View Full Version : Idea for Realistic Earth Map

As in, you can keep going North, and eventually go south without changing direction.

It would work by making X and Y axis looping, then make the north pole at the center of the world. Then surround the edges with Antartica, and make the continents where they are supposed to go, and to scale.

Yes? No? Maybe?

You'll end up with alot of ocean, and Europe will be badly crowded, but other than that, it should work well enough.

Just like any other world map? ;)

a unique map at the least :D

No, like any normal world map squared. :p

bah- what would that be good for? Only works properly with globes

Well, it mimics a globe, doesn't it?

Where exactly would your south pole be?

Bluemofia

Umm... Good question.

It would be kind of spread over all of the edge of the map?

Like it is now :) I think this is a fun idea, but lacking on the "realistic" part :)
Most realistic things aren`t very practical ;)

By linking the North- and South Poles directly we wouldn't get a globe world, but something like a cylinder... :|

No, having the north pole be at the center of the map, and the south pole at the edges. Then enable X and Y axis looping.

I know it doesn't change the shape, but my idea is just basically a view of the earth from the top on down.

Something like this, except it includes Antartica, and all of the other stuff down on the southern Hemisphere.

x loops to x and y loops to y. Think about what happens at your south pole, both in terms of area and in terms of movement. It would be an interesting map, I agree. Not at all realistic.

I just tested it using a globe, and it seems to work realisticly.

For the record, an map with X and Y wrapping is geometrically a torus. A Euclidean 2-torus, to be exact. My Space Opera Scenario (currently in production) uses a such map too.

there's already a map biq out there like this proposal. it's called "Owain's World" and is really good
