I don't have a ship worthy enough to be posted (yet), but check out "Jeff Russell's STARSHIP DIMENISIONS". It can be found here: http://www.merzo.net/
The website let's you compare starships from various SFtype (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc) and is a fantastic reference (IMHO).

You might find some inspiration. :-)

The game engine is designed specifically for that. The parts and hull components for several major sci fi universes are mixed into the game's library.

I began designing ships with no weapons, engines etc to replace each of the game's basic ships (colony ships, constructors etc). I plan to use those as platforms so that i can equip them accordingly with engines and modules that meet my needs in a particular game.

Ya know, it would be nice is if the ship design area was a lot larger than a dinky corner in the upper right-hand side. I spend more time putzing with ship design than playing the game (LOL). Heck, a full-screen design area would be super. Maybe Stardock can address this in a future patch.

Atlantean
Mar 08, 2006, 12:52 PM
I'd love to give the file up Cleric...but there are two problems.

1) Not sure if we're able to share ship designs yet, I've been inquiring at the official forums about how to do this...no one seems to have an answer yet.

2) I'm not sure the file for the "star destroyer" still exists. In the latest update notes it said that previous ship designs would be lost after installing the patch (I made that design the 2nd or 3rd day I was playing). Post-patch ships will be saved from now on. However if/when we can share designs you can be assured I'll try to get that one out.

Until then I can tell you that the base was a huge Terran hull (the diamond shaped one), primary color was silver/grey, trim color was black. Some of the major pieces like the shield generators (grid-like spheres on the bridge) were from the collector's edition parts. There are more images of it on the official GCII forums, including one on the main page in the latest "News" update!

Here's my pride and joy (Terran civ, Terran hull design). I call it the Talon Cruiser, cuz all those spire-thingies kinda look almost claw- or talon- ish.
http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/6431/taloncruiser5nu.png
It's not perfect in terms of looks - I couldn't get the symmetry right in some places but it's the best-looking I've been able to produce after a few days of playing and tinkering w/ the ship designer. It's by far the strongest ship, though I didn't have room after adding all those Beam weapons to add a Point-Defense device, which I probably shoulda done. Unfortunately, during my second war w/ the Altarian Republic, I tested the first Talon Cruiser to go up against an Altarian fleet of two Frigates and it didn't go so well - it was overwhelmed, though it did manage to destroy one of the Frigates before it, too exploded. So now I'm back in the 100s in terms of money because i rush-built two more Cruisers and I'm building a third one so that I can put them together into one Fleet and kick some Altarian butt!

Dang I just got the game a few days ago and started to play around with ship creator. The things you guys are just amazing, it makes me want to go play around with the ship designer more. Winter what is the piece you used on the top of your Fast Star Crusier that makes the top look curved.

W.i.n.t.e.r
Mar 30, 2006, 04:56 AM
Along the hull? That's just a simple panel structure, 3 of them around the front gives it this curved look. I used the same panels for the underbelly, just that here I mounted these on top of some semi-circular bracket structures I built from bow to stern.

The only upsetting thing with this one is that while I used the cool no-hull mod by Darth Kryo, this very mod also shrinks this larger unit on the actual game map.

The maximal frame size isn't observed in that mod and all newly made ships will (!) be maxed out at about Cargo Ship size. Shrinking those oversized ones manualy in their respective text files ain't a problem, but up-sizing the "large" and "huge" type hulls-to-be is yet impossible with this mod. All blank files are the same maximum frame size (and I have no idea where one can change that).

Since I don't seem to be able to register at galcivII's homepage (I never seem to get my activation email :() I'm hereby making a request to be forwarded to Darth Kryo to develop his excellent mod insofar as to add the max frame coordinate size cap for ingame unit display, for each particular hull size accordingly. This way, the units will automaticaly recieve the correct sizes :) I would do it myself, but it all seems like chinese backwards to me at this point :(

One question about the ships as I can see you can custom design them, but does that also mean you can custom build the weapons and Shields and thing of that nature that make a difference on combat? for example if you placed most of your guns front of your ship and left back exposed could a ship come up behind you and destroy you easily? I too, would like an answer to this question so I could find out whether or not I have to rearrange the weapons on my bigger ships.
Every single component of your ships is customizable from turn 1. Shields, Armor, Engines, weapons, sensors - everything. In fact the early turns I'll beeline an engine tech so I can make colony and constructor ships that are twice as fast as the stock models.

Customize customize customize - the stock ships suck. By the time you can build a stock ship you can design a better one yourself that costs the same or only slightly more.

W.i.n.t.e.r
Apr 05, 2006, 03:21 PM
You can place the weapons you wish, in the numbers and combinations as seen fit. Of course a weapon will take away space (which is limited on each type of hull) and you will want to add defence systems or additional engines, etc.

There are 3 basic weapon (and corresponding defensive system) categories: Missiles, Beam, and Mass drivers.

Missiles = Self explanatory
Beam = Everything from Lasers, over Plasma, Phasors, etc
Mass drivers = Basicaly what we have today- bullets

Defensive systems protect against particular weapons only: I.e. Against Mass driver weapons you will need to armor your ship, while against missiles only anti-missile chaff systems will be effective. Against beam weapons Force field Shields are the defence.

Engines= There exist a number of engines, all in the same linear branch of the tech tree. You start with bulky and slow stuff and the more you ressearch the smaller and faster they become.

Its not always useful to upgrade a ship design straight away, i.e. with every little new technology researched. Often new technology frees a few space limit points but thats merely it. The higher up the research tree you get, the greater the benefits per new technology.

Note: There exists a different tech tree branch called "miniaturization". Sticking to this one won't make your ship engines faster, weapons better or your defence more effective, but you'll may be able to fit more of a certain type of system on your ship.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way in my first game:blush: . When I finally started customizing I had all my weapons facing forward, so I just wanted to know if the direction the weapon faces makes a difference in combat.

W.i.n.t.e.r
Apr 05, 2006, 06:43 PM
Mh, interesting question- I doubt it matters where they are facing. After all each battle sequence is a matter of number crunching. In the battle view each unit will have its shot(s) until destroyed, and that happens in turns. I.e. only after all units have fired all their weapons the second turn commences.

Like W.i.n.t.e.r. said, it doesn't make any difference. The combat systems is just values against values and a tiny bit of luck.
But it doesn't hurt to show a little muscle... It can give you the edge in combat... maybe ;)

W.i.n.t.e.r, how is it you're using that Small hull as a bridge? Text editing the files, or some sort of mod? I'm kind of wanting to do something like that myself (might post up what I've been working on soon), so I'm rather curious. Thanks!
Hiya, glad you guys like them :)

I am using Kryo's System mod (http://library.galciv2.com/index.aspx?m=22). It allows one to use all sorts of ship hulls and jewelry staring from scratch. That also explains the small hull used as bridge (Lohengram's idea). The only issue with the mod this far is that the blank hull files will not depict large and huge ships according to their size on the map (for the Tarasque Class, for instance, I started of with a huge hull and virtualy built the rest of ship around and on top of it until it dissapeared within the new design- this way the ship will show up HUGE, as it should ;))

Still gotta finish and fiddle with some ships on my wishlist b4 I post them.

This time it took some time before being able to get more ships done. I got
ES IV: Oblivion last week and modding it consumed my free time over easter ;)
-------------------------------------

Several times I already mistook my constructors for freighters or troop ships- dangerous when one just clicks the units away and sends them into dangerous zones and then realizes that instead of the urgently needed invasion army the only thing that arrived at the enemy system is merely a construction hauler or colony ship :| (ok- maybe I am the only one that managed to mess up like that- LOL).

Having made a constructor out of the human cargo no.# I decided I had made enough ships using that particular hull. My first attempt) resulted in the rather plain Columbia/Goliath class (see post 60) and I may modify this ship class to become the standard fast constructor. This particular hull type will however now be reserved for freighters and troop transports.

That means that I still need to make a differently looking slow and inexpensive constructor and also a new type of basic colony ship for those nearby systems. So, back to the galactic shipyard drawing board...

On the screenshot of this one the difference between light, medium and heavy fighter is better visible than in those of the other unit (though both share the exact same elements, of course). Note: This is not a Drengin Fighter but is really based on a Terran hull, the Drangin Cockpit has been wrapped around the Terren one ;) Bless Kryo and his great mod)

Yeah it's interesting, it's amazing what kind of things you come up with at 2:00 AM. Those spikes turrets are the bend wings (Human style) that are paired up next to each other in the menu, there scaled down and are attached to their larger counterparts. I wish they would name the parts or something its hard to describe each part.

*bleh, I hate the way you quote stuff on these boards because I can't do a quote within a quote by pressing the quote button*

anyway, so I guess that explains why some of the designs, such as yours Winter, which have a hull as a bridgepiece, also there seems to be some pieces and jewlery unavailable (or unreachable) in the demo. I can't wait to get the game for my B-Day :)

also, how do I take screenshots with the demo or does the demo not have that capability? because when I press printscreen, it should save a screenshot or something but doesn't seem to have that capability.

edit: I just looked at the info for Kryos hull mod and it sounds VERY cool! :) it should allow me to be as creative as I want to be. only thing is, not sure how to make parts count as jewlery such as weapons and other stuff, but still, that should allow me to do cool stuff with it.

To capture a screen shot you first hit you're print screen button then open a program like paint and under edit select paste. I was confused about this at first also, I looked all through my GC2 files for a screen shot folder, but there is none. I wish Stardock would address this in one of their patches because a game like this is one that people will taking screen shots often!

Get yourselves a stand-alone Screenshot program that U can use in the background. This way once you are done playing you can then save all the screenies you made during your game session. I recommend Hyper-Snap (http://www.download.com/HyperSnap/3000-2192_4-10478121.html) (don't register or anything as DL should start within around 10 seconds)...

After having to look at my Avalon class (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3911825&postcount=78) for too long I realized its actualy pretty dull. So I made some esthetic enhancements which have resulted in the Asgard class; same concept: A huge hulled Freighter- perfect for trading in Pirate infested Space ;)

Also, finaly got to remake Lohengram's 2nd destroyer (with all those added details that all my designs carry)- I dubbed it the "Cerberos Class" after that cute little 3-headed Hellhound of ancient Greek mythology. It sure looks small after those other things on display- but that's just the way its meant to be, small and lean- perfect for a medium warship.

You mean this thing?? The "Rodger Young". Yes, it bares some similarities, a similar, yet les rounded front part and the bridge... well, they are "Terrans" after all ;)

Would be nice if someone went that direction with his/her shipbuilding :)

I find the terran cargo hull very practical. It just screams fast lifter, thus has come to serve as freighter, military transport and also as this heavy type of freighter. Making it more bulky this actualy appears on-map larger as my Dreadnought vessels- A pirate would think twice before attacking one of these.... I also made a revamp of it as fast constructor (the other terran cargo hull I use for the slow, more basic versions) but haven't gotten round to making screenies (after all its just another terran hull and I fear people may get bored with too much of the same).

W.i.n.t.e.r
May 04, 2006, 10:18 AM
Not so many weapons- at least not in the Merchantman variant. It has merely got one sole more advanced Nano Ripper gun up front since the trade and support modules take away quite some space on a large hull, but its quite well protected due to the defensive systems. The two engines give it a top speed of 9 parsecs/wk...

http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/1200/detail8mc.jpg

Edit: If one'd take away the cargo module and replace it with some weapons you'd get a nice Dreadnought ;)

I don't bother to arm my freighters. I did once, but it's almost pointless since they won't be running in fleets and the AI usually attacks them with fleets. It might be enough to hold off a solo raider, but the benefit of that is debatable given that the ships run solo deep in enemy turf with little hope of near-by support.

They do look flashy tho :p

Judging from the way the files work I'm pretty sure you'll be able to retain your designs for the retail version :) The screenies I made in the ship designer main window using Hypersnap (see post 95 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=4005325&postcount=95)). The only anoying thing about this is that one cannot stop the darn things from turning while on display :(:(:( But at least this way one can even picture them from angles that one'd normaly not see (like from below or from the side, etc)

smjjames
May 04, 2006, 08:19 PM
actually you can stop the rotation, in the demo anyway because there is a button for the autorotation.

what about paying for the Hypersnap? how much does it cost?

anyway, here is the prototype fighter, I wanted to put a weapon on each of those prongs making 8 weapons in total, but didn't have room so I ended up putting the weapons on the nose of the craft.

something is really buggy with the demo because its completely messing up the other fighter prototype I did on the shipbuilder. I origionally did it using the terran style hull, but here I'm using the drengin hull and believe me, this is NOT how I origionally designed it

this is what it showed when I viewed it

and this is what it did when I tried to upgrade it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/smjjames/GalCivII%20pics/reallywierd.jpg

I tried to get it again in another game, but something is REALLY buggy with the demo because the custom made ships don't appear in the shipyard when I finish the needed research, sometimes they do, but not usually.

Just a quickie preview of my newest design: The Unicorn Class, realizing the need for a large ship for plenty of sensors and range (in my latest game I was so busy colonizing faster than the opponents and fending them off during the start-up phase that I didn't manage to build scouts or anything much apart from colony ships and small planetary defence vessels). So now I need somethin of minimum Cargo Hull proportions to undertake the screening of the surrounding space: The Unicorn was born: Lean, fast, with plenty of storage and pretty to look at. More to come...

Its been a while... but now finally Ihave gotten to dismatle the ugly Ferrol (http://img436.imageshack.us/img436/7312/ferrolheavycruiser9uo.jpg) Class. I scrapped the entire front half and that left me with several possibilities for new ship types. So it was decided to maintain the basic rear build and to make several new fronts (apart from overhauling some overall proportion issues)- here is the result this far:

Couple of mine (I feel compelled to point out I did the Texas below before I found this forum. Coming here, I got a kick out of the fact that Winter and I seem to share the same aesthetic taste for overall ship shape. Winter, your stuff is clean and sharp. Very nice.):

The Texas Battleship, done a few weeks ago:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944597/Texas.JPG

I just did this one last night. Heavy cruiser escort for the Texas, but large enough to lead its own battlegroup in less intense sectors. (As you can see I prefer round bulging to convey power/armoring):
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-2/944597/NewYorkHeavyCruiser.JPG

I realize I need to spend some time working up smaller ships such as destroyers, frigates, and corvettes and quit concentrating on such massive vessels. But I tend to play with fleets of one or two giant capital ships mixed with scores of fighters, so to date I've not had the need for duty craft.

No real tricks to my designs...just a lot of trial and error, patience, tweaking, and time. The new tools (like being able to resize and adjust angles after attaching the parts) helped a LOT. I could never tell you how to remake my designs (I'd have a hard time redoing them myself), especially the more complex ones like that Enterprise and that Millennium Falcon. My methodology is to picture the ship I want (either in my head or looking at an actual picture) then play with the various hulls and parts to see how close I can come to that vision with what's available.

All my designs were made without mods, just with what came with the collector's edition.

Not looking to reproduce your work, just make stuff of similar quality :)

One last question though, how do you turn off the red dots to take screen shots or do you do it somewhere other than the creation screen?

You can toggle the hardpoints (red dots) on and off in the shipyards. It's the small button in the corner of the creation screeen with the model rotation buttons. However I don't usually take my screen shots there. The screen shots I have here were taken either on the main map or in the battle viewer.

I haven't taken the time to create the really good multi-angle pictures like Hillslam. After spending sometimes more than an hour on a design and then actually building and launching one, I'm too lazy to take the time to create the really good looking screen shots.

Have fun with it, can't wait to see what you come up with!

-Vampyr Class- Planetary Strike Fighter [Tiny]
(had this on my hard drive for some time, and finaly got five minutes to post it. I always found the basic tiny hulls to show up as too large on the map, compared to the small hull (especialy the relative cockpit size bothered me)- so I made this- looks great in formation)

Note: I don't normaly use this colour in my games; but this model and the screenshots were made while using the "Advanced Shipyard Scenario". For best results use medium and dark grey as seen below.

Praetorian Orbital Defense Station: The name says it all, this thing is supposed to defend your planets from attack. It has no engines or life support and has balanced weapons and defenses. However, due to its high cost, it will most likely be used to defend only th most important planets of your empire. I have included a size comparison wit hmy largest and smallest ships to give a perspective as to the size of this awesome battlestation.

@W.i.n.t.e.r

Glad you like the design! I have a bunch I'd like to upload to the Internet somewhere. I noticed you have a ship-pack available in the GCII Library. Could you perhaps explain to me (or point me to a FAQ or post) how you go about uploading designs to the GCII Library?

I've been digging around for directions but I haven't found any clear instructions about how to do it. I gather I have to combine and compress the ship files I want to upload...however my knowledge concerning these processes is in a nutshell "lacking". :)

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Aww, yeap- posting at GalcivII is somewhat tricky. Well, you first have to register and afterwards you need to open an additional metaverse sub-account in the metaverse section and set it to default (since you can use your metaverse account for more than one user account).

Only now is one able to post one's mods in the library section. I hope that helps a little- it sure gave me a hard time back when I was trying it. That's also the reason I use my brother's account (michimex.) over there- I was never able to register for some strange reason...

Anyone has a sufficiently megalomaniactic, mythical name to suggest for this one?

Terran Alliance News broadcast:-

People of the Terran Alliance, this has been a dark time for our people. Our attempts to defend our Altarian brothers from the Korx aggression have failed due to the Torian surprise assault. The battle between our main fleet and the Torian main fleet resulted in a costly victory for our fleet. Although the Torian battleships were destroyed by our powerful frigates, the bulk of them were lost.

However, do not despair! The navy has been rebuilding, and the newest weapon against the Xeno aggressors has arrived, the Titan class battleship. Using the latest Terran research, the Titan out performs all known xeno vessels, and the first ship has already scored 5 kills in combat in the second week of service.

Rejoice! The march on Korx and Toria begins today!

Enlist in the navy or marines today for your piece of the glory! Battle the evil xeno’s. Help liberate our Altarian brothers!

Here is my starter colony ship I made. Also, a light fighter that I am trying to lower its unlock time. I need to change my main color. :p As you can tell I like using those baubles as globe cockpits. Makes me think of Urza from Magic the gathering.

Here are a couple of other designs as well. I am missing one somehow but I may have deleted it. >< These two will end up recieving some modifications. The hornet is getting cosmetic surgery. The Angelfish need some work on her setup.

I have a few questions: If I build a colony ship with more than one colony module, does it make a diference?

And if I build a constructor with multiple construction modules?

I suppose that if I build weapons into colony or construction ships, they disapear after they are used, I mean i dont become an armed ship which is unable to colonize or build anymore?

W.i.n.t.e.r

1) You would be able to transport more colonistst on one ship
2) No difference, ship gets lost after construction
3) Yes

So a construction ship with multiple modules wouldn´t build spacestations with multiple modules.

Thanks
