboss to my main directory and turned off every firewall etc i can see/think off and yet my connection keeps timing out, any ideas?
RegentMan Feb 14, 2006, 05:48 PM Hmmm... I seem to be timing out as well. Reading above, do I have to actually download something?
DaveMcW Feb 14, 2006, 05:55 PM Times out for me too.
There are a lot of known issues with Pitboss. Hopefully they will be fixed enough in the next patch that it becomes the prefered method of playing the MTDG.
Tubby Rower Feb 14, 2006, 06:07 PM You don't have to download anything. It should work. I'm getting a timeout as well after connecting earlier....
I've used pitboss in a few games and I've experienced no problems.
DS, is this a dedicated computer or is someone else logging you out and then logging in. If my wife didn't need this computer I would leave this one with the game running.
So far here is whose in as of when I logged in and played my turn...
DS - Japan
Whomp - Ghengis Khan
Mauer - Isabella
Tubby - Cathy of Russia
DaveShack Feb 14, 2006, 08:32 PM It's dedicated, but there could be firewall issues.
DaveShack Feb 14, 2006, 09:15 PM OK, added another firewall rule, let's see if this is more reliable.
Meleager Feb 14, 2006, 09:46 PM Timed out for me :(
Pinging your address works fine though
Meleager Feb 14, 2006, 10:46 PM Its all working now, its a problem at my end. I had to shut my firewall completely down rather then just open up port 2056. I shall have to fiddle with it a bit.
DaveShack Feb 14, 2006, 10:47 PM Thanks to Meleager, found out firewall issues can occur on both ends of the connection. You might have to open port 2056 to UDP, or in some cases drop the firewall entirely. It's a matter of personal preference whether that's acceptable. ;)
Meleager Feb 14, 2006, 11:25 PM Looks like my password has been corrupted and the md5 thing doesn't seem to be working. Can you kick me out (i'm the romans) and I'll rejoin and reset my password.
That is definately a glitch they will want to be fixing.
Robi D Feb 14, 2006, 11:53 PM I connected up with no problems, i even went back in after i finished my turn to check my password, again no probs.
Should at least give us something fun to do while the game gets set up:)
Edit- I chose alex btw, so please don't crush me
Meleager Feb 14, 2006, 11:57 PM I looked at the alt-d screen which can apparently corrupt it sometimes without even entering an email adress
DaveShack Feb 15, 2006, 12:34 AM Kick complete.
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 12:37 AM Now the romans are completely gone.
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 01:03 AM As the romans have completely disapeared (in game as well), I joined as the Aztecs being careful not to look at the alt-d screen. I then logged in again and my password was ok.
RegentMan Feb 15, 2006, 01:29 AM It works for me now! :D I left and relogged in, and it works perfectly. I chose Bismarck. Good luck to everyone. :)
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 04:35 AM I'll try again tonight.....
DS - Japan
Whomp - Ghengis Khan
Mauer - Isabella
Tubby - Cathy of Russia
RobiD - Alex the Nerd
Meleager - Aztecs
RegentMan - Bismark
Theoden - Frechies
May the Romans rest in peace and not come back to haunt us.
Theoden Feb 15, 2006, 05:36 AM It finally works for me. You better all watch out for the french now :p
Bengeance Feb 15, 2006, 06:31 AM I've joined on as Sally of Arabia
RegentMan Feb 15, 2006, 07:46 AM Cathy of Russia, it would do you well to spell your superior's name correctly. After all, you know what we Germans can do to you Russians!
;)
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 09:05 AM Alright longbowman.... I will slap you with my ponytail
BCLG100 Feb 15, 2006, 09:31 AM all the civs i wanted everyone else had taken :( so am trying a new civ, the egyptians :D
robboo Feb 15, 2006, 09:50 AM Alright longbowman.... I will slap you with my ponytail
I think I am in love....
oh yeah...
Me chinesse. Me play joke. Me gonna pee pee in Tubbys coke.
Matrix Feb 15, 2006, 02:50 PM I am Emperor Matrix of Straland. :yeah:
Replacing Asoka of India.
This is going to be fun! http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/jump.gif
BCLG100 Feb 15, 2006, 02:58 PM matrix are you playing the MTDG?
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 03:02 PM Ok 4 more spots available....
Meleager - Aztecs
BCLG100 - Egypt
Matrix - Asoka of India
Bengeance - Arabs
Whomp - Ghengis of the Mongols
Theoden - French
Robi_d - Alex the Nerd
Tubby - Cathy of Russia
Robboo - Chinese
Sigma - America
mauer - Isabella
Regentman - Bismark (no c... it doesn't have enough vowels for another consonant)
DAveShack - Japan
Mansa Musa
Victoria
Huayna Capac
Cyrus
woo hoo I have the 3rd best city in the world behind the Chinese and Americans
robboo Feb 15, 2006, 03:27 PM bwahhahaha..you should see my position.
/I will need all the help I can get. First multiplayer game.:mischief:
Whomp Feb 15, 2006, 03:27 PM Matrix is an honorary Piffle candidate. If he decides to join our anarchist whack jobs he can join.....when he pleases.....cuz he can.
Matrix Feb 15, 2006, 04:06 PM matrix are you playing the MTDG?
i.e. "multi team demogame"?
In that case I thank for the offer. :) After having played two MTDG's for Civ3, two multi-"duel"-player games and two succession games, I had to come to the conclusion I'm really a despot in heart and soul. A solo player. Besides, I get rather agitated when having to deal with total idiots in the team I'm in. :mischief: Even when they are scarce.
In other words: I work alone.
Robi D Feb 15, 2006, 04:14 PM Ok 4 more spots available....

Alex the nerd ???
Oh well i'll take that as a compliment because brains win over beauty any time, even if that hair flick thing is kinda cute ;)
BCLG100 Feb 15, 2006, 04:16 PM i.e. "multi team demogame"?

yep did mean that :) nd ok then :)
DaveMcW Feb 15, 2006, 05:19 PM Wow, 3 financial civs unclaimed? Put me down for Huayna Capac. :)
I vote for 24 hours/turn.
DaveMcW Feb 15, 2006, 06:14 PM This is really strange. I built my city, ended my turn, and logged out.
When I tried to log back in, the Inca wouldn't accept my password. There were also some civs missing from the list to choose from. (Already logged in?) So for fun I tried typing my password into various civs. The French worked! Once I realized what was happening I covered my screen and logged out immediately. But Theoden is now called DaveMcW. :(
robboo Feb 15, 2006, 06:38 PM This sure isnt looking good for a MTDG by pitboss...
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 06:38 PM  you guys need to pick a better password.
Someone else had trouble logging back in. I wonder what that's all about :hmm: We now have 3 civs left. Theoden is indeed now DaveMcW. As are the Incans
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 06:42 PM I had trouble as well. Maybe someone else now has my password?
I guess we will see, at least we will have 48hours to figure it out. Hopefully, the firaxians are working away at fixing this.
DaveMcW Feb 15, 2006, 06:43 PM Apparently there is a known bug in this version of Pitboss.
If you open the Options screen (Ctrl+O) you will damage your password!
The only way to reset it is kick the affected players and have them choose a new password. Their civ will survive if you have takeover AI enabled.
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 06:47 PM The Alt-D screen does the same thing. We tried kicking me before but it completely destroyed the Romans all together.
This thread may be able to help with passwords: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=3526353#post3526353
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 06:51 PM crap I changed the name of my civ and now I can't get back in either. :gripe:
I can join as another civ but I'd rather not if we can get it fixed
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 06:57 PM I prolly need to be booted [pissed]
Tubby Rower Feb 15, 2006, 07:01 PM The Russians need to be kicked. I am now Mansa Musa.... stupid pitboss... although it would be nice to play this way in the MTDG, IMO with these known problems, I'm changing my mind
GeorgeOP Feb 15, 2006, 07:37 PM I jumped in and played one turn with Victoria. I then exited and tried to re-enter. It will not let me back in.
robboo Feb 15, 2006, 07:49 PM Boy is this a FUBAR...I might win if I dont enter again...:D
Robi D Feb 15, 2006, 08:46 PM I tried to get in again and did so without any problems.
btw robboo you didn't finish your turn :)
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 09:31 PM Try that link I posted previously if your password isn't working. The Ald-D (you detals) and Ctrl-O (options) screen should be avoided as they cause problems.
DaveMcW Feb 15, 2006, 09:36 PM That link describes how to hex edit a savegame and reset the password. We could accomplish the same thing by kicking the player (with takeover AI enabled).
robboo Feb 15, 2006, 09:45 PM I tried to get in again and did so without any problems.
btw robboo you didn't finish your turn :)
I know I was thinking about tech and build. I had never played china so I went play with them a little bit first.
I logged back in and it works fine.
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 10:12 PM That link describes how to hex edit a savegame and reset the password. We could accomplish the same thing by kicking the player (with takeover AI enabled).
last time that resulted in completely wiping out the romans
DaveMcW Feb 15, 2006, 10:20 PM last time that resulted in completely wiping out the romans
Is takeover AI enabled? If you're sure it is, you're welcome to test on me.
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 10:23 PM Is takeover AI enabled? If you're sure it is, you're welcome to test on me.
You will have to ask DaveShack.
DaveShack Feb 15, 2006, 11:18 PM No, it's not enabled. I'll roll it again now that most everyone has the right connectivity. For reasons best left unsaid :mischief: , it will be a few days before that happens, so we should consider this game as just one to shake out the bugs.
Cyrus is the only civ remaining if someone wants to jump in there and take him.
Edit: On second thought if most people want it restarted with takeover AI enabled and so they can recover the "lost" civs, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and restart, and then deal with the future when it comes. :mischief:
Meleager Feb 15, 2006, 11:30 PM I think it might be a good idea to restart and tell everyone to make sure they don't look at the wrong screens. That way even if the passwords are corrupted we can still fix things.
I wonder if 48 hours is too long as well.
EDIT - If we restart I will go back to the romans as well.
Robi D Feb 15, 2006, 11:52 PM Edit: On second thought if most people want it restarted with takeover AI enabled and so they can recover the "lost" civs, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and restart, and then deal with the future when it comes. :mischief:
I think that might be the best thing to do as were still on the first turn, so nothing would be lost. Also if bugs come up after some turns are played then people might end up losing their civs altogether which would be more frustrating, so its probably best to have the ai takeover enabled so people can recover their civs if there are any problems. Also i'm sure we can come to a gentleman's agreement not to pinch each others civs when its restarted
RegentMan Feb 16, 2006, 12:06 AM I don't mind restarting with AI takeover on. Also, 48 hours is too long. Let's do 24 (coincidently an awesome show).
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 04:31 AM Restart would be good. If we happen to not play in time, does the AI play our turn for us? That would be the best situation. Otherwise, I'd suggest 36 hours for the timeout.
Robi D Feb 16, 2006, 04:49 AM Restart would be good. If we happen to not play in time, does the AI play our turn for us? That would be the best situation. Otherwise, I'd suggest 36 hours for the timeout.
The ai wouldn't play your shot if you are in control, you just miss out on doing anything that turn.
Gyathaar Feb 16, 2006, 05:36 AM The ai wouldn't play your shot if you are in control, you just miss out on doing anything that turn.
Unless you have commands/research/builds queued up
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 06:36 AM Restart is fine with me..but wait till I post a screenie of my starting spot. ARGH..
I had 6 resources within the fat cross. i will still play China
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 06:39 AM I had corn, gold & wines I think in my fat cross when I had Cathy.
When I started as Mansa, Building the capital popped a GH and gave me a map of Berlin
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 06:52 AM 4 resources were unique for me.... 3 silks, 1 cow, 1 rice, and 1 wine plus a couple of hills and flood plains.
I think we will pretty much be on top of each other unless someone got an island to themselves. Roughly how far away form you was Berlin. My test game forced me to only have about 2 to 4 cities on a map this tight.
Theoden Feb 16, 2006, 07:31 AM So for fun I tried typing my password into various civs. The French worked! Once I realized what was happening I covered my screen and logged out immediately. But Theoden is now called DaveMcW. :(
 you guys need to pick a better password.
The first time I picked the French I entered a password and then the connection got interrupted. When I tried picking them again later I wasn't asked to enter any password but got right into the game. So I'm sure something is messed up and probably any password will allow you to enter (and I'm sure we're not using the same password ;)).
I would investigate it further but at the moment I just get timed out messages.
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 07:33 AM DS prolly killed the game since we were planning a restart anyway.
RegentMan Feb 16, 2006, 07:36 AM Ack you saw Berlin? Pretty darn close...
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 07:40 AM yup approximately 8 tiles away. So next time everyone's first build should prolly be a warrior ;)
RegentMan Feb 16, 2006, 07:40 AM Heh mine was a scout...
DaveMcW Feb 16, 2006, 07:59 AM It's very easy to save the game, open it in notepad, and run a brute force attack against people's passwords. I cracked DaveShack's 6-character password in half an hour.
So if you are really concerned about security, choose long and complex passwords!
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 08:17 AM You mean using my screenname it isnt a good idea? Also now we know how you plan on winning... ;)
DaveShack Feb 16, 2006, 08:27 AM Sorry, I had to do "server maintenance". :( The new game is live, but the old one can be loaded up on request if you want to take photos of your previous start positions. :) I might have to reboot again, have been trying to only do that when nobody is connected.
BTW the game parameters are Large, Balanced, Quick, Noble, 24 hour, simul, takeover.

What are they using, a straight substitution? I guess with the SDK (once it comes out) it would be pretty straightforward to write a little program that cracks PW's. Better not use a PW that is in common with your other stuff.
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 08:46 AM How much time is left on the timer? I guess the AI could be trusted to build a city although first tech isn't always a smart idea to let the computer decide. especially since it's Dave's computer.
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 08:47 AM btw, in case I forgot to mention this...
Thanks DS for hosting this game!!!
DaveMcW Feb 16, 2006, 08:58 AM What are they using, a straight substitution? I guess with the SDK (once it comes out) it would be pretty straightforward to write a little program that cracks PW's. Better not use a PW that is in common with your other stuff.
They are using MD5 encryption, which is fast and secure. It is so fast, that trying all short passwords doesn't take very long once you obtain the encrypted string.
BCLG100 Feb 16, 2006, 09:06 AM my start previously was very bad, can we choose different civs this time or do we have to remain as the same ones?
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 09:11 AM I'm fine with first come first serve again. It sucks though that I won't be able to get to the game until ~3pm.
I could play most any leader. So if you want Mansa or Cathy you can have them without anyone getting a heartache over it.
btw, post here who you have so those who can't get to the game right away can start picking a second choice.
DaveMcW Feb 16, 2006, 09:13 AM I think we re-rolled the map, so starts are different.
BCLG100 Feb 16, 2006, 09:21 AM I think we re-rolled the map, so starts are different.
oh yeah i realised that :) just noticed others prviously talking about their start, k ill go load up the game now and get back to you.
Theoden Feb 16, 2006, 09:39 AM I was able to join without problems this time, as the Incans. Many of the civs have the other of their leader choices now. There's almost no financial civs, and Cathy is substituted by Peter :p
Bengeance Feb 16, 2006, 09:41 AM I just hope no one grabs Saladin before I get a chance to get back to the game.
Bengeance Feb 16, 2006, 09:43 AM Oh, and I also had a very neat starting place. Capital city popped a goodie hut and gave me a map to DS and the Japanese. I had 4 sugar and 4 dye in my city radius with cows not very far away.
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 09:44 AM Would anyone mind posting the leaders that are available? It would be greatly appreciated as lunch only lasts 30 minutes (not that that time frame restricts my posting efforts  )
BCLG100 Feb 16, 2006, 09:45 AM im monty this time :)
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 09:54 AM back in as China if its available...I dont want to switch and take someones previous civ.
Dont worry about the screenies..it was a thing of beauty but what the heck it doesnt exist anymore anyway. :)
Theoden Feb 16, 2006, 09:55 AM Would anyone mind posting the leaders that are available? It would be greatly appreciated as lunch only lasts 30 minutes (not that that time frame restricts my posting efforts  )
Only three leaders claimed this far:
Tokugawa - DaveShack
Huayna Capac - Theoden
Montezuma - BLCG100
Mansa Musa
Roosevelt
Julius Caesar
Peter
Qin Shi Huang
Isabella
Bismarck
Saladin
Cyrus
Hatshepsut
Victoria
Napoleon
Kublai Khan
Alexander
Gandhi
Whomp Feb 16, 2006, 10:06 AM Just a word of caution...anyone who takes Caesar should be very careful. As teams are met it may not be difficult to gain consensus for a dogpile against that UU.
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 10:08 AM bah... I might take them then... Offering protection could be better than what the other civs can offer diplomatically.
Remember that even UU's can be gifted and an American Praetorian is just as deadly as a Roman one ;)
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 10:09 AM in as China..not as good start as last time but what the heck.
Thanks Daveshack for setting this up.
Whomp Feb 16, 2006, 10:12 AM bah... I might take them then... Offering protection could be better than what the other civs can offer diplomatically.
Remember that even UU's can be gifted and an American Praetorian is just as deadly as a Roman one ;)
Good point. :D I may have to rush home at lunch and grab those legions!!!
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 10:18 AM Good point. :D I may have to rush home at lunch and grab those legions!!!
I'll be America then good buddy ;)
DaveMcW Feb 16, 2006, 10:27 AM Remember that even UU's can be gifted and an American Praetorian is just as deadly as a Roman one ;)
But an Aztec one is even more deadly! (+1 promotion)
BCLG100 Feb 16, 2006, 10:55 AM so im going to be waiting for someone to send me some legions :D
GeorgeOP Feb 16, 2006, 11:23 AM I'll join in about 8 hours. I have no preference, as I'd be surprised if I lasted too long without some help from neighbors.
Matrix Feb 16, 2006, 01:17 PM Guys, I was given a link to this thread from someone at CivDuelZone (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/) and was under the assumption that it was posted in the Multiplayer subforum. Now that it's posted here and I'm not joining any team...would you please allow me in this game anyway? I'd love to join as I tried to start something similar (PitBoss, 18p), but found no interest. If not, just kick me out. No hard feelings.
I'll pick Cyrus, if not yet taken. :)

I'll pick Cyrus, if not yet taken. :)You're in Matrix. I'm the one who posted it at CDZ. Like I said, you're honorary Team Piffle if the players here want only MTDG members. Worst case is you sign up and you never post in our forum since our team spams those private forums with the best of them. :p
Matrix Feb 16, 2006, 01:33 PM Thanks, Whomp. :)
But...I get timed out. I can't log in, though I could before. :undecide: Anyone know what the problem could be?
Ginger_Ale Feb 16, 2006, 01:39 PM I think with all those problems arising earlier last night, it shows how unstable this would be for the MTDG. ;)
Tubby Rower Feb 16, 2006, 01:59 PM I get timed out as well. Since the other players have already logged in, I presume that the IP address is the same.
BCLG100 Feb 16, 2006, 03:13 PM mine worked before but i havnt rechecked it recently.
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 03:27 PM I think with all those problems arising earlier last night, it shows how unstable this would be for the MTDG. ;)
YEP--wouldnt want to risk starting over because someone clciks the wrong button.
DaveShack Feb 16, 2006, 04:08 PM It should be working now.
There was an additional (3rd!!) firewall program :crazyeye: which was disabled before, but turned itself back on when I had to reboot. It has now been uninstalled.
I'm on MSN and the chat rooms now.
RegentMan Feb 16, 2006, 04:12 PM I'm Bismarck again, but Robi_D is taking foooorever to join the game so I can't take my turn yet. Hurry up Aussie! ;)
Meleager Feb 16, 2006, 04:22 PM I'm in as the romans. Everyone is on at the moment it seems.
EDIT - so everyone needs to be nice to me if they want any pretorians.
Robi D Feb 16, 2006, 04:41 PM I'm Bismarck again, but Robi_D is taking foooorever to join the game so I can't take my turn yet. Hurry up Aussie! ;)
I have been known to require sleep every few day or so ;)
I'm back as Alex and i got a pretty good startin location.
DaveMcW Feb 16, 2006, 05:03 PM The Financials got snapped up fast this time!
I'm in as the Mongols.
Whomp Feb 16, 2006, 06:45 PM Went in as Vicky. Not quite the start as the first time but let's rock!
DaveShack Feb 16, 2006, 07:55 PM Looks like just 3 civs are left: Gandhi, Peter, Hatshepsut.
Bengeance and RegentMan didn't hit end turn yet, and we have a couple of folks who decided to move before settling.
robboo Feb 16, 2006, 08:02 PM yeah that move was an opps..but oh well.:D
Meleager Feb 16, 2006, 08:13 PM Bengeance and RegentMan didn't hit end turn yet, and we have a couple of folks who decided to move before settling.
You would too if you were me. I turned an awful spot into a great one.
Makes my people fitter from cross-country training as well.
DaveShack Feb 16, 2006, 08:30 PM Nothing wrong with moving of course... ;) I was torn between having one great spot or possibly two good spots.
Meleager Feb 16, 2006, 08:51 PM Nothing wrong with moving of course... ;) I was torn between having one great spot or possibly two good spots.
Game rigger :shake: ;)
Robi D Feb 16, 2006, 09:29 PM Looks like just 3 civs are left: Gandhi, Peter, Hatshepsut.
Bengeance and RegentMan didn't hit end turn yet, and we have a couple of folks who decided to move before settling.
And to think RegentMan had a go at me for holding the game up:nono:
when all along he's the one doing delaying it ;)
Oh well at least i now have someone on who to demonstrate the devistating double-move with my horses on
Tubby Rower Feb 17, 2006, 04:46 AM I signed on as Mansa Musa. I had totally forgot that Meleager signed up as the Romans last time before he had to be kicked.
We should be pretty close to turn 2 now correct?
Let me ask about a few rules....
1. Is it ok to give goto orders in this game?
2. What happens if we miss a turn?
3. Will the AI be playing the civs not chosen?
4. Can we trade maps out of game?
Also my MSN addy is casey DOT venters AT hotmail DOT com if anyone needs to get me for diplo. I'm assuming this is not 18 civ AW :shake:
Matrix Feb 17, 2006, 05:22 AM 1. Of course! You need to do something when you're not able to play.
2. Research, production, goto moves go on. The rest is on hold. It's just the same as when you end your turn at the beginning of a turn in single player.
3. Yes.
4. No!
And I believe I already have you on MSN. For the others, I'll just send a PM when I need to speak to them. ;)
Robi D Feb 17, 2006, 05:46 AM Correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't the ai civ's only take their turn at the end of the turn, if thats so then any civs not taken should be booted to speed up play.
DaveMcW Feb 17, 2006, 07:57 AM Correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't the ai civ's only take their turn at the end of the turn, if thats so then any civs not taken should be booted to speed up play.
I think the turn ends when all the humans click end turn. But I expect there will always be a human holding up the process, especially when double-moves come into play.
DaveShack Feb 17, 2006, 09:04 AM Gandhi, Peter, and Hatty are still available. I'm going to claim them and kick myself to convert them to AI's so that we can get going. If anyone wants to join after this they should be able to claim one in the normal way and inherit the AI's position.
robboo Feb 17, 2006, 09:10 AM question on diplo..follow up to Tubby's
all diplo takes place in the game( non email agreements to not fight or claim land)...does both people have to be online at the same time or can you make a request then send it to the other person to view and accept/decline?
Also does the within game chat work with no problems that would cause me to get booted or crash the game?
DaveMcW Feb 17, 2006, 09:38 AM Chat log does not do much. It only shows comments made while you are online.
Game chat works, but there is no way to see who is online.
DaveShack Feb 17, 2006, 10:02 AM Correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't the ai civ's only take their turn at the end of the turn, if thats so then any civs not taken should be booted to speed up play.
I converted the unclaimed players to AI's, and they immediately took their turn. In simul turns nothing is keeping them back, so they go first at the beginning of the turn.
RegentMan Feb 17, 2006, 10:37 AM And to think RegentMan had a go at me for holding the game up:nono:
when all along he's the one doing delaying it ;)
Oh well at least i now have someone on who to demonstrate the devistating double-move with my horses on
Hey! I thought that I had hit end turn, but someone was lagging the game... ;)
All fixed now. Turn two has begun. :)
Tubby Rower Feb 17, 2006, 10:43 AM We have to do diplo stuff in game??? why not allow MSN or PM's to dialogue? Out of all of the times that I've been on the only time anyone else was on was when like 8 people were on yesterday.
I think that in-game would likely be the last place that I would attempt diplo. some of the other media is much quicker.
Any other ground rules besides Matrix's answers to my questions?
DaveShack Feb 17, 2006, 10:59 AM I think diplo out of game (PM, MSN, chatroom, etc.) is OK provided you've met in-game.
If anyone plans to be away for a significant amount of time, it would be a good idea to either have a buddy play for you (not someone already in the game ) or to be kicked and let the AI play until your return. It will get really annoying if someone drops out unannounced and we run at a solid 24 hours per turn, since it should be possible to go much faster except for the timezone differences.
robboo Feb 17, 2006, 11:05 AM yeah but remember sometimes things happen that are out of our control...
/like the impending ice storm here..that could make me electricityiless.
GeorgeOP Feb 17, 2006, 12:26 PM If anyone plans to be away for a significant amount of time, it would be a good idea to either have a buddy play for you (not someone already in the game ) or to be kicked and let the AI play until your return.
What do you consider a significant amount of time? I don't have access to cIV on the weekends. (Work takes me out of the city) I thought that with PitBoss the computer would take your turn if you weren't there at the end of the turn timer, I wasn't aware that my units would do nothing.
Whomp Feb 17, 2006, 01:03 PM What do you consider a significant amount of time? I don't have access to cIV on the weekends. (Work takes me out of the city) I thought that with PitBoss the computer would take your turn if you weren't there at the end of the turn timer, I wasn't aware that my units would do nothing.
I think you can set up "go to's" but for sure put in your "build queues.
Meleager Feb 17, 2006, 05:35 PM What do you consider a significant amount of time? I don't have access to cIV on the weekends. (Work takes me out of the city) I thought that with PitBoss the computer would take your turn if you weren't there at the end of the turn timer, I wasn't aware that my units would do nothing.
I imagine that over the weekend you should just be able to set up go-to orders and it wont be a problem. However, if its going to be a week or so, then you will probobly have to make arrangements.
Anyhow, off to play my turn.
DaveShack Feb 18, 2006, 01:07 PM As Tubby Rower mentioned in the in-game chat, the pitboss clock runs slower than wall clock, lengthening the turn timer. It seems to do this when someone is logged in -- maybe it's only when I'm connected to my own machine? :crazyeye: I've reported it as a bug in case there is something easy they can do to fix it.
Robi D Feb 18, 2006, 10:20 PM As Tubby Rower mentioned in the in-game chat, the pitboss clock runs slower than wall clock, lengthening the turn timer. I've noticed that too, it seems 24 hrs goes for around 28.
DaveMcW Feb 19, 2006, 11:37 AM This should be fixed in the next patch.
Matrix Feb 19, 2006, 04:58 PM Well, it's not too much off, fortunately. I might've been lucky because of it. I was away this weekend, but didn't miss a turn, with just 5 hours left. :)
An additional rule could be, but is very debatable: no diplo talk about technologies until technologies are tradable (i.e. when one has researched the alphabet).
Whomp Feb 19, 2006, 05:13 PM Agreed Matrix. I think technology requirements should stand for diplo capabilities.
Meleager Feb 19, 2006, 05:50 PM The turn still hasn't ended (another hour and a bit to go). It actually seems fairer this way because it means that the time when the turn ends changes, meaning that its fairer for people in different time zones.
robboo Feb 19, 2006, 07:04 PM I agree..all technology constraints for any type of trade must be followed.
Tubby Rower Feb 19, 2006, 07:39 PM turn 3 has started about 30 minutes ago....
gareed on the techs needed for in game trade goes with out of game talk/trade.
DaveShack Feb 20, 2006, 11:43 PM turn 4 has started.
RegentMan Feb 22, 2006, 12:37 AM Nothing like playing turn five while listening to Rock Me Amadeus... :)
DaveMcW Feb 23, 2006, 11:09 PM 3700 BC: Buddhism has been founded in a distant land!
Robi D Feb 24, 2006, 06:07 AM 3700 BC: Buddhism has been founded in a distant land!
Obviously someone that started with mystisim. Would Bengeance, BCLG, Theoden or Mauer like to own up :) or maybe it was AI Gahndi?
Tubby Rower Feb 24, 2006, 06:20 AM I cannot lie.... I popped both Mysticism and Meditation in two consecutive turns.
Whomp Feb 24, 2006, 07:39 AM Come on Tubs. I don't think I've ever seen religious techs popped.
RegentMan Feb 24, 2006, 07:53 AM Discovered my first foreigner. One down... sixteen to go.
robboo Feb 24, 2006, 09:00 AM Discovered my first foreigner. One down... sixteen to go.
<gulp> Be nice if its me. :)
BCLG100 Feb 24, 2006, 11:11 AM Obviously someone that started with mystisim. Would Bengeance, BCLG, Theoden or Mauer like to own up :) or maybe it was AI Gahndi?
soon as i remember my password ill check if its me :D
Tubby Rower Feb 24, 2006, 03:54 PM I've met someone as well :mischief:
btw, I was curious why I got a message while it was loading that my version didn't match yours. I have 1.52.... I checked the updates and there are none available.... are you testing an early version of a new patch?
DaveShack Feb 24, 2006, 04:27 PM btw, I was curious why I got a message while it was loading that my version didn't match yours. I have 1.52.... I checked the updates and there are none available.... are you testing an early version of a new patch?
This is probably due to the autolog mod being different versions. It would fail to load the save if it were a different patch version. :mischief:
Robi D Feb 25, 2006, 02:52 AM A new turn has begun. It was Bengeance who founded Buddism as he has a little budda icon next to his name now, also some has founded Hinduism this turn, so i guess someone will be seeing a lot of missionaries headed there way:)
Matrix Feb 25, 2006, 04:34 AM I saw it too. Why has Bengeance a Buddhism icon next to him and Tubby not a Hinduism icon?
By the way, of all the 17 opponents, I of course had to meet an AI.
Robi D, concerning your signature:
Original lyrics by Nirvana, from the song Territorial Pissings of the album Nevermind:
Just because you're paranoid
Don't mean they're not after you
;)
Gyathaar Feb 25, 2006, 04:56 AM I saw it too. Why has Bengeance a Buddhism icon next to him and Tubby not a Hinduism icon?
I am guessing it simply means Tubby didnt switch to a state religion.. :p
Robi D Feb 25, 2006, 06:01 AM I saw it too. Why has Bengeance a Buddhism icon next to him and Tubby not a Hinduism icon?

Robi D, concerning your signature:
;)
Well the icon only showed up on the new turn, so obviously the game only updates these things in between turns, so next turn we will see who went Hindu. Also i would think you would be happy to meet an AI, they are a lot more predictable :)
BCLG100 Mar 01, 2006, 09:30 AM for some reason the game wont let me back in and ive tried my password and even if i was wrong i only use a small selection of passwords and none of them work so dont know whats going on.
DaveShack Mar 01, 2006, 12:14 PM for some reason the game wont let me back in and ive tried my password and even if i was wrong i only use a small selection of passwords and none of them work so dont know whats going on.
When I get home tonight I'll kick you out, and then you can rejoin by taking over the AI that picks up your civ.
Anyone else having problems?
robboo Mar 01, 2006, 12:51 PM next turn just started....
I did a test....incorrect password followed by correct password will work. BCGL..you must of screwed up somewheres..:) or Daves computer doesnt like you.
RegentMan Mar 01, 2006, 04:54 PM Ooo... two more civs in one turn. Interesting...
BCLG100 Mar 01, 2006, 05:21 PM When I get home tonight I'll kick you out, and then you can rejoin by taking over the AI that picks up your civ.
Anyone else having problems?
k sorry for the inconvenience.
Meleager Mar 01, 2006, 11:28 PM @ BCLG, did you loko at the Options or Personal Info screens?
BCLG100 Mar 02, 2006, 12:09 PM @ BCLG, did you loko at the Options or Personal Info screens?
i honestly dont remember but if i did it must have been by accident, i can only remember looking at the science screen.
Robi D Mar 02, 2006, 10:16 PM Its kinda funny that we haven't finished a turn within the 24hr limit yet
Tubby Rower Mar 03, 2006, 04:32 AM Theoden and mauer were the slackers this past turn. Whomp & I watched the clock count down to 0 and they were the two that hadn't ended their turn yet.
I'd suggest that we do a 2-3 strikes and your kicked policy (unless you are on vacataion or away and posted here of course). If they would have played and ended their turn we could have shaved 4 hours at least off of the turn.
BCLG100 Mar 03, 2006, 09:18 AM is India as AI still open?
robboo Mar 03, 2006, 09:29 AM I met an AI...scared the crap out of me. I sat there going. "You are not on the list. No one is named that in the game"..then it hit me..you Idiot its an AI. Hopefully he makes a lovely buffer and prebuilds some cities for me:D
I should drink my coffee before playing...
Robi D Mar 03, 2006, 04:01 PM is India as AI still open?
All the AI's are open
DaveShack Mar 03, 2006, 09:02 PM However... I'd rather you rejoin the civ you had before.
Meleager Mar 03, 2006, 09:39 PM The game asked me to set a password this turn? I already had a password. The game also had already played my turn. Was I kicked by accident or something?
DaveShack Mar 03, 2006, 11:05 PM The game asked me to set a password this turn? I already had a password. The game also had already played my turn. Was I kicked by accident or something?
Sorry, I was killing another program and tried to hit its "x" button again, it disappeared and pitboss was underneath.
Mauer Mar 04, 2006, 09:40 AM My apologies everyone. Indeed, I was one of the slackers. The wife has pneumonia and the little one has had a fever. I'll keep on it a little better though. Again, I offer my apologies.
robboo Mar 04, 2006, 09:42 AM Its ok man..take care your wife and kid...you cant load an autosave for them. This is just a game.
Tubby Rower Mar 04, 2006, 10:56 AM yes mauer take care of your family. Real people come first.. we are just words and avatars on your computer.
Tubby Rower Mar 04, 2006, 01:28 PM What are the limits of talking to others? we can do the following as far as I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong)
- give cardinal directions as well as tile distances to stuff.
- can we share who else we have met?
- and of course fight each other
BCLG100 Mar 04, 2006, 01:53 PM However... I'd rather you rejoin the civ you had before.
well i'll keep trying but i cant do much if it wont let me.
Meleager Mar 04, 2006, 10:24 PM Sorry, I was killing another program and tried to hit its "x" button again, it disappeared and pitboss was underneath.
 that's alright, everything was qued (sic, its a horrible work to spell  ) in advance anyway.
classical_hero Mar 04, 2006, 11:35 PM  that's alright, everything was qued (sic, its a horrible work to spell  ) in advance anyway.
Your speeling is atrocious. The word not work is queued. Sometimes it does make me shiver watching you spell.
Robi D Mar 05, 2006, 12:27 AM What are the limits of talking to others? we can do the following as far as I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong)
- give cardinal directions as well as tile distances to stuff.

I pretty much agree with that, you just shouldn't be able to do things like give screenshots etc. until you can share maps in the game and so on. I've run into 6 people so far, but whether i share who it is will depend on how nice they are to me :)
Meleager Mar 05, 2006, 12:33 AM Your speeling is atrocious. The word not work is queued. Sometimes it does make me shiver watching you spell.
It's my typing mostly. I do know how to spell work, um I mean, word. ;)
Robi D Mar 05, 2006, 01:05 AM  I've hit the lead. Can see that lasting for long but at least i've been no.1 for a turn[party]
Tubby Rower Mar 05, 2006, 04:42 PM connection timed out. Is it still running?
Also can I share with others who I have met?
robboo Mar 05, 2006, 07:48 PM Timed out still... 8:45 Central
Good thing I was only going back for a look at my technology tree...
Bengeance Mar 05, 2006, 09:58 PM I've been timed out as well.
Meleager Mar 05, 2006, 10:50 PM Mine timed out too
DaveShack Mar 06, 2006, 01:03 AM I'm away from home, wonder if my wife rebooted the machine or something... I'll ask her next time I call.
Whomp Mar 07, 2006, 02:23 PM Are we still timed out? I forgot to look last night.
robboo Mar 07, 2006, 03:08 PM we were 4 hours ago. "Noonish" central.
Matrix Mar 08, 2006, 06:19 AM I still cannot log in. That's quite problematic, because I'm going on holiday till sunday and only have a few hours left to play and set things up for the following turns...
Tubby Rower Mar 08, 2006, 06:23 AM From what I read in DS's post he's away on business. Matrix, is there anyone that you could get to play for you? I'd hate to see someone get screwed because of this.
Another option is that DS could kick you once he gets it back up so that the AI could play for you.
DaveShack Mar 08, 2006, 09:11 PM My wife doesn't think she did anything to it, but the kids sometimes play one of their games which can only run on my system. She's not civ literate nor is pitboss user friendly, so Friday night is the best I can do. Guess I should have traded a little more sleep for installing a secure remote control application. That will be something to look into before the next business trip.
Whomp Mar 08, 2006, 09:15 PM No probs Dave. Since I'm a computer illiterate Tubby will tell me what you said but do we know whether the game continues in game?
Robi D Mar 08, 2006, 09:18 PM No probs Dave. Since I'm a computer illiterate Tubby will tell me what you said but do we know whether the game continues in game?
The game should autosave at the end of each turn, so it should be too difficult to take it back to the turn we were up to.
Tubby Rower Mar 09, 2006, 04:33 AM @ Whomp, Here is your translation.....the kids stuck an ear of corn in the CD drive to slice it in half
Tubby Rower Mar 09, 2006, 04:38 AM As much as I hate to say this.....
Dave, can you kick me so that the AI can waste my turns over the weekend? I'll be leaving Friday morning and won't be back until Monday. All this is happening right at a tech transition too :gripe:
I hope the AI picks Fusion because I really need that Great Engineer.
EDIT:: Nevermind about the kicking. I'll find someone to play for me.
Furiey Mar 11, 2006, 08:20 AM Could someone confirm if the game is running or not please, I'm trying to play Tubby's turn and all I get is connection timed out.
I've been getting it since approx 13:00 GMT, but it's the first time I've tried connecting so it could be me. I've even tried disabling my firewall etc completely after adding a rule to permit Civ access wherever and however didn't work.
Whomp Mar 11, 2006, 08:27 AM Fur-I think we've been timed out since Dave went out of town. Possibly today sometime?
Furiey Mar 11, 2006, 08:47 AM Thanks Whomp, I wasn't sure if that was still the case or if it was just me.....
DaveShack Mar 11, 2006, 10:59 AM It should be live again. If you're still having troubles I'll stop and restart the server.
RegentMan Mar 11, 2006, 11:04 AM It still times out for me. Perhaps I need to wait awhile for it to work?
Furiey Mar 11, 2006, 11:11 AM Still timing out for me....
Whomp Mar 11, 2006, 11:12 AM Me too Dave...
DaveShack Mar 11, 2006, 12:26 PM Rebooted. (and some more to get way past 10 characters)
BCLG100 Mar 11, 2006, 12:32 PM guess all these problems make me glad we didnt choose pitboss, would anyone want to try a pitboss with the new patch when it comes out?
DaveMcW Mar 11, 2006, 01:42 PM I'm still timing out. Is your IP the same?
DaveShack Mar 11, 2006, 04:26 PM 68.63.191.119
Furiey Mar 11, 2006, 04:42 PM nearly but not quite the same....
Meleager Mar 11, 2006, 06:18 PM :woohoo: It worked :woohoo:
Missed quite a few turns though :/
RegentMan Mar 12, 2006, 01:25 AM Woot! Thanks for getting that fixed, Dave.
Furiey Mar 12, 2006, 06:16 AM Yep, worked for me too :D
robboo Mar 12, 2006, 06:39 AM ahhh Good to be back. So thats what I was researching..I need to write these things down.
Meleager Mar 12, 2006, 08:24 PM Can you update the OP with the new IP address. :)
DaveMcW Mar 13, 2006, 04:49 PM More timing out. Another IP change? :mischief:
peter grimes Mar 13, 2006, 06:06 PM Are any of you interested in letting us lurkers see how you're all doing?
Posting some summaries and screenshots in spoilers (spoilers always in quotes, of course!) could be a great way to pass the time while waiting for the server to reboot... or whatever it is that happens when people start posting 'connection timed out'
[/lurking]
DaveShack Mar 13, 2006, 06:13 PM More timing out. Another IP change? :mischief:
My provider could be yanking it around on me, no idea. I'll check when I get home.
Whomp Mar 13, 2006, 06:53 PM Peter I'd have no issues posting spoiler info.
If it's on the honor system and everyone agrees, of course.
If not I can pm you my spoiler.
DaveMcW Mar 13, 2006, 09:42 PM If you're really interested in the game, there's a few AI spots still open!
DaveShack Mar 13, 2006, 10:07 PM IP is now 68.63.191.219
Time for that conversation with my provider...:crazyeye:
Meleager Mar 14, 2006, 12:11 AM Can I please ask very nicely if the IP address can be put in the OP...
Now as for spoilers, here's one... but no looking if you are playing :nono: or one of my legions and his shiny sword will use you as a play thing :spank:
Quite alot has already happened, so I won't address it all at once. Here is my starting position:

The first person I met was Rodi, greece. We have scince formed what is becoming a very close alliance between two nations with early UUs. We are already planning our first war against Matrix. Scince he is known to be a good player and we are scared of him :scared:
Tubby Rower Mar 14, 2006, 05:24 AM I'll take some screen shots and post over at CDZ in my forum over there. Anyone can access it. I'll post a link here once I get it up tonight.
Spoilers have to be on the honor system. And for those of you playing....if you feel the need to cheat, then you are proving nothing and you can whip me if you want. But if I beat you and you cheated, then you'd feel really bad then. So I guess the question is to you, "Do you feel lucky punk?"
Matrix Mar 14, 2006, 05:54 AM Ouch, I played my first turn since march 6th. Luckily my research continued (I've set a path), but I believe my capital hasn't built anything for a couple of turns. :undecide:
Robi D Mar 14, 2006, 06:41 AM Maybe we can start a seperate spoiler thread that way anyone whose is interested in following the progress of the game can find it all in one location
Tubby Rower Mar 14, 2006, 06:49 AM Ouch, I played my first turn since march 6th. Luckily my research continued (I've set a path), but I believe my capital hasn't built anything for a couple of turns. :undecide:
Luckily we had a few days of the game being offline while you were gone. I'd suggest everyone get comfortable with the queuing system in [civ4] it can and does save you a lot of heartache if you are away for a little while.
Tubby Rower Mar 14, 2006, 02:03 PM btw, for those interested in keeping up with Tubby-nation. I have posted a thread in my forum at CDZ to keep people up to date (relatively) with what I'm up to.
WARNING::: you will be labeled a loser and forever branded as a cheater if you are caught looking at this (or obtaining this info) while still playing the game. That includes anyone whom I'm at anytime partnered with....

Matrix Mar 14, 2006, 02:28 PM I think I'll do the same, when I have time. ;)
DaveMcW Mar 14, 2006, 04:40 PM No luck with that IP!
RegentMan Mar 15, 2006, 05:07 PM IP is now 68.63.191.219
Did you try that IP? That one worked for me. Although the issue could have very well been fixed between our posts.
DaveMcW Mar 15, 2006, 05:11 PM Yep, it works now.

Is that meant to be a hint ;)
Tubby Rower Mar 16, 2006, 04:34 AM All Lurkers please read:
This is mainly for the un-initiated in MP spoiler threads.......You are allowed to visit all of the spoilers, but please do not taint other players with information you got by reading another spoiler. This hasn't happened yet, but with interest arising in spoilers, there could be some cross-contamination with lurkers.
Please just be careful with what you post in people's spoilers. If in doubt, leave it out.
Matrix Mar 16, 2006, 05:17 AM You could also simply join instead of reading spoilers. :mischief:
BCLG100 Mar 16, 2006, 09:21 AM You could also simply join instead of reading spoilers. :mischief:
is there still space? thats why i hadnt joined nor have i really looked at the spoilers either.
Tubby Rower Mar 16, 2006, 09:22 AM Yes... there are at least 2 maybe 3 AI that are still available last I checked
grs Mar 16, 2006, 10:16 AM I joined as India (was AI played) and could log in once and enterd a password. Now that I try to log in for a second time, it does not take my password. I am very sure I did not mistype and I already tried w/o caps, whats wrong?
Tubby Rower Mar 16, 2006, 10:19 AM did you change your details? if so, it corrupts your password. You might need to be kicked and try again.
grs Mar 16, 2006, 10:22 AM I did not change anything, but I had a look at the "your details" and "game details" page.
grs Mar 16, 2006, 10:30 AM Ok, found out that it just gets md5 hashed (good programers joke). Problem is fixed please don't kick!
Tubby Rower Mar 16, 2006, 10:33 AM How did you fix the problem? It could be useful to know for future games.
