How often do you micromanage a city?

View Full Version : How often do you Micromanage each city? Fihri Feb 27, 2006, 07:00 AM How often do you micromanage a city? Zombie69 Feb 27, 2006, 07:04 AM Every single turn. colony Feb 27, 2006, 07:11 AM At the start: Constantly Once I have about 6 cities I'll slow down, as I'm generally invading someone at that point, and I find MM tedious but necessary, generally checking every few turns, or a fter a building/unit is done Later on, when I'm reaching the domination limit I'll generally let the governor's loose, just because they don't have enough time left to do any real damage:p benjai Feb 27, 2006, 07:16 AM Depends on how badly you want to win... CurtSibling Feb 27, 2006, 08:12 AM I make sure I have the right amount of specialists and balance of growth when going cottage crazy. I plan to not fall behind once my civ is up and running, some fine tuning may happen as the need arises. . SuperBeaverInc. Feb 27, 2006, 08:20 AM Never. I'm too lazy. :p Holbek Feb 27, 2006, 09:02 AM Mostly when something changes. A new tech, a new improvement, a pop-point or a building. When under siege I do it constantly. aviator99_uk Feb 27, 2006, 09:13 AM Far too often because the idiot governor keeps producing specialists I don't want. Stangler Feb 27, 2006, 09:34 AM Not enough, and it is one reason I have issues. Too often I let a city grow too big and produce a useless person when I could have caused the city to go stagnant and start work on some GP. But I have chosen Philisophical civs to help me concentrate on it a bit more. Next I will pick a Spiritual civ so I can work on religion and civics. I think war is easy even without aggressive so no real need to pick those civs. The way I look at it, I can get better by trying to take advantage of each leader's traits. I am still addicted to the Creative trait though. StrideCollosus Feb 27, 2006, 09:55 AM At the start I MM constantly until I've got my first cities up and running, then I just leave the guvnor to get on with it, occassionally using the emphasise buttons. Other than that I can't be bothered, even on higher levels, unless I'm aiming for specific GP points or something significant happens, e.g. war, new tech, I realise I've reached happiness limits, etc. Dueck Feb 27, 2006, 10:31 AM Every single turn. Every single turn you go through all of your cities? I'm such a lazy leader :D hence the "Nero" rating. ChangHao Feb 27, 2006, 11:10 AM usually, i play to enjoy, and that's why i never ever look at what is in a city, except to set the "focus on XXX". i automate all my workers. when i play to win (eg HOF), i micro more. even then, citizens will pick up a new tile after building an improvement, so no problem there. fuji Feb 27, 2006, 02:00 PM At the start, every city, untill it gets obvious that i'm going to win or lose (I hardly ever continue then...). With this i mean the city micromanaging, i always control my workers, except some who I use to built roads (there's a auto option for this so) in some games the auto-managing almost ruins my game, it completly neglects your startegy and tends to built to many farms IMO. jray Feb 27, 2006, 02:22 PM Does anyone know of a mod out there that can notify you when one of your cities increases in population? That's my favorite time to micro-manage, and it's really frustrating that you have to constantly check on this manually. The enhanced domestic advisor mod helps a lot, but you still need to check BEFORE each turn ends to see which cities are GOING TO increase the next turn. There's no way to tell for sure which cities have just increased on the current turn, except by looking for ones with food = 0 or food = 1/2 max with granaries (but even this is affected by other conditions, and not totally reliable). Crighton Feb 27, 2006, 02:32 PM ah, if only we could shoot the Gov. I wonder if that would help his performance. Cidron Feb 27, 2006, 08:53 PM Dead people, performing better than the living? Is that what you are askin Crighton? Might work. Dont you wish you had a "Produce <specific type> great person option instead of the more generic produce great person (note the non specific). Its kinda irratating to produce a great scientist when you are researching Future Tech x. It simply is a component of "Start Golden Age" for me at that time. Not what I wanted out of my GPs. *grumble* Yzman Feb 27, 2006, 09:53 PM I never do really, unless there is something I really want. too much work for me. Cheeze Feb 27, 2006, 10:01 PM Yes! I'm in the majority! (Aka whenever it finishes something, unless it's a long project such as a wonder). Rast Feb 28, 2006, 03:44 AM I usually MM whenever it finished building something. I would like to be able to do it when it grows a population, but unfortunately there's no notification when this happens, which causes me to sometimes end up with an unhappy person >:( Zombie69 Feb 28, 2006, 07:45 AM Every single turn you go through all of your cities? I'm such a lazy leader :D hence the "Nero" rating. I got an Augustus Caesar rating in my first game, which is the only game that i've actually finished. All the other games i've stopped once i knew i would win (or lose in one case). Yes, every single turn, after all the units have moved, i click on my capital, see if everything is ok (production, food, hammers, tiles worked, happiness, health, specialists). Then i press the right arrow on my keyboard to get to the next city, and keep going like that until i'm back to the capital. Then i check the foreign advisor to see what the other leaders have to offer. Then i make sure my science slider is ok. I don't think you can call yourself a true micromanager unless you do this, at the very minimum. Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg regarding the amount of micromanagement i do in a game. Rex Tyrannus Feb 28, 2006, 11:30 AM Good lord, Zombie. Do you tell you workers where to scratch themselves, too? In the beginning, I'll do a check after every completed worker action, new tech, growth, or completion. Sometime in the classical age, when happiness limits aren't so crippling, I'll turn it over to the govenor. jray Feb 28, 2006, 11:59 AM I usually MM whenever it finished building something. I would like to be able to do it when it grows a population, but unfortunately there's no notification when this happens, which causes me to sometimes end up with an unhappy person >:( After doing some searching, I found a great simple mod that does exactly this (plus a few other very useful things). I tried it, and it's awesome!!! [PYTHONCOMP] Civ4lerts: Alert messages about in game events (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=157088) Zombie69 Feb 28, 2006, 12:03 PM Good lord, Zombie. Do you tell you workers where to scratch themselves, too? Kind of. I'll start them on one action, then cancel it and call for another action. This can be to improve their movement, to ensure that i get my improvements on the exact turn that i need it, or to time chops with the right buildings. |
