So, yes, I know everyone will tell me "GO READ THE INFO CENTER" or whatever, but that doesn't really help me... I'd rather hear it from real people.

So I know this is kind of a broad question, but how are Civ3 strategies different from Civ4... What kinds of methods to win/fight/negotiate will work in Civ4 that don't work in Civ3 and vice versa?

Thanks for your patience with a Civ3 veteran and Civ4 n00b...

One very, very important tip: Don't expand as fast as you did in civ3. And remember using great people.

How good are you at Civ III? If you're an advanced player, any advice I could give would be useless. Likewise, if you just play for fun and don't take on the harder levels, tips for winning at Deity level won't do you so much good. :-)

That's probably the best advice to take to heart if you're just starting out. Your Civ 3 days of Settler spamming are over, you need to build your empire slowly and steadily as you can afford it.

Wait a minute... I don't understand the combat system? Instead of attack and defense, there's only strength, unlike civ3... how does combat work?

So much ground to cover! :-D I think the best way to get up to speed would be to take the tutorial tour t'roo the tulips (erm, carried away there). It'll show you the differences and won't bore you too badly.

But quickly: the same number applies to both attack and defense, unless the unit has modifiers for specific attacks or defenses. These bonuses are inherent in certain kinds of units, and others can gain pluses through promotions.

Some units get bonuses under certain conditions. For example, Archers/Longbowmen get bonuses for city defense and being on a Hill. Spearman/Pikemen get a bonus against mounted units. Axemen get a bonus against melee units like Spearmen and Swordsman. There's also promotions you can give your units when they've gained enough experience points. These add to your base strength so different units get certain advantages in some situations. You need to use a combined arms approach in this game, not just large numbers of the same type of unit.

After trying the tutorial game, there's a "walk-through" that many players have mentioned is extra-good stuff. Haven't tried it myself and I'm not sure where to get at it, but if you're baffled by new features it's supposed to be just the thing.

Yep, I was there too  To quickly add, I know you can't play CIV4 like you played CIV3, alot of those strategies don't work. Furthermore, CIV4 is a more difficult game to master and win. At last, when you get into all of the goodies it has to offer, you will find all kinds of strategies to try.
