View Full Version : chopping, what is that?
bluescreen Mar 14, 2006, 11:37 PM Hey! I´m new to this game, have played civ4 24/7 for about a week now. I love it, can´t quit playing. Now I´m at noble level, and I just can´t get a good start against AI:s. Can someone introduce some kind of buildorder that generally goes like this: settler-worker-settler-warrior-settler-barracks etc.
And what does chooping means? read about it in the forums, couldnt understand it. ("Chopbuild-settlers and 2nd and 3rd worker") <-- ehh lol that doesnt say much too me.
And how many workers/city are required? And one thing more, I play with the romans. Is there anything special I should consider doing whilst playing with them?

Using a chopping strategy (see below) a normal build order for me is worker-worker-settler-warrior. I'm usually willing to send my first (and only my first) settler out unescorted. Usually the animals aren't too bad and I can get my second city founded much earlier than if I waited for escort.

There are several entire threads devoted to chopping, but the quick answer is that if you chop a forest near a city, the city gets a production bonus. In other words, the forest gets converted into production of whatever you're working on. This is called chop-rushing since you greatly reduce the amount of time necessary to complete the build (unit or building) that the city is working on.

Usually an average of one worker per city is enough. At first it doesn't seem like it because you have so many tiles you want to improve, but you'll see that the city can only use so many tiles at a time. When a city grows enough to use another tile, its worker has had time to improve a tile for it to use. Oddly enough, of all the games I've played, I have yet to play as the Romans. Hmm... gotta give them a try.
lutzj Mar 14, 2006, 11:55 PM chopping is when you chop down lots of forests for quick hammers (killing the enviroment comes back to get you without lifesaving health bonuses in late game)
bluescreen Mar 15, 2006, 12:02 AM oh what an nice answer :) explained alot.
I got so many questions that I don´t know where to start. I´ve read about that´s important to build cottages, I think they give me gold...so when first worker is built and I´ve researched pottery I start building cottages, right? How many cottages needed? And do I have the 2nd worker to build roads between all cities and a 3rd worker to chop wood and a 4th going on with all farms and mines etc.

LOL! I agree. Bluescreen, you're asking the same questions we all had when we started, but most of them have already been answered in these forums. Instead of having each person ask the same questions over and over, it would probably be best if you buckle down and do some (okay, a lot) of reading. That's what helped me the most. From the questions you're asking, it sounds like the best place for you to start is in the Articles (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=156) forum. It means a lot of reading, but a lot of learning, also. Enjoy.

Nope, he's not fooling with you. Sucession games are when that a team of players work on a game. So, one person goes for 15 turns, posts a report about his choices, posts the save, and the next person on the roster picks up where he left off and the cycle continues.
Most of the time the people keep really good records of their choices and the reasons behind them, along with discussion of strategy among the team. It 's good not only for the players, but also the readers who can pick up a few tips.
Don't worry. Everone starts out as a confused newbie, but pretty soon you'll get the hang of it and rule the world.:king:
