View Full Version : My third story - An AW - Again with votes

My first story stopped because it was my first attempt and it was sucky.
Mt second story is hibernating right now, because I don't have time every day to wait 5 minutes at the end of each turn (it was on a huge map).

For those interested, here are the votes:

Here is the third one. I decided to try an AW. Please vote for what's best to try:

CIVILIZATION (Now I have Conquests):
- America (1)
- Ottomans (2)
- Maya (1)
- Portugal (3)
- Rome (2)
- China (2)
- Vikings (1)
- Inca (1)

NO MAP SIZE VOTES!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE DO NOT VOTE! I WILL NOT TRY ANYTHING LIKE HUGE OR LARGE AGAIN!

MAP TYPE :
- Archipelago (1)
- Pangaea (9)
- Continents (3)

WATER COVERAGE :
- 80% water (4)
- 60% water (3)
- 70% water (5)
- Random

CLIMATE :
- Cold (5)
- Temperate (5)
- Warm (2)
- Random (1)

HUMIDITY :
- Wet (5)
- Normal (3)
- Arid (3)
- Random

THAT THING WITH 3,4 or 5 BILLION YEARS EARTH:
- 3 billion years (4)
- 4 billion years (5)

BARBARIANS :
- Raging (8)
- No barbarians (2)
- Restless (1)
- Random (1)

DIFFICULTY LEVEL :
- Emperor (4)
- Monarch (5)
(if you choose Monarch, I might take one of the first starts I'm given, if you vote Emperor I'll roll more than one)

I might give people a second prefered choice, as I did before, because probably there are not enough people to choose from 31 civs.

Also I hereby name this kind of game (letting others vote for these options) half-anarchy game.

GAME STARTED!!! I'M PLAYING IT!!!
RESULTS: PORTUGAL, PANGAEA, 70% WATER, COLD, WET, 4 BILLION YEARS OLD EARTH, RAGING BARBARIANS, MONARCH, MAP SIZE SMALL.

How comfortable are you with Always War? I could think of a scenario that would offer a rather tough challenge, even on monarch level, but I first I want to know if you are ready to accept it.

Mirc
Mar 10, 2006, 01:45 AM
I don't know if I should try it, I tried an AW yesterday, just to see how it goes, and it was interesting but very hard.

Ansar, please vote a civ.

I don't have time right now to update the first post, I have to go to school.

Thanks for the votes everyone. Once I have time I will change the first post.

What means hilly? The 4 mill years Earth looks to have most hills, the 3 mill has mountains and the 5 has plains. So 4 mill years?

Updated.

I'd recommend:

China, Persia, or Iroquois
Continents
70% ocean
4mil age
Temperate climate
Normal humidity
Raging barbs (mainly so you get combat xp a lot faster)

Emperor difficulty :)

Ok, I will update, but I need a clear vote for civ (did you know that Iroquois got the Agricultural trait which is overpowered in C3C?).

Yes, but on Emperor it's a high chance that my units get killed.

Thanks for voting.

Ahh, I guess I should clarify then. My personal favorite civ for AW games is China, but if you think you'll have trouble in the very beginning when AI warriors and spearmen are storming into your territory, doing very little damage but pillaging the crap out of it, then go for Persia and build tons of immortals. Ultimately it's your choice.

I've never played Iroquois on C3C, so I wouldn't know how that works. Guess I'll take that out of my vote then.

machia

But certanly you don't mean to dissapoint your selected audience with a cheap victory, so I'll make my second vote Portugal. :D

Mirc
Mar 10, 2006, 10:28 AM
Ok, so I'll choose from those two you posted.

Wait a little for the second vote, maybe a miracle happened and we'll get enough votes from the beggining. Also if a civ gets much more votes than another then you don't need to bother to vote again, if it's clear it will win.

I could start the story with these votes, I already have enough votes for each option, but I just don't know what to do with a seafaring civ on a pangaea, and I'm afraid of losing.

tupaclives
Mar 15, 2006, 04:36 AM
Never be afraid of losing! If you lose big deal, try again!

I remember the first time I played a standard emperor game i lost horribly. I didn't give up I kept trying now I can beat a standard deity game with ease.

Mirc

Ok, then, you encouraged me. I'll wait one day more and start it.

Mirc
Mar 16, 2006, 11:37 AM
STORY STARTED!!!!!

I will stay a little more here on the forum than I will enter Civ and PLAY!!!

Mirc
Mar 16, 2006, 02:56 PM
Wait a minute, this is madness!!!!!!!!

I can't play this game, it's too difficult for me! Seafaring and Expansionist are exploring traits, while in an AW you shouldn't explore at all.

I will post an update to let people know what's going on, but I don't know if this has any future. If I realise I can't play it, then I will wait for 1 vote more between the civs with already 2 votes, and maybe restart. Or should I try it like this anyway ?

conquer_dude
Mar 16, 2006, 04:09 PM
Why not try it? If you have to transport troops somewhere it is easier. Expansionists are better with settling cities which produce military. :ninja: And plus, sea battles will be easier? Or will they not? Anno' but I say play it!

Mirc
Mar 16, 2006, 04:12 PM
Ok, I will try, but don't blame me if I lose! Not today (it's too late here).

conquer_dude

CHAPTER 0: AN EMBARASSING DEFEAT

The first try had awful results. Look at this (Note: I have to download something very important right now, I will post the screenie with the embarassing defeat when the dl finishes and I can re-enter civ):
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/219/zzzzzlost28iq.jpg.

I'm so sorry that I didn't save that screenshot with "You have suffered an embarassing defeat!"! I will show it ASAP though.

machia
Mar 17, 2006, 01:44 PM
Ok, nothing horrible, why not try this on Archipielago?

Mirc
Mar 17, 2006, 01:56 PM
I don't know if this will help me, I shouldn't explore at all in an AW. As soon as you meet other civs you have to declare war, so better not meet them early. What I should in fact do is change the civ, Portugal is perfect for a trade-based game, but horrible for an AW.

machia
Mar 17, 2006, 02:04 PM
Then, what should we do? Vote for a different civ?

Mirc
Mar 17, 2006, 03:20 PM

Mirc
Mar 17, 2006, 04:16 PM
Ok, I might try that!

conquer_dude
Mar 17, 2006, 09:23 PM
Alright, I see. I'm gonna go screw around with an AW Portugal monarch game see what happens...

Edit: I went to my dad's computer where he has conquests installed and I played Portugal and lost in the mideavil ages, almost to the industrial ages, but the vikings had a stack of eight units and the Americans had 12, Indians had 2 (I almost beat the Indians but the RNG sucked the blood out of my swordsmen), Iroqious had 4 units, and the Aztecs I never met. I only had two spearmen in my army, but I had twelve or so workers. :rotfl:

Mirc
Mar 18, 2006, 06:29 AM
Something I might try with Portugal is disableing "preserve random seed". So the RNG will not create me any problems because I can reload and try again.

BTW I lost in about 10 AD.

tupaclives
Mar 18, 2006, 06:46 AM
No! Absolutely do not disable Preserve random seed. If you do you will only learn bad habbits. With preserve random seed disabled you could defeat fortified mechs in metropolis' with warriors if you were patient enough. Its very nearly a 'cheat' in civ III.

Mirc
Mar 18, 2006, 06:50 AM
Yes, it is a bit exploiting, and I never tried that actually.

Takeo
Mar 18, 2006, 07:19 AM

China had 2 votes, play with them. Don't explore-the more time you have to prepare before stacks get to you the better.

Mirc
Mar 18, 2006, 08:25 AM
Yes, I know I shouldn't explore.
China is great for AW, I tried a game before (but got bored in 40 turns) and they seemed great.

conquer_dude
Mar 18, 2006, 12:41 PM
Well, then, go for China! :D

Mirc
Mar 18, 2006, 04:13 PM
I played a little of it with China, and it seems great! I have 4 cities (biggest civ except Inca, which are so huge I can't believe), I brought the Mongols down to 2 cities and I killed lots of Arabs. I'm not very behind in tech, but I have to recover a little.

I will update tomorrow.

Mirc

CHAPTER 1: THE BEGGININGS OF THE WORLD

SO! Here I am finally with an update. I had a surprise rehearsal at the Athenaeum today so I couldn't write earlier.
Here is the start. At first I thought it was not so good, but the wines made me play it a little and it seemed nice!
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/7418/000astartloc5ml.jpg

I meet first the Mongols. In fact, they meet me.
Not long after I meet the Arabs. It is very hard to keep 2 wars so early in the game. At this point I actually lost the game, but I realised I made a mistake and reloaded a save some turns before. I managed to escape without too many casualties the second time. Look how desperate the situation was (3 warriors against 2 Mongolian Archers, 1 Mongolian Warrior and 2 Arabic Warriors):
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/6449/000battacked3ha.jpg

Here is finally my second city. 2150 BC is a bit late...
The Arabs never stop attacking. They are dump. Instead of making a stack they attack with separate units.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5264/000csecondcity7ia.jpg

I manage to research Iron Working and I see that I have iron next to one of my cities. I will build a city right on it, since it's a good spot. Also you can see a Mongolian border.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4782/000dthirdsettlerandmongolia3lv.jpg

With Archers and Warriors I manage to keep Mongolian attackers out of my territory. Here is also the proof that I'm playing an AW. I love how the dyplomacy looks like in an AW.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/2523/000emorewarandawstatus6am.jpg

I'm expanding a lot. New cities and conquered cities. A small stack is killing Mongolian before they get to my territory. I observe that they rush an Archer, so they have pop 1 in that city and only 1 spearman, so I will enter and attack them soon.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/6513/000fsettlerandswordsmen5ab.jpg

I destroyed that city, since it was pop 1. I build Nanking to the east and see an Arabic city near it.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/8425/000grazeddamascusnanking1zu.jpg

A hard war is fighting between me and Mongolia. To the east, I have 1 Swordsman near Damascus and Beijing is about to build a second one. In an AW you have to attack with what you have, even if that's just 2 Swordsmen.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/1040/000hhighviewmuchwarmongolandin.jpg

2 big wars are starting this turn.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/5316/000itwobigwars8bt.jpg

Damascus is conquered. Woohoo!
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9144/000jdemascus8mc.jpg

The Mongolian capital, Karakorum, also falls under the repeated sieges of the Chinese swords!
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/6470/000kkarakorum9vl.jpg

Now the Mongols are down to 2 cities, and my units are heading to Ta-Tu. Will I conquer it? I don't know since I haven't played the game any further.
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/4673/000ltatualmostlastmongol7qm.jpg

AutomatedTeller
Mar 20, 2006, 04:47 PM
Why do you have to attack? I thought AW just meant you had to be at war, not that you had to attack with whatever you have? Or is that just the way that always war goes?
