View Full Version : Information Department discussion
Strider Mar 03, 2006, 02:19 PM Okay, starting this off... time to get some information from the citizens.
What do you guys want from your local information department? (other than money, tax breaks, a sex-change, oh.. and touch me in a sexual manner and you will die.)
Also, no.. I will not do your homework for you, and I can not get you a new job. Don't ask.
While I'm thinking about it, don't bother asking me what happens if your driving your car at the speed of light, and then turn the headlights on. I don't know, and I really don't care.
Returning to the basics, no.. I don't not know where your socks disappear to after you stick them in the dryer (though, I think they end up in my dryer... my socks alwasy seem to multiply).
Instead of supplying just whatever I think should be supplied, I figure I'll just ask the citizens what they want to know... and then keep that information updated. So let me make this clear... post what you want/need to see, not just anything you can think of.
Bengeance Mar 03, 2006, 03:16 PM I would like to have a list of the current office holders in a given month. That is part of the reason that I started keeping the Nomination/election tracking thread.
donsig Mar 03, 2006, 04:09 PM How about one thread that has a summary of what's going one, complete with a screenshot every now and then?
GeorgeOP Mar 03, 2006, 07:18 PM @Donsig: Do you mean like this one (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132272) or this one (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=132285) that not many DPs use for some reason?
Strider Mar 03, 2006, 08:43 PM Not alot I can do about summaries, but screenshots I can handle easily.
donsig Mar 03, 2006, 09:04 PM Thanks for the links GeorgeOP.
How about a history thread. A non-discussion thread where a new citizen could go to get an over view of what has happened in the past in our country. A few screenshots and a little storyline about how our country has developed. Maybe it gets updated once per term so it can be an on going thing. Newcomers could go to that thread to get a feel for our history then they could delve deeper into the link GeorgeOP gave above so they could learn what is currently happening.
Strider Mar 03, 2006, 09:08 PM Thanks for the links GeorgeOP.

How about this, I create (and personally update) a "registry" of discussions, polls, and government threads inside of a information department thread. Date them by year (???? BC or AD), and then they are all available for easy viewing. That way, the thread can serve to both look back into our history, and to find out what is going on.
Chillaxation Mar 03, 2006, 09:45 PM As long as we're heaping the work on someone's theoretical shoulders, we should have an at-a-glance page with a link to the last save, some screenshots, links to and summaries of active threads from all forum segments in the last given number of days, and active polls. We Demogamers interact with our game is principally in those four ways. It would make it much easier to participate if they were all in the same place.
Strider Mar 04, 2006, 08:37 AM Okay, I've got the main Information Department thread up and running here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=161764).
Continue to use this thread for suggestions and comments.
There is not much there at the moment, a list of Term 3 Officials and their HQ's (alot of our officials haven't posted a thread yet). And a recent activty section.
I'll take some screenshots and update it further after the turnchat today.
Oldbus Mar 04, 2006, 08:55 AM some info about logging into the turnchat and any options required would be helpful. Just tried it for the first time myself today.
EDIT: just seen that you've offered to do this for Noldodan! Must be a surge of interest in this topic :)

Yep, I just added it to the Democracy Game Help Guide. Take a look here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=3773288&postcount=3) and tell me if it's enough.

Looks fine, thanks.
GeorgeOP Mar 04, 2006, 10:19 AM I think the National Intelligence Agency (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=155974) should have a link in there as well. Or should we keep our foreign intelligence secret? ;)

It's added to the network ;).
Strider Mar 04, 2006, 02:31 PM The Information department has been updated with the latest info here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=161764)
Two screenshots were also added to the screenshots thread. Just click on the link above, look under the "Information Department Hub" section... and click the screenshots link. There the ones at the very bottom ;).
Other than that, I colored the sections in the main thread.
Strider Mar 06, 2006, 02:38 PM The Information department has been updated once again. Mostly updated the recent activity portion.
-----------
Also, another portion of the information department (suggested by Donsig), was to have a history of our nation.
I would like to take voulanteers to write this history. Basically, you will just be responsible for writing our civilization history up to this point, and then update it each turnchat. Your get the whole second post of the thread to do it in also! Yeah, I know... your jumping for joy.
If no one wants to do it, I'll end up just doing it myself... I guess.
Strider Mar 07, 2006, 09:25 PM Okay, Bengeance has taken on the role of Historian. Officially making him the Bureau Chief of History (per the presidents orders).
You can read the history up to this point inside of the second post of the main Information department here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=161764).
It's a good read :goodjob:
Strider Mar 09, 2006, 07:56 PM The Information Department looks kind of empty.
Come on guys! Anything else you want to see? I'm perfectly happy not having to do alot of work, but I would like the department to be more useful than this.
greekguy Mar 10, 2006, 01:05 PM i think a list of our military units and diplomatic agreements would be useful.
robboo Mar 10, 2006, 01:15 PM I can provide the list of units..
List of units, location and their current assignment
Warrior South of Berlin....exploring around Germany
Warrior inside Mongolia..heading south to explore
Warrior in BW...city garrison duty(governor's control)
Spearmen located in MG..city garrison duty(governor's control)
Warrior in Abydos..city garrison duty(governor's control)
Axman in Abydos...city garrison duty(governor's control)
Axman NW of BW...sentry duty and worker protection
Axman N of Aybdos...worker protection
Axman East of Abydos...barb potection and sentry duty
That is the extent of our military.
I will have this in my thread also. 2nd post I will maintain that post updated after our TC. I know this is nt the right place..but I trust Strider can find an more appropriate space.
greekguy Mar 10, 2006, 01:24 PM thanks robbo. :) lists like that are useful for people with CIV.
Sigma Mar 10, 2006, 01:28 PM i think a list of our military units and diplomatic agreements would be useful.
This is useful, but information like this that is specific to one office should be located in that official's thread.
robboo Mar 10, 2006, 01:38 PM it is now in my thread.
Strider Mar 10, 2006, 06:58 PM Okay, a count of military units and our current treaties have been added. I've also added a Civics and Religion section, that shows the our current civics (and possible civics) and shows all of the religions founded thus far, and their influence on us.

thanks a lot Strider! :)
Strider Mar 12, 2006, 04:57 PM Information department is fully updated again. I left last turnchats unit # up as a reference, and I plan to keep doing that. I meant to do the same with the Religion influence, but I deleted it before I realized what I was doing. So I'll save it for the next update.
I've added three new screenshots also, so enjoy!

I've also updated my sig! ;)
Chillaxation Mar 12, 2006, 05:44 PM This is looking awesome, Strider. Thanks for the hard work.
robboo Mar 14, 2006, 08:41 AM Correction requested for Info department...
We do NOT have 5 warriors. We have 4.
Warrior(4)
Ax(5)
Spear ( 1)
I think what caused you to make that error is the Russian warrior that we can see. If you went ot the militray advisor screen--my guess is all the Civs were highlighted.
Thanks. I just spend a while looking for my 5th warior and figured out the error.
Strider Mar 14, 2006, 09:29 PM Some slightly disturbing news:
Our minister of culture has yet to post a thread for the Term 3 Ministry of Culture. Ontop of that, they have yet to post any instructions this term.
Chillaxation Mar 14, 2006, 09:32 PM He's definitely around...just hasn't posted here in a while.
robboo Mar 16, 2006, 09:38 AM I am going to make my request one more time...its been 2 days.
PLEASE fix the unit numbers. We only have 4 warriors.
What is the purpose of this department if the information is not correct and up to date.

It was fixed the same day you made the post, I just didn't reply saying I fixed it. No idea why, might've been short on time.
robboo Mar 16, 2006, 10:35 AM Strider..it wasnt fixed as of my post today. I do see you have edited it at the time of your post above however.
Strider Mar 18, 2006, 09:03 AM Main thread updated, Tubby provided plenty of screenshots inside of the Turnchat Instruction thread, so I didn't take any.
Swissempire Mar 19, 2006, 11:44 AM COuld you add a little thing about citizien compliants, because i had no idea what they were, so a nice neat summary for anyone else confused would be nice
Black_Hole Mar 19, 2006, 01:25 PM edit; NVM, wrong thread
Oldbus Mar 20, 2006, 06:46 AM Could you add a note to the various bits of documentation about screenshots. I think we should ask everyone who posts screenshots to make sure they have tiles, tile yields and resources turned on when they take a screenshot. I find myself having to load the game to see these vital things and I know some people are playing the demo game without the ability to do this.
Tubby Rower Mar 20, 2006, 07:00 AM Which screenshot are you referring to? I try to have the grid and resources on all of the time when I play. tile yields are a bit messy IMO
Oldbus Mar 20, 2006, 07:13 AM Which screenshot are you referring to? I try to have the grid and resources on all of the time when I play. tile yields are a bit messy IMO
There was a couple from Chillaxation recently (discussing the proposed sites for our next city) that only had the tile grid. However, I wasn't intending to be critical of of individual's screenshots - just trying to make sure that in future we make them as useful as possible.
Of course it would help if CIV remembered these settings when you loaded a saved game. Maybe in the next patch...
Chillaxation Mar 20, 2006, 05:33 PM Oldbus -
I'll redo the screenies tonight if I can. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Vind2 Mar 20, 2006, 05:54 PM A little suggestion. Maybe a map showing the location of all our military units. And maybe updated pictures of the cities. I know most of this info is spread out all over the place, it would be good to organize it into one central place.
Strider Mar 31, 2006, 03:06 PM Information Department updated with the latest save info. I'm also looking for some Bureau chiefs, you can apply here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=165448)
Oldbus Apr 11, 2006, 03:14 PM Having just been appointed Cartographer by robboo, I've just created some maps of our potential war area. Like others above I've been thinking about the maps/screenshots that are scattered around. Do you have any objection to me posting an 'atlas' in the Information Department to bring these things together?

You even have to ask? Any and every contribution possible. After all, having just one person acting as the "news" isn't the most reliable way of doing things.
Go ahead and make it!
----------
I've also been thinking, about possibly having a newspaper of sometype that can be used to entertain and inform people. It's been done in the past, hell, I've managed one in the past.
I really don't have the time to manage it though, anyone else interested?
dutchfire Apr 13, 2006, 08:42 AM what about a list of all the positions you can apply for at the moment and what they involve, it would be good for new players like me.
Strider Apr 13, 2006, 10:20 PM what about a list of all the positions you can apply for at the moment and what they involve, it would be good for new players like me.
It's been added as best as possible.
The thread has also been updated with the latest save info.
Oldbus May 07, 2006, 03:21 PM Information Department updated with latest maps. I will get around to updating the Secretary of War thread with unit maps in the next few days.
