When a catapult attacks a horse archer, the horse archer does not get it's +50% bonus against it (see screenshot). The bonus only applies when the horse archer does the attacking.

When you mouseover a horse archer unit on the map - it says "+50% vs. Catapult." When you mouseover the build horse archer button while in a city screen, it says something like "Attacking +50% vs. catapult."

I'm guessing this is by design that a horse archer doesn't get it's bonus while defending. This is the only unit that comes to mind where it's bonus only applies in offense (promotions aside of course).

If it is by design, I'm simply reporting that some of these tooltips needs to be updated. If it's not, and I do find it strange that this is the only unit, then it's a plain old bug.

It is correct as it is because the horse archer recieves no defensive bonuses regardless of terrain or the unit attacking it. It is usually the case with mounted units that they only get their unique bonus when attacking.

I thought the "doesn't receive defensive bonuses" of mounted units meant that the terrain bonuses available to foot units didn't apply (i.e. forests, jungles and hills).

I could see how this qualifies though. All I was saying is that the tooltips from the map screen and the build screen were different making it confusing.

If I undrerstood correctly what you mean, Ill have to say that doesnt grenadier also get bonus only when attacking rifleman.

Yes, it's gets '50% attacking vs. Riflemen'. If a Rifleman attacked the Grenadier, the Grenadier would get the terrain/fortify defensive bonus but no 50% attack bonus.

See now, this whole time I was playing and never noticed that. Are both of those tooltips correct in the city & map screen?

Not sure. I will give it a look next time I'm at such a stage in the game. I'm currently in a end-game but I still have a couple of riflemen around but I can't build them anymore. I just got what it said out of the manual regarding Riflemen and Grenadiers, it's kind of like 'rocks/scissors/paper' mentality.

You know what, thank you, I've never thought about the boni this way. Just makes you realise civ4 has gotten way more complex than any of the previus civs. Guess I've always assumed that the combat stayed as simple as It always was.
