How fast should we play?

I would have no Idea the difference, so can someone point it out to me.

I voted normal, because it seems you can't go wrong with a setting so named :)

Each of the settings has a different number of turns in the game. Normal is obviously the normal setting, with a quick game having less turns (meaning research and hammer costs are down). Epic is longer than normal (research and hammer costs are higher than normal). Marathon, I believe, takes a normal game for each era.

The settings apply to each game, be it singleplayer, PBEM, or Pitboss.

So it effects the research and building as well ... will wait for someone who has tried the options ... but default would probably do it.

EDIT ... it may also be wise to discuss this in relation to our choice of civs ... I guess an early UU civ would want to draw out the ages.

The biggest difference is how long the game lasts.

Quick: 320 turns
Normal: 440 turns
Epic: 660 turns
Marathon: 1200 turns

Assuming 48 hours per turn, the game will last...

Quick: 1.8 years
Normal: 2.4 years
Epic: 3.6 years
Marathon: 6.6 years

The next biggest difference is in unit movement. On Quick your axemen get about 50 turns of movement before they are obsolete, while on Marathon they get 180 turns of movement. Slower speeds favor warmongers.

Excellent. Considering that tunrs often last long with the [c3c] MTDG, i Would say that the shorter the better, but it really depends on what our goals are for victory. We will need to get a goal up so that we can vote for the one we would like to have so that we get the best victory plans.

Keep in mind that the game very likely may not last until the end of turns. Victory could be achieved much sooner.

For that reason, I'm leaning towards Normal or even Epic.

Very true.

Normal is probably best for the Civ4MTDG game. (having absolutely no frame of reference whatsoever!)

I voted normal ... simple reason there are so many new concepts and strategies to explore ... let's do it in a 'normal' environment ... but wow ... what a great game to be able to tweek so much

Hi,

as it stands now, the current 1.52 patch has some quirks that very much favors war-mongering on epic speed, not only because units have more turns before they obsolete, but also because unit costs do not scale up the same as building costs do, making building units more effective.

Quick is really quick - no long war possible, and favors builders in a major way.

So I vote normal, because (until the next patch comes out) it is the most game-balanced speed, and because it might be the most realistic speed to get the game actually finished. ;)
