Marsden Mar 23, 2006, 11:43 PM This is meant to be several things, one, to show Experiment 626 what kind of player I actually am (and then see if he still wants my advice, probably not.) two, to see if I can do it, 3 and 4 to show newer players some things and maybe have some better players tell me where I went wrong.

I think I made a mistake by settling on the wine, as I lost 2 food later, but I did gain a luxury immediately, which might be more important.

After ten turns.

My scout gives me a surprise, but I lose time bringing it back to a good location. He will become New York and claim the spices. I road upto the site skip a tile for the city and road the spices, the settler autoroads the city square so worker turns are not needed where the settler will settle.

A bit of a bad deal, but I take the gold, it is a cheap tech and I'm sure if I don't give it to him someone else will.

This doesn't make me too happy.

I do the same for Ceasar as Xerxes.

A little over a thousand years and I don't even rate the history books. Will this become more interesting next time?
Notice, I'm the first to admit I'm borrowing heavily on Stocktracker's style.
I think I'll state my main goal for this game; to have at least one war in each of the four ages, plus have at least one be a world war, although this will probably be industrial or modern. Also because there are at least two major land masses, a good naval invasion/battle needs to be included. I also intend to use every unit available to me at least once, right from archers upto Aegis cruisers. Of course, I will favor the good units but I will try to keep at least one of the less useful units around to denonstrate use. For Ex. the old fighter you get from flight isn't to spiffy and you can usually get jet fighters in about one or two more advances (depending on research path), but I'll try to use both. Another example, I like to skip knights (if I'm not in trouble and desperate for troops) and go right to calvary. I usually don't use catapults, trebuchets, or cannon and go for artillery and infantry before I really get into it. I'm going to get started with an ancient force asap. Also combined arms will be employed strictly and consistently. No huge stacks of swordsmen/knights/calvary/tanks/modern armor doing it all alone. A possible exception to this would be the ancient calvary and crusaders as I am not focused on building wonders and might not bother with them. Also, I don't see any ivory in my grasp, and that is required for the Statue of Zeus.
In closing, I haven't mentioned a specific victory condition because I don't have one in mind, all are enabled. For myself, I've ruled out 20k because I'm not good enough to do that on emperor. 100k is also out, because I'm concentrating my efforts on military pursuits. Conquest is unlikely as I want to war with but not necessarily kill everyone. Domination is possible, so are Spaceship and Diplomatic. Even with all of the wars I plan to fight in Diplomatic is still possible so I might try towards that as I intend to maintain my reputation and not break deals, if possible. However, if a good opportunity presents itself I will take it. I place no special restrictions on myself other than those already listed.
AutomatedTeller Mar 25, 2006, 12:59 AM I have to say - getting a diplomatic win sounds like the most interesting, considering you will be fomenting war all game ;)
Am guessing you have already chosen a civ, but spain might be good. The conquistador is the most unique of the unique units. most of the others are just better versions of regular units - there is nothing like the conquistador. Closest are the chasqui and the keshik, but there really is no other combat ground unit that can go 6 squares!!
I hate playing against AI spain - I always mess up and leave a city unguarded....
Marsden Mar 25, 2006, 01:05 AM Hey, AT! Thanks for your interest, I've picked America, for no good reason, but I didn't post above because I thought the pics would do the talking.
Are you still working on your Quartermaster award? I predicted that you'd be the next one! :goodjob:
azzaman333 Mar 25, 2006, 02:04 AM Hey, AT! Thanks for your interest, I've picked America, for no good reason, but I didn't post above because I thought the pics would do the talking.
America hey... maybe we'll see some use for the F-15 for once.:)
Are you still working on your Quartermaster award? I predicted that you'd be the next one! :goodjob:
He's got to contend with me.:D
But chamnix is pretty close, and he's very active around here. In fact all Cham needs is a histo win and he's a quartermaster.
Dowhook Mar 25, 2006, 02:13 AM ....maybe we'll see some use for the F-15 for once.
I was just thinking the same thing. It'd be great if Firaxis had beefed it up a bit so people would use it more.
Good luck, I'll be watching this one! Looks interesting, and since you're doing it on the same level I'm trying to break into (this is Emperor, right?) maybe I can learn a thing or two.
conquer_dude Mar 25, 2006, 08:35 AM Um... Screenies coming?

Marsden Mar 28, 2006, 12:17 AM Um... Screenies coming?
Screenies Here! [party] Took some weird copying and pasting but its finally going!
maybe we'll see some use for the F-15 for once. Oh, yes we will. I envision squadrons of them. I'm hoping on emperor the AI will have bombers for my Eagles to shoot down and other fun stuff. After all, what good is a fighter if you can't kill something with it. BTW, azzaman333, I wasn't ignoring you, I'm sure you'll make the quartermasters, too.
The story continues:

Speaking of jerks that I don't like:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/firstthreat.JPG
I think this clinched who will be my first target. But more importantly I am planning at least one war in each age, my nearest neighbors are Japan and Persia. Persia has a strong ancient UU while Japan has a good midieval UU. Should I attack an empire(Persia) in it's strength while I let a closer enemy survive until it gains an advantage or kill Japan before they come into their own and then Persia after their vaunted Immortals are somewhat obselete?
This is a little better, but I've been saving my gold.

Marsden Mar 28, 2006, 12:52 AM As promised, it's WAR! Japan is the obvious choice. Also I see they don't have iron so this should be pretty one sided.

I then captured Shimonske (whatever) and Kyoto. I originally bypassed Nagoya because it was small.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/battleofnagoya.JPG
My troops waited for the last two cities culture to expand because of the "jumping palace" allowing me to keep the towns to save on settlers.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/waitingfornara.jpg
(A size one town will be autorazed unless it has expanded it's culture border)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/battleofnara.JPG
This was Japan's last city. I had Tokogawa retired to Chicago as a civil servant.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/deathofjapan.JPG
Some information the pictures don't show.
Japan lost 14 spearmen, 4 warriors, and about 10 archers(I lost count, I'm new to taking notes.) America lost 3 spearmen, 1 horseman, 4 swordsmen and 6 or seven archers. I didn't mention before the other reason I bypassed Nagoya is because my army of 4 archers 2 swords and a spearman pooped out with only the spear and one sword surviving. That's why the spearman defending Nagoya is elite. I kept all of the Japanese cities except Nara which was autorazed. I also got 4 new employees.
Also, in keeping with my combined arms doctrine, I used 2 catapults against Kyoto, Nara, and Nagoya. Only 2 because they are slow, I have more now. I used Swordsmen for the main attack, covered by at least one spearman and archer combo for defense and horsemen in the stack and flanks to draw fire and kill incoming archers. That allowed my swords to stay strong for the assaults. You need them as healthy as possible when attacking a fortified defender in a town. The archers and horsemen also helped when the last defender was an archer, also saving the swordsmen's strength for the next target.
Thus ends Japan in this world. Persia will be next. Biff says I'm average compared to the remaining 3 empires on this continent. We don't know where the others are yet. I'm thinking about asking the Romans for help against Persia to foster ill will between them and help me grab up some of their territory fast. My culture is not existant in this game so I'll probably be razing all Persian cities.
Cheers, you got screenshots at last!
Yes! Thank you, I followed your method, no offense to everyone else that helped but yours was easiest.
Next update will probably not be until the weekend, but I'll try for sooner.
AutomatedTeller Mar 28, 2006, 10:45 AM I am working on the quartermaster - I have a large demigod conquest game going as arabia - see how that goes. I figure that horsemen/ansar/cavalry is a good way to go. Will see how it goes...
I was gonna try for a diplo on sid, but got scared - I don't think I'm ready for Sid yet. I may try it on monarch - never played a monarch game - jumped from regent to emperor.
I have 20K, SS and Domination. Need conquest, Diplo, 100K (may go for a tiny map for that, to reduce the tedium) and the histo. Dunno what I'll do that on - maybe emperor, cause that may have war throughout modern times.

No, that just means you can't use "Easy Upload."
Imageshack has nothing to do with this.

Marsden Mar 29, 2006, 04:10 PM Well, my pics are back. But I'm not going to add anymore until everything is back to working order. I've been saving them to cd anyway, so it's not as if I won't post them, I will, just not until everythings working.
The thing that really upset me yesterday was it seem like only my threads' pictures were affected. Probably because I used the easy upload file method.
Twonky Mar 30, 2006, 01:03 AM ... and maybe have some better players tell me where I went wrong.
I don´t think I´m a much better player than you are, but my initial moves would have been a bit different from yours.
First of, I would indeed not have settled on the wine. Connecting it with the industrious worker takes only 2 turns after all. Working 2 irrigated wines gives 4 net food surplus instead of 3, reducing the time to grow from 7 turns to 5.
The second point I disagree with you on is the early Granary. I would have foregone that in favor of earlier settlers. Imho, Granaries are most valuable in towns with 5 food surplus. A settler factory could have been set up in the area with the cow and wheat (where Boston and Philadelphia are). I would have made that a priority.
That´s just my 2 cents, though. It looks like your game is going really well. You´re making good progress with the japanese war for sure! :goodjob:

My thoughts on what I see:
First off, I agree with everyone who said that they wouldn't have settled on the Wine.
Secondly, I definitely would have cropped the 4000 BC pic to save filesize and bandwidth.
Thirdly, I definitely would have resized all of your pics to 75% of normal. It just makes it easier for the reader to follow the thread.
Fourthly, you must be using some sort of mod in your game. I never use a mod, and my forests don't look like yours, not to mention the History of the World chick. Where did you find her?
Congrats on winning your war and destroying the Japanese, Marsden.
Good luck in your game, and I'll chime in with my 2 cents whenever I have a question or a suggestion.

Thank you for your comments, I like constructive criticism, and appreciate the tips.
Good point, I usually feel I "must" set up the settler factory so much that I always seem to be building the granary right away. Also, I worry using a different city than the capital because of lost production due to corruption. But what you said is very logical and I think I should expand my thinking to accomodate situations as this.
Also, I think settling on the wines was just lazyness, but I don't like to move the starting settler unless it absolutely necessary. And I honestly forgot right when I did it that the wine gives extra food on grassland when irrigated, it doesn't give extra food on plains when irrigated because of the despotism penalty. Ex gr=2food wine=+1 would be 3 but -1 for dpt. = 2 irr=+1 for 4 total but 3 actual. Plain=1 food +wine +1 =2 no penalty, but irr+1 then -1 for penaly still = 2.

I might resize the pictures, they are not carved in stone and am considering it. But, as anyone who stopped by at the begining saw it took me quite a few tries just to get what I had, I'm not to good at these things:blush:
I used a bunch of mods, but they are all Graphics only. They have no impact on gameplay other than I like the way they look more. There's Snoopy's graphics, which I highly recommend, and frenchman made the girl (culture advisor) you like plus the trade advisor. I am using modded roads and railroads, which even though I like them, can get very busy and I am anticipating the complaints as we speak, but as I said I like them so :undecide: :p
BTW Elvis is my Domestic advisor, Civ without Elvis is just wrong.
They are all available in the mod threads.
Now, if I can find one to change the foreign minister to Chuck Norris, I'd be in business.

I know I want an army, I'm just not sure what to put in it, swordsmen? They're all I have, but I don't want to sit on it for 30 turns waiting for MI, or even longer for knights.
Rik Meleet Mar 31, 2006, 03:36 AM My advise: Sword army as soon as possible. You'll get more leaders and more armies soon enough. It would be a waste to not use him.

I played a little more, update coming, and used the swordsmen. I've got about 15 immortals and others attacking now and that army has already killed 2 per turn when I can reach them.
carmen510 Mar 31, 2006, 04:22 PM Pwn all Persians! Just hope Immortals dont come.
conquer_dude Apr 01, 2006, 11:16 AM Very good. Can't wait for more.

Right after, Xerxes sends a counter attacking force of about 30 units.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/persiancounter.jpg
I manage to turn the target of the attack, first seems to be Las Vegas, then Denver, then back east to Dallas or Cleveland. At each turn I attack the stack head on, forcing the Immortals to defend against my swordsmen and horsemen, not what I prefer to be doing, but I am keeping them at bay.

At Oakland, my second leader appears.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/secondleader.jpg
Note: I made a mistake by not changing the walls to spearman because I decided I had too much in Oakland that I didn't want to lose but couldn't hold it. I was going to give it to the Romans. This beams my troops safely to Washington, and also might increase the Romans sense of loss by losing a city to the Persians. Also, Arabia enters the war against Rome, but not against me.
Here come the Persians

I think I made another mistake, because I used him to create the Heroic Epic.
Marsden Apr 04, 2006, 12:00 AM The birth of the American Republic! Well it stinks really, almost all of my cities revolt and I actually miss anarchy. I ask for a peace treaty to shut them up.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/peacetreaty.jpg
I plan to use these 20 turns to build up the army and research some techs. The Persians now have Pikemen which make my swordsmen less useful.
My army standing on the ruins of Ghulman. I spread out to try to keep the Persians from resettling the area I just cleared.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/afterpeace.jpg
Not the decisive victory I had hoped for, but I think I can claim victory. The next war will be coming that is assured. But I will respect the peace treaty and receive my 26 gpt. I am patient, but I also am worried. Not about the Persians but the ones on the other continent. The Koreans have built Sun Tzu's and the French built Leo's and I'm still working on Feudalism and the other three here with me don't know any other techs besides the ones I do. (except Feudalism)
Here is the powergraph.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/powergraph.jpg
Not great. I was hoping to conquer this land by the time I hit the industrial age. I still might do that, but I am worried the other continent will be so far ahead in technology that I might not be able to pull it off. Well, we'll see. I'm hoping to crush the Persians during the Knights part of the middle age, then hit the Arabs soon after with calvary. I don't know if I should avoid learning Education so that I might take the Great Library and catch up once I meet the other continent. The Romans have started it, if they finish it, I could save taking it from them until after I met everyone, possibly. But how can I meet them without Astronomy, I think I will start sending out more galleys. Another concern is the dense jungle through Persian territory. I won't be able to use my seige equipment because of them. This is going to hamper my plans.
Next time: The peace treaty will expire, how will Persian war 2 go?

My apologies for the last joke. I was rather silly, and I have it on very good authority that it almost certainly might not happen again.
AutomatedTeller Apr 04, 2006, 10:59 AM I think rushing Heroic Epic makes sense - you are gonna be having a *lot* of war and it allows you to build more units with the 300 shields or whatever it is that the epic costs.
helps with culture, too.
edit - just re-read a previous post, where you said you were gonna send out more galleys... so my last comment was answered...

I know I can never catch up culturally, but I want to at least close the gaps in my territory and reduce chances of my cities flipping away to another culture.
My attack force on the west.

I noticed the Romans had invention, so I make this trade.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/tradeformono3.jpg
This is what Abu offers.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/abuisstupid4.jpg
Checking to see what Xerxes had in techs my foreign advisor comes up with this little gem.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/foreigndope5.jpg I want to kill him but I don't know how.
Well, right on schedule the peace treaty expires.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/twentyturnsup6.jpg
Abu might be good for something after all.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/whynot7.jpg
I head for Behistom and Sidon.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/attackbegins8.jpg
This pops up now, making a future war with Rome potentially more profitable.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/greatlibrary9.jpg
Behistom falls to my attack.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofbehistun10.jpg
In the west, things don't go as planned. I see this stack and decide to cancel the assault and try to hold off the attackers with a counter stack strategy. I should have prepared better between the wars.

Next time: Can I turn the Persian advance?
Marsden Apr 07, 2006, 11:24 PM I'm not too pleased with my progress, so I ask for Roman help.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/romealliance13.jpg
Not a bad deal for chivalry, I'm sure they would have discovered is soon enough. Note: they already have gunpowder.
Despite having 2 allies, I'm still on the defensive.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/onthedefensive14.jpg
I think that the Persians are treating me as the primary opponent, or maybe they just have a vastly overwhelming force. Ulp!
Shortly after I get this message.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/stalemate.jpg
I, of course, refuse. I haven't been penetrating like I want, but I haven't lost any territory.
Finally, I'm on the move again. I broke a small force of to the east from the buildup at Behistom.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofzohak15.jpg
My knights are now making an impact. Also, now that I've changed the angle of my attack I can now push my trebuchets through the enemy jungle on their roads.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofsardis16.jpg
I don't know why this picture came out weird.
My research showed 4 turns left for gunpowder then suddenly it dropped to 1 turn. I checked and this is my contact screen. I made no trades or contacts with any units. Could this be a bug?
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/weirdencounter17.jpg
Happy to have the contacts, however they showed up, I start trading.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/carthagetrade22.jpg
Marsden Apr 07, 2006, 11:39 PM I continue my assault. I notice the southern front is moving north, the Persians folding.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofhamadan23.jpg
Well now I see what the Romans have. Looks scarey.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/romanstack24.jpg
The Arab MI softened them up for me and I took this with only 4 knights. I wanted to beat the others to it, note the Romans also coming.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofpasargadae25.jpg
Continued attacks against Persia.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/bombardment26.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofbactra27.jpg
Once again the Arabs softened them up for me. It's important to note the order everyone takes their turn. Persia goes before Arabia this game so they can't heal after the Arab attacks. Very convenient for me!
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/battleofpersepolis29.jpg
The last Persian city.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/captureofsamaria30.jpg
Finally, after centuries of warefare, I win.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/persianwarwon31.jpg
Now, I have to deal with Arabia and Rome. Can I keep up with the technologically advanced other continent? I'm about 7 or 8 techs behind.
Makonnen5 Apr 08, 2006, 07:12 AM very nice, i love all the pictures. ive been following since ive got Civ 3 Complete
carmen510 Apr 08, 2006, 12:28 PM Excellent conquests! Who you go for next?
BuckyRea Apr 10, 2006, 05:14 PM I can't follow this story anymore. Argh, these huge pics take too damn long ot load and as often as not they don't help tell the story!! And I'm working off a t4 line at work to read this. This is a well written story and looks to be an intriguing game. But unless Marsden can crop or reduce his pictures, I'm going to be too frustrated with the DL time to stay on.
conquer_dude Apr 10, 2006, 06:15 PM I see ntohing wrong with the pics. Sure, all pics take time to load.

Here is the diplomacy screen. Note that France and the Ottomans are now in the industrial age.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/10diplomacy.jpg
I am 7 out of 9 in culture, 3(about) out of 9 for army strength, 1st in land area, and around 7th in tech lead, so I'm not really dominating this one. I am eyeing the Great Library of Cumae in the Roman Empire very greedily.
More later.
Sorry about the pics Bucky. I can't believe you said this was well written.
And thanks to Makonnen5 and carmen510. I'm going to finish this to the bloody end, I'm still hoping for those waves of F-15s to give me a golden age.
conquer_dude Apr 10, 2006, 09:09 PM Wow. Lots of territories. Looks like Korea is getting crushed.
Vind2 Apr 10, 2006, 09:33 PM I can't believe that one Arabic city hasn't fliped yet !
Marsden Apr 10, 2006, 11:39 PM After a short mull, I decide to attack the Arabs. The city of Arbela has the only furs on the continent that the Romans don't control. I want them. Also, the next city south, Aden, controls the only other saltpeter on this whole continent. I search Roman lands with a clean map and see none, they must be buying it, probably from the Iroquois, who have 3 saltpeter. I intend to sell the extra to the Ottomans, as this will make them very dangerous with their Sipahi.
I ask Abu to leave and...War.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/11arabwar.jpg
I ask for Roman help mostly because I don't want them coming into the war on the other side.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/12alliance.jpg
The annoying pink splotch that Vind2 was talking about before is now gone.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/13battleofmosul.jpg
This was close to my troops.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/14battleofistakhr.jpg
My attack wore out before I took my main objective! Again I split too much of my forces.
I discovered Millitary Tradition. Now all commerce will go to entertainment and taxes.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/15upgrades.jpg
I want to make a joke about "we don't need no education" because the Great Library will yeild me nothing with it.
More cities obviously in my territory that will annoy me no longer.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/16battleofaydab.jpg
Another leader. I need more. One of my swordsmen armies got killed in Persian war 2.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/17leader.jpg
I can't compare to the Arabs in culture, so any main city will be razed.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/18destructionofaden.jpg
This isn't too much of a surprise. Only 8 remain.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/19koreadead.jpg
Finally, the main target of my conquest is obtained.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/20battleofarbela.jpg
I destroy as much as I comfortably can, the Romans are just consuming Arabia and now I regret asking for the alliance.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/21battleoffez.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/22battleofshiraz.jpg
I make a treaty with Abu. The Romans won't stop until he is gone. Actually, he played an end run on me and took Spokane, my one city on an island. You can barely see it in the picture announcing the demise of Korea. My absolute lack of a navy prevents me from retaking it, and now it is all they have left.
Marsden Apr 10, 2006, 11:58 PM I am loading up on cannons and calvary and deploying them south for the upcomming maelstrom with the Romans. This will be difficult. I really don't know if I can win this one. Biff keeps telling me we are WEAK against them, and sure enough here comes Ceasar.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/23threats.jpg
I think my course is now clear. I will be fighting the Romans. Should I declare war like a nice tyrant and attack, or ambush them by moving a stack of doom right outside the city with the Great Library.
Pros of nice war would be I keep my reputation as a polite conquerer. Cons are by the time I win, If I win, the Iroquois will be a founding member of the United Federation of Planets. I don't think my reputation is worth That much.
I complete the Academy and start building an army. Now that I have calvary, they are incredibly useful.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/25academy.jpg
Well, here it is. I realised I messed up on the shot as I should have right clicked to show the whole stack. I will probably update this soon with a new shot.

Wow, that was a lot easier than I thought. However, I don't expect any real help from the allies on the other continent.
The Carthaginians are just barely in the middle age. I am going to give them the Great Library just to see if the AI can catch up.

I captured the Great Library, now can I hold it till we read the books?
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/7greatlibrary.jpg
I also try some attacks. Unfortunately, my tunnel vision on the Great Library kept me from actually preparing any other attacks. This is the only one that succeds.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/8battleofartaxata.jpg
These are all that survive holding Cumae. But I learn 15(!) techs. I get all remaining middle ages techs except for music theory, boo hoo, and I get Medicine, Steam(!), Nationalism, Communism, and Fascism. I call for a revolution. No more Repbulic for me.

I give the city away, and my troops climb into the teleporter.

Back to Washington.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/11backhomeagain.jpg
Still the next turn after the attack I notice the Romans now have riflemen. Either they could have built them but saw no threat or they just discovered the tech and one more turn delay might have made a difference.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/12riflemen.jpg
In between turns the Ottomans sign a Mutual Protection Pact with Carthage, who then declares war on Rome, who then just walks in and takes Cumae back. D'oh!
Marsden Apr 11, 2006, 11:47 PM And the current situation. Everybody but the Zulus against Rome.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/13politicalsit.jpg
So far I have lost Salt Lake City and Tucson. SLC controlled my 2nd saltpeter, and now I have none. I'm not too upset, though because I have no defenders and now I'm going to concentrate on building riflemen with an eye toward upgrading to Infantry asap. Only 2 techs away from artillery, my favorite weapon. I just hope I can turn the tide of Roman cavalry before I loose to much. Well, at least I got rid of that weird hat.
conquer_dude Apr 13, 2006, 02:17 PM WoOt wOOt!!!!
Looking good. The world is a mess, though.
Marsden Apr 14, 2006, 12:43 AM WoOt wOOt!!!!
Looking good.
Glad you think so!
Actually, I played a few more turns today. I can't prove it but the Romans' only source of saltpeter was the Iroquois. They look like they're out of calvary and attacking with whatever crap they have(spears, pikes, legions, muskets, knights, and MI). My anarchy is over and I have a mobilized facsism, 2 techs away from infantry and artillery. They'll be sorry.
On the down side I lost Samara and to of my size one towns got razed. If I look at it this way, as if I traded Samara and 2 towns for 15 techs, the AI would never have gone for it and I was going to attack Rome anyway, I really don't think it was as bad as I first thought. The Iroquois are going to be a problem later, though. I think I will probably blasting their capital to destroy a spaceship.
conquer_dude Apr 16, 2006, 06:30 PM Well, looking forward to the update! :)
Marsden Apr 18, 2006, 11:37 PM Hey Hey! (in Krusty voice). Happy Easter, everybody.

Not long after the alliance with the Iroquois against Rome, the jerks quit on me and started trading again. I asked for and embargo. No go. Although they would agree to a new alliance, I didn't bother, I didn't want to give them any more cash. This works even better. The jerks won't even touch my army.

AutomatedTeller Apr 19, 2006, 11:06 AM woohoo!!
are you planning on a conquest win? my guess is that you should be able to get it - I assume that the Ottoman's are ahead in tech's because of their GA.

I was waiting for the Intelligence center to be built before I start my "stealing campaign" and I Really wanted the Infantry and Artillery. They are the most powerful combo (along with cavalry) in the game. My war against Rome turned from a 'holding and attrition" war to a conquest once I bought the techs.

Yeah, well don't break your arm patting yourself on the back, Axel.
Thing is, he's now listed officially as MIA.
I think I upgraded him to cavalry, would that have changed his name?
I was just renaming the units after people that posted to the thread mostly because I lack imagination. I also was trying to let the posters know I acknowlege their interest.
Just don't tell Experiment 626 what happened. I felt bad about his horseman getting killed so I renamed an infantry "Experiment 626 II". It was killed shortly thereafter. D'oh!!

I'm so :( that I could
AutomatedTeller Apr 21, 2006, 11:08 PM no, upgrading doesn't change the name. It caused a problem for me - I once named a warrior "warrior 1" - when I upgraded him to a swordsman, I sometimes couldn't remember what he was!

The situation so far. My reputation is ruined, so probably no UN victory. The Zulus are down to one city. I'm behind by about 10 techs. I'm showing average against the Iroquois and Ottomans.
Some other things have already happened since the fall of Rome. I made a major decision and took an entirely new management approach to my nation. More details to follow.

@ Makonnen5 and madviking, I got the roads and railroads from the Mods forum. I can't remember who made them, but I like them. As I posted toward the begining I thought that people would complain about them because it can make it harder to see what is on the square, but I think they look good.
@ conquer_dude, It's an arab city name, whatever.

After realizing that despite my "veteran spies" stealing is not cost effective for me. Out of 4 attempts I not only missed 2 times, both times the spy got whacked. I rather have a live spy reporting on the military screen and potential spaceship parts than a dead one telling me nothing and costing 4000 gold getting himself killed. I switched from tax to science, and made as many scientists in the corrupt sections of the empire as I could. I got refining down from 17 to 4 turns. I am going to continue to research most techs and steal occasionally.
Now, here is former Roman territory.

Here is something else to think about. The Turks have Uranium and Aluminum. How do I know, not having discovered oil myself? These pics show:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/3ottomanwonders.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/7armystrength.jpg
You need uranium for the Manhattan Project and you need Aluminum to build a MiG. Also the Turks own the UN and that would put them on the ballot along with me and Hiawatha. A three way race with only 6 civs makes for a lot of inconclusive elections, if any. No, the Spaceship will be my greatest threat. I am researching as hard as I can to get a navy and air force so I can invade the other continent and make sure no one is leaving this world alive.
Here is one more thing. I saw this Turkish worker in my area.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/2thisguy.jpg
Rubber is required for the spaceship casing, but I'm sure they have other rubber. Maybe the AI is just trying to secure other resources. One thing that is interesting is even though I know they have the resources I don't know where they are. The Turks have two small towns on my land, wouldn't it be interesting if one of their important resources are claimed by one of them?
We shall see.
Marsden Apr 28, 2006, 12:28 AM Warning! This is an attempt by Marsden at a story. Please skip if not willing to suffer.
Caesar sat upon his throne in turmoil. He knew the end of his rule was upon him, would he lose his life as well? Although the city of Rome proper had gone unattacked, all surrounding territory had been burned and no farms survived to feed the great city. Much of the populous had fled or was drafted into the army. No, it will be ending soon. The hated Americans were destroying the great republic piece by piece.
Caesar was suddenly roused from his musings by the sound of large explosions outside the palace. “This must be it,” Caesar thought “the end of all.” The remaining Roman riflemen, fortified in the city were taking a terrible pounding by American artillery several miles outside the city. Soon the Warmaster’s terrible horde would reap the survivors like a scythe and claim their final victory. Caesar swore,”I will face them, as an emperor and as a man!” Drawing his sword and rushing to the door of the throne room to face the invaders, he received a disheartening surprise upon opening the ancient wooden doors; the Americans have already taken the city! Lost in his thoughts, he delayed too long. An American infantryman (named Automated Teller) clubbed Caesar with the butt of his rifle, knocking him unconscious in one strong strike.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he sneered as Caesar collapsed.
“Wait! We have orders to capture him alive.” Said a cavalry officer. “The Warmaster has plans for him.”
“Don’t worry 626, he’s fine.”
Caesar awakes much later in different surroundings. The land is much different here, and everywhere that he looks he sees armed troops and people laboring to supply them. Huge portraits of the hated Marsden decorate many buildings and a large statue depicting him stands in the square. “This must be Washington,” said Caesar to himself, “then it is too late, and I am to die a death without honor.”
“Nonsense!” came the reply.
Startled Caesar turned and beheld the hated face of the Warmaster himself. “Why, what do you mean?”
“Well, Caesar. I have a position in mind for you in greater America,” Marsden replied. “Everyone has a place; to kill you would serve no purpose.” “You are an excellent administrator and I can use your skills.” I offer you the choice to serve me now, or have those men shoot you down like an animal.” As he said this, Marsden motioned toward the soldiers in the corners of the room.
“Very well. I will do as you command."
“Excellent!” You know Tokugawa is still around, he is in charge of the sanitation department in Chicago. And Xerxes is the deputy mayor of Hunt Valley. And here is the head of Abu. I use it as a paper weight and occasionally throw it at the cat. You see everyone has a place” Marsden breaks into laughter and Caesar sinks even lower into despair. Perhaps death would be better.

Marsden May 02, 2006, 11:37 PM Sorry I haven't updated sooner. I didn't get as much done since last time as I wanted, but I can give you a little advance on the next update: World War II.

No. I mean I could tell that the Ottomans had Aluminum and Uranium by the means I demonstrated above. If your enemy makes something that you know requires a resource, then you know they either have the resource or are trading for it, even if you can't see it yet.
Marsden May 05, 2006, 12:25 AM Time to start another world war. Actually, this seemed a lot easier than I thought, I just made to MPP (Iroquois and France) and declared war on the Ottomans and Carthage. http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/1worldwar2.jpg

After stealing AT I reseached Amphibious Warefare and Electronics and I am now a Modern Power! I am going for Rocketry to get my F-15s and maybe get my golden age! I notice the Ottomans and Iroqouis both have all of the first modern techs, and France is still industrial. Carthage just made it to industrial but doesn't have the first techs yet. I think I'll go for Ecology next then synthetics, I want the MBTs. Then probably stealth or advanced flight. I also want to get Rocket artillery, but that's a long way off.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/10iroqouisship.jpg
Well, this certainly looks bad. Can I pull this one back from the brink?
Marsden May 10, 2006, 12:13 AM I decided to make New Niagra Falls my main base for attacking the Iroquois. I am diverting all forces to there to start the assault. I picked it not only because I already own it but it is in proximity of the Iroquois 2 Aluminum. I don't know for sure what the last part is they don't have, but I think it's the stasis chamber, for which robotics, aluminum and uranium are required. I haven't seen any rocket artillery yet, I don't think they have robotics yet. I get my ships in to harbor and unload my tanks. I brought my bombers and my F-15s and try to set up a defensible perimeter by bombing or shelling all roads leading up to my base requiring the enemy units to expend movement coming to attack, forcing them to stop by the city and be shelled by my artillery and hopefully finished off by my tanks. I learn synthetics, upgrade all tanks and declare war all in one turn. Then my plan falls apart again as the French, with whom I have a MPP, also declare war and lose the city guarding the approach to my base. I couldn't shell the roads in French territory so the Iroquois Modern Armor(MBTs) zoomed right up and assaulted me. It was a close call but my newly upgraded MBTs held, although every one was at least damaged, many destroyed. After I cleaned up the Iroquois survivors I destroyed the formerly French city and destroyed the roads. I then started my Golden Age by bombing an Iroquois destroyer with one of my F-15s.

Marsden May 17, 2006, 05:02 PM Sorry my update is late, I should be doing it tomorrow. I decided since my screenies are mostly raze this raze that. I have the Iroqouis deprived of Aluminum and Oil plus their uranium disappeared:lol:  Talk about insult to injury.
France has space flight and all resources, but I'm not too worried, they haven't started any parts yet and don't have all of the required techs. Plus, I built a tactical nuke and have it sailing to France on a submarine
I am considering building a load of nukes and bombing France until it :nuke: glows in the dark:nuke:
What do you think? My conventional forces are slaughtering countless Iroquois. I couldn't even begin to count how many civilians my troops have killed or caused to be refugees. I took out this to get those gems, but it didn't work out. On the plus side I have a colony on the northern most gem deposit, so I have 7 lux. now.

Marsden May 18, 2006, 11:03 PM The sub bug has bit me twice. This current war started out with Carthage and France allied with me against the Iroqouis. A Carthaginian galleon ran into my sub and they declared war. Boo Hoo. Meanwhile the Iroquios decide to wipe them out because they are weak. They conquer the whole Carthaginian homland. One settler escapes to near France.
Here is the last of Carthage.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/15deathofcarthage.jpg
Here is their homeland (cleared of Iroquois).
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/16carthageisland.jpg
More Iroquois cities fall.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/14battleofgandasetaigon.jpg
Now the French hit my sub and I get bushwacked. The French are still at war with the Iroquois so they really can't mount an offensive, but it ruined my plan to mail the declaration of war on the nose of a missle.
This is a small city the French recently founded. I wasn't about to let them off the hook.

I captured the Iroquois capital, finally, and as you can see, there was no core anymore.

Even though I don't have any banks I decided to try to hold onto Smith's. If it flips I will probably raze it.

"Kill, it's such a friendly word"
Next time: I hope to wrap this puppy up. I don't anticipate too much trouble from France, I'll just keep going as I mop up the last of the Iroquois.
carmen510 May 19, 2006, 04:13 PM Nice killin, but where r the nukes?
Marsden May 19, 2006, 04:32 PM This weekend, carmen510, I'm going to light them. I am going to wait 20 turns or so to build about 20 or 30 and :nuke: bam :nuke: all at once! I am going to take some before during and after shots, too.
Experiment 626 May 21, 2006, 12:36 PM Sooo . . .? Have you spread the Holy Word of Plutonium across your landscape yet?
OR:
(Brain voice): "Just wait until tomorrow night, Pinky!"
(Pinky voice): "Why, Brain? What are we doing tomorrow night?"
(Brain voice): "The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world!"

Marsden May 22, 2006, 10:17 PM Well, as my new foreign policy needs satellites, I stole it from the almost extinct Iroquois.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/1stealingsatellites.jpg
Also I found a use for my helicopter! It allowed me to destroy the last Iroquois city without waiting for my transports.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/2thehelecopter.jpg
And, the end of Hiawatha and his people. Yet another victim to my merciless thirst for blood.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/3iroquoisdead.jpg
This is the last army I made.

This is what is left of the Iroquois and Ottoman lands.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/5scorchedearth.jpg I like to be thorogh.
Marsden May 22, 2006, 10:26 PM Here is France, a happy little country.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/6francebefore.jpg
And here is their army.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/65frencharmybefore.jpg
Add this:

And you get this:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/8franceafter.jpg
And their army:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/9frencharnyafter.jpg
Tremble you weaklings, cower in fear
I am your ruler, land, sea and air
Immense in my girth, erect I stand tall
I am a nuclear murderer I am Polaris
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/7polaris.jpg
Shortly after, I end their misery.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/10frenchdead.jpg
I have to say, the army I made with four Marines in it has been one of the handiest I had! The ability to strike from the coast is great! I am never going to put down Marines again.
Well, no one else is left.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/11win.jpg
I'm happy.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j61/dac18643/12victory.jpg
All that work and I scored more on a small regent with the Incas that ended in early conquest.

AutomatedTeller May 23, 2006, 10:22 PM woohoo!! go marsden!! kicked that AI's butt...
I dunno - I think you should go for a demigod game next. I think you can kick deity's butt around if you really try.
Experiment 626 May 25, 2006, 01:00 PM Well done, Marsden, very well done indeed!
I am a bit disappointed that there were no screenshots of a Mushroom Cloud engulfing a French city, but hey, we can't have everything!
I :salute: you!

I can't be done, not with my method (pc and print screen) at least. Belive me I tried. I even tried to show the Polaris sub launched missiles launching, nope. But I think you have to admit the results were shown.

Thanks for saying so, (as opposed to 'just got lucky') but I think I'm at my upper limit. Two specific reasons for this, the Romans were one turn away from riflemen when I attacked and the Iroquois were only short one part when I attacked them and seized their aluminum. But maybe a smaller map, possibly.
Anyone else have an opinion?
iguana1 Sep 19, 2006, 01:42 PM I don't generally play as a warmonger anymore but I did enjoy following your game. I liked the combination of screenshots with captions that capture your thoughts. Thanks for the effort put into posting this!
Marsden Sep 19, 2006, 03:36 PM Wow, I got bumped. :) Cool I thought everybody wanted this to disappear asap;)
Thanks, I don't usually go for warmongering myself, but it's a necessary part of the game and sometimes it's good to just go with it. Plus, I do like the different units that come out late in the game, usually the game ends before you can get them.
