Ive been playing galciv for some time now since the release, but i have yet to see all the minor races that several of the topics on different forums are about, snathi ect ect so far i have only seen 2 of the minor races dark yor and one other (cant remember) these 2 is everytime i play on a gigantic map ( read that the minor races amount depends on ur map size) so is it just the other major races that wipes them out so fast that i can't even see them or is it something im missing here?

I can swear i saw this very same thread in the official forums
As far as i know it's completely random. I have seen a handful of minors myself...

I usually get 1-2 per game with a medium map and 3-4 AI major civs. They don't last long in my games, but others have said that they can become major players.

I got 2 default (3 once one had been created ingame) on a medium map with all 10 civs. It seems to be just completely random.

Ive had as much as 4 or 5 minor races in my games. However, a lot of the times they get taken over in mid or late game

I got all the minor races in one game, but that was on the gigantic map.

I just had a minor pop up about mid-game last night. I let them live for one turn (travel time) before I, ahem, allowed them to become a protectorate of the Borg Collective. ;)
The nice thing is that when they appeared, they somehow converted a PQ 0 world in my backyard into a nice juicy PQ15. Thank you veddy much :D

It all depends on how many major AIs you include. I assume the game back fills in the map with minors.

My game experiences concur with that.
When I don't select the maximum number of major civs, then I always had minor civs in my game.
Note: I haven't played that much games yet, so this is a bit of a guess
