Methos Feb 26, 2006, 01:10 PM :woohoo: I actually managed to take a #1 spot! Yeah, it was only on Settler, but first attempts at HoF. Also a #2 and #4 spot as well. Didn't manage to finish my Noble game, but I'm working on it.
I must admit that I'm finding playing HoF games is an excellent way to learn. After I finish a game I find myself thinking on how I could have shaved a turn here, or what I should and shouldn't have done. Looks like I'm hooked.
I'm wondering if the lower amount of submissions this month was due to lack of activity in the past gauntlet?

It certainly didn't help. That went a long way towards the current settings. I had something else planned but decided to delay it another update.
Big_Ben Feb 26, 2006, 02:40 PM CRAP!!!!!!! I didn't notice that I left it on Noble. No wonder I did so well with the gauntlet. That had to be the ONLY gauntlet attempt I played that wasn't deity. Wish I would have noticed that, would have made another one.
Methos Feb 26, 2006, 03:10 PM On the statistics page in the Updates sub-menu there is a list of each submitted game. On the right side is the place the game took with a second placement below it with an 'Any'. What does the 'Any' mean and where is the table it seems to indicate?
You can see in the image below what I'm confused about. Where the map size should be located is the 'Any'. What's even more confusing is I believe every submission on that page had the same thing.

Ljdjr Feb 26, 2006, 03:53 PM What does the 'Any' mean
That means that of all the submissions, any map size, that were Settler and Cultural you are in 9th place. On Duel maps you are 1st. Congratulations!
killercane Feb 26, 2006, 03:54 PM It means it is #9 in any size map for that victory condition/level. Edit: Crosspost :).

The "any" is on the map size icon, so that means any map size or regardless of map size. So that game is the 9th best finish date of all the Settler difficulty, Cultural victories. :goodjob:
Ljdjr Feb 26, 2006, 04:03 PM But by my count he's 10th fastest in any?

Is there a game speed modifier?

303463 points?? wow...
How do you manage to win and recieve so many? I don't think I ever got even half of it (not counting though ;-) )
:king:

Is there a game speed modifier?:hmm: I see what you mean. We'll take a look. Thanks for pointing it out. :goodjob:
Methos Feb 26, 2006, 04:41 PM But by my count he's 10th fastest in any?
He's correct. I'm also coming up with 10th.
Thanks for the answers.
Denniz Feb 26, 2006, 05:03 PM He's correct. I'm also coming up with 10th.
Thanks for the answers.
Dianthus, explained it. DavidForthOffer has 3 entries that were eligible for the top ten Settler, Cultural, any map. Only the first two count. So 9th is correct.
Big_Ben Feb 26, 2006, 06:54 PM Grendal: There are only a few entries that have gotten that high of a score. Almost all of them (I could be wrong) use the anarchy exploit that allow you to have a domination or conquest victory early enough to milk your score and get it that high. I haven't checked but I would say that highest score not using the anarchy exploit is probably around 150,000.
ChangHao Feb 27, 2006, 01:10 AM It certainly didn't help. That went a long way towards the current settings. I had something else planned but decided to delay it another update.
hi, you mean that the gauntlet submissions are not yet reflected in the tables? i noticed that there weren't any high scores in the deity huge domination...
Big_Ben Feb 27, 2006, 02:07 AM He means that there are no completed gauntlet entries that met the gauntlet criteria. I thought I finished it but I must have left mine set on noble instead of deity, so mine is in the noble table. Which sucks for me, but oh well.
There were only a handful of people trying to compete in the gauntlet last time.

expanding fast is the key.:)

The "303463 points" by Turkish_Guy that Grendal was refering to was very well played and he didn't use any exploits that I know of. Very good game! Congrats!:goodjob:
GrendelS Feb 27, 2006, 06:16 PM Moonsinger et al, I don't dispute the rightfullness, but I'm honestly surprised that there can be such differences (i.e. a game I played today I totally and scruplessly smashed my opponent 600AD and got only 23000 points). Expanding fast is what I did, too, but I guess I'll better take a look at the save to learn from the best, huh? ;-)
Big_Ben Feb 27, 2006, 07:10 PM Oh, I didn't check his entry to see whether the exploit was used, I apologize.
As for getting a high score, it isn't about a fast finish. That helps, but you have to milk out your score as well. You have to get a lot of land area and a very nice population without accidentally getting a domination victory. Then when you think you are near max, you end the game.
I have hit 195k on a huge noble win (forgot to change that) with an early domination win, 260 AD. I could have milked out the score and pumped it up to around 400k if I wanted to I think. Would have ended around 400-500AD instead.
ChangHao Feb 28, 2006, 02:42 AM i'm on the table, but score sucks.... where can i find milking strategies? any threads to reccommend?

Check out Shillen's posts at this link (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=149958). That was pretty much the basic to milking. I decided to apply Shillen's method and got 98K on a dual-settler-map with ease. On a huge-settler-map, I got over 100K at 1000BC; therefore, I think 300K is very do-able. Btw, I'm tracing A_Turkish_Guy by playing as Asoka (spiritual => zero turn in anarchy => no anarchy exploit;) ). IMO, the Fast Worker is incredible; I think it's perfect for exploring and popping huts.
ChangHao Mar 01, 2006, 09:17 AM thanks for the link!
agreed, asoka rocks. organised gives $ benefit without having to spam cottages. it's easier to implement, and is great for huge empires.
i believe that fast workers build faster too. it seems that every improvement requires a certain number of movement points.
don't you want to use that precious worker to chop more than to explore?
asoka was my man in the huge diplo deity recently.
Moonsinger Mar 01, 2006, 10:09 AM don't you want to use that precious worker to chop more than to explore?
But by beating the AIs to the goodie huts, it probably will gain more than it can chop.;)

that is very true.fast workers are great.if you are lucky and get a worker from the huts you can make very big differences.(ex:my last settler game with osaka is very good.with fast workers i got 5 settlers ,4 workers ,2 scouts ,600 gold and 2 warriors from the huts.).i think my 234k settler game is not very good.my new game is much more better.(better than my new 368k warlord game ).i am now at the same point with the warlord game and maybe 60 turns better for techs.Moonsinger is right that it will go 300k +. :) ;)
A_Turkish_Guy Mar 03, 2006, 04:54 AM i think 1000 bc 100k points is not very high for 300k .maybe 120-130k is good.and for 1 AD i think 200k points without biology is a good goal for 300k points for settler.:D ;)
Kalleyao Mar 06, 2006, 06:25 AM What happened to beta update V and VI?
Dianthus Mar 06, 2006, 06:39 AM What happened to beta update V and VI?
I guess superslug (and most of the rest of us!) can't do 4+1 in roman numerals . I've corrected the thread title.
