I've taken the first 40 turns to get the game started. The save-file will be attached as soon as the roster is full.

In the days before time a small group of beings wandered the world, hunting and foraging in order to stay alive. They had no name for themselves except for "The Chosen Ones". One day they found themselves in an area where strange things grew. Some of the women picked some berries and took them to the elders who were discussing whether or not they should give up hunting and turn to farming. When the women presented the starnge berries to the leaders they loved it so much that they decided to found their new home right where they were as there were able supply of these grapes in the region.
After deciding to settle they found that they needed a proper name for their people that they could tell others without revealing that they were really the chosen one. The leader had gotten a taste for these berries and just couldn't get enough of them. Unfortunately they also became his death as he ate some sour ones. The final word he said was "Graaach" and it was thus decided, in his honour, that they should be known as Greeks. Rising to command after the old leader was Alexanderqin the First. In tribute to their deceased leader he named the city Athens to honour him.

4000 BC: Athens is founded and there is much rejoicing in the land. Workers start building a road to the grapes so we can have a stady supply of wine.
3950-3600 BC: Nothing much happens
3550 BC: Our warrior slowly approaches a small village. It is the first signs of intelligent life we have found so far. As they enters they are greeted as emissarries of the gods and given 25 bars of gold.
3500-3250 BC: Quiet. Exploration continues.
3200 BC: Yet another village is found and yet again we're given gold in tribute.
3150-3050: We continue to explore.
3000: The most amazing thing happens. We find signs of another civilization. Are warriors are allowed to enter the city of Babylon and is given an audience with their leader, Hammurabi. These Babylonians have the ability to construct wast temples and some interesting rituals on how to deal with their dead. Our warriors are intrigued as we normally just dump our dead in the ocean. They stay and learn the Ceremonial Burial from the Babylonians. As a thank you they teach Hammurabi about letters.
2900-2850 BC: More exploration.
2800 BC: We find another cluster of houses, but this time it is just a barbarian people and not a civilization. When our warrior enters the village the natives are so impressed that some of them volunteer to join our army.
Meanwhile in the south a party of brave Greek settlers have arrived at a spot where a great river runs. They find the sight fascinating and thus decide to settle there. They are not too pleased about the decadence that is taking place in Athens though, so they name their town Sparta, hoping to pursue what they see as a "spartan" life.
2750-2670 BC: Yawn. More exploration.
2630 BC: Yet another Barbarian village is discovered. Our Warriors slowly enters it and are ambushed! Luckily they survive the attacks from the crazy barbs.
2590 BC: Ahh.... civilized life. We meet a strange people calling themselves Japanese. They are competent warriors and abide by a rigid code. We seek to learn what this Warrior Code is all about and they are only too happy to teach us. We then teach them how to make an Alphabet and they find the knowledge of letter interesting. As our warriors are about to leave they suddenly see some strange round thing. The Japanese calls it Wheels and they are happy to tell us all about it. Intoxicated with this new knowledge we agree to tell them how to bury their warriors properly. We leave Togugawa and his proud people in friendhip.
2550-2190 BC: More exploration.

Note to next. There are gems in the jungle to the southeast. South of Sparta are several good cityspots and they should probably be top priority in order to keep Japan pinned down. I don't trust Togugawa so we will have to be attentive to his military buildup. Two settlers are currently in production and the one in Athens will be complete in two turn. Athens also contain a barracks.

Thanks Sirian, but not to worry. I have plenty of patience. I normally play on Regent and am considering a step up, but for my first succession game I figured it would be a good idea to start out easy. Then the next one can on Regent level. Come on you lurkers. I know you're there :D Sign on :)

2150 BC - The new King of the Greek people, Leonidas, is proclaimed. Hailing from Sparta, he is the first high government official not born of Athens. The King orders the Greek warriors in the field to find out about the land beyond Kyoto and Babylon

2110 BC - A band of hardy settlers form in Athens and head south, while the King orders a temple to be erected to the sun god Apollo.

2030 BC - Greek warriors exploring west of Kyoto disturb some Mycanean savages, and quickly deal with them, becoming elite.

1870 BC - Thermopylae founded south of Sparta to take advantage of fertile grasslands, cattle, and game in the surrounding forests. A hoplite regiment is ordered rasied to defend the city. A road reaches the city almost immediately upon its' founding. Another group of settlers set out from Sparta, and the King orders workers rounded up to improve the kingdom.

1700 BC - Spartan workers take to the road and head north to connect Athens to more wine sources. More settlers are collected by order of the King.

1650 BC - The Temple of Apollo is completed in Athens, the call soon goes out that another regiment of hoplites is to be rasied in the city.

1625 BC - Corinth founded on the coast to take advantage of the rich gem deposits in the mountains to the west. The King orders a hoplite regiment formed, and retires to Sparta for the last years of his life.

1600 BC- A new King, the sucessful former General, Orlandu rises to lead Greece towards its Ultimate destiny.

1575- A friendly tribe residing on the outskirts of Japanese borders are greeted by our warrior. They are impressed with our mighty civilization and offer the knowledge of Pottery.

1525- Hoplite regiment trained in Athens.

1475- The great King Orlandu, grants additional money to his scholars in hopes of a faster discovery of "Writing".

1400- Writing is discovered! Orlandu has set his scholars towards the discovery of Philosophy.

1300- Barbarians treacherously attack the outside walls of our great city, Sparta, resulting in their deaths, and a promotion to "veteran" for our brave Hoplite soldiers.

1250- In an attempt to stem the Japanese Expansion into Greece's future Empire, Orlandu establishes a city, Delphi by their borders. Though the aids worry of a "cultural flip", Orlandu is confident in Greece's culture and people's loyalty.

1200- A new Greek city is founded, Pharsalos, to the Southeast of the rest of the Empire. An extra hoplite is immediately summoned from Athens to guard the new found town. Not only does the city prevent the Japanese from creeping into our Empire from the East, but horses were also discovered in the hills next to the city, a valuable resource the Trade Advisor proclaimed while Orlandu's Military Advisor nodded in agreement.

1125- A barbarian camp is attacked by our warrior and conquered the camp, razing it and plundering the loot! 25 gold is taken from the savages and returned to Athens.

1100- Orlandu spends his last moments in a bed, old and bedridden. Looking at the Empire that he helped construct---the Empire of Greece, he smiles with contentment and knows his reign will not be in vain (hey that rhymes ;) ). Talking softly to his messenger, he leaves the few notes he can remember to the future ruler(s).

- The gems are being connected to our trade network, see to it that they are completed.

- Do what you can to stem Japanese expansion to our South. The jungle north of us, which is occupied by the Babylonians are of little value to us, but do try and claim a few for resources such as rubber.

- We should avoid fighting prolonged wars in the B.C. time period, let us research "The Republic" to gain a tech lead over the other civs.

- If you have the time and workers, try and set up trade routes to Japan/Babylon. Japan has spices and trading with them could keep them happy for now.

Good luck my friends and fellow rulers. Deliver Greece to her glorious moment of victory!! :king:

Thrawn... welcome. You're our last player. You will go after Exsangu...something :p

Amazing how fast things progress after a good nights sleep. I haven't looked at the file yet, but it sounds as we're in a good position. I don't fear the Babs, but in almost every single game I've played the Japs have made a sneak attack so we'll have to be careful around them.

I agree that we should try to stay out of conflict for as long as possible and head for republic. The Babs are no threat for our hoplites yet, but the Japs will become a problem when they get their samurai, so we'll have to think ahead and keep that in mind. If possible we should also try to keep our two neighbours from getting contact with eachother leaving us as the man in the middle and the broker between them.

mmm... finished faster than i thought.

JAPAN DECLARED WAR ON US

All right, now you know. Only three things really happened during my turn:

1) Tokugawa demanded contact with the babs and i refused. he declared war. Every city should build military except Athens, who is now building the Pyramids. I whipped out everything I could on the last turn (this may be the last chance i get to to use that coveted whip). they were mostly temple, but also a couple barracks.

2) Iroquois built the worthless oracle.

3) Knossos was founded in a nice location in the middle of the Japanese territory. Defend it with your life.

When I started, i found to my dismay that we did not have masonry! Luckily I ended that problem, now we are 1 turn from Iron Working. Alright, I'm done. Have fun!

I haven't looked at the actual game yet, I will in a few minutes, but from what it looks like, we might as well eliminate the Japanese if possible. That will serve two purposes (if not more, which I cannot forsee right now):

1. It will eliminate the threat of a southern invasion (or for now), and we can concentrate on blocking off the Babylonians.

2. Japan has some spices in its forests. Seizing those would be a worthy pursuit

If it can be done without huge risk or expense to our Empire, I say we crush the Japanese once and for all! Don't leave any of them standing :ripper: (except captured workers) :D

Oh yeah, almost forgot, remember when they attack one of our Hoplites (granted he wins---which he should), then we will enter a Golden Age. Much much sooner then I would have preferred, but it works for me. With increased production we should be able to mass-produce Swordsman and take the offensive, and if possible, secure all the Iron around us, but only hook up one to a road.

Thrawn
Feb 13, 2002, 10:18 PM
I prefer a late ga, so I'll try and keep them from attacking any hoplites. And I'll see how far I can get at wiping the japanese out! :D :die!:

Harleqin
Feb 14, 2002, 02:46 AM
I agree that a late golden age would be preferable, but we might not have much saying in that matter as we can't compromise our security. With three defence we should be able to take the fight to the Japs pretty soon. I too haven't looked at the game yet, but if they were that desperate for contact they must have their back to the ocean. This means that when and if we can eliminate them, then we will have the entire subcontinent to ourselves.

This is an interesting paralel to another game I'm playing. Had almost the same situation with the Japs causing an early war. Hordes of Horsemen saw me victoriuos there, so we might want to consider making other units than Swordsmen.

TG Cid
Feb 14, 2002, 07:35 PM
Darn Japanese....ruining our Golden Age...

Being the pacifist that I am ;) , I would have definitely preferred to wage war during the Middle Ages...if we get Knights before the Japanese get Samurai of course. I would like even more until the arrival of Cavalry, but that's wishful thinking there:rolleyes: .

About Horseman vs. Swordsman, I think either would work to a degree, but from past experiences, a combination of the 2 is best. By the way, don't attack the Japanese one or two units at a time, but instead forge an effective army first.

Here it is, good news and bad news I'm afraid. Read on to find out what that news is.

Pre-turn:Whip the archer in sparta.

650BC
-Start sparta and delphi on barracks, we need veteran troops. Corinth and pharsalos are still building archers.
-Iron Working finished, Horseback Riding started. 7 turns at a -3 deficit. Good news ,we have 2 sources of iron. One east of thermopylae, and one just outside our borders south of pharsalos. Even better news, the japanese have no iron!

630BC
-An archer attacks Knossos, our golden age begins! Bit early for my liking though. :( But at least our production goes up.
-Thermopylae begins building a barracks. The barracks in sparta is whipped.

610BC
-Sparta begins building archers.

590BC
-Whip barracks in thermopylae.

570Bc
-Thermopylae begins building archers.
-A hoplite arrives in Knossos. I didn't notice this was on goto for a couple of turns, next time a unit is on goto, could it please be mentioned? I don't mind goto, I'd just like to know.

550BC
-Bad news, Knossos is attacked, and razed! They must pay for this!
-New Knossos is founded on a hill near some fish. This brings the iron east of thermopylae into our territory. Now to connect it to the empire!
-Whip archers in sparta, thermopylae, and pharsalos in preparation for our revenge attack. :satan:

530BC
-Pharsalos begins a barracks.
-Horseback Riding discovered, Mathematics started. 10 turns at -3.
-The Babs found Akkad near the gems to the north of New Knossos.

510BC
-Sparta in unrest. I should have seen this coming, since I whipped earlier. :splat: They are given an entertainer.

490, 470, and 450BC
-Movement.

430BC
-A japanese spearman/settler pair enter our territory near pharsalos. What on earth are they doing??? Trying to settle during a war??
-An elite warrior attacks my 3 archer stack(which is on a mountain), we win.
-An archer attacks delphi, it dies.

410BC
-Delphi finishes its barracks, starts on hoplites for extra defense.

390BC
-More movement.

370BC
-We attack Satsuma, and are victorious! It is autorazed! :D We lost one regular archer, but now have 1 elite, as well as the veteran that came along.

350BC
-New Knossos begins a barracks.
-Mathematics discovered, Currency started. 14 turns at -3.
-The citizens rejoice as horses are now available empire wide! Switch production from archers to horseman.
-Diperse a barb camp up north past the babs with the isolated warrior up there.

330BC
-Kill the spearman guarding the settler, get 2 free workers.

310BC
-The babs want to swap territory maps, I agree. He is now polite, instead of cautious.

290BC
-More tedious movement. :o

270BC
-More rejoicing by the populace as iron is available across the empire! :mwaha: Lets get those japanese!!!! Start swordsman in various places.
-Upgrade a warrior to a swordsman for 40 gold.
-Whip the barracks in pharsalos.

All in all, a fairly successful turn. We now have iron, so it shouldn't be too hard to beat up those evil japanese. The next ruler has a couple of turns left of the golden age, so good luck!

Following the death of the old king Thrawn in 270 BC (who is this Christ guy anyway? And how do we know he'll be born in 270 years?) the people called out for a man to lead them in the struggle for survival against the brutal and merciless Japanese. Inspecting the stables in the southern part of the Empire the Caretaker of the Empire saw a young man who rode the beasts at reckless speed performing amazing stunts. The caretaker was so impressed that he wanted to talk to this young Greek. The youngster told the old man about the many uses these horses had, including in wartime. The two spoke for many hours and in the end it was decided that this young one showed enough intelligence to become the next leader of the Greeks. Taking the name of Alexanderqin the Second in honor of the founder of the nation he was proclaimed Supreme Warlord.

Inherited turn (270 BC): King Alexanderqin scoffs at the notion of training swordsmen when we can have regiments of proud and fast horsemen instead. All Swordsmen production was vetoed and switched to Horsemen due to their speed and retreat capabilities. Japan is an open land and I value manouverability higher.

250 BC (1): The King notes that the Japs seem to have targetted Delphi and directs available forces in that direction. He keeps two archer regiments in the south for protection though. An immense battle starts at Delphi and our Horsemen prove their value as the rout a regiment of Archers. The Japs then strike back against Delphi itself losing two Archers before killing off one of our Hoplites.

230 BC (2): Argh. Our Golden Age is at an end :( A new Hoplite is completed at Delphi and I start yet another. The wounded Jap archer retreats and I can't kill him off due to lack of offensive units.

210 BC (3): Yet another Japanese Archer dies at Delphi. The countryside is running red with the blood of dead Japs. That will learn them not to mess with the mighty Greeks. :skull:

190 BC (4): I set up a meeting with Hammurabi of the Babylonians. It has been some time since last and I wish to know what they have learned. Amazingly enough we have a big tech lead over them despite the fact that they are scientific and at peace. Not bad. I sell him knowledge of the Wheel and he is so pleased about it that they teach us Mysticism (ohhh....) and give us a copy of their World Map as well as 40 bars of gold. A good trade if I do say so myself. Unfortunately my attempt to get the stranded Warrior home leaves him annoyed. :nono: A gift of two gold doesn't help much.

170 BC (5): A Horseman is completed at Thermopylae and training of another regiment is started. Near Delphi we kill two more enemy Archers and down south we take out a regiment of Spearmen near Osaka.

150 BC (6): We construct a wonder of the World. Dwarfing Athens the mighty Pyramids now stand tall and promise prosperity in the Greek Empire. Wishing to contribute more to the wareffort the citizens of Athens start training Horsemen. Down south yet another Jap Spearman is killed. The Warlord is pleased at the rates the Japanese units are destroyed with only minimal losses of Greek lives.

130 BC (7): The War pauses a bit and the Warlord takes the opportunity to return to Athens for a bath.

110 BC (8): Hoplite built in Delphi. With the Japanese attavks stopping production is switched to Horsemen. It is time to take the fight to them. In the south our brave Archers attack a Jap Spearman escorting settlers south. He is victorious and with the destruction of their escort the Japs surrender. The surviving settlers are formed into two workgroups and sent into Greece as slave labour. :whipped:

90 BC (9): The First Athens Horse Brigade is formed and the people cheer. I notice that the city has reached it limit for growth and something needs to be done so it wont be wasted. Calls are made for volunteers to settle in the soon-to-be Greek province of Japan. Togugawa then comes requesting an audience. I grant him his request and hears him our. He wants peace. Bah! Humbug! It is only because that we have taken the offensive. I send him running back home for Japan to face total humiliation as we conquer them. :spank:

70 BC (10): Our mystics come to me showing me some round metal pieces. I wonder what good they are and they tell me that they can be exchanged for goods and are called currency. I don't see why someone should accept a small piece of metal for goods, but they tell me it will be a big hit. Whatever. I tell them to get back to work and start working our a set of laws we can use when we have to govern the Japanese. It is a good year this one. I don't understand the concept of those coins, but I do understand that we now have two more brigades of Horsemen trained. As I watch them parade through Delphi on the way to the frontline a messenger then arrives bringing good news. The town of Edo has fallen to our mighty soldiers and been razed to the ground (autoraze. Nothing I could do). Payback for Knossos. To make it even better there were no Greek units lost in the fight. A message form Hammurabi congratulates us on our victory and I'm pleased to see that he is now polite again.

50 BC (11): A quiet year. Corinth finishes Horsemen and starts work on temple in my honour.

30 BC (12): Athens have finally gathered enough volunteers to form a band of settlers. The men start out toward Delphi where they will await escort from a regiment of Hoplites. In Athens construction is started on a marketplace where the people can exchange their goods to the benefit of all.

10 BC (13): Our southern army prepares to march on Osake and starts out by slaying two enemy regiments of archers clearing the way.

10 AD (14): The Warlord considers the fact that this Christ has now been born and things are still the same. He decides that religion is useless and only good for starting weird rumours.

30 AD (15): Civil disorder in Thermopylae (Whoops). Delphi completes horsemen and starts building a Hoplite to escort the settlers. The attack on Osaka is started and one defending unit of Spearmen are killed. Meanwhile the northern amry is advancing on Kagoshima. The Warlord is expecting an easy conquest and rides out to survey the battlefield. Sadly he then dies as his horse stumbles in a hole and crushed him under it as it fell. He lived for the horses and were now killed by one. Quite appropriate.

Well, the situation is this. There are a large army in both the north and the south advancing on Kagoshima and Osaka. Both cities should soon fall and then we might consider going for Kyoto. We should win this war now and still have a very large army. It might be an idea to take out the Babs when we're done with the Japs. By the way. Before taking the last Japanese city we ought to sell the Babs communications with them and make a profit while we still can. Good luck

We will also need to decide whether or not we should patch to version 1,17f. It might not be the best choice as I've been a large army of Horsemen and losing the retreat option will weaken our campaign severely. If we are to upgrade then I'd like it to be an unanimous (I'm pretty sure I just spelled that wrong) decision.

As the war with Japan continued, the Greek people looked for a King who could crush the imprudent Japanese and bring peace and prosperity to the continent. Once again the first family of Sparta, that of Leonidas, the second Greek king, is called upon to lead Greece. The new heir, christened Leonidas II, took his throne in 50 AD.

50 AD - the King orders the road leading from Delphi to the former site of Knossos be reconnected. Two regiments of horse also were sent south to menace the lands around Kyoto, and the Northern Army attacked Kagoshima.

70 AD - a lone Japanese spearman captures one of our workers :( , the Southern Army attacks and razes Osaka, one of our horseman regiments outside Kyoto repulses an archer attack and becomes elite.

90 AD - Greek forces in the field pause to rest and receive replacements for casualties. Many Greeks have died, but many more Japanese lie dead upon the battlegrounds. Horseman regiments around Kyoto pillage the roads and mines, leaving the countryside bare. The same Japanese spearman pillages one of our roads.

110 AD - research is begun on map making by order of the King. A veteran swordsman regiment attacks the lone Japanese spearman unit in our territory from a hill and loses. Knossos refounded in its' original spot, our culture pushes the barbarous Japanese customs back.

130 AD - troop deployment throughout the continent

150 AD - more troop deployment, the last road into Kyoto cut.

170 AD - after four regiments of horse attack Kagoshima, and all 4 are repelled with heavy losses, the King suspends all recruitment of horseman regiments and commands swordsman regiments to be raised instead.

190 AD - the Babylonians establish Lagash in the southern tundra.

210 AD - yet more troop movement, one of our elite archers is massacred by a regular archer outside Kyoto.

230 AD - nothing

250 AD - the first attacks on Kyoto commence.

260 AD - troop movement, first swordman regiments taking the field.

270 AD - troop....movement..... research begun on construction. agree to trade territory maps with the Babylonians.

280 AD - Kagosima razed, 20,000 slaves taken (2 workers)

290 AD - work gangs reconnect and widen the Greek road network, a temple is begun in Knossos.

300 AD - troop deployment, Japanese make landing north of Corinth, one archer regiment.

310 AD - invading archers routed by Greek swordmen. A new horseman regiemnt becomes elite south of Kyoto. The Iroquios finished the Great Library.

320 AD - troop deployment

330 AD - A hoplite is given marching orders from Athens to Pharsalos (goto order), and finallly Kyoto falls to the might of Greek arms! We hear also that the French have completed the Great Wall.

340 AD - a trade is arranged with the Babylonians, giving them mathematics in exchange for literature. King Leonidas II visits the newly captured Japanese capitol, but is assassinated by Japanese dissidents still in the city. A nation mourns, and prepares to exact final vengeance upon the Japanese.

Comments: I've got settlers building, and one's already heading south to recolonize the former Japanese territory. The Babs are sending settlers south too, let's get to it before they do. Japan is pretty much finished...they have no offensive capability. The forces in the field now should be adequate to finish them off. Happy hunting.

Well, my turn wasn't all too exciting, just trying to expand into former Japanese land before those pesky Babs could get their galleys there. Here goes:

350 AD: The assassination of the late King Leonidas II causes panic in the streets of Athens. Luckily, Leonida's most trusted and powerful vassal, Duke Vormav, was able to take control of the Empire, avoiding Civil War. His first course of action as the new King was to develop a strict policy of keeping the Babylonians out of Greece's land. Immediately he sent a messanger to demand the Settlers leave Greece's land without befouling it. He then ordered troops to be fortified near Tokyo. Our Horseman caught a fleeing Settler attempting to escape from the doomed city, and enslaved them ;) .

370 AD: Tokyo is destroyed, but heavy casualties are suffered by the Greeks. However, King Vormav visits the troops in person, inspiring them to push forth and destroy Japan once and for all! Touched by his powerfully delivered speech, the army marched on towards, Nara, the last Japanese city. Upon returning to Athens, Vormav is greeted by a messanger who says the Germans, who are settled on a faraway land have built the magnificent structure, the Colossus, an envy of the world. Vormav scoffs and says no wonder in the world can beat the architectural skill and cultural power of Athen's Pyramids.

390 AD: Nara is surrounded and razed (by default). Only one archer is lost in the battle, and the Japanese have been wiped off the face of the planet :goodjob: !! Much rejoicing is done in Athens especially as General Kletian, King Vormav's military advisor is hailed and welcomed home. Most of the troops have been sent to Sparta in preperation for a possible offensive against the Babylonians.

400 AD: His majesty has ordered several cities to recruit adventerous people who seek another life to settle the former Japanese lands before the Babylonians do. Argos is founded by the Japanese spices and a Swordsman from the battle is used to guard it temporarily until a Hoplite regiment can be assembled.

410 AD: Aggressive by nature, Vormav "retaliated" against Babylonian expansion in the southern part of the continent by founding the city of Mycenae in the Babylonian forest.

420 AD: King Vormav, wanting to improve Greco-Babylonian relations, for the time being, establishes an embassy in Babylon.

440 AD: A messanger appears before the royal court to alert Vormav that "Construction" has been discovered. They say that with this new-found knowledge, our people can create aqueducts, mighty bridge-like structures capable of bringing in fresh water to our cities. Vormav is impressed, and gives orders to begin research in "Polytheism".

450 AD: Herakleia founded. Most of the subcontinent has been claimed by the Greeks, however, the Babylonians have settled on the outskirts...

460 AD: Although known to be a benevolent King, Vormav grows impatient with the much-needed production of a courthouse in Pharsalos and whips the population into producing it.

500 AD: Polytheism discovered at long last! Vormav gazes in amazement as the mighty Greek Civilization "advances" to the so-called "Middle Ages". Being Scientific by nature, King Vormav's Science Advisor, Radcliff, got his scholars to learn "Monotheism" soonafter. Although a new window of oppurtunity and technology is opened before him, Vormav goes back to the Ancient times to research "Monarchy", believing that it's benefits outweighed that of a Despotism. Content with his progress, the old King chooses to step down, as he has done all he had intended, and is satisfied. :)

-Connect the spices in the south to our trade network, that will make 3 luxuries :cooool: .

-Defend the southern cities, but we can probably do so lightly. One or two veteran hoplite(s) should be sufficient, as the Babylonians can only reach them by sea, which should not be too bad if we get a navy...

-If you want to, we can make a move against the Babs to our North. We have a significant number of troops stationed in Sparta, enough to claim a huge chunk of land before forcing the Babs into surrendering. I however, was a pacifist, so I didn't attack them. The option to do so remains, but in my opinion, it would be best to get Knights. I haven't checked yet, but it'd be even better if the Babs don't have Iron!!

-I am pushing for Monarchy as opposed to Republic right now because we have a very large number of troops so it may actually be very disadvantegous to switch to Republic at the moment (troop costs, war weariness if we get into a war vs. babs).

-Apparently, there are other continents out there, we should try and discover Magnetism/Navigation (after Chivalry for Knights of course ;) ) so we can find these other nations of the world.

-It's unfortunate we didn't get a Great Leader from any battles :( , I tried but alas we aren't Militaristic :sniper: . I wanted to rush build the Forbidden Palace somewhere---maybe another time. Should we the F. Palace for somewhere else or should we just use it in the South?

That's about it, so here's the game...

Excellent job on the Japanese :goodjob: Now we have the room we need before dealing with Hammurabi. It might be a good idea to learn all we can from them before going in for the kill. Have they met anyone else yet, for if they are still standed then we will recoup the money by attacking and capturing their cities. We might also consider to let them live as a vassal state, but that will depend on their size and strenght.

I'm unsure about the Forbidden Palace. If we take the entire continent, then Athens will be in a good central spot. I say we hold on to it untill we discover more nations and then build it overseas. Perhaps in the smoldering ruins of a Civilization we are yet to meet :D

got it.... im gonna take a guess that we are aiming at a military and/or domination victory. The road to Monarchy and our apparent large army can only take us there, since we have missed out on valuable growth time and priceless wonders. Shall we go for the conquest, or not?

Harleqin
Feb 16, 2002, 09:39 AM
Yeah, that early war was anything but good to us. I think we still have the option of choosing between the various endings. We have taken the first step along the road to conquest though so we might want to stay there. I still think it's a little too early to decide on how we shall win. At least until we have some more contacts.

I played only 8 turns. I signed a RoP with the Babs so I could check out their defenses - they have mostly spearmen, as usual...
I stationed troops outside the Babylonian borders so the next player can start a war if necessary. I believe it is, but the Babs are apparently about the same size as us and obviously loaded with bowmen. We have too many workers and I am not god at "peaceful" wars, as this one should be. We should work with what we have if possible, having only a couple cities making units. We can't drop back anymore than we have already. i reccomend just bringing the Babs to justice for now, maybe taking them down to a few cities, and finishing them off later. It'll give us some rest time.

Good luck to the next player - the babs won't be as easy as the Japanese.

(if we choose not to destroy the Babs, we MUST build our military with more swordsman. The Babs probably have like 30 bowmen.)

I still really think that before we make a move at the Babs we get Monarchy, followed by Feudalism, and then Chivalry. I know, I know, it seems like forever to wait. But the Knights we get can easily stomp over Babylonian borders. We have to try at all costs to keep iron out of their hands.

If we can secure the entire continent, we can develop a navy and worry much less about ground defense for our cities. Perhaps then we can actually switch to Republic/Democracy.

As far as Victory style, I think Conquest is a good option. Diplomatic is "possible" but it is very annoying to achieve with the stubborn AI  . Spaceship is also open, but to achieve the technology in time, we are pretty much forced to switch to Republic or Democracy. Remember, we are Scientific so Libraries/Unis are easier to build. We will see big benefits from those when we become a Republic, so we may still harvest a tech lead here ;) .

By the way, I am currently vacationing with my family in San Francisco right now, and I won't be back until Thursday night (EST). Whether that affects my turn to play or not, I'd like everyone to be aware for now. I don't think it will, but let's see :) .

I didn't read this before I started playing, so I didn't upgrade our hoplites. Oh well. Looks like thats up to the next player now. Nothing major happened during my turn, I spent it building more infrastructure.

Pre-turn:
I note there is 12 turns left on our RoP with the babs.

590AD
-The palace gets another level!
-Up science to 70%, Monarchy due in 3 turns at -3gpt.

600AD
-Kyoto and Argos build hoplites, start on temples.

610AD
-It would appear as if the babs are using a galley to shift settler/mil unit pairs. There is a galley sailing around.
-Movement.

620AD
-Monarchy is discovered! The people are revolting! :p Athens and New Knossos are given entertainers.
-Feudalism is begun.

630AD
-More movement.

640AD
-Hammurabi wants our World Map and Construction for his World Map. I decline, and sell him our World Map for 5g and his Territory map. Feeling generous, I then sell him Polytheism for his World Map and 70g. He's only got 8g left now.
-A new king by the name of King Thrawn rises to power! :king: Feudalism is due in 11 turns at +3gpt.
-Entertainers in Athens, Pharsalos, and New Knossos are fired.
-While checking up on cities, I find out that Delphi, Mycanae, and Ephesus are on the city governor! Who did that? Useless entertainers in those cities are sent to labour in the fields.
-A warrior is upgraded to a swordsman for 40g.

650AD
-Nothing happened here.

660AD
-New Knossos finishes its temple, begins a courthouse.

670AD
-Thermopylae builds courthouse, begins cathedral. Mycenae builds temple, begins courthouse.
-The people rejoice as spices become available throughout the empire! [party]

680AD
-See 650AD.

690AD
-Sparta builds colosseum, starts on market. Delphis finishes courthouse, begins cathedral. Herakleia completes hoplite, starts another.

700AD
-Athens builds cathedral, starts on colosseum.
-The northern border with the babs is now blocked. Their units can know no longer move freely between territories.

710AD
-I suddenly realise we are losing 2gpt. Science dropped to 60%, Feudalism is now due in 4 turns, at +8gpt.

720AD
-Same as 680 and 650. The greek people do not like boring years.

730AD
-Corinth builds temple, begins harbor.(80 turns!, but its not growing, needs more food) Ehpesus finishes hoplite, starts temple. Need some culture there, otherwise it may flip.

740AD
-Feudalism discovered, begin Chivalry, due in 12 turns at +6gpt. Here come the knights, here come the knights. :D :satan:
-Mycanae starts rioting, given an entertainer.

750AD
-Note our gpt has gone up to 10.

760AD
-Knossos builds an aqueduct, begins a courthouse

770AD
-Kyoto finishes its temple, also starts a courthouse.

780AD
-Athens finishes a colosseum, starts Sun Tzus Art of War. Due in 40 turns.

Save coming.

Heres the save. The babs have 1 source of iron in their territory. Its to the south, but it isn't connected, and won't be for some time I should think. It should come into ours once the the borders of pharsalos(I think its pharsalos) expands. Be prepared for hammurabi to declare war once this happens, its their only source of iron. By the time it is connected, we should have knights. It may even never get connected, which is good news for us. :D

They have also been shifting a lot of troops south. Along with a few settlers. Once we go to war, we'll be surrounded, and will need to deal with it fairly quickly.

Good luck to whoevers next! I think its harleqin.

As we have realized by now, the Babs are like an expanding weed, peeking into every crack of our Empire with a city of their own. Thus, if we fight a war, we will fight on many, many fronts, East, West, South, North.

My suggestion to avoid this is to concentrate our offensive forces (KNIGHTS) :D on the Bab's northern borders. We quickly take the offensive and march towards their capital and major cities to the North. If we can take Babylon itself, it will have them crying  for Peace :goodjob: . Then we take as many cities as they'll offer (preferably the rest of the Northern cities so we can move our Knights down South) in exchange for peace. They'll then be so weak that we can backstab them at will when our Knights reach wherever their cities are still located :D.

Ahhh...how I love the fine art of backstabbing...

Hey guys, only played 10 turns, nice peaceful reign.

After the untimely death of King Thrawn, the Greek nobles met in Delphi to nominate one among them to ascend the throne. The deliberations were long and testy, but after three days King Leonidas III of Sparta is proclaimed, and he commences an Imperial Tour to every city in his kingdom.

790 AD - Herakleia begins an aqueduct to bring fresh water, and hopefully more Greeks, into the city.

800 AD - Thermopylae finishes its' cathedral and begins mustering another hoplite regiment for defense.

810 AD - the King returns to Athens and takes up residence in the palace.

820 AD - roads are cut to the spicelands south of Argos, east from Ephesus to Kyoto, and east from Sparta to New Knossos. Delphi completes her cathedral, Sparta her marketplace. Thermopylae begins construction of the Hanging Gardens, hoping to inspire awe and beauty in the Greek people. (25 turns). The King lets the right of passage agreement with Babylon end.

830 AD - Pharsalos finishes her colosseum and begins a library to enhance scientific knowledge in that city. Mycenae finishes courthouse and begins producing wealth for the nation. We hear, sadly, that the Iroquois have finished the Hanging Gardens in Salamanca.

840 AD - The King contacts Hammurabi, and threatens war unless the Babylonian work gangs leave Greece. Hammurabi tucks his tail between his legs and retreats like the coward he is. Our alchemists and teachers finish research on chivalry, and begin looking into the mysteries of engineering. the citizens of Thermopylae, having already cleared a sizeable area of land for the Hanging Gardens, decide to construct a colosseum there instead. Argos finishes her temple and begins a courthouse to combat the rampant corruption there. The King has the governor executed, and appoints his brother to the vacant post. Nepotism! Nepotism!

850 AD - The happy Greeks spontaneously erect a west wing to the King's palace. Leonidas is quite pleased. He authorizes the creation of multiple regiments of knights, and appoints his cousin to command the newly created (but as yet empty) Armored Horse Corps. The iron deposit near Corinth is exhausted, but luckily surveyors find another one in the green hills of Delphi.

860 AD - the King takes a vacation to the east, exploring the great jungles there and hunting leopards.

870 AD - Japanese slaves begin laying road to access the iron outside Delphi.

880 AD - Leonidas III steps down from the Greek throne and retires to his ancestral home.

Well, my turn was once again nice and peaceful (surprise, surprise ;) ), just building infrastructure and a few Knights here and there. Here's a timeline, though not much happened...

880 AD: Before annoucing his official retirement from the Greek throne, King Leonidas III announced his heir, the son of a very close family friend, Lord Artemis. Only 17 years old at the time, Artemis was the youngest of all Greek rulers thusfar. A pacifist and perfectionist, Artemis set to work on improving Greece's infrastructure and military.

890-940 AD: Told you it wasn't very exciting :crazyeyes , just worker activity, some buildings constructed, etc.

950 AD: Engineering is discovered, as wished by King Leonidas. From his throne in Athens, Artemis sets his scholars on an ambitious quest to discover "Invention". Elsewhere, in Delphi, General Balk, King Artemis' Military Advisor rejoices as the trade routes to the Iron deposits have been established; allowing Balk to oversee the training of Knights, powerful warriors who rode on horseback.

980 AD: King Artemis, seeing a -3 gold/turn deficit is quite disturbed at the sight. Reluctant to lower Science funding, he scours the Empire in search of a new source of gold. Suddenly his
Foreign advisor approaches him with a cunning proposal. Before long, Artemis rode, by horseback, towards the Babylonian capital of Babylon, where the two leaders met. King Artemis demands to renegotiate the current Peace treaty, and proposes that Babylon pay 20 gold to Greece, in exchange for a continued Peace. Seeing Artemis' soberness and determination, Hamburrabi quickly, and wisely, gives in to the demand.

1020 AD: After the death of his only son (skipped some years here, didn't we ;) ?), Artemis was plunged into deep madness and depression. The once wise leader of Greece clenched the lands with an iron fist that let nothing out of its grasp. Luckily, the nobles organized a secretive meeting in Sparta and forced the crazy :crazyeyes Artemis into exile. Soonafter they announced a new ruler. His name is.....(for the next player to decide :) )

- I'm researching Invention to get Leonardo's Workshop, we have many many horseman and Hoplites who will need upgrading, so make sure to get this wonder before anyone else does!!

- After Invention, there are basically two roads that I would suggest taking. Either develop gunpowder (thus getting Musketmen) or push for getting Navigation. The sooner we can get ships (that are immune to sinking in the ocean), the sooner we can discover other continents, civilizations, etc.

- By pressing F9 (I think), I brought up the Top 5 cities. The Iroquois have 3 wonders in one of their cities---Oracle, Hanging Gardens, and something else...I think. It looks like they are quite powerful and will be a close rival  .

- This has absolutely nothing to do with strategy, but who else thinks that the continent which we share with the Babs looks extremely similar to England (look at the Minimap, it seriously does to me!) ;) .

This was some very uneventful turns. I do not like the fact that we appear to be lagging behind.
I concentrated on building knights for the coming war and placed them in border towns. We need to build up 20-25 knights and then start by taking out the Babylonian pockets before pushing up into their homelands. This way we can avoid a four-front war.
We have also completed Sun Tzus Academy meaning all new units will now be veteran. Theology has just been researced meaning no beakers have been spent on new sciences.
I recommend we continue to build our forces as we are weak compared to the Babylonians. Most of their forces are Bowmen though, meaning we have quality instead of quantity.

And the save:

TG Cid
Mar 05, 2002, 02:19 PM
Yeah, our Knights can probably rip through their Bowmen defenses without many casualties, it's Pikeman that I'm worried about however. We might want to pillage their iron soon after going to war. ;)

Only other problem is attacking their bowmen will give em a Golden Age of their own, meaning they can mass-produce them, unlike us (damn those Japanese  !!)

Anyways, should we be sucessful in eradicating the Babs (or weaken them so much they prove no threat whatsoever to us), we can probably disband some of our more outdated units and switch from Monarchy :king: to Republic! :goodjob:

EmprorCoopinius
Mar 05, 2002, 02:38 PM
Sounds good. It's my experience that the Babs build bowmen like it's going out of style, so I expect we'll get to see about 40 of the annoying things.

Thrawn
Mar 05, 2002, 10:55 PM
I say we strike their most productive areas first. Have some units near the other cities, to strike any units who happen to wander by ;), and take out their ability to mass produce bowmen.

btw, they will only get a golden age if their bowmen actually win a battle. Which I hope they won't. :D

TG Cid
Mar 07, 2002, 02:09 PM

King Leonidas, the fourth of his line acedes to the demand of the nobles and takes the Greek throne in 1160 AD.

1160 - work gangs begin roads to connect spices south of Argos to the Kingdom.

1170 - more internal improvements as road building and irrigation projects are undertaken. Knights reinforce the north and southeastern borders with the Babylonians. The Northern Line is repositioned to take Greek units out of the disease filled jungles. The new line is anchored by Mycenae on its' eastern end. The citizens of Kyoto revolt and an entertainer is hired.

1180 - Northern Line solidified, workers redirected to clear jungle areound Mycenae. The Babylonians demand currency from our scientists, but Leonidas IV refuses to hear of it. Hammurabi is reportedly annoyed with us now. War looks imminent for six months, but tensions cool in 1181.

1190 - more worker movement, Knossos demands an entertainer.

1200 - worker movement, Knights raised in Sparta and Thermopylae, more regiments ordered recruited.

1210 - Knight regiments fortify west of Akkad, more worker movement, Kyoto finishes its' cathedral and begins recruiting knights. Argos finishes a catapult and begins the Great Lighthouse (43 turns). Mycenae finishes its' cathedral and begins an aqueduct. Herakleia finishes its' library and begins a temple.

1220 - the catapult unit is moved to Herakleia, more internal improvements are ordered.

1230 - worker movement, The King takes a hunting trip south of his home city of Sparta. New Knossos finishes its' Knights and begins building a galley.

1240 - Knights take positions on hills south of Akkad, workers go to work clearing jungle north of New Knossos. Pharsalos raises a knight regiment and begins a new cathedral for public worship. The happy Greek people expand the King's palace.

1250 - knights take positions in the hills directly north of the Babylonian iron source, more roads and irrigation.

1255 - worker movement. Greek scientists discover the secrets of gunpowder and begin looking into representative government for the nation. Thermopylae raises a new knight regiment and begins a catapult. New Knossos finishes a galley and begins a marketplace for public trade.

1260 - 2 sources of saltpeter are discovered within Greek borders - one directly west of New Knossos and one south southeast of Athens. The King reviews the royal budget and adjusts the spending rates, 40% to science - Republic in 8 turns, and a profit of +22 gold a turn. Pharsalos finishes a catapult and begins a knight unit, Knossos finishes a regiment of knights and begins a marketplace.

1265 - a catapult is moved to the hills south of the Babylonian iron source. more worker movement. The King dies in Athens in the Royal Palace.

Notes: Sorry for the delay guys, my bad. Everything's lokoing good for killing the Babylonians real soon. They don't have Currency or Monarchy.

I'm going to d/l it in a minute, and I'll probably have the summary posted sometime this evening (EST).

No problem about the delay Coopinius, I finished a research paper for my Science Teacher yesterday, that was due today, so I wouldn't have been able to play it anyways ;) . And now with Gunpowder we can safely defend our borders (theoretically) from Babylonian aggression....well for the most part anyways :) .

Err, sorry guys, didn't get to play much until now. But I had a pretty good turn to make up for it :D . Here's my summary:

1265 AD: Another dynasty of rulers emerges from Greece, a popular noble from Athens bearing the name Leonardo IV. Not long being crowned King of Greece, King Leo meets with an emissary dispatched by the annoyed Hammburabi, demanding the removal of the Greek galley trespassing in his lands. King Leo agrees, he doesn't want the Babylonians to be aware of his treacherous plans he has in store for them :mwaha: ...

1270 AD: The troops guarding the northern border with Babylon are moved up by orders of the King. A catapult is constructed and sent to Mycenae, any Babylonian who attacks this city will be welcomed first by a barrage of stones!

1275 AD: King Leonardo's cartographers discover something HUGE  . To the west of the city of Babylon, we see a blue cultural border! It is definitely Germany, the ones who had constructed the Colossus! King Leo would love to contact them, but decides not to risk his precious resources until his ships are improved.

1280 AD: Everybody celebrate! [party] [dance] , the former Babylonian city of Kish has overthrown their rulers and pledged absolute alligeance to our wonderful Greek Civilization! With Kish now in our control, the troops formerly intended to take it, move South and fortify near the border of Nippur.

1285 AD: Nothing large enough for King Lenardo to have his scribes record...maybe a regiment of Knights were trained...

1290 AD: Slaves are brought to begin connecting Saltpeter to the Empire.

1295 AD: Nothing

1300 AD: Republic discovered! Education started at a 50% Science devotion rate. Education is estimated to be researched in 50 years (10 turns) at 6 gpt.

1305-1310 AD: Nothing

1315 AD: Saltpeter made fully available throughout most of the Empire! Upon hearing of this King Leonardo IV orders a new weapon, the "musket" to be created and presented before him at once. Insistent upon using it, he does so before fully instructed. Due to his inexperience, he ends up shooting himself in the chest by accident, and collapses on the ground, with his last words being: "Good job on...th...the wea.....ponnn..." The nation mourns the death of King Leo  , but realize they must go on. Gathering the nobles once more in the palace of Athens, another election is held, a new King is crowned....

Here's the game and a few other things...

I was thinking of waiting for Astronomy before trying to reach the Germans, who knows, they might reach us before then anyways :).

Also, should we wait for Leo's Workshop before commencing with war? We have a lot of Horsemen that could use the cheap (well not really---but 40 gold sure beats 80) upgrade to Knights.

Lastly, if we DO go to war with the Babs, and SOMEHOW manage not to win it, we can try and make peace and resume war when we get our hands on Military Tradition (can anyone say....CAVALRY? ).

alright, here we go:

My turns basically focused on keeping our infrastructure in good shape and maintaining balance.

1615 - Rename Kish to "Greekish" in hopes of promoting Greek values to the pesky Babs.

1630 - The Russians build the Sistene Chapel. Leo's moved to Athens, chopping off 3 turns (9 left) and Delphi switched to palace as a placeholder for Copernicus.

1635 - Knossos begins Great Lighthouse. Noticed a miner in Corinth... WHY? Corinth will never grow until it finishes its harbor. That was a waste. Whie on the topic, why were so many workers irrigating size 11/12 cities? MINE, baby, MINE!!!

1645 - Education is discovered!!!! The Greeks empire rejoices at the invaluable discovery! Scientists now focus on the completion of Astronomy (11 turns)

1665 - Germans finish the Great Lighthouse.... buggers.

1670 - WE COMPLETE LEONARDO'S WORKSHOP!!!! Bad news. 960 gold needed to upgrade all hoplites.

Summary:

-6 turns to Astronomy - 8 to the palace in Delphi. Switch Delphi to Copernicus's when we discover Astronomy.
-that 960 gold will take a while. I think we should just go to war. the Babs have got nothing on us.
-I've got a galley going to the German border. Chances are we won't lose it, but if we do, who cares? Communications galore!!!

And there ye go.

TG Cid
Mar 17, 2002, 10:43 AM
Yay, good job with Leo's :goodjob: . I don't think its the Hoplites that need upgrading (3 defense vs. 4 defense from Musketmen is not that significant, especially if we take the offensive). I want to try to upgrade all those horsemen into Knights, 4/3 is FAR better then 2/1, more then double. It'll probably cost upward of 200 gold even with Leo's, but it's better in my opinion then just sending the Horsemen to the slaughter house.

Not much happened during my turn. The egyptian town of El-Amarna built Copernicus Observatory in 1380. I shuffled things around a bit, ended up with the palace in Delphi due in 8 turns, Music Theory in 7, at -11gpt. I switched to Music Theory so we didn't lose all the shields that had been saved up.

I did forget that we didn't have the great lighthouse, so accidently lost the two galleys. Ooops. :(

In 1400, Hammurabi offered contact with the germans for Monotheism and 80 gold. I changed that to 90 gold instead. Then I find out that the germans are all by themselves on an island, and very backward. Good news for us. Bad news is they are broke. Sell them our world map for theirs and 1 gold. It was the only thing they would offer.

Got JS Bachs, and begun researching Astronomy, 7 turns I think it is.

Built a settler, we should replace babylon with our own city, and build the fp their. Just an idea I had. :) Good luck to whoevers next.

In the year 1425 a new king rose to power in Greece. Deciding to make a name for himself and having his name written down and remembered for all time he decided to declare war on the Babylonians. There is only room for one people here.

1425: Prepare the invasion of Babylon. Units move in position

1430: The attack commences. Shuruppak, Nippur, Lagash, Akkad and Uruk all fall to the Greek armies. A deal is struck with Bismarck of the Germans. In return for some of our luxuries we gain a little gold, their map and contact with the Russians. He is now polite.

1435: The victorius Greeks roll on taking Ashur and Zariqum.

1445: Nineveh falls to Greek Knights.

1450: The people of Nippur rise up overthrowing the garrison. In retaliation Sippar is taken. Greeks units return toward Nippur.

1455: The capital of Babylon falls along with the towns of Izibia and Ellipi.

1460: Ur captured.

1470: The campaign draws close to a conclusion as Larsa and Eridu falls. The south is now firmly in Greek control.

1475: Greeks units gain control of the North as Samarra is taken.

1480: Greek knights finally penetrate the Babylonian defences at Nippur. Hammurabi is captured and summarily executed for daring to resist. Babylon is no more. With the finally conquest complete the king suffers a heart attack and dies. Greece mourns its dead warrior king.

We are currently researching economics as I'd like to get Smiths. It would be a good idea now to concentrate on defence, banks and a navy.

Following the Babylonian War, Greece mourns her greatest ruler while Leonidas V takes the throne. His reign is a time of peace and growth, as Greece turns inward.

1480 - troop movement, musketmen regiments ordered raised and banks begun.

1485 - troop movement, temples hurried in Babylon and Nineveh, marketplace begun in Greekish.

1490 - troop movement

1495 - more troop movement, all remaining horseman units upgraded to knights. An aqueduct is begun in Akkad.

1500 - nothing

1505 - Greek scientists master economics and begin looking into chemistry. Athens finishes a bank and begins Smith's Trading Company. Ashur builds a temple.

1510 - temple hurried in Ellipi, worket movement, harbor done in Ephesus.

1515 - Mycenae begins a bank, Herakleia finishes a marketplace.

1520 - worker movement

1525 - worker movement, Knossos finishes a cathedral and begins a caravel.

1530 - worker movement, the King trades the Greek map and 30 gold for the Russian map. King Leonidas V, "the Peaceful" dies in his sleep in Athens.

Notes: We should definitely think about conquering Germany. They're small, and their island would make a great base for operations on the new continent.

1 - Mining desert in NOT stupid. If you have a city producing 8 or more extra food and low on shields - mining desert is the correct move. With floodplains cities, this is often THE ONLY way to get more shields for the city. If I had desert being mine, it had a reason.

2 - FP due in just 12 turns? I would like to understand why you built it there. If a city can complete the FP in 12 turns, it is to close to the capital.

3 - I agree on trashing the swordsmen. Why in the world did you disband the cannons? Upgrade them to artillery.

4 - Why are you upset about Shakespeare? Unless you are going for a cultural win - this is a worthless wonder.

I have a few comments myself and more in the summary. FP in Pharsalos was a case of :smoke: Hlaf the benefit goes to arctic lands and the rest are hugging the coast. Babylon would have been a much better place. Mining desert is a good idea as they wont be able to produce any decent food until they've been RR'ed. Those cannons would have been so helpful. I invaded with lots of infantry and cavalry expecting nothing better than riflemen due to the large tech lead we had.... and discovered Infantry! I know I should have checked. My overconfidence got the best of me. Well, I've completed 12 turns.

Preturn: The line of Khaine returns to power and surveys the realm after their long absence. All appears well, but one thing bothers him. The large western continent is not ours. He embarks on a mission of shipbuilding and military buildup.

1828 (2): Why has jungle been RR'ed before cleared? I don't get it...and our northern province is severely underdeveloped.

1830 (3): MMOW

1832 (4): Combustion discovered (this late?). We start Mass Production. Invasion fleet sets sail. MMOW

1834 (5): Battlefield Medicine built. Why do we have libraries and not temples? Why are some cities still without marketplaces? MMOW

1836 (6): MMOW

1838 (7): Ivory sold to Egypt for 25/t. We invade the Iro though they have a MPP with France. We can take them!

1840 (8): War declared with Iro and France.DAMN! They have Infantry. How have we lost our techlead???

1842 (9): Superiour Iro forces hit us hard. We could be in real trouble here.

1846 (11): Things are bleak. Very bleak. Our forces are being pushed back and our cities riot. We lack the basic necessities in several provinces.

1848 (12): Flipper falls. Furious rioters overthrow the President.

This is simply too frustrating. Several artillery pieces arrive soon and tanks will be available in one turn. It is not impossible to turn around, but we're in a very messy situation. Things that should have been built ages ago are still not build and our military and economy is exceedingly weak. How we've gotten into such a mess on warlord is beyind me, especcially considering our strong position after eliminating Babylon.

I feel like going postal

1828 (2): Why has jungle been RR'ed before cleared? I don't get it...and our northern province is severely underdeveloped.

1834 (5): Battlefield Medicine built. Why do we have libraries and not temples? Why are some cities still without marketplaces? MMOW

EGADS - The fp placement was worse than I even realized

I am glad you agree on the cannons - Pure :smoke:

Railroaded Jungle? I know that wasn't during my reign. I was working on getting a thin-rail net completed. Of course, I couldn't believe that 100% of the workers weren't allready doing that.

I understand the infanstructure comment - I couldn't believe how far Greece was from factories, yet I found large cities without them.

I wasn't in the game enough to answer the weak economy / military situation. My turns we trying to get the badly needed factories and thin-net.

Yeah, I noted the railnet. Was a bit amazed to find mountains railed around sixe 2 villages...and the mountains unmined.

My turns were mainly spent on getting an army built so we can pack a punch. Things are so bad now that we're going to have to beeline directly for the techs needed for the spaceship. Domination is out as is cultural and we have no shot at diplo.

I also got the coreland infrastructure up to speed and upgraded our few galleons, but somewhere everything has gone wrong. It is still winnable and if we can get something like 40 tanks we can make a hefty dent in the other nations.

It is quite interesting though for another reason. I've progressed to Regent and am getting ready for Monarch (mentally ;) ) and I was able to spot the problems immediately. I've clearly gotten much better at the game, though I still lack a lot in the Ancient Age

Time for pure toture.

I will grab another round of the game. At this point, I agree - space race.

I really want to see a lot games in limbo finish. This is the closest one right now.

(0) 1848 AD - Cancel mining for a city that can NEVER use the hill.
GACK - I really understand the comment on a lousy fp location now that I can look at the map.

I agree - conquest won't happen, to I empty the transports sitting next to Greece back to the homeland.

(I) I watch of DDay forces get massacared. The Iroqoius lost way more then us, but...
Begin flight research.

(1) 1850 AD - We have cities with absurd amount of food. Begin the tile mining project.
We need cash, and luxuries badly.
I sell Atomic Theory for Egypt for Espionage, $207 (all cash), wm, $5/turn
We give Russia and absurd Horses, Iron, Gems for Dyes - However, we MUST stay in Democracy to win the space race easily.
(I) Eretria is captured by the Iroqoius.
Egypt allies with France against us
Really mad - We lost our source of dyes - Russia has NO harbor

(2) 1852 AD - To fix our income problems, science drops to 30%. We need to get OUT of war mode NOW!
Argos has 14!!!!! extra food - time to go mining.
(I) 40% luxuries and cities are rioting.

(3) 1854 AD - To win the space race, we MUST get peace. No luck this time.
(I) Russia / Egypt trade embargo.

(4) 1856 AD - Eretria is recovered.
To end the wars, and get the space race going.
Peace with France for Lisht.
Peace with Iroqoius for Heidleburg.
Both these were 1/1 cities on a junk island.
Question will the peace hold?

(5) 1858 AD - Luxuries drop to 10%. Science back to 60%. To infinity and beyond....
(I) We lose some wltkd, but we want to research above all.

(7) 1862 AD - Begin research on Radio.

(12) 1872 AD - Begin research on Fission - UN prebuild in begun.
I love scientific, rocketry for free [dance]
Spaceship is getting closer.
Palace expansion.

(13) 1874 AD - It starts again, France and Egypt ally versus us. My game plan - IGNORE them.
Iroqoius / Egypt trade embargo.

(14) 1876 AD - For the most part...
Poiters is taken.

(15) 1878 AD - Toulouse is taken. The island is almost Greek again.

(17) 1882 AD - France lands on our land mass - we loss 1 tank to a rifleman clearing up the French garbage.

(18) 1884 AD - More French land, and die. 1 tank went elite.

(19) 1886 AD - Start research on Space Flight. To infinty and beyond...

Summary - UN in 3 turns. Space flight being researched.

My idea with FP was to move the palace north a little later. then the home continent would be a major production base, little corruption anywhere. If both of you say that it was weed, i suppose it was weed, but it did not seem like weed when I thought about moving the palace north.

Well, don't thing about it :) Done is done and we can still win this one. Give it a shot :)

Harleqin,

Tell you what - play another 20, and I will follow you up and finish the game (hopefully). I got the game to the Modern age.

We have even artillery and tanks to stop any AI invasion.

Preturn: Things look good at home, but we're still at war. A quick call to Egypt and France and we're once again at peace.

1890-92 (1-2): Nothing much to do

1894 (3): United Nations build. We decline the offer to hold elections. Start prebuilding for Apollo.

1896-1900 (4-6): Nothing much to do

1902 (7): Space Flight learned. We start Computers. Apollo due in three. Two cities start prebuilding for space ship parts.

1904 (8): Athens start prebuilding for SETI.

1906 (9): Nothing to report.

1908 (10): Apollo built. Delphi start cockpit. Pharsalos switch to docking bay and Thermopylae start engine.

1910-12 (11-12): Nothing to report

1914 (13): Computers learnt. Athens switch to SETI. Superconductor started. We switch cities to Research Labs for an increase in tech research.

1916 (14): Tons of pollution strike.

1918 (15): Many Labs go online. Still, no reduction in researchtime.

1920 (16): Wines to Egypt for 16/t. Gems for 21/t. Spices for 21/t. We sell gems to France for 10/t. We get silks for furs, ivory and spices.

1922-24 (17-18): A few quiet turns.

1926 (19): Superconductor learnt. We start Ecology heading for synthetic fibers as the exterior casing will take some time to build. Placeholders switched to parts.

1928 (20): Fuel cells built. Manhattan set as placeholder. Palace set as placeholder at Thermopylae.

Things are looking good. Let's wrap this one up.

Yeah, some workers were automated when I got the game. I considered if I should switch it off or not. In the end I decided that since it was so late in the game I might as well leave it on. I also automated a few more so they could take care of the pollution (shift+A). I don't normally automate, but this time I didn't really care. We have a very good output in the group of cities and nothing can change that.

Harleqin
May 17, 2002, 08:35 AM
Soon. I'll be leaving for a night out with my friends soon, but I'll start up a regent game tomorrow. Don't know which civ yet, bu they'll be industrious. Perhaps Egypt or America. France is out as I've played a lot with them recently.
