The purpose of this thread is to request audio from the Sound team:

Audio required:

(none right now, thanks guys!)

(themes are what plays when you are in the diplomacy window with that civ, it needs to be 20-60 seconds and loop)

I was just thinking: Do we need religion-specific ambient sounds? Like wails emanating from Veil/Overlords cities when you zoom in on them, marching from Order cities, leaves rustling from the Fellowship, hammers ringing from the Runes?

Different chants, like the ones from conversions in Vanilla? I love the Jewish chant, I once converted to Judaism just so I could spread it far and wide...

Religion specific ambient sounds would be nice, as long as they weren't obtrusive and/or repetitive. I don't zoom all the way in to my cities that much, but such sounds could carry over into the city screen. The Jewish chant is cool, but it mught be aggravating on repeat every 5 seconds. ;)

Yeah, that's a trap one has to avoid. You should try zooming around the map a bit, the way the ambient sounds change depending on your zoom is really quite a neat touch.

How are copyright rules? Is any music allowed, even from cd's, since it's a non-commercial mod?

How are copyright rules? Is any music allowed, even from cd's, since it's a non-commercial mod?

My rule of thumb (and only my rule, im pretty sure im violating copyright anyway) is that I use anything for the sound bytes (I claim fair use) but I only use full sounds for music that the owner is allowing public downloads of. So I use Enya clips, but I wouldn't use an Enya song for the soundtrack.

Corlindale

Fair enough. I've just digged up an old cd with the soundtrack of the game CaveWars - an extremely crappy games which is ages old, but the music is pretty nice, especially fitting for the darker civs. I'll try to cut out a few sound segments.
EDIT: It'll have to be tomorrow. Can't find my stupid audio editor program, and I must be off to bed before too long.

Any plans for a new sound when an Adept turns desert into plains? I can't place what Vanilla sound is playing now, but it doesn't work well IMO.

Any plans way down the road to have someone (Kael) do a voiceover instead the Nimoy we get when the game is being generated? I figure you could have a 30-60 second spiel about what FfH is.

Also, how about the same with Tech quotes? I think that would be cool as hell.

I didnt ask, but I hope so. It would be weird to hear piglet describing the fall of Bhall.

Insteresting, is anyone else having this? It should be the same sound as in phase 1 but it is speced for a 3d spell now instead of a 2d.

Something that is very needed is a new sound for the Copper Golem (or all golems?). When you select them it's defaulted to a vanilla sound I can't quite place. It doesn't work though.

I request some sounds for the War machine...

Is there a way in game to link the sound to the action? Would running over a tree tile signal the sawing, destroying a hamlet trigger the slaughtering of innocents, and so on? Or a 1-2 second combo of all of those sounds?

Or is this a sound for when you select the unit and it moves? Is that a different sound?

Sorry, but I'm an audio noob...

Chalid
Apr 18, 2006, 08:46 AM
There are sounds defined for all actions that are linked to animations. So there would be one sound then the thing moves, one when it dies, one on attack (pillaging i think is an attack) and so forth.

woodelf
Apr 18, 2006, 08:55 AM
Okay. So gears turning when it moves, gears grinding or metal screeching when it dies, and mayhem when it attacks. I'll see if my buddy can come up with something.

I will have an onMove() for the war machine and I can kick out special sounds for wiping a forest or a hamlet so i would love to have those. But as chalid says we will need general sounds for the normal animations too.

Ambiant, natural (or natural twisted in unnatural ways). The length is perfect, dont make them any longer or shorter. I checked in 6 spell sounds out of the last batch.

It's probably way too late to suggest music and Cirque de Soleil is pretty unique and interesting, but I could not help but mention King Crimson for evocative instrumental music. Some are pretty sinister sounding and fits well for evil civs and religions.

If interested I can try to create fragments of mp3s that might fit well.

Some of their instrumental works to check out:

Devil's Triangle, In the Wake of Poseidon
Lark's Tongue in Aspic Part One
The Talking Drum, Lark's Tongue in Aspic
Sheltering Sky, Discipline

As long as no one makes money of the mod - it'd be fair use "Omaging".

Every song used is a sort of tribute to that person, because it'd be put into a story we all love...sort of thing.

Well, when you add a copyrighted song to a mod, you are giving it away for free. And aslong as the makers of the song or the producers, or the publishers of the song doesnt want the song to be given out for free it is basically music piracy.

...

We're playing a game in which pirates are loved. Anyway, if you cut out "peices of the song" its not the whole song, in fact, it may drive people to go and BUY the song.

Regardless, im fairly certain it's covered under US Fair use termenology.

True true. I do have one "illegal" song in the mod. That title track "Let me Fall" is from one of the Cirque du Soleil cd's and it was to perfect to pass up. Outside of that everything is either freely downloadable by the copywright owner or a small (less than 10 second) clip out of a copywrited work.

In similiar news I had honor to trade a few emails with Rich Douglas (http://www.richdouglas.com/) yesterday. For those that don't recognize the name Rich is the sound designer/music composer for Paradigm entertainment and he did all the music for the eclipse mod which is the heart of all the music in Fall from Heaven. For a long time it was the only music in FfH but over time I added other tracks as well.

Rich is an amazingly nice guy who okay'ed the use of his music in the mod. He was rightfully miffed that I didn't do a very good job of crediting him (sorry Rich!) and although I had a thank you in the readme with a link to the eclipse mod I didnt thank Rich directly as I should have. Im trying to do a better job of crediting the sources I use and I offered to pull Rich's songs from the mod if thats what he would prefer. He said that I didn't have to do that (did I mention he was amazingly nice?) and he wished us luck with FfH.

Definitly a highlight in the project for me because I have long been a fan of his work. Just the chance to trade emails with him was very cool.
