Yes ... i was surprised too
Dandridge Mar 03, 2006, 08:09 AM Stem, you seem to be a big fan of Mansa Musa;)
Zalcron Mar 03, 2006, 11:58 AM any room for me?
Zalcron Mar 03, 2006, 12:34 PM actually u had better count me out, i dont think i would be able to find the time for 1-2 hours everynight, sorry to muck u about.
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 03:11 AM Dan.. Mansa worked out pretty well last time ;)
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 06:18 AM Game generated. Email with details send. Today around 15.00 GMT, if ok ,we can make a session
Dandridge Mar 04, 2006, 08:09 AM Trying to connect now, but connection times out at "contacting host...". Someone's blocking?
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:13 AM Having the same problem as Dan..
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:14 AM I dont know .. we are with drib inside
try again
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:16 AM Tried 5 times already.. drib is probably a bad peer. Tell him to adjust his firewall.
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:18 AM well the potr is default 2056. drib connected ... i connect from the inside
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:19 AM Tried 5 times already.. drib is probably a bad peer. Tell him to adjust his firewall.
will do .. still if he is bad peer , your ap should hang on "connecting peer"
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:21 AM ?
Didn't quite get the point in that post.
Anyways, since I and Dan can't get in, but drib could, it is very likely that it's his firewall that's keeping us out.
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:23 AM Hmm.. well that's strange. And you're sure the address in the e-mail was correct?
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:25 AM Or then again it might be a DNS problem.. could you give us your IP-address instead?
Dandridge Mar 04, 2006, 08:25 AM I've seen these "contacting host..." issues with bad peers, too. Could connect to the address 2 hours ago, by the way. Made my first turn then. So the address is right.
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:26 AM Hmm.. well that's strange. And you're sure the address in the e-mail was correct?
Why the email adress ?
Btw i told him to step out .. so one of you guys to try to join !
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:28 AM Never mind, looked it up and didn't work that way either..
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:29 AM he said he had a firewall , told him to open 2056
On my router i have both 2056 (server) and 2057(my game) opened
i will send the ip just in case
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:30 AM I meant the domain name.. sorry 'bout that. But there's something strange about this.. Your computer isn't even responding to ping.
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:30 AM Never mind, looked it up and didn't work that way either..
Well i will step out then ...
could be me ...
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:34 AM I meant the domain name.. sorry 'bout that. But there's something strange about this.. Your computer isn't even responding to ping.
The router is blocking it .. port 7
but port 2056 and 2057 are open
Dandridge Mar 04, 2006, 08:38 AM Still no luck :(
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:40 AM I got in now.. don't know why though. Dind't change a thing
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:40 AM Still no luck :(
Now stemil is in .. i am at the pitboss waitng every one to join
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 08:43 AM Well, I stepped out, and rejoined. I've now tried leaving and rejoning again and I can't even contact the host - always gets host timed out message now
BTW - I already had port 2056 open on my firewall all the time
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:44 AM So it seems the game only lets in one player?
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 08:49 AM So it seems the game only lets in one player?
Yes its not the peers ...
I wounder if its the router ... again port 2056 , 2057 are opened
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 08:59 AM buldozer is going to open a load of ports... try again soon Dan and drib
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 09:02 AM buldozer is going to open a load of ports... try again soon Dan and drib
Well i opened them all from 2033 to the last one
I am glad only you know my IP
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 09:04 AM Well, I've just tried opening every port to my machine (not really a good idea but should prove it one way or the other), and i still can't connect
Dandridge Mar 04, 2006, 09:06 AM yeah, still stuck at contacting host...
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 09:09 AM Just a thought - are all the open ports for both UDP and TCP? Civ4 uses UDP for most things but I've got a feeling it may use TCP for initial connections etc and switch to UDP for the gameplay.
Is anyone actually in the game at the moment?

Well with my Router i am just NAting so i give the port range and the private IP adress.
Stemil is in the game , thats why you cant connect i asume .. strange seems Pitboss accepts only one outside connection
There is one user who had similiar problem
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=3583955&highlight=timeout#post3583955
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 09:21 AM Ok now i have the pitboss running on another port 2057
so the adress is now ****.no-ip.info:2057
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 09:26 AM Doesn't work for me (although Civ4 doesn't let me put the port on the end because it doesn't allow that many characters, so i had to manually do the DNS lookup and use the IP:2057 instead of the domain:2057)
Thing is, I can't believe you should have to change the port on the server. The problem in the other thread you mentioned seems to have more than one client behind the same router as the server. But in this case you're the only one there - i wonder if two external clients can connect if you (buldozer) aren't in the game?
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 09:28 AM I don't think buldozer has been in the game for a while now..
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 09:32 AM Dan.. drib got in now.. you still trying?
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 09:32 AM Well, I'm in with Stenil now - used port 2057 to connect.
Dan, could you give it a try now? You may need to type in the ip instead of the domain so you can fit the port in the box when you join.
Dandridge Mar 04, 2006, 09:34 AM No luck, still the same issue.
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 09:40 AM ok - I know people don't like giving their IP address out on public forums, but can we post the last part of our IPs because it would make it easier to look in firewall logs to see who is getting through and who is getting blocked.
My IP is x.x.173.160
I'm seeing packets from an IP x.x.250.95 (the pitboss server)
I've also got packets from the following IPs -are any of them you guys?
x.x.183.226
x.x.12.201
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 09:44 AM Nope.. neither of those is mine (mine's x.x.224.146)
Dandridge Mar 04, 2006, 09:47 AM xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 09:51 AM ok, i logged out of the game to rejoin to see if i could see any traffic in my router logs. ( i haven't seen any packets from either of the peers, only the server).
However, now I can't log in again (unable to connect to host), so presumably someone else has managed to log in?
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 09:53 AM ok, i logged out of the game to rejoin to see if i could see any traffic in my router logs. ( i haven't seen any packets from either of the peers, only the server).

Sorry i had to start the pitboss again ... now i am in and stemil
Dont forget the :2057 at the end of the IP
Stemil Mar 04, 2006, 09:54 AM Me and buldo are there currently
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 10:00 AM Me and buldo are there currently
If you guys know or use IRC we can connect to a channel to comunicate easily !
server: irc.rizon.net
channel: #civ4
PS: I am sorry to keep you guys , but if we could fix this thing to work , would be nice for the next games we make , hopefully
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 10:01 AM well, i'm stumped. The only thing I can think of is when buldoz is in the game, the connection attempts to the host are getting wrongly routed to his client. I don't think I'm connecting to the host and then failing to connect to the peers because when i type an invalid password the host doesn't kick me out, i still get a timeout (and I should get a cannot connect to peer message instead of cannot connect to host).
So, buldoz, have you got any logs showing who is connecting to you and where the packets are going? If me and Dan try connecting (and if Stemil logs out and logs in again) we need to know if the packets are reaching the correct machine.
However, even if the above is true, it doesn't make sense why stemil, me and Dan cannot seem to connect at the same time, unless one of us is not allowing UDP port 2056 or 2057 through to them. I've got about 27000 ports open at the moment, including those two so I don't think it's me. And there's no sign of either peer connecting to my machine on those ports anyway (either successfully or being blocked)
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 10:07 AM ok i will restart the pitboss , start ethereal
dribnairb Mar 04, 2006, 10:26 AM If you're there Dan, can you join us on IRC - or try rejoining the game
buldozer Mar 04, 2006, 12:14 PM Nice first session :)
Forgot to stop ethereal tho ... 200MB log file .. sweet
Next session tommorow 16GMT
Stemil Mar 05, 2006, 09:00 AM Unable to contact again :(
dribnairb Mar 05, 2006, 09:01 AM well, i was in, so i've just exited - see if you can join now. My firewall settings haven't changed since yesterday though...
If you still have problems, join us on IRC again
Stemil Mar 05, 2006, 09:03 AM Nope.. didn't help. Still hangs on contacting host. I've changed nothing.. my comps been on all the time after yesterdays session. It's still port 2057 right? (though I already tried without it at the end of the address)
dribnairb Mar 05, 2006, 09:07 AM If you're there, try again
Buldozer has changed his firewall.
Stemil Mar 05, 2006, 09:14 AM Hmm.. weird. Using port 2057 - hangs on connecting to host
Without the 2057 at the end: Our connection has been rejected because we provided invalid identification data
dribnairb Mar 05, 2006, 09:16 AM without the port you're probably actually connecting to bulldozers client, so it won't let you. Don't see why you can't reach the server though - I can with no problems. Can you join us on IRC again?
Dandridge Mar 05, 2006, 09:22 AM Can't connect. Connection times out again :(
Dandridge Mar 05, 2006, 09:30 AM Is the port still 2057?
dribnairb Mar 05, 2006, 09:33 AM same ip and port (2057)
stemil has the same problem as you. Buldozer can see some traffic using ethereal network monitor, but your connections don't have as much traffic as mine ( and mine connects fine)
Can you join us on irc?
Stemil Mar 05, 2006, 09:34 AM Yeah it's 2057.. I'm having the same problem.. we're trying to solve it. In the meanwhile be free to join us on IRC. Rizon network, #civ4
dribnairb Mar 05, 2006, 10:19 AM Dan, if you're there, try again
Stemil and I are in.
Dandridge Mar 05, 2006, 10:26 AM no, still stuck at contacting host...
Stemil Mar 05, 2006, 11:21 AM Dandridge.. We got Drib to host and it's working now. Respond when you read this
Dandridge Mar 05, 2006, 11:46 AM Have some things to do right now, but can come to play at about 19:30 GTM
dribnairb Mar 05, 2006, 11:51 AM ok, great - we'll all meet again at 19:30GMT.
If you haven't seen it Dan, use the new ip for my server (it's in your email)
Unfortunately, my machine won't be on all the time so it won't be quite as good as hosting it by buldozer, but we should at least be able to play :)
I'll leave my machine on between now and 19:30 so if you could all try logging in when you have a chance just to ensure it's still working ok.
Stemil Mar 11, 2006, 02:52 AM Sorry guys.. don't think I can make it after all :(
You can of course always play without me.. Tomorrow I would be able to play for most of the day.
Dandridge Mar 11, 2006, 05:52 AM I'm able to play on Sunday after 15 GMT.
Buldozer, haven't you set up the Pitboss yet?
buldozer Mar 11, 2006, 05:59 AM seems i have some issues with my router ...
drib was hosting the last two games
I hope we can makes some moves soon ... We havent played since tuesday :(
dribnairb Mar 11, 2006, 06:00 AM The PB is up and running on my box now - but if Stemil can't make it do we want to carry on?
If you want to try and join the game now (since we all seem to be online) we can discuss what to do there (it's easier than through the forums)
buldozer Mar 11, 2006, 07:54 AM Ok thats the latest progress
I and dribnairb decided to test a little. So i started again my dedicated PB pc and this time instead of direct play i put it in the Gspy lobby. From there we and one more guy were able to connect simultaneously , i even connect with directplay instead of Gspy. So now the game and the notifier are running and if you like to make your turn just use the IP from the no-ip.info account with the port 2057 of course. If you cant connect from the game with directplay , try from gamespy.
Tomorrow the session is scheduled for 14.00GMT. If we have problems connecting to my PB again (god knows why) i will send the savegame to drib , so we'll be able to make some turns.
Stemil Mar 12, 2006, 01:48 AM I should be able to play at 14GMT..
And I was also able to join the PB-server.. though there was no one else there at the time.
Dandridge Mar 12, 2006, 01:54 AM Like I said, I won't be able to play today untill 15 GMT.
buldozer Mar 12, 2006, 02:01 AM after 15GMT it is ... important is making some progress
Stemil Mar 12, 2006, 02:41 AM 15GMT it is..
Stemil Mar 12, 2006, 10:27 AM Seems like my game crashed.. Couldn't handle a peace deal :D
Oh well. I did have to stop anyways. When do we see this game through?
dribnairb Mar 12, 2006, 10:43 AM Well, when Stemil left the game we realised I only needed one more turn to make a cultural victory, so we let the AI play in Stemil's place. However, (unfortunately for me!) Dandrige then decided to nuke Kagoshima (which was on only about 24700 culture). This meant it was only producing about 100 per turn, so it would actually take 3 turns to win.
Fortunately, another great artist was born in Osaka anyway, and with a culture bomb in Kagoshima in 1980 it meant it reached 27000+ culture points. Along with my other two cities, this meant I got a cultural victory.
Great game guys - I can't believe a won it (and I'm sure it had a little to do with the game getting slow at the end so Stemil didn't bother attacking me), but I'll remember from now on that I won my first PitBoss game :-)
buldozer Mar 12, 2006, 10:44 AM Seems like my game crashed.. Couldn't handle a peace deal :D
Oh well. I did have to stop anyways. When do we see this game through?
LOL mine crashed too , seems drib and dan were in the diplo screen too
Anyway......
3 turn later drib won a diplo victory
So no need for restarts!
At the end my civ4 crashed again ... and the PB too ..strangly tho...
Oh well .. if you guys are up to , we can arange another game .. with somewhat different settings :goodjob:
I will be intouch ... currently i am in IRC #civ4
Dandridge Mar 12, 2006, 11:30 AM Well, this game was pure simultaneous multiplayer, which led to some stupid mistakes (like not taking seriously the rising culture of dribnairb). I really like more Pitboss games where you can make your turns whenever you want and think more about the strategy. Maybe a Pitboss game with one or two short (max 1 hour) multiplayer sessions in the beginning of the game and after that one turn every 12 hours. But it would of course take more time. One game would last several weeks/months.
Anyway the culture victory by dribnairb was really smart in this game. Cheers!
Stemil Mar 13, 2006, 02:40 AM Grats drib for the victory :)
Nice game all in all. Too bad I lost interest in the end and didn't really focus on playing. I've been in a hurry lately, and will be in the near future, so I was pretty much just anxious to see the game end.
Two major 'mistakes' in the end: I've gotten used to no one using nukes. I was actually really surprised to see them raining down. I would've had loads of time to build SDI. After the first nukes fell I lost interest in the game totally and decided to donate a great artist to drib :)
I've also never used spies in civ 4. Really goes to show how little I've played the newest version. Buldo's spy constantly destroying my SDI project got annoying.. so I decided to attack using ground forces instead. One major flaw in my general strategy was that my hammer-production was very _very_ low. Had focused a bit too much on cottages :p That was the major reason why I didn't bother building SDI and whatever wonder you need for spies..
Of course any of us could have overrun drib. A couple of flyovers with stealth bombers revealed he was still defending with samurais. A couple of modern armors would have leveled all his cities  -- Anyways, well played drib! I would never have guessed your plan hadn't the first "Tokyo has achieved legendary culture" given it away.
What really interests me is what Dan was up to in the end. I really can't think of anything he could have done to win, yet it seems he did have a plan of some kind. I was actually going to vote Dan to victory if we would have played one more session.. that's how much I wanted the game to end :crazyeye:
EDIT:
Oh and about possible future games.. I'd love to play. It was great playing against you guys. Unfortunately as I said I currently have a lot of work to do. Three major tests coming up in the next few weeks, and I really need to study. :( After the tests I would love an other round tho :)
dribnairb Mar 13, 2006, 01:11 PM Thanks for the praise guys - but as you quite rightly pointed out, any of you could have overrun me at any time. My 'strategy' changed completely after that first war and I had to sit and hope nobody would realise what I was doing until it was too late.
Fortunately for me, by the time people did realise what was going on, the game had got to the point where winning wasn't quite as important as just finishing the game!
I'm not quite sure why that happens, but it always seems to happen near the end of Civ games (not just Civ4). The first part is always far more interesting than the endgame.
buldozer Mar 17, 2006, 12:02 PM Sorry guys , had a report to do (if you know what a wavelet is you can feel my pain)
So i am thinking of setting the 2nd european PB know.
This time with with some what different settings.
Stemil you should tell me if can play so i can include you .
Wainio Mar 17, 2006, 01:47 PM are you looking for more players?? :D
buldozer Mar 17, 2006, 01:53 PM are you looking for more players?? :D
I thought you were setting your own PB ? What happened ?
Usually I prefer max of 4 people , beacause of drop-outs and other things, but if there is a place i will let you know !
Stemil Mar 18, 2006, 02:34 AM As I already told buldo in the mail I sent him, my next week will be pretty busy. Two big chemistry tests :( But if everybody is ok with not playing tooo much this weekend and the beginning of next week, I'd love to play. Of course I understand if that's too much to ask.. Wainio will probably more than happy to fill my seat :)
Wainio Mar 18, 2006, 03:54 AM I don't want to step to anyone's toes... I could join if there is a seat open, just let me know.
buldozer Mar 18, 2006, 06:20 AM I don't want to step to anyone's toes... I could join if there is a seat open, just let me know.
Ok no problem .
i will give stemil a chance.
buldozer Mar 18, 2006, 06:23 AM I will now set up the 2nd game . i assume Dan will play this one.
i will start another thread to avoid confusion.
